Our Screen 1632 Flat Bed Ink Jet Printer is at the
leading edge in terms of both speed and quality.
It uses UV curable inks which means we can print on
un-absorbent surfaces with ease, extending the range
of substrates we can print on dramatically. Plus with its
rising heads it can print on substrates up to 48mm thick,
allowing us to offer printed products which really push the
boundaries.
All our products are proudly printed in the UK.
Materials to be printed must be generally flat
although textured stock does not present a problem.
We are keen to exploit the full capabilities of our

Doors to challenge you,
Doors can be printed Single or Double Sided
with any image or graphics, the only limit is
your imagination. Printed Doors are a new
addition to our range and we are certain
that they will prove to be popular. We can
supply doors in all standard sizes, either as
basic internal doors or Fire rated doors.

AWA
Our weather durable fence panels are
perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a one
off design or multiple of the same. Each is
printed with UV stable ink, so provided your
construction will be completed within the
next eighty years your hoarding will still look
as good as new!
We have taken the humble A-frame and
supercharged its ‘draw’ potential. A-Frames
With Attitude! (AWA) incorporate a
bespoke attention grabbing area that can
be cut to any shape. The extra Breakout
section is fixed to the A frame base and folds
with the frame for easy storage.
You can specify your
panels at any size
from 150mm square
to 2400 x 1200mm

PERSONALISED
CUTOUTS
We offer an extensive range of Celebrity Cutouts ‘off the
shelf’ as Lifesize, Minis or Masks. In addition we can produce
all these items Personalised from High Resolution images
supplied.
Our Cutouts are printed on strong, fair faced fluted board and
the Lifesize and Mini versions fold for transit. They look really
lifelike and are particularly photogenic. If a famous Celebrity
or Character from History would add gravitas or hilarity to a
forthcoming event then our Cutouts really are a great solution.
Please note: Photographic and Image rights should be addressed
before commissioning a Personalised Cutout.
PRINTING ON GLASS
Ultra Violet ink curing on our Flat Bed press means we can
print on non porous surfaces. One particularly interesting
effect is printing onto glass. Glass Printing is clearly a
challenge, not least because of the fragility of the material,
every job must be evaluated and costed. We would be
delighted to help you with your design and assist with the
logistics of sourcing the material and delivering it ready for
installation.
CARD ‘CANVAS’
PRINTS
The look of a canvas print but printed
on a textured canvas type board that folds
to create the frame.
CARD ‘CANVAS’ PRINTS
These are printed on fair faced fluted board which, once
printed, is scored and glued to make an exceptionally strong
‘box’ section which hangs on a wall just like a real canvas. Not
only are they exceptionally strong, they keep their shape and
do not stretch over time. As standard we offer two sizes,
850mm x 620mm and 1240mm x 850mm. We may be able to
produce in other sizes if you require a number of prints.

Police StandeeS
Deploying a policeman, even a card standee one, can make a
huge difference. One study showed that stationing a constable
at the entrance to a supermarket cut the rate of shoplifting
significantly and produced a return on investment in days.
Likewise having a traffic officer stationed ahead of notorious
accident blackspots can serve to considerably reduce traffic
speeds and, may save lives. All our policemen are available in
either indoor cardboard or all weather Correx board versions.
Where will you station yours?
Metal Signs
Our Metal Signs are printed in Full Colour on durable and
light Aluminium Dibond Sheets which are virtually impervious
to the weather. They are designed for indoor and sheltered
outdoor use. We can print any design or photo on your Metal
Sign.
You can specify a Metal Sign in any size from 100mm x 100mm
right up to 1850mm x 1400mm. All signs have precision cut
edges and can be specified square cut or with round corners as
required.
Finished signs can be bonded directly to a wall or brickwork, or
they can be drilled and screwed. Alternatively we can supply a
mounting system.
Bespoke TileS
Would you like an impressive mural spanning across ceramic
tiles or would tiles make a great solution for durable signage?
Our tiles are hard wearing and fade resistant so you can be
certain that colours remain vivid. Printed Tiles open up a world
of exciting possibilities and we are happy to produce anything
from a single tile to a large montage.
As standard our tiles are 150mm or 200mm square, although
we would be pleased to quote for a different tile size for a
larger project.

XEIKON 5000
Feeding from a roll opens up a world of possibilities
and allows us to produce products which would be
hard, or commercially impractical, to produce any
other way. Our 5000 machine can print on a wide
variety of substrates and produces high quality
finished results. It is a duplexing machine, printing
on the front and reverse of a sheet at the same
time, which means that front to back registration is
always perfect.

Using Ink Jet heads on a sheet fed Digital press
means there is no longer a need to wrap paper
sheets around a cylinder to print.

printed sheets we can produce small quantities of standard
products exceptionally cost effectively.
Keeping sheets flat is a real advantage in that it greatly
increases the thickness of materials which can be printed,
and most importantly, for many of the applications we
have for the press, sheets can be cut and creased before
they are printed! This allows us to carry many blank sheets
for a particular profile (eg Conference Folders) and then

Whilst size isn’t everything it can be telling when the
ultimate quality and / or volume economy of Litho
Printing is required for larger products.
Our press can handle a wide range of substrates and is
particularly useful when used in conjunction with our
downstream Paper to Board Laminator (Litho Lamination).
This combination allows us to produce the fluted boards
we use in the production of Point Of Sale and Packaging
products which are described on the following pages.
Incredibly the 162 Litho Press can print a sheet of paper
measuring a jumbo size of 1200mm x 1600mm and up to
1mm (1000 microns) thick, printed both sides!

IT’S A LARGE FORMAT WORLD....
In the western world the one thing consumers are never
short of is choice. In such a market the challenge is to
stand out from the crowd, and there is an increasing trend
towards using large format litho printing to produce Point
of Sale over more traditional Flexographic techniques.
The reason is clear, litho print produces finished products
of exceptional clarity and quality which can serve to be a
differentiator at the crucial ‘decision time’.
We can help you to produce Free Standing Display Units,
Counter Display Units and any other type of merchandiser
or packaging. Whilst we have a number of ‘standard’
design formats there really is no limit on what is possible to
display your product to full effect.

competence of in-store
staff to assemble the
unit correctly and fill
it with THE product as
intended. Increasingly
we are being asked to
‘co-pack’ where the
products to be displayed
are supplied to us and
we take responsibility
for the correct ‘lOading’

items are then delivered
to individual stores
where they simply need
to be put on display

POSTERS
DISPLAY BOARDS
Using our KBA162 press we can produce any
quantity of large format posters, from one
upwards, on a variety of materials. Where your
requirement is for large volumes of posters,
anything over 100 pieces, litho print is almost
certain to be the most economical choice, as well
as being the best quality possible. We would be
delighted to discuss your project requirements
with you.
We produce our hanging boards on fair faced
grey board. The boards we use are either 3mm
or 5mm thick depending on the size. Any board
can be finished simply with holes for hanging.
We can also produce shaped boards which
can be much more ‘attention grabbing’. An
important consideration with all Point Of Sale is
end of campaign disposal. The benefit of using
card cored boards is that they can be placed
in established re-cycling channels without
additional expense.

All our modern line up of presses have been selected
with one criteria uppermost in our minds - the need
to produce consistently excellent print which will
not only satisfy the requirements of our clients but
positively delight them.
Our KBA 106 meets these requirements in spades. As
well as being one of the fastest make ready presses on
the market, which brings economic benefits which we are

using Stochastic Screening. This technology, which uses
finer ink dots than normal printing, requires a press of
real calibre as well as the very highest standards of press
maintenance and expertise to be executed successfully.
Perhaps for these reasons it is rare in the print industry,
the benefits of using it are, however, clear to see in our
finished production.

The materials we use are FSC
grade materials. FSC, the Forest
Stewardship Council, is a tightly
controlled standard of Forest
Husbandary which ensures that
trees are a sustainable resource.
FSC is considered to be the ‘gold
standard’ of responsible forest
management.
We have printed this catalogue on
a wide range of our standard stocks
to give you access to a ‘live’ example
of how the material performs in
practice. In addition, where full

We offer a full range of Leaflets and Posters
from Credit Card size right up to 1600mm
x 1200mm on a range of different papers to
suit every application. Please see page 28 for
a quick lookup of where you can find samples
of the various leaflet stocks we offer in this
portfolio.
PROMOTACARDS
Promotacards® make a lasting
impression in seconds without you
needing to say a word. Promotacards®
are a Mini brochure and a Business
Card all in one and offer compelling
advantages over ‘traditional’ marketing.
They do not need to tell the entire story, they
simply need to ‘tweak the interest’ and lend
themselves to directing clients to additional
information online. We can even help you to
add QR codes to your Promotacards® which
can be read directly by modern phones.
We also offer a range of finishing options, from
simple folding, in half or thirds and cross folding
to take an A3 sheet down to 1/3 A4 size. Leaflets
can also be drilled and round cornered if required.
We can also die cut leaflets to make eye-catching
collateral designed to increase response rates. Using new laser cutting techniques (please see
pages 62 and 63) we can even cut previously
impossible shapes or personalised messages into
every sheet!
Available in two flat formats: Double Business
Card size (Portrait or Landscape) or Triple
Business Card (Portrait). They are printed in
Full Colour on both sides and supplied flat,
creased ready to fold to their finished size of
85mm x 55mm at the point of use. They can
be specified with Gloss or Matt coating to

DESKPADS
Our perennially popular
Deskpads are printed on White
100gm Executive paper (this
page is the material we use).
Technical Information
Each Deskpad is made up of fifty
printed sheets glued to a 1.2mm
grey board backing. Deskpads
can be printed in One or Two Spot
Colours or in Full Colour.
They can also be ordered with
a Black and White print to the
reverse if required. We are able
to supply pads in A6, 1/3 A4, A5,
A4, A3 and A2 sizes or any other

THE BUSINESS
We now offer two grades of Business Cards. Our original and exceptionally
popular Cards are printed on 400gm Matt Art Card and can be supplied
Unlaminated (see page 36), Gloss Laminated (see page 37) and Matt
Laminated (see page 38). Whilst our standard cards are leaders in the market
our newly launched Prestige Cards are a step up again. These cards are
printed on a 530gm Matt Card which is 600 microns or 0.6mm thick. We offer
these cards matt laminated on both sides only, and they come in a specially
designed outer box with plastic cases for the cards and a silver card holder.
You can read all about Prestige Cards on page 39.

Our Fridge Magnets can be printed either single
or double sided. Self adhesive magnets which are
12mm wide x 50mm long are supplied separately
and loose ready for assembly. Whilst being
exceptionally strong magnets they have an ultra low,
1.5mm, profile which means they are virtually flush
to the surface, minimising the chance of them being
knocked off.
Wobblers are a great way of attracting extra
attention to items on display.
We offer a range of popular standard boxes ranging
in size from Playing Card size right up to Software,
Cookie and Wine Box sizes*. We would be very
happy to quote if the size of box you require falls
outside our standard range.
Fridge magnets are the ideal medium for conveying
a message long term - such as a next dental check-up
or the contact details of a 24 hour plumber. The
gloss finish also allows them to be used as a wipe off
memo board (using a wipe off pen). Of course they
are just as effective as a simple Business Card.
It is also possible to specify Spring or pliable Metal
Twister Struts at an additional cost.
Please Note: In order to convey information
on the reverse as well as the front, our Fridge
Magnets are designed to have a small strip
of magnetic material. They do not have a
continuous magnetic reverse.
Our Wobblers are printed in Full Colour on 400gm
Matt Card and gloss coated on the face side for
ultimate durability and can be Die-Cut to virtually
any shape. Clear Acetate Struts with self-adhesive
pads at each end are supplied loose with Wobblers.
Our boxes are supplied flat and glued, ready for
use and there is no additional forme charge on our

durability. They are designed to perform well in a wide variety
of applications.
Our Labels are self-adhesive and have a white semi-gloss
finish. They are permanent (i.e. non removable once applied).
The Label backing is split diagonally which makes it easy to
peel the Label from the backing no matter what the Label size.

The exceptionally fast make ready times of these
presses, together with quick change ink systems,
means that we can print a huge variety of Spot
Colour Print efficiently and economically. In
addition the quick loading and unloading of material
means that it is practical to offer a wide range of
Paper for Spot Colour and Full Colour Printing.
As with all our presses our Speedmaster is connected to
our pre-press department so that all the ink settings for a
job are loaded into the machine before a sheet is printed.
This pre-setting to correct colour values greatly reduces
the amount of run up sheets required before the press is
ready to print the finished job. In addition, the amount of
ink required for a particular job is pre-calculated at the
pre-press stage. Since we mix all our Spot Colour Ink on
demand on site we produce only the precise measure of
ink required for each job.
All these material saving measures are closely aligned to
our aim of being as environmentally friendly as possible.

ENVELOPES
Printed envelopes make the right impression first
time every time.
Pre-made then Printed Envelopes
For standard business communications printing onto a premade envelope is the most cost effective way of envelope
personalisation. There are however some inherent design
limitations: print must be inset 10mm from all edges and
printing across different thicknesses (e.g. the flap) is not
successful. Please see the schematic to the right below.
Printed then Made Envelopes
Printing on a flat sheet of paper before making the
envelopes removes the limitations of the ‘Pre-Made then
Printed’ Envelopes detailed above. It is possible to print
on every part of the Envelope, and even on the inside if
required.
The only disadvantage of producing Envelopes this way
is that the cost of setup is quite high, making small runs
expensive. For larger runs the costs compare favourably
with ‘Pre-Made then Printed’ Envelopes.

An NCR Set consists of at least two sheets. They rely
on pressure to transfer an image from the top sheet
to those underneath. They can be used with a ball
point pen or using an impact printer such as a Dot

sheets in the set, for this reason sets should not normally

BOOKS AND BOOKLETS
There are a number of ways that books can be bound and the choice of binding will depend very much on the intended application.
Stapled (stitched) binding
This is by far the most common and simplest form of binding. Four Page sections are folded down the centre and collated before being stapled together on the spine.
This type of binding is most suitable for books with a smaller numbers of pages. How many pages can be stitched bound depends on the paper used for the pages.
As a guide a booklets made with 115gm material can be stitched bound with up to 80 pages and one with 200gm inners can be stitched bound with up to 36 pages.
Glued Spine (Perfect) binding
Where your Book contains more pages or where the requirement is for it to have a spine, Perfect Binding is an excellent solution. By way of an example of Perfect
Binding, this Portfolio has been bound this way. Books must contain a larger number of pages in order for it to be possible to form a spine. Typically for a book to be
Perfect Bound it must contain at least 56 pages of 115gm material and 36 pages of 200gm. There is no particular limit on the number of pages that a Perfect Bound
Book can have other than the practicalities of using it. A Book of more than 300 pages may be better split into two volumes.
Hard Back (Case Bound) Books
Hard Back Books are generally considered to be the optimal way of presenting written information. When something is presented hard bound it is generally
perceived as being prestigious. The requirements regarding page count for a Case Bound Book are similar to those for Perfect Bound. The big difference is that once
the inner pages have been glued into a block they are drawn into a hard cover. The hard cover is made by gluing the printed cover onto a stiff board. This finished
‘Case’ is then glued onto the inner pages to form the finished book. As an optional addition a Hard Back Book can have a ‘second’ cover which laps into the front and
back pages to form a protective wrap. These are known as dust jackets.
Ring or Spiral Bound Books
This form of binding is particularly useful for books which will be opened frequently and must stay open on a particular page without holding.
Pages have a line of holes cut in them adjacent to the edge. A circular wire is then inserted to bind the pages together. The form of binding is
commonly used for School Work Books and Recipe Books. There is no upper or lower limit to the number of pages which can be spiral bound.

We can produce Playing Cards in any quantity from
just one pack upwards.
Our packs are Litho or Digitally printed in Full Colour on
300gm Solar Block Card. This unique material has a black
core to prevent any possibility of show through, which
meets the exacting requirements of gaming authorities
worldwide. The printed Cards are sealer varnished to
ensure exceptional quality and playability.
Our Playing Cards are standard poker card size 89mm x
63mm (3.5” x 2.5“) with 3mm Round Corners. Packs consist
of 54 cards.
We are able to supply Playing Cards personalised on
one side (the reverse being the suits of a standard set of
Playing Cards). Alternatively, Playing Cards can be fully
personalised on both sides, giving scope for a completely
new game or a different use entirely.
We are able to supply the card faces - clubs, spades,
picture cards, etc. as EPS files so that they can be worked
into your own artwork.
As standard each set of Playing Cards is supplied in a plain
red box. You can greatly increase the appeal of your Cards
by having them packed in your own Fully Personalised Box.
Our Digitally printed Playing Card Boxes are micro
perforated prior to printing. This special technique makes

Telescopic Roller Banners
Our Banner Stands extend to two metres high and are
spring loaded to automatically rollup for storage and
transportation. We offer two grades, a budget version
designed for occasional or even one off use and a superior
version designed for frequent and continued re-use.
Stands are available in either 800mm or 1000mm widths.
The cost of our stands includes the printed banner. The
material we use is specially designed for Roller Banners
and does not curl or cup, instead staying completely flat
even after prolonged use.
Poster Snap Banners
Poster Snaps are designed for suspending large Posters
and Drop Banners from ceilings, and are great if floor
space is at a premium. They are available to accommodate
A2 (420mm), A1 (594mm) and A0 (840mm).
Outdoor Banners
Our outdoor Banners are printed on Heavyweight Vinyl.
The edges are folded and bonded to make a strong and
durable surround. Depending on the application, Banners

EXHIBITION STANDS
Our Exhibition Stand is a one piece fold away unit
which can be erected or packed away in seconds,
and is designed to provide years of trouble free use.
Technical Information
The stand consists of three main panels and two end
panels, which curve around the sides. Each of the five
panels is 673mm wide x 2225mm high.
The Carry Case, which doubles as a counter, is also
dressed with a graphic. The dimensions for this are
1850mm wide x 790mm high and is included in the
graphics price.
The graphics are printed on five pieces of 180gm
Photorealistic Matt which are matt laminated to prevent
light glare. They are supplied with pre-fixed magnets for
easy mounting.
Replacement graphics are priced separately to the
frame. If you would like your graphic replaced (for stands
originally produced by us), please return the original
panels with the magnetic strips attached. The original
graphic will not be returned.
Our stands come complete with two halogen lamps which
fix to the frame ready for use.
Please Note: Only half of each side panel is visible when
the stand is viewed from the front. Also only the centre
(486mm) of the Carry Case graphic can be viewed from
the front. We would be pleased to send you templates for
your design.

Our unique production system means we
are able to produce Canvas Prints of any
size, from a minimum of 200mm in either
direction, to a maximum of 1500mm,
again in either direction.
We offer three Standard Sized Canvas
Prints, we keep these frames in stock
and can offer exceptional prices without
compromising on quality.
These are 210mm square, 350mm square or
500mm square.
We have invested in the technology required to produce Canvas Prints of the ultimate quality available.
The material used is 350gm polycotton canvas. We use Solvent Based Inks to ensure print colour stability for
an extended period. Indeed we are so confident in the longevity of our Canvas Prints that we offer a lifetime
(75 years +) guarantee against fade.
Our frames are deep kiln dried redwood produced from FSC forests. Canvas is stretched to optimum tension
to completely remove the need for later re-tensioning. Printed canvas extends around the sides of the frame.
This means that the image can either continue to bleed or be mirrored depending on the subject matter.
Alternatively, we can leave the sides unprinted (white) or print the sides any other colour. Our prints are
provided with easy hang fittings which allow the print to be mounted completely flush to the wall.

SCODIX 1200
Digital Embossing can be used to embellish the
majority of our products, both Litho and Digital,
although it is certainly most effective when applied
to thicker materials and over Matt Lamination.
Digital Embossing is an environmentally friendly
embellishment. It produces no harmful waste products or
dangerous Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and uses
small amounts of power in production. And, because the
process is Digital, there is no lower limit on quantity.
We are happy to process just one sheet if required or a
series of sheets each embossed in a unique way.
The preparation for Digital Embossing could not be
easier. We just need an additional Black Separation with
image in all the areas where you would like to have Digital
Embossing. Because of the exceptional accuracy of the
process (each sheet is registered optically before printing)
the most complex shapes can be embossed.

Low Lift
With Low Lift Emboss the effect is somewhat similar
(though there is still much more texture) to the very
highest high lift UV varnish.
And, of course, there are the overwhelming advantages
of a pin point accurate register, ability to emboss complex
shapes and an environmentally friendly process.
It is even possible to include half tones in your design (tints
of black) which will make the embossing texture on the
finished page. If you would like us to prepare your black
separation, or have a particularly complex embossing

MOTIONCUTTER
Using a precision laser driven by a digital file our
new Motion Cutter can cut through paper and
card with incredible precision, meaning that cuts
of almost infinite complexity can be accomplished
without difficulty.
So, if you would like to produce a Business Card with
hundreds of tiny pin holes then we can do it. If you would
like to produce a mailer with a breakout at the top then we
can do that too, no matter how intricate the design.
Using traditional die cutting techniques such complexity
would have been either prohibitively expensive or in many
cases simply impossible.
As well as being able to make very complex cuts the Motion
Cutter can also cut every sheet differently, something
which would be simply impractical with a traditional die.
This opens up the possibility of personalised Die cutting,
with every product having a different cut of, say, the name

of each recipient. So if you fancy sending a promotion to
coffee lovers with a personalised topping sprinkler then
we can do that too.
The Motion Cutter laser is controllable to exceptionally
fine tolerances which allows us to also Kiss cut Labels
so that the backing sheet remains intact and the shaped
labels can be peeled off. It can even remove the surface
from a sheet allowing a black printed sheet to be
personalised simply by ‘etching’ lines in the black surface.

IT’S A LASER
CUT FUTURE
Laser cutting of materials has been a reality for some years now. When
it comes to cutting paper and board the challenge has always been to
achieve a laser cut without peripheral burning of the material. The Motion
Cutter uses a very high powered laser which moves at high speed. The
cut portion of the paper or board is vapourised ‘instantly’ with minimal
damage to the material.

well as Litho Printed. Digital print has the huge advantage of being one by

each recipient. Published data and our own experience tells us that the more
personalised a mailing is the more likely it is to get opened.

Our automated Mailing machine can insert up to six inserts into
a DL, C5 or C4 sized envelope and we can also undertake ‘manual
mailings’, where the item to be sent is, for example, a small box or

SCRATCHCARDS
Our Scratchcards measure 98mm wide x 136mm tall
and are printed on rigid 350gm Card. The standard
reverse designs are printed in Full Colour and your
front design can be Single, Multi or Full Colour.
Options
We have a number of reverse designs available to suit the
majority of promotional campaigns. We have prepared a
PDF detailing how each can be used and the best way to
set up your front artwork. The huge advantage of choosing
a standard reverse design (rather than having a completely
bespoke one) is that we have already printed the cards in
volume and can pass on the economies of scale.
The prizes you award to each class of winner is entirely

beer mats
Our Beer Mats are printed either Digitally or Litho
on a printable media which is then laminated to an
absorbent, 1.5mm thick, open texture wood pulp
core. This unique, laminated, construction allows us
to produce a much higher quality of printing than
normally associated with Beer Mats.
Beer Mats can be supplied single faced (the reverse being
plain white), double faced (with the same image on each
side), or multi-faced (with a different image on each side).
The price does not change whichever option is chosen.
Standard Beer Mats
Standard Beer Mats measure 94mm square with 10mm
rounded corners, or 94mm diameter circular.
Special Shaped Beer Mats
Beer Mats can be Die-Cut to virtually any shape provided

Wherever possible, files should be sent to us online. This is by
far the fastest and most efficient means by which you can get
your artwork to us. We recommend compressing files before
sending them. The reduction in size makes sending the files much
faster. It also makes the transfer more reliable, especially for Mac
files because some elements may be hidden files and these are
automatically included during compression.

each of many pages. So if you want fifty copies of a single page
PDF or one copy of each page of a fifty page PDF then the price
for printing is the same. The main proviso is that everything for
a job must be contained in a single PDF and all pages in a single
document must be the same size and the same orientation.
If for some reason uploading files is not possible then we can, if
required, take ‘hard media,’ such as USB sticks, CDs or DVDs. We
make a £5.00 + VAT additional administration charge for files
supplied on Hard Media. Unfortunately we cannot return Hard
Media. It will be destroyed once the print has been concluded.
Preparing artwork for variable data printing is straightforward
and can be achieved using a number of programmes. For simple
addressing on the top of a conventional letter the programme
we usually use is Microsoft Word. If you are not familiar with
how to prepare a Variable Data PDF from word there is a useful

File Format
We use the very latest Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format)
Processors in our Prepress Department. Our workflow is
exclusively based around this format and working with PDF files.
All design work should be presented to us in this format. The only
exception to the requirement for PDF is when you would like
us to carry out the artwork preparation for a Variable Data job.
Please see page 76.
Your PDF should be prepared at press quality with artwork
centred on pages. Please refer to pages 77 to 79 for advice on
artwork preparation.
Please ensure that once you produce your PDF you check it
carefully before sending it to us. Whilst software is usually
reliable, there are times when the PDF produced differs from
the intent of the original file. Since the PDF supplied is the only
file we have to work with it is exceptionally important that the
way your PDF looks is the way you would like your finished job
to look. Our commitment is to ensure that our print matches the
PDF provided.
Preparing artwork for Variable Digital Printing
For the majority of products we now offer the option of Digital
as well as Litho Printing. It may be that Digital is the preferred
option simply because the volume of print required is small.
However it may also be that Digital is the solution because each
sheet is to be different from the one before and the one following.
Provided you supply a single file consisting of one page or
multiple pages we make no distinction when it comes to pricing
between Digitally printing many of one page or printing one of

Fonts
Please supply your base design as a PDF and your data in an Excel
Spreadsheet or as a CSV (Comma Separated Variable) file.
When creating your PDF it is important to specify that fonts used
should be embedded. This is normally a tick box in the PDF export
area of the programme or an option in an external PDF creator. If
fonts are not embedded they may ‘default’ causing unwanted font
substitutions and reject print.
The setup charge for the addition of one field of data from the
spreadsheet is £25.00. Additional fields are £2.00 each. Once
the set up has been completed we then charge £0.05 per page to
produce the output PDF.
E.g. 100 conference delegates, each requiring a Single Sided
personalised folder containing their course notes. Each folder is to
have the name of the delegate and their ID number.
We produce a 100 page PDF from your artwork with each page
being the folder personalised with the delegate’s name ready for
printing.
Variable data - names in pictures
Using ‘Direct Smile’ software we can embed variable data right
into photos to create absolutely unique and exceptionally engaging
personalisation. Again the base design should be supplied as a
PDF. The setup charge for the first image to be used in the project
is £35.00. The setup charge for each additional image is £4.00.
After that we charge £0.09 per page to create the output PDF
ready for Digital Printing.
Eg. You would like to send a special postcard to 300 favoured
customers with a picture of flowers growing in a flower bed
spelling out the names of the recipients and a slogan. The setup
charge for the one image would be £25.00 and the cost of
producing the output PDF

Photographs & Graphics
Photographs should be scanned at the size required in your
finished design at 400dpi and saved as CMYK images.
Please note: It is important that images are originated at this
400dpi high quality. Re-sampling an image of a lower resolution
(say 72dpi from the internet) to 400dpi does not improve its
quality and does not make it suitable for high quality print.
Monitor calibration is a big consideration when scanning and
colour balancing. If your monitor is not calibrated, the image you

recommend obtaining our Hard Copy Colour Charts. As well as a
comprehensive range of colour swatches these include an image
which is called ‘Ole No Moire’. The same image is available for
download from www.printinfo.co.uk together with calibration
instructions.

Flattening Artwork
Where designs are built up using a
number of layers and transparencies,
it is important that they are ‘flattened’
before creating the PDF. Un-flattened
transparencies are notorious for causing
print problems. ‘Flattening’ your artwork
will ensure that the finished print is as
expected, without compromising the
creative intent.
Colour Matching
Throughout your design the colours used must be CMYK
colours. There are a large number of variables which can affect
the colour produced during Full Colour Printing. Simply looking
at the appearance of colours on a monitor, especially if no
monitor calibration has been carried out (please see the previous
‘Photographs and Graphics’ section), is unlikely to give you an
accurate impression of the colour of printed work.
The problem is the same with an un-calibrated desktop printer,
such as a laser or inkjet. Those may well render very different
colours to those produced on a professional printing press.
Rather than leaving colour matching to chance and ‘keeping your
fingers crossed,’ we strongly recommend that colours are chosen
from our Hard Copy Colour Charts. We have produced two Charts
(one is printed on coated material and the other is printed on
uncoated material). Each shows over 1000 colours together with
their CMYK values. The advantage of using these charts is that
they are exactly matched to our presses. When a colour is chosen
from the swatch sheets and the CMYK values selected in your
design, you can be confident that the finished result will closely
match your expectations.
Our Colour Swatch Booklets are available for £15.00 + VAT &
Carriage each or £25.00 + VAT for the pair. They are an invaluable
and accurate way of ensuring predictable colour.
Please note: Where you have a particular colour issue, for
example a requirement to match to a specific company colour or
a previously printed job, this MUST be brought to our attention at
the order stage. Simply specify the colour to be matched to or that
the job has been previously printed in the ‘Special Instructions’
section during the online ordering process.
If you have a swatch of the colour required, please send us a hard
copy. We cannot be held responsible if your printed work does not
match your requirements unless those requirements are brought
to our attention before we print.
Proofs
Our normal service does not include proofs. At Pre-press we check
that our printing will match the files provided. By dispensing with
the need for proofs to be signed before print commences, we have
greatly improved the speed and efficiency of our service.
However, we recognise that in some circumstances proofs are
desirable and we are pleased to produce these from your Digital
Artwork prior to printing. Please be aware that sending proofs will
add time to the overall turnaround.
We offer three types of proofs: PDF Proofs, Wet Proofs and
Montage Wet Proofs.
PDF Proofs: These are sent digitally via Email or through
a download system for larger files. They are a ‘normalised
PDF’, produced from our Pre-press system and are an exact
representation of what we will print. They are ideal for checking
layout and content but are only as accurate as your monitor
calibration with regards to colour.
Wet Proofs: These are an exact match to the job which will
eventually be printed, since they are a small run of the finished job
on press. We would always recommend a small run of print (to be
used as a wet proof) prior to any very large run of print.
Montage Wet Proofs: Often the reason that a Wet Proof is
considered is that there are a couple of critical ‘house colours’ or
there is a particular photo which needs to be checked. In these
circumstances a less expensive alternative to a full Wet Proof
may be to create a montage of the critical elements and order a
Montage Wet Proof of this.

Artwork central and backing up correctly
It is important that artwork is positioned centrally on your layout.
Our pre-press system works from the centre of the page in aligning
jobs for print. At pre-press the correct size aperture for the job to
be printed is filled with the image on the page running out from the
page centre. If a job is off-centred or if front and back are placed
on a single layout then, potentially, only a portion of the job will
appear in the aperture and be printed! (see fig. 1)

Bleed and Quiet Border
It is also important that jobs backup correctly with the orientation
of each page being the same. We strongly recommend printing
proofs from the PDF you have created to your own printer prior to
submission. (see fig.2)

Understanding the need for Bleed and a Quiet Border is vital if,
we are going to achieve our joint aim of an excellent finished print
job. We require Bleed to allow for the tolerance of our guillotines
(the machines used for cutting your job after printing). Even with
our state of the art equipment there is a margin of error with
the operation. If your image finishes exactly at the edge of your
required finished size then these small deviations may produce
unsightly white flashes at the edge of your print. By extending
your background colour or image beyond the edge of your finished
job the effects of the same deviations are not noticeable. We

A Quiet Border is the distance you should allow from the edge of
your finished page size for text, diagrams or images not going to
bleed. The reason for the border is again the tolerance in cutting.
If you have a design where the text runs to the very edge, then any
cutting deviation will result in some of your text being cut off!!
With a very small Quiet Border, even the smallest cutting deviation
could result in the finished job looking uneven. We recommend a
Quiet Border, where there is no text etc, of at least 5mm around
the edges of your job.

File Pre-Print Check
Digital Embossing
Our detailed Pre-print Checking is a unique and highly regarded
part of our service. Checking is prescribed on a minority of
products and optional (but highly recommended) on the remainder.
Setting up artwork for Digital Embossing is straightforward. We
simply need an additional separation to act as a mask for all the
areas that you would like to have embossed on your work. This
can be supplied as a separate PDF file or as an additional channel
within your PDF. It is important to make sure that it is identical in
all respects (size, orientation, crops, position of images and text
etc.) to your original CMYK artwork.
When you opt for your file to be Pre-print Checked it will be
reviewed by an experienced designer and checked by our
proofreaders.
We check that:
• Artwork is central and backing up correctly.*
• There is sufficient Bleed and Quiet Area.*
• Fonts are embedded.*
• All elements of the job are CMYK (RGB and Spot Pantone
colours may not print as expected in Full Colour).*
• The quality of pictures and text is to print standard.*
• There is colour consistency and wherever possible that the
colours specified will print as viewed on screen.*
• We also carry out a rigorous proofreading exercise which, whilst
not guaranteed to pick up every error, has proved a ‘lifesaver’
many times in the past, where embarrassing and costly mistakes
have been spotted.*
* Please read on for an explanation of these items.
Where potential problems are highlighted we will (with your
agreement) correct them if practical, often at no extra charge.
Alternatively, we will request a corrected file.
Please note: If you ‘opt out’ of Pre-print Checking, your job will not
be checked and will go through our automated pre-press system. It
will not be seen by ‘human eyes’ before it is on press, by which time
it will either be too late, or very expensive, to correct!
The cost of the Pre-print Check is £3.95 + VAT per item. For Books
& Booklets the check is £9.95 + VAT up to 16 pages, please add an
extra £2.00 + VAT per every additional 4 pages.

Creating Artwork for Digital Embossing
If you just require some text or line art to be digitally embossed
then the easiest way of preparing your Emboss plate is to make a
duplicate of your original artwork. On this duplicate either delete
or make white all the elements which you do not want embossed.
All the embossed elements should be converted to black.
If the item to be embossed is a picture then a separate Black and
White image file should be created. The method for creating
the Embossing separation depends on the complexity of the
‘mask’. It may be possible to use the ‘magic wand’ selector tool
in a programme such as Photoshop to highlight the areas for
embossing. Alternatively it may be that the mask must be formed
by tracing out the areas manually. This can be a time consuming
process. If you would like help preparing your black mask please
contact us and we can quote for undertaking this work.

make sure you read the ‘How to Use’ section of the site BEFORE

PAPER AND CARD
Carriage Choices
The A series is based on A0 which is one square metre in area.
The weight of the paper is also based on the weight of one square
metre in grams, i.e. ‘gm/m2’.
We offer a choice of several carriage options depending on weight
and urgency:
First Class Post (FCP)
Available on the smallest items. Whilst being a very low cost
service it is not guaranteed and we have no method of tracking or
tracing. It is not recommended for urgent or time critical print.
Jumbo Poster
Billboard
Couriers (C)
Used for the majority of consignments. This is a guaranteed next
day service. In the event of nonperformance in time, the courier
refunds the cost of carriage which is then passed on to you.
Large Poster
Bulk Transport (BT)
A guaranteed next day delivery service used for heavier
consignments or an order for multiple items. This is a pallet
service. Provision should be made to move or split the pallet on
delivery. In the event of nonperformance in time, the courier
refunds the cost of carriage which is then passed on to you.

The world of print is rapidly changing and we

At every stage of the production process we have
equipment and expertise designed to make the process
of bringing designs and ideas on screen to successful
‘physical fruition’. Of course not every job requires every
operation, the route will be determined by a variety of
factors such as run length, quality required, static or
variable content together with whether you want to take
advantage of comprehensive pre-print checking services.
Most of these routes are dictated by the job, however
some can be down to personal preference. We have set
out the various elements of our service below to clarify
how jobs flow through our system.
Pre-print Check
One of the most highly regarded aspects of our service
is our comprehensive Pre-print Checking. For a small
additional payment the artwork you send to us can be
thoroughly checked by Print Experts and dedicated Proof
Readers ahead of printing. This ensures that the finished
results meet and exceed your expectations.
Printing
Once your artwork is ready for print it will be sent to one
of our Presses. Digital for very small runs and variable
data, and Litho for larger runs.
Print Finishing
Once your job has been printed it goes to our finishing area
to be made into a finished job. Finishing can be as simple
as cutting the printing to size, or as complex as a booklet
cover with Matt Lamination and Digital Embossing bound
to inners using Perfect Binding. The finishing to be carried
out will depend on the product and the extras chosen.
Customer Services
Underpinning everything we do is our Customer Service
department, and they will be constantly monitoring your
jobs as they progress through our works.
Quality Control
A key part of us is our attention to detail and quality and
our adherence to time lines. We constantly monitor every
stage of the process, checking things are going the way
they should, correcting any issues long before they begin
to affect the quality or timely despatch of finished jobs. We
are constantly working towards a 100% satisfaction rate
for delivered products and regularly record well over 99%. Packing and Delivery
Completed work is carefully packaged and made ready
for transit. After all the best printing in the world is no
good if it arrives bent and broken. Delivery is the bridge
between us and our clients. We monitor every delivery
and constantly check that everything has gone to plan.
