In 1937, the door opened on a bold experiment in Jewish learning. Rabbi Dr. Joseph
Soloveitchik, lZvf, founded Maimonides School to engage the hearts and teach the
minds of Jewish children. Its ambitious dual curriculum would pair proficiency in
Torah education with excellence in general studies, preparing students to contribute
to the modern world while invigorating their attachment to Judaism and a halachic
way of life. Its atmosphere would inspire boys and girls equally to a love of learning,
mitzvot, chesed, Am Yisrael, and Eretz Yisrael.
From its first class of six students, this vision has blossomed into an energetic
educational center of almost 600 students, learning together in Kindergarten
through Grade 12. Students from Greater Boston and beyond, and from a wide range
of religious backgrounds, are welcomed into a school community by teachers who
reach out to motivate and educate.
Student life begins with a full academic schedule and continues beyond the
classroom with stimulating clubs, sports and activities. Chesed and tzedakah efforts
are part of daily life, demonstrating students’ compassionate awareness of their
relationship to the wider world and their willingness to take action. Indeed, the
values fostered by this school community endure; Maimonides graduates have earned
an enviable reputation for leadership and accomplishment in every field of human
endeavor. For over six decades, they have brought the Rav’s vision to life—Torah life,
and contemporary life.
Maimonides students are at home with intensive study, academic achievement and
schedules brimming with activity. More important, Maimonides students are at home
with halachic life, indelibly connected to Judaism, and dedicated to perpetuating the
sacred tradition. From the youngest to those on the eve of graduation, these are lives
shaped by head and heart, intellect and love. They are both outstanding students and
extraordinary people. We invite you to discover for yourself this unique treasure of
Jewish education in Boston, and share it with your children.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD
For 70 years, Maimonides School has educated bnei Torah -- spectacular young men
and women who have actively embraced the Mesorah lived and taught by our school’s
revered founder, Rabbi Dr. Joseph B. Soloveitchik, l”z. From kindergarten, through
high school, to yeshivot in Israel, to universities and graduate schools, and ultimately
to the heart of Jewish communities all over the world and in Israel, imbued with a
love of Torah and equipped to operate at the highest level of society, intellectually
and professionally, Maimonides has been and continues to be a source of energy and
lifeblood to the Jewish community.
In this context, we have the privilege to honor and embrace Jennifer and Scott Tobin
this year. On every level -- as deeply committed bnei Torah themselves, as the parents
of four wonderful children in our school, as dedicated, effective and powerful lay
leaders within our school community and our broader Jewish community -- Jen and
Scott model beautifully the outcome we pursue in our school. Jen and Scott live
their lives in modernity, as successful professionals, as successful parents, as inspiring
leaders within our community -- all the while, in the beautiful and visible context of
their Torah values.
That the Tobin Family is in the midst of making aliyah, up to the Land of Israel, is a
poignant overtone to this year’s celebration. As our school celebrates 70 years of the
principles espoused by the Rav -- the centrality of Halacha, the demanding standard
of excellent education equally for girls and boys, a visceral and tangible connection
to Medinat Yisrael, and the important of living chesed within our kahal -- we are mindful
that the State of Israel has just celebrated its 60th “anniversary.” That the Tobins are
choosing to make their home in Israel is a beautiful link between the community we
work so hard to build at the Maimonides School, and the Land we love and yearn for.
Maimonides School’s myriad achievements this year – in the beit midrash, classroom
and laboratory, on the ballfield and the stage, are enhanced by the almost tangible
presence of Israel in the very atmosphere. From the Elementary School children’s
singing of Hatikvah and their Shulchan Ivrit, from the Jerusalem time clock in
the auditorium to seniors’ classes on Israel advocacy, Zionism is a cornerstone
of the Maimonides experience. And nearly 200 alumni who reside in Israel are
living testimony.
4
Amidst these milestones for our school and our people, I thank everyone for their
support, from the teachers and administrators to the volunteer leaders, committee
members, donors, room parents, event planners. For 70 years Maimonides
has personified a school community, and with G-d’s help that will provide an
impregnable foundation for the future.
Jeffrey Swartz
Board Chair

Message from the Executive Director
Maimonides School is thrilled to culminate its 70th year with a successful Annual
Campaign and Gala in honor of Jennifer and Scott Tobin.
The school begins its eighth decade with renewed commitment to its mission, pride
and gratitude for its achievements, and confidence that future challenges will be
successfully met by hundreds of dedicated and capable professionals and volunteers.
Our school community is inspired by the generations whose efforts we have been
blessed to inherit.
The Tobins represent a new generation of leadership that is reinvigorating Maimonides school. They have devoted their time, imagination, skills and resources to the
full range of school activities and priorities, from the classroom to the Board room,
from PTA projects to financial security. They and their children serve as an authentic
model for engaged and committed families.
Our school family, with the usual mixed emotions, salutes the members of the Class
of 2008 as they close this chapter of their lives. This is our school’s largest senior class,
and its record of academic effort, extracurricular accomplishment and commitment
to chesed will be hard to duplicate. We welcome the seniors to one of the country’s
fastest-growing Jewish organizations – the Maimonides School Alumni Association.
We note with sadness the passing of Mr. Abraham Levovitz, beloved leader, mentor, friend and president of our school. Mr. Levovitz’s efforts over several decades
were largely responsible for the stability and growth of our school. He is profoundly
missed.
As the campaign draws to a close, I extend heartfelt thanks to the Development Committee, Philip Levy, Debbie Swartz and Jenn Weinstock, and the dozens of volunteer
solicitors who are the backbone of this fundraising effort. The energy and creativity invested by Risa Gewurz and Allison Mael, chairs of the Annual Gala, are sure to
result in a spectacular event.
Thanks and kudos as well to the administrators and staff of the Accounting and
Development Offices, whose behind-the-scenes efforts and loyal service are cornerstones of any successful campaign.
Naty Katz

Jennifer & Scott Tobin
Every institution depends on a core of committed, passionate volunteers like Scott
and Jennifer Tobin, honorees of Maimonides School’s 2008 Annual Campaign.
“The notion of participating is inherently connected to who Jen and I are as
people,” Scott explains. “It’s in our blood, it’s in our being. It was passed on to us
by our parents and grandparents.” Adds Jennifer, “The motivation is that we feel
Maimonides is our community. We get a lot from Maimonides, and we want to
contribute to it in return.”
Scott and Jennifer Tobin grew up in Long Island, New York. He graduated from
Brandeis in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies and
a concentration in international relations. She is a 1993 Brandeis graduate, earning
her degree in neuroscience.
They have four children: Benjamin, 10 and a Maimonides fifth-grader; Coby, 8 and a
Maimonides second grader; Avi, age 5. and Zachary, almost 3. During their six years
as Maimonides School parents, the depth and breadth of the Tobins’ commitment
and involvement have served as a model for all school families.
Scott shared his professional expertise as a member of the Development Committee
in 2004 and joined the Board of Directors the following year. He chairs the Board’s
Investment Committee and is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. He
also organized a letter-writing campaign among Elementary School students to
American forces stationed in Iraq.
Jennifer began her volunteer service on the Recruitment Committee in 2002 and is
currently co-chair of the Parent-Teacher Association, after serving as a room parent
for several years. She also started the popular adult women’s Wednesday night
basketball program, now in its second year in the Maimonides gym. Earlier this year
the Tobins chaired a hugely successful and unprecedented comedy night.
“Community involvement,” Scott asserts, is “inherently connected to the
responsibility we have as members of the Jewish community. Our lives would
certainly not be as fulfilling if we weren’t activists in some form or another, whether
it be encouraging the students to write letters to soldiers or bringing the community
together for a comedy night, hosting our children’s grades in our succah, or just
serving pizza at school on Rosh Chodesh. They’re all one and the same.”
8
“We’ve had super role models,” Jennifer says. “We are very fortunate to be friends
with people who have been part of Maimonides since its inception. Because of that
we know how hard it was to create this school in a time when there was nothing
else like it here in Boston. And when we see people that are still coming to the
Maimonides dinner long after their children have graduated, it’s a sign to us that
this really is a true community that cares about Jewish education. They taught us the
bigger picture, that in supporting Maimonides we also help make Boston a viable and
beautiful place to live as an Orthodox Jew.”
Jennifer feels her children “are definitely proud of the fact that we’re at the
school so much, that we spend so much time in the building, whether it’s for
Family Learning or just being in their classrooms. For them academics is just one
aspect of Maimonides. It’s also their community center where they feel secure and
comfortable, and free to be themselves. Most importantly, it’s not just a school. It’s a
place where the whole family is involved.”
“It’s our hope,” Scott says, “that just as our grandparents instilled in our parents, and
our parents instilled in us, that we will instill in our children the responsibility of
being doers and making a difference in the communities that they will one
day call home.”
Scott joined Battery Ventures, a private equity and venture capital firm in 1997 and
has been a general partner since 2000. Jennifer conducted clinical research on aging
and memory at the Einstein College of Medicine in New York and Massachusetts
General Hospital.
The Tobins, who reside in Brookline, are actively involved in a number of other
Jewish organizations, including AIPAC and CJP, and also helped launch
Mercaz Ma’asei in Israel, a national service initiative and training center. Its mission
is strengthening Israeli society through professional volunteerism and developing
the next generation of civic leaders.

We learn from Pirkei Avot that the world stands on three things: Torah,

to G-d, and acts of loving kindness. Jen and Scott live by this code,
demonstrating it beautifully day after day, modeling it for us all. It is
why honoring them is such a distinct pleasure – they enrich all of our

MAIMONIDES SCHOOL ADBOOK SUPPLEMENT,
2007-2008/5768
This journal is a supplement to the 2007–2008/5768 Maimonides
School Scholarship Adbook. The Adbook was distributed to everyone
attending the school’s Annual Gala, which took place on June 1 at the
John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.
Nearly 400 seniors, parents, teachers, friends and supporters attended
the Gala, celebrating a memorable school year and a successful Annual
Campaign. Highlight of the event was recognition of the school’s honorees, parents Jennifer and Scott Tobin, who exemplify a new generation of Maimonides School volunteer leaders. The Tobins were introduced by a video tribute and by remarks by Zev Gewurz, their friend
and neighbor. The honorees, who plan aliyah in the summer of 2008,
spoke about the importance of service to the school. They accepted an
engraved Kiddush cup as a gift from the school community.
Also in the spotlight at the Annual Gala were members of Maimonides
School’s Class of 2008. Seniors were introduced individually, to prolonged applause, and several fulfilled roles in the program, including
a dvar Torah by Felicia Kuperwaser and a tribute to faculty by Sarah
Cassel, outgoing co-presidents of the Student Council. Evan Gale led
the singing of national anthems and Yehudah Leib Ahearn the Birkat
HaMazon.
Rabbi David Shapiro, Rosh Yeshiva, offered memorial tributes to two
pillars of the school community who died over the past year, Rabbi
Isaiah Wohlgemuth z”l and President Emeritus Abraham Levovitz z”l.
Also speaking were Jeffrey Swartz, who chairs the Maimonides Board
of Directors, and two former executive directors, Joshua Wolff ’89 and
Leora Joseph.
The event began with an extended dinner reception—a spectacular
buffet from Catering by Andrew. As guests arrived, they were greeted
by music provided by the Maimonides Jazz Band. Chairs of the Annual
Gala were Risa Gewurz, Allison Mael and Jennifer Weinstock.
