Support Needed for Those in Need The Bensenville / Wood Dale Food Pantry has been providing food assistance to the residents of Bensenville, Wood Dale and North Elmhurst since 1972. The pantry is funded entirely by monetary and food donations as well as grant assistance and run exclusively by volunteers. Currently, a 20 year old vehicle which requires constant maintenance is used to pick up food items from grocery stores, local food distributors and the Northern Illinois Food Bank in order to serve 350 – 400 households each month. The pantry is currently asking the community to support its efforts to purchase two newer but used box trucks. To date, fundraising efforts have raised over $15,000 with generous funding from the Bensenville Community Foundation, Bensenville Rotary, the Bensenville Senior Citizen and Disabled Advisory Council, Fenton High School Student Council, the City of Wood Dale, Wood Dale Chamber of Commerce and Larry Roesch Ford. Donations can be made payable to Bensenville / Wood Dale Food Pantry Truck, 192 South Center Street, Bensenville, Illinois 60106. Unfortunately, many families struggle to pay bills and put food on the table. Putting gifts under the tree is a luxury that cannot be met. The Village intends to lessen these struggles for Bensenville families through two collections starting in November. The Village’ Toy and & Food Drive seeks donations of new, unwrapped toys, and non-perishable food items. Cash contributions are needed and welcomed. The goal is that every child receive a new toy, new book and a stocking. The Bensenville Rotary Club sponsors the Coat Drive collecting new and gently worn adult and child-sized cold weather coats. New scarfs, hats and mittens are also needed to guard against the cold weather. Collection Boxes are located throughout the Village including Village Hall, Bensenville Theatre, the Bensenville Library, and the Bensenville Park District as well as many local businesses. For more information, to get a collection box or to make a donation, phone Village Hall at 630- 766-8200. Fats, oils and grease…Bad for the sewer system… Bad for your sewer bill… Too often grease is washed into the sewer system, usually through our kitchen sinks. Grease sticks to the inside of sewer pipes both on your property and under the village streets. Over time the grease builds up and eventually it can block the entire pipe. Garbage disposals do NOT keep grease out and commercial additives have little effect. The results can be: What YOU can do: • Raw sewage overflowing in your home, your neighbor’s home, our village streets, parks and natural water ways. • Potential contact with disease causing organisms. • Increased operation and maintenance costs for the sewer division which leads to higher Village sewer bills. • NEVER pour grease down your sink drain or your toilet. • NEVER pour grease into your garbage disposal. • DO pour grease into an empty can or container, let it cool, and place container in the garbage for disposal. • Scrape food off plates, pots and pans into the garbage. • Talk to your friends and neighbors about the problems of grease in our sewer systems and how to keep it out. Administration Dr. Kathie Pierce | Superintendent Mr. James Ongtengco | Principal Ms. Jane Lawnicki Director of Business Operations Calendar Reminders SEE PAGE 9 It was during opening day for staff members, that Fenton’s new principal, James Ongtengco, shared information on the percentage of Americans nationwide living at or below the poverty line that started what has become a year-long initiative to stop hunger in our own community. The school decided to focus their efforts on raising funds to bring Northern Illinois mobile food pantries to Fenton and to support the Bensenville / Wood Dale Food Pantry’s need for a new box truck. English Department Chair, Mike Mitchell, reached out to his sister, Gina Gramarosso who is a senior development officer with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to get the ball rolling. Since that day, a video entitled, Give Hunger a Voice, was created by Fenton teacher, Julia Bray and several students. Fenton’s Swing Choir, under the direction of Seredy Williams, made donation cans that were distributed to local businesses during Homecoming Week and Fenton Student Council members, under the direction of Clint Porter, ear marked current and future fundraising efforts as well. Swing Choir members took time out of practice to create donation cans for local businesses to collect money for a new truck for the food pantry. Information from the Northern Illinois Food Pantry was sent to staff and the Applied Technology, Business, Family & Consumer Sciences and Art and Music Department staff members pooled their resources to have a Northern Illinois Food Pantry visit Fenton and distribute food on September 29. In less than two hours, Fenton volunteers provided 186 families with a box of nutritious food. “It was a pleasure to lend a helping hand (at the mobile food pantry) and I can’t wait until the next one,” said Jim Siple, Fenton Math Teacher. “The kids were very excited and happy that they helped,” commented Fenton freshman soccer coach, Victor Ruiz. “It made them feel good about doing something for the community and Fenton.” In less than a month, four additional Northern Illinois Mobile Food Pantries have been funded by Fenton staff. In addition, the Fenton Student Council will host a mobile food pantry on December 15 from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Please check the Fenton website at www.fenton100.org for details. On Monday, September 28, the District 100 Board of Education recognized the Fenton Student Council for their commitment to ending hunger in our community. The students, under the direction of Mr. Porter, presented a check to the Bensenville / Wood Dale Food Pantry to help purchase a box truck. Mr. Porter and student council officer, Alana Johnsen are pictured with District 100 Board Members: (sitting from left): Laura Wassinger, Mary Ribando, Susan Ralph, Nancy Gonzales (standing from left): Paul Wedemann and David Vogel. “Mike, you’ve always said what a great faculty and staff you have at Fenton,” commented Gina Gramarosso, Senior development officer from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. “Well, I saw it in action today and you are right. They are amazing.” For more information regarding the Northern Illinois Food Bank please visitwww.solvehungertoday.org. The modified space has been configured to accommodate many types of activities and has a university feeling about it. “The new ARC, is a space for everyone,” commented Michael Berago, Instructional Tech Coordinator and Media Services Department Chairperson. “If a group of students would like to collaborate, we have soft seating where they can work with their Chromebooks with collaborative online tools and conduct face-to-face discussions.” In addition, the space provides study nooks for quiet study and an area equipped with a projector where entire classes can conduct research utilizing Fenton’s online database. Assistance from ARC staff members (see photo) is available before, during and after school until 3:30 p.m. A theater type stage area allows classes or after school groups to work on performances complete with a curtain to block out noise. This space was recently used when best-selling author, Cristina Henriquez visited. Her presentation, sponsored by the Bensenville Community Public Library, was held in this new space while simultaneously allowing other students complete access to library materials. Media Center May 2015 Physically, the ARC is mobile. This means, that if more room is necessary for staff professional development sessions or student led meetings, the bookshelves can be wheeled into a new configuration to meet the need of a group. Newly renovated departmental offices which include English, Social Studies, Math and Science are now on either side of the ARC providing students with better access to staff members. The ARC will continue to be a work in progress as more resources are added. The staff is currently working on building an online collection of books where students can log in and check out eBooks. This will be launched by second semester. The entire Fenton construction project is expected to be complete by January 2016 when additional classroom space, cafeteria and new main entrance open. An open house will be announced in 2016 so the community can see all the exciting changes taking place at Fenton High School. We are looking to open our schools to the community not only during school hours but during the week in the evening as well as weekends. The idea is to focus on the needs of our students and their families. The district is using a needs assessment approach in order to pinpoint the needs of our families within our community. Then the goal will be to focus on putting together programs to fit those needs and make them easily accessible through our schools. The integrated focus is on academics, health, and social services. One main example of a community integrated approach is our partnership with College of DuPage. Through the Family Literacy Grant, District 2 provides adult ESL classes to the students and parents of our community along with Pre-K instruction, library time, family engagement and parent education. Through this partnership we have been able to address a growing need of these services in our community. Using public schools as hubs, community schools bring together community partners to offer a range of supports and opportunities to children, youth, families and communities. To receive more information to sign up for the adult ESL classes please call Christy Poli in Tioga School at (630) 766-2602 extension 4237. The only requirement is to have a 3 to 5 year old child that can attend Pre-K in the evening. BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 STAFF APPOINTED TO KEY STATE ADVISORY BOARD Dr. James Stelter, Superintendent and Mrs. Angie Adams, Math Specialist and Association Co-President, have been appointed to the Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC) by State Superintendent, Dr. Tony Smith. PEAC, is a 32-member body appointed by the Illinois State Board of Education to create a new way to evaluate teachers and principals that incorporates student growth measures. In January 2010, the Governor signed the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) (Public Act 96-0891) which, among other things, requires that the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to develop a template for teacher and principal performance evaluations, develop a pre-qualification program and ongoing training for evaluators, promulgate rules related to measuring student growth, and to appoint a Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC) to assist in these endeavors. As teacher evaluation requirements are implemented by Illinois school districts, PEAC will continue to serve an important role in this work. In order for these efforts to continue at a meaningful level, PEAC must hear from those directly involved. Dr. Stelter has accepted the role as a representative for the Illinois Association of School Administrators. Mrs. Angie Adams was recommended to PEAC as a teacher to participate on this Council. BE NSE NVIL L E CO MMU N ITY N EWS | N O VEMBER/D ECEMBER 2015 W.A. Johnson School hosted their Annual SMART START workshop for parents & students! With the addition of a One-on-One Chromebook Program, teachers at W.A. Johnson Elementary School put together an internet safety program for parents and students. The two day event, which started with an evening program for the 4th and 5th grade parents and concluded with a day-long workshop at school was a great learning experience for everyone. The program was organized by the instructional technology team and the 4th & 5th grade teachers who helped guide the families through the important things to know when surfing the internet and how to stay safe. Parents learned specifically about how to monitor the internet experience for their children while still remaining respectful. If you wish to learn more about the SMART START program, please contact W.A. Johnson School at (630) 766-2605 and ask for the principals. Bensenville School District 2 would like to recognize and thank its board members: Robert Laudadio, Kathie Bossier, Donna Prunotto, Jorge Sanchez, Katie Krajecki, Nancy Quinn, and Matt Vassar for their time and dedication they have given to help maximize the unique potential of each child by honoring a natural curiosity and igniting a desire to learn. FRUIT & VEGETABLE LUNCH PROGRAM Bensenville SD2 is now offering free fruit and vegetable servings to all students at lunch. Fresh fruits and vegetables provide more nutrients than processed foods and reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases. We are fortunate to be able to offer this addition. All students can participate while at lunch, by selecting one serving of fresh fruits or vegetables from the serving table in the cafeteria. This is being offered three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students are encouraged to make one selection from the two options offered. There is no charge. Some of the seasonal fruits and vegetables that will be available include: red grapes, cantaloupe, dried cranberries, honeydew, pineapple, snap peas and grape tomatoes amongst other options. The program provides free fresh fruits and vegetables to all students. It is a wonderful chance to expose children to a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and offer nutrition education at the same time. A Special Performance for Tioga’s Students Tioga School students and staff were treated to a special performance of Fenton High School’s fall play, Charlotte’s Web on Thursday, September 24. Kindergarteners, 1st & 2nd graders enjoyed the performance and got the opportunity to ask questions to the Fenton performers afterwards. Tioga teachers have used this exciting experience as a way to bring literacy standards to life. We can think of no better way to help students learn about story elements (character, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution) than seeing our high school friends perform Charlotte’s Web! BENSENVILLE COAT & TOY DRIVE- DECEMBER 12TH Many of us have coats hanging in our closets that we never wear anymore. Each year, the Bensenville Rotary collects gently used coats to distribute to needy families in town. We often have more people needing coats than we have coats to distribute. If you have a gently used coat at home that you wouldn’t mind donating, please bring your coat to the main office of your child’s school by November 30th. The coats will be distributed Saturday, December 12th at Johnson School. Your generosity will certainly help someone in the community. The Coat Drive is done in conjunction with the Village of Bensenville’s Toy Drive. If you are willing to purchase a toy for a needy Bensenville child, please drop it off in the box in the main office by Monday, November 30th. Last year Bensenville Rotary distributed over 600 coats to the community. A BOX to DROP OFF YOUR GENTLY USED COATS will be available in each school office, starting OCTOBER 1st until November 30th. Each of the wreaths will be decorated with large red bulbs that will be illuminated during the holiday season. Should a fire occur during the holiday season that is determined to have been directly caused by a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace the red bulb. The idea is for the residents of the Bensenville Fire Protection District to be exceptionally safety conscious during the holiday season. Safety Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season. HOLIDAY DECORATING KKK Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. KKK Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. KKK Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. KKK Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect. KKK Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. KKK Keep decorations away from windows and doors. HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING KKK Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan. KKK Keep children and pets away from lit candles. KKK Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet. KKK Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. KKK Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them. KKK Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding. Your Source for SAFETY Information NFPA Public Education Division • 1 Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02169 Before Heading Out or to Bed Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed. • FACTS ! Two of every five home decoration fires are started by candles. • ! Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. www.nfpa.org/education Happy Holidays! 14 BE NSE NVIL L E CO MMU N ITY N EWS | N O VEMBER/D ECEMBER 2015 MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 9 BCPL Toddler Tales, 10:30am BCPL Kindergarten Boot Camp, 12:30 – 2:30pm BCPL BCPL Computer Basics, 6pm BCPL LEGO Night, 6:30pm BCPL Foreign Language Film Series, 7pm 8 BCPL Second Sundays, 2:00-4:00pm Log House BCPL Play to Learn, 10:30am BCPL Kindergarten Boot Camp, 12:30 – 2:30pm FHS Music Boosters, 7:30pm BPD Veteran’s Day Lunch at White Pines Golf Club, 11:30am 11 BCPL Play to Learn, 10:30am BCPL Kindergarten Boot Camp, 12:30 – 2:30pm FHS Bison Boosters, 7pm BPD Board Meeting (Committee of the Whole) DGLC, 6pm 13 BCPL Friday Funday, 10am–12pm 12 BCPL Friday Funday, 10am–12pm BPD Registration deadline for Youth Basketball League, DGLC BPD Days off School DGLC, 7:30am-6pm BSD2 No School-Teacher Institute Day BCPL Intro to Microsoft Word, 10am BCPL Growing Readers, 10:30am BCPL Garden Club, 12:00pm BCPL Chess Club, 6:30pm BCPL Thanksgiving Fam.
