The Bensenville Water Park Lifeguard
Staff was awarded the Platinum International Aquatic Safety Award from
Ellis & Associates in March 2011 for
last summer’s superb performance!

Award is the highest Safety Award given to only the top 10 percent of clients
of Ellis & Associates, the Lifeguarding

Water Park Lifeguards are subject to
random unannounced Facility Audits
where they are videotaped in the Life-
guard chair without prior knowledge
and required to perform several simulated rescue scenarios. The entire Water Park staff prides itself on keeping

your own reading goal. Once you have achieved your goal you will receive a

Meet Your Library Trustees: Norb Banaszynski
Norb Banaszynski, also known as
“Mr. B” has held his spot on the
Bensenville Library Board since
1989. A former teacher, he now
spends his time subbing and helping customers at a hardware store.
Norb and his wife Cindy (aka “Mrs.
B”) have lived in Bensenville for 31
years and raised their three sons here.
Banaszynski’s been involved in innovative Library projects during his

tenure, including the New American
School Project, the Korthauer Log
House Restoration (also as an active
volunteer), CLeaRnet (a unique community network), the creation of the
Lifelong Learning Center, and the
Libraries Remember program. In his
spare time he loves being a grandpa.

2011 Wall of Fame Inductees
Fenton Community High School
recently inducted Charles Canfield,
Class of 1985, Elizabeth Miltz Haase,
Class of 1976, and Russ Rodriguez,
Class of 1975 into its distinguished
Alumni Wall of Fame.
Charles Canfield is a globally recognized leader in the field of corporate
governance. His time spent at Fenton
included being named an all-conference wrestler and serving as vice
president of the student council.
Elizabeth Miltz Haase is a teacher
of the deaf and hard of hearing in
the Wisconsin Metropolitan School
District. While at Fenton, she
received the Best Actress Award
for her performance in Anne Frank.
Russ Rodriguez has won three Emmy
Awards for sports broadcasting and is
the owner of Aesthetic Abstractions,
a company that provides production
services nationally for news, sports,
and special events. For detailed

Inductees were honored during a
dinner at White Pines Golf Course
surrounded by family, friends and
Fenton staff members. The following
day, the trio presented at two student
assemblies,
visited
individual
classrooms to answer questions, and
enjoyed a lunch prepared and served
by Fenton student chefs under the
direction of Family and Consumer
Sciences instructor, Angela Nelson.
During the two-day celebration, student leaders from the Class of 2011,
Alyssa Mathews, Stefanie Ronge, and
Claire Wassinger, accompanied the
honorees and introduced them at the
events. The culminating activity was
a tour of the Fenton campus where
each recipient had the opportunity to
visit with staff and view parts of the
building that held special memories.
The Wall of Fame was established
in 1995 by the District 100 Board of
Education in celebration of the Fortieth Anniversary of Fenton Community High School. The Wall of Fame
honors the achievements and contributions of the school’s outstanding
alumni. Applications for the 2013
Wall of Fame can be found on the

25th Annual Art Show

Spring Band Concert
Artist showcase scheduled for May 5
The Fenton High School Music
Department will host its last concert
of the school season on Wednesday,
May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the LewisHuffman Auditorium at the school.
Performances will highlight the
musical talents of the Concert Band,
Symphonic Winds, and Jazz Ensemble.
Senior band members will be honored
at this performance as well. Senior
soloists will be featured along with
music from New Orleans, the Circus,
Ragtime, a little rock and roll and
some band standards. Refreshments
will be served. This event is free and
open to the public.
Fenton Community High School’s 25th annual Art Festival will take place on
Thursday, May 5 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. in Gym 3 at the school. This event will
showcase the artistic talents of Fenton, Blackhawk Middle School, and Wood
Dale Junior High art students. In addition, senior citizen artists from Bridgeway
of Bensenville will participate. Awards will be presented and refreshments will
be served. This is a free event and open to the public.
Fenton was host to the Metro Suburban Art Conference. During the half-day
event, which included art workshops and an art competition, Fenton placed
second overall with seven high schools in attendance. Junior McKenzie Kern
received a second-place award and a prestigious Best of Show in the Realistic Art category. Other awards were presented to Mercedes Cardenas, Pamela
Martinez and Angel Flores. Flores was previously honored during the Elmhurst
College Art Show with a special recognition scholarship award.
National Honor Society Induction

Ceremony scheduled for May 12
The newest members of the Fenton High School chapter of the National Honor
Society will be inducted on Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. During the ceremony, senior NHS members will have an opportunity to show their gratitude
for the support they received during their time at Fenton. NHS is open to all
students who exhibit scholarship, leadership and service.

The 2011 Relay for Life of Besenville
Wood Dale is scheduled for June 4-5
at Fenton High School. This family
event offers everyone in the community an opportunity to raise awareness
and funds in the fight against cancer.
Congratulations Class of 2011
Graduation is set for May 22
Preparations are underway to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of
2011. On Thursday, May 19, Fenton will host its annual Senior Awards Night
to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the members of the senior class.
The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium and a reception
will immediately follow the presentation of several awards and scholarship
announcements.
The event provides an opportunity
for participants to celebrate cancer
survivors, honor those who have lost
their battle, and raise funds for the
American Cancer Society. Funds
raised for the event are used for
research, education, and local patient
services.
The event is open to the public and community members are encouraged to
attend.
Commencement exercises for the Class of 2011 will take place on Sunday, May
22 at Noon in the Field House at Fenton Community High School. Admission
to the ceremony is by ticket only. The event will last approximately one hour.
Musical selections will be performed by the Fenton choir and band as well as
speeches from select members of the graduating class.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday at
Johnson School you can hear 48 girls
in 3rd through 5th grade finishing their
workout with a cheer.

not only builds character and selfesteem, but also will improve their
academic performance.
Twice a week for an hour after school,
the 48 girls are divided into five teams
led by two to three adult volunteers.
They’re exercising, but they’re
also learning about healthy habits,
team building and self-esteem. The
culmination of the program will be
running a 5K on Saturday, June 4 in
downtown Chicago with hundreds
of other “Girls on the Run” from
throughout the Chicago area.
But as most things in life, it’s the
journey to the 5K, not the actual
event, that will make the biggest impact in the girls’ lives.
“I wanted to start exercising more,”
said 3rd-grader Gianna about why she
wanted to participate in the program.
“I like running around the school

“Already I’ve noticed the girls pushing themselves to do better, encouraging each other and supporting each
other,” Ms. Ban said.
All of the teachers, support staff and
community members are volunteering
their time as coaches. They had
to complete training through the
umbrella organization, and use the
established curriculum. This program
came at a cost of $82.50 per girl.
A generous donation of $3,500 by
Victory Auto Wreckers through the
Bensenville Chamber of Commerce,
along with other smaller donations,
covered the cost of girls whose
families could not afford the fee.
“I like doing it because I never get
to do this at my house and never got
to (run and train)
before,” said Joni,
a girl who won the
day’s energy award.

This $48 million project is a milestone for the community – one that celebrates a promising future for the children of
Bensenville and the community as a whole.
When all phases of both projects are complete, District 2 will close the doors at Chippewa School, originally built as a
high school in 1927 and Tioga School, its 81-year-old neighboring elementary school. We will also move out of Mohawk
School, an undersized, deteriorating school more than 50 years old.
There will be a short ceremony, including a student performance, and light refreshments will be served. Architectural
drawings and other details of the project will also be on display.
Tioga/Chippewa Construction Will Alter Before- and After-School Traffic
There will be limited traffic allowed on Memorial Road
before and after school, between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.
and 3:00 to 3:45 p.m., on school days beginning May 2.
Due to the construction at Tioga/Chippewa school site,
school buses will be loading and unloading on Memorial
Road. Parent traffic will be required to use the north-south
side streets.
Barricades will block traffic on Memorial Road during
these time periods, and no parking will be allowed on Memorial on school days. Construction traffic will be accessing the site from York Road and Washington Street.

The traffic plan was developed with the input from Bensenville police, parents, and community members. The traffic
plan will be in place beginning May 2 until the end of the
school year and for a short time when school starts for the
new school year.
Builders will be working through the summer to build a
new parent drop-off lane at the rear of Tioga School off
Addison Street. A bus drop-off lane will be built along
Memorial Road and is expected to be ready by late fall.

Everyone’s favorite free, family summer concert series, Music in the Park
begins June 8 and has something to offer for all musical tastes. This year’s
performers will include the always popular American English (Beatles), Led
Zeppelin, Styx and Eagles tribute bands, last year’s crowd favorite Caliente and
the groovy ’60s flashback band, the New Invaders. Seven special double bills,
will feature opening acts that spotlight Bensenville talent, including Bensenville
Young Musicians Mentor Band, Bag Shot Row, Hickey Bava Blues, Squirt,
Flyte and In Session.
Area restaurants will sell dinner and dessert items, so families can have “dinner
in the park” prior to the concert. Early in the evening, there will be free carriage
rides and an artist drawing caricatures for kids of all ages. Each concert night
will also include Classic Car Night. There is always a 50/50 split-the-pot raffle
that benefits our local charities and civic organizations. A complete schedule is
provided below and is also on the Village’s website.
Concerts will be held in Towne Center on Wednesday evenings. Due to requests
from our business community, sponsorship opportunities will be available. If

The celebration begins Friday evening, July 1, with the opening of a carnival
that will feature rides and games for all ages. The carnival will run throughout
the Fest, through Monday evening.
Our Independence Day Parade will step off at Sunday at 2 p.m. from Town
Center. The parade featuring some of the best bands, floats, and entertainment
from around the region will end at Redmond Park, where Taste of the Towns,
our four-town food festival featuring some of the favorite menu offerings in the
region, will be held.

There will be music and games throughout the four-day festival. Special concerts both Sunday and Monday evenings will be followed each night by a fireworks spectacular that will light up the night skies. A complete list of activities

Spring Brush Pickup
New Branch Drop Off
Location
From April through November, Allied Waste will pick up on your normal trash
collection day individual branches that are less than three feet in length and one
inch in diameter and are placed in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans
with two “Yard Waste Only” labels attached. Bundled brush/branches will not
be collected.
In addition to curbside brush removal, branches are accepted at the
Bensenville Brush Drop-off location
at 1050 S. County Line Road. The
drop-off location is available to incorporated Bensenville single-family
residents only. Residents must bring
a current drivers license for proof of
residency. Please contact the Public

with any questions. In 2011, the
drop-off location will be open in
April, June, August, and October.
The drop off site operation hours are:
Unbundled brush and branches are collected from single-family residences
twice each year by Village staff. For collection, brush must be placed at the curb
no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, May 16, in neat, manageable piles. Place the cut
ends of brush and branches facing the street. Individual branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or ten feet in length. Please do not bundle brush and
branches. To discard root balls, place small ones inside of your trash container
and larger ones next to your container. You may place brush on the parkway for
collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week. Please
note that each street will receive a single collection during a scheduled week
and that placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation
and no service.

Swim competitively against other Park District swim
teams that form the Du Page Swim Conference. Sportsmanship and healthy competition are emphasized while
having fun, learning new techniques and becoming part
of a team. Any child who is 6 to 18 years of age before
June 1, 2011 and who is able to swim one length of the
pool using a competitive stroke is eligible to join. Parents
are required to volunteer as officials and helpers for the
team. Meets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The
$105 fee entitles swimmers to instructional coaching during practice, competition in weekly swim meets, ribbons, a
conference patch and an end of season trophy and banquet.
