Tim Hudak highlights strengths of Career College sector
Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak experienced several career college programs first hand on February
4th during a showcase and reception hosted by Career Colleges Ontario.
Hudak toured the Medix College/North American Trade Schools Campus in Brampton, where the
event was being held, to learn about HVAC repairs and try his hand at making a Valentine’s Day
card with students in the Early Childcare Assistant program.
Hudak highlighted the strengths of the Career College sector during a speech at the reception in
front of over 60 career college representatives.
“As one of our most efficient paths to employment, we need to support career colleges by reducing
the regulatory burden, so they can equip students with the skills they need to gain access to the
job market,” said Tim Hudak.
The event was geared towards increasing awareness of the career college sector and its
contribution to the development of a skilled work force and the provincial economy.

Mississauga Transit: Post-Secondary Fare Update
CCO is pleased to announce that students
attending career colleges in Mississauga will
soon be eligible for the post-secondary transit
fare.
After a productive meeting with MiWay staff
and career college representatives earlier
this month, CCO has learned the following
information:
• Students attending career colleges in
Mississauga will be eligible for the post-secondary
student discount at the beginning of May
• The post-secondary student rate will be $2.45
per trip, as opposed to the adult rate of $3.25
• Students will have to go to the City Centre Transit
Terminal (200 Rathburn Rd. W., Mississauga) or
the TTC Islington Subway Station (MiWay Booth)
(1226 Islington Avenue, Toronto) to validate their
PRESTO card (an electronic, reloadable smart
card) as a “PS2” to obtain the post-secondary
fare
• When validating their card to obtain the
reduced fare, students will need to present a
confirmation of enrolment and a valid student
card
• The student card must include the following:
o The college name and logo
o The program end date
o A photo of the student
• The student card must also be presented
when using the PRESTO card
• Students will need to reactivate the student
fare in September with proof of their full-time
student status
• The PRESTO Card can be purchased online
(www.prestocard.ca) or in person at the City
Centre Transit Terminal or at the TTC Islington
Subway Station (MiWay Booth)

Exclusive CCO Member Event:
March 2014
Education Works Champions 2014
CCO would like to congratulate member career
colleges and their graduates that were selected
as Education Works Champions.
In 2012, CCO became involved with the Education
Works Alliance, a Grand Erie-based community
group with a focus on economic development
through training, education and lifelong learning.
This year marks the third year of the Alliance’s
Education Works Champion campaign. The
campaign highlights members of the Brant,
Brantford, Haldimand, Norfolk, New Credit and Six
Nations communities who have used education to
overcome many of life’s obstacles.
The nomination deadline for the 2014 champions
was November 30, 2013. The names and stories of
the 2014 champions were published mid-February
in a special insert included in community papers in
the Brantford and Haldimand-Norfolk regions.
These success stories highlight the value the career
college sector brings to our communities.

CCO at Cannexus14
For the second year in a row, CCO attended
the Cannexus Conference in Ottawa at the
end of January.
Cannexus is a national career development
conference put on by CERIC, the Canadian
Education and Research Institute for
Counselling.
This year’s conference celebrated CERIC’s
10th anniversary.
In addition to setting up an exhibit booth to
showcase the association and its members,
CCO Executive Director Paul Kitchin
presented a session on the sector and career
trends.
With over 700 delegates in attendance, CCO
had the opportunity to engage with many
counsellors, professional career coaches,
consultants and more during the conference.
CCO in Ottawa
While CCO staff was in Ottawa for the
Cannexus Conference at the end of January,
the association held a successful financial aid
training session and a member reception at
the Empire Grill. During the reception, CCO
Executive Director Paul Kitchin provided an
activity update and attendees were able to
connect with CCO staff and other members.

In our Special Edition Holiday Newsletter, published
in December 2013, we held a series of contests.
One of the contest prizes was a consulting session
with four leading career college specialists. The
winner of this contest was CCO member Laarnie
Tansingco of the Osilla Institute.
On February 24th, consultants Ann Robinson,
Carol Bruni, Cheryl Russell-Julien, and Judi Smith
met with Tansingco at her college to discuss a
variety of Career College topics.
Here’s what Tansingco had to say after the session:

yesterday and an honor to win this contest
through CCO. The advice and information that
we received from the Expert Consultants was
priceless and extremely informative. I will definitely
