Annual Report - Alzheimer`s Association
2012 Annual Report
Living
with
Alzheimer’s
Our vision is
a world without
Alzheimer’s.
Dear Friends,
This past year has been an extraordinary one for the Alzheimer’s
Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter. We invite
you to learn more about the highlights and to meet the families
we have profiled.
You’ll read about the New Hampshire family grappling with the changes in all their lives and the extended,
expansive family in Springfield who is still fighting the disease even after losing their beloved father. You will
also meet a man mourning, and celebrating, his wife of many years and a woman who memorialized her husband.
Alzheimer’s is intensely personal, as well as a national challenge of almost epidemic proportion.
It is for these reasons that we are accelerating our work. We are committed to helping families live successfully
with Alzheimer’s while we marshal all possible public and private resources to achieve our vision of a world
without Alzheimer’s. Here are some of the highlights of the tremendous progress we have made in the five
elements of our strategic plan.

Increasing Concern and Awareness: We know we need to engage more Americans in
this cause. We have seen increased media coverage of our cause, including a groundbreaking
Boston Globe series and multi-part WBUR Public radio series. We also engaged a number
of local and national companies such as: TJX, Dunkin’ Donuts, Rapid Refill and others in
cause-marketing relationships.
Advancing Public Policy: The hard work and dedication of our volunteer advocates in
New Hampshire and Massachusetts contributed to our nation’s first Alzheimer’s plan. We
secured a Massachusetts state Alzheimer’s plan as well and began work on a similar New
Hampshire plan. We saw legislation signed into law in Massachusetts to create nursing home
standards for dementia care, advancing the consistency of quality care.
Enhancing Care and Support: We met a clearly growing need, responding to 21% more
24/7 Helpline calls. We also launched an innovative program with Tufts Health Plan to reach
out to their Medicare beneficiaries with Alzheimer’s and we are poised to launch a similar
initiative with three Boston teaching hospitals.
Accelerating Research: We continue to serve as the global leader in research, funding
cutting edge programs and annually convening the world’s top researchers at the Alzheimer’s
Association International Conference. Locally, we coordinated closely with our talented and
dedicated research community and worked to educate our constituents about the latest
advances in the field.
Growing Revenue: With your help, we had a strong fundraising year, enabling us to expand
our support for families and simultaneously increase our investments in research. Thousands of
you supported our efforts at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s® ; terrific athletes ran, swam or rode
bikes to support the cause; and thousands more gave generously of their time and treasure.
We are committed to our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s. We thank you for helping bring us
several steps closer to this goal.

Highlights
As the leading voluntary health organization providing Alzheimer care,
support and research, we touch the lives of thousands of people each year.
On these pages, you can read about some of the highlights of our past
year. The numbers cannot show the tremendous depth of relationships
that occurs as our staff interacts with those whom we serve. We hope
that the profiles in this report provide a sense of the true emotion of
our work. All that we do is made possible by our donors and supporters.
Our initiatives can be captured in three most essential efforts:
Care, Cause and Cure.
In order to meet the growing need for Alzheimer programs, services and
research, the Alzheimer’s Association, MA/NH Chapter has continued
to grow. In May of this year, we moved to new headquarters—still in
Watertown, Massachusetts—providing increased space for staff, volunteers
and special events. We celebrated our move with a festive Open House
attended by more than 200 people in June. If you have not yet visited us, please
do stop by during 9-5 office hours at 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA.
We encourage you to learn more about our ongoing and new programs
by visiting us at www.alz.org/MANH.

Care
n
n
n
n
n
24/7 Helpline: We responded to more than 10,250 calls,
providing information, support and guidance to individuals,
family members and professional caregivers. We also offer
Helpline online to increase accessibility for those who
prefer to interact via the internet.
Care Consultation: Our individualized counseling
program provided more than 1,200 consultations at no
charge. Through Care Consultation sessions we provide
in-depth assistance to families. We utilize phone conferencing and e-mail contact, when appropriate, to make it
possible for those at a distance to be involved in family
discussions.
n
n
Programs for Individuals, Families and the
Community: We reached 9,750 people with support,
information and education at community events and
programs. We offered The Essential Skills education series
for family caregivers with topical programs on specific
challenges families often face: It Starts with Communication,
Understanding Behavior and Safety at Home.
Programs for Professionals: More than 3,600 professionals
participated in 130 of our workshops, programs or conferences. Along with another successful Map Through
the Maze conference, we launched our newly updated
Habilitation curriculum, “Caring for People with
Alzheimer’s Disease.” Since its launch, we have trained
more than 300 professionals to teach hands-on caregivers
the most effective dementia care strategies.
Special Publications: With support from the Massachusetts
Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA), we published
an Early Stage Guide for families, updated our popular
Family Care Guide, and reprinted our Later Stage Guide,
creating a coordinated series to help families navigate all
stages of this disease.
n
n
Support Groups: We increased our support group
capacity by more than 40 percent by offering trainings
for volunteer group leaders. In response to the growing
demand for increased support to those with younger-onset
Alzheimer’s (a more rare variation, occurring before age
65), we offered new support groups for those affected and
increased activity with the Children of Younger-Onset
Dementia (COYOD) program. We also created a support
group to assist family members of veterans in western
Massachusetts through the Soldier’s Home.
New Alliances: We implemented a new alliance with
Tufts Health Plan, providing counseling and support for
their Medicare Advantage HMO members who have
Alzheimer’s. We partnered with the Soldier’s Home in
Holyoke, MA to provide counseling and service referrals
for veterans and family members. We also presented
workplace education programs through our Alzheimer
Early Detection Alliance (AEDA), a collaborative relationship with employers, at TJX Corporation, State Street
Corporation, Tufts Health Plan, Sun Life and EMC,
among others. Overall, 49 firms have joined AEDA.
Innovation Grant: We launched a 3-year initiative, with
funding from the Eisenberg Family Trust, to directly link
patients of three Boston medical centers with our Alzheimer’s
counseling and support services.
Medical Liaison: Outreach to physicians is a crucial
building block as we seek to improve the rate of diagnosis
of Alzheimer’s from its current low of 50 percent. We
reached out to the medical community with presentations
at major conferences, including co-sponsorship of the
Harvard University Dementia Conference.

Legislative Initiatives: Governor Deval Patrick signed
into law our Dementia Special Care Unit bill, putting in
motion dementia specific regulations for nursing homes
in Massachusetts. This landmark legislation was the result
of dedicated work by our grassroots advocates as well as the
championing by key elected officials. Governor Patrick
also accepted the Alzheimer’s State Plan which we coauthored with the Executive Office of Elder Affairs.
The Plan creates a framework for coordination and
improvement of Alzheimer specific services across the
Commonwealth. We also began laying the groundwork
for a similar initiative in New Hampshire.
Advocates in Action: Our Massachusetts Alzheimer’s
Advocacy Action Day at the state house in Boston
galvanized advocates, resulting in the passage of our
legislation to establish quality of care requirements for
dementia special care units in Massachusetts nursing homes.
Advocates from New Hampshire and Massachusetts also
travelled to Washington, D.C. to meet with their elected
officials and other advocates at the annual Public Policy
Summit. Nationally, our advocates were key in securing
increased Alzheimer’s research funding at the National
Institutes of Health, with additional funding for caregiver
support—at the direction of President Barack Obama in
January.
Governor Patrick signed the Act Providing for Dementia-Specific Training
for Employees of Long-Term Care Facilities--a bill which we proposed
and championed to protect those who are in nursing homes and provide
increased peace of mind to their families. The signing was a proud day for
our advocates who worked hard to achieve passage. On hand were (l.-r.)
Paul Raia, PhD., VP of Clinical Programs; Jennifer Carter, Manager of Public
Policy; Betsy Fitzgerald-Campbell, VP of Communications and Public
Affairs; State Representatives Kathi-Anne Reinstein and Alice Wolfe;
State Senator Pat Jehlen; Ann Hartstein and Sandra Albright (EOEA), Board
member Thomas Croswell; President/CEO James Wessler; and longtime
advocate Mary Pacella. (Photo by Jeremiah Robinson/Governor’s Office)

Walk to End Alzheimer’s : In the fall of 2011, a record
18,000 people turned out to raise public awareness and
money to support the programs and research of the
Alzheimer’s Association at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s
at locations across New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest
public awareness and fundraising effort. We raised more
than $2.3 million at walks across Massachusetts and
New Hampshire, to support research, education and
care programs.

Media: Our work with WBUR public radio resulted in
a 13-part NPR series, “Fade to Darkness,” chronicling
the impact of Alzheimer’s and earning a New England
Healthcare Communicators award. Our work with The
Boston Globe brought to light the overuse and abuse of
antipsychotic medications in nursing homes in a hardhitting series. Overall, we saw a total of more than 101
million media impressions, telling the Alzheimer story
in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
AlzTogether: Our young professionals group, AlzTogether
expanded its membership and sponsored a series of
fundraising and networking events throughout the year
including hosting a “Night of Light” at the Prudential
Tower as the top of the tower was lit purple for our cause.
Purple with a Purpose Public Awareness: For
World Alzheimer’s Day 2011, we teamed up once more
with Dunkin’ Donuts. More than 1,000 Dunkin’ stores
in eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire
offered a special purple-sprinkled donut to raise money
and awareness.

One Thing video: Our all-volunteer communications
taskforce took the lead in creating a video designed to
reach and engage those of younger generations affected
by Alzheimer’s—adult children and grandchildren. The
result was “One Thing,” asking people on the street
“What’s one thing you never want to forget?” The video
has struck a chord and is accumulating thousands of views
on YouTube and connecting people to the cause and the
Alzheimer’s Association.
The moving Remembrance Ceremony at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s
unifies us and strengthens our resolve to end Alzheimer’s.

Food for Thought: Top Boston-area chefs joined together
to raise funds and awareness. Ten chefs participated in
a photo/video shoot, with the resulting images used in
social media to promote a week-long program at their
restaurants when they would offer a special appetizer and
donate 100% of the proceeds to the cause.
Cause Marketing: As we seek to engage a broader audience and raise awareness of the need for increased research
funding, we are expanding our cause marketing initiatives.
In the past year, we launched a donation program with
Rapid Refill service stations in eastern Massachusetts and
also joined with a micro-brewery, White Birch Beer, in
New Hampshire for a time-limited special brew called
“Unforgettable” that generated a donation to our Memory
Ride for Research program.

2011 Research Grants. Six Massachusetts scientists shared
part of the $13 million in Alzheimer’s Association grants
for their innovative projects. Three of the grantees received
the New Investigator Research Grants. The Alzheimer’s
Association is the largest non-profit funder of research into
causes and treatments, and someday a cure.
2011 Memory Ride for Research. Our premier cycling
event, raising money for research, grew exponentially in
2011 as FOX25 TV became a media sponsor and produced
and aired more than 100 free promotional spots. More
than 400 cyclists wound their way over a 100 mile course,
bringing the total raised by the Ride since its inception to
more than $2.75 million for research.

21st Annual Matthew & Martha Simons Symposium
on Alzheimer’s Disease. More than 300 people
attended our premier scientific presentation on “Genes
& Alzheimer’s Disease: Lessons in Moving the Mountain
into the Lab,” by Dr. Gerard D. Schellenberg, founder
and head of the national Alzheimer’s Disease Genetics
Consortium.
On the Cutting Edge of Alzheimer’s Research: Our
annual research review presentation was attended by more
than 380 people who came to hear from the Alzheimer’s
Association’s 2011 national research grantees from
Massachusetts. The panel discussion was moderated by
Robert Stern, PhD. of the Boston University Alzheimer’s
Disease Research Center.

Dementia: A Comprehensive Update: The Chapter was
once again the official co-sponsor of the Harvard Medical
School’s major annual dementia conference; Chapter staff
presented in a plenary session to more than 250 physicians.
PriMed National Conference: We collaborated with
our national office to staff one of the largest events in the
country for primary care physicians, directly interacting
with 400 clinicians.
Alzheimer’s Association International Conference:
We began planning with our national office for the
Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, to be
held in Boston in July of 2013. The honor of being host
city to our international conference which draws thousands
of the best and brightest researchers in the world also
creates opportunities to broaden the research discussion
for those we serve.

Finding
Balance
Margaret Law
Margaret and Lewis Law had a natural balance
to their lives. The balance was evident in their
sailing, skiing and ice skating. They had parallel
careers at Harvard—he as an electronic engineer
first at the Cambridge Electronic Accelerator,
and later, director of computer services at the
Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Margaret conducted
research for 17 years and went on to serve as
registrar for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
and later, director of the Physics Department.
Altogether, she had a 41 year career; he, 31 years.
Lew’s career, by all rights, should have lasted
as long as Margaret’s, since he was just two
years her senior. However, at age 58 he began
experiencing memory problems.
We thank those
who opened their
homes to us so
that the story of
Alzheimer’s could
be told.
“He had trouble communicating. Basically,
he couldn’t handle his job,” said Margaret Law
as she looked back on the years that led up to
Alzheimer’s. “The main problem was depression
because he knew what was happening.” By 60,
he retired.

Both born in Birmingham, England, Margaret
and Lew met at a local church youth group,
playing table tennis. She was 14; he was 16.
After university, they came across the Big Pond,
living first in Canada then on to Cambridge
and positions at Harvard.

“It was the thing to do post-doc. Everyone came
for two years to the U.S.” Margaret said of the
beginning of their journey that would take
them from life in post-war Britain eventually to
their home in Arlington. “We never planned to
stay.” That was 53 years ago.
Lew was the one who discovered their home
with a generous backyard sloping down to the
shore of Mystic Lake. They sailed and raced in

regattas competitively on the lake. Margaret
would take a morning swim each day before
work. They also kept a boat in the Virgin Islands
for sailing. When Margaret talks about their
lives, the extent of the balance they found in
work and leisure, and each other, is evident.
Lew was never formally diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s. He knew it when it arrived. His
mother, a grandmother, and a sister all had
dementia. Ever the scientist, he wanted more
information about the disease that had intruded
on his life.
“Someone recommended the Alzheimer’s
Association. Lew found a support group and
the first year he went on his own,” Margaret
said. It was not long before she followed. They
became involved in Association events, him
speaking publically about the disease. They

attended the Alzheimer’s Association national
public policy forum in Washington, D.C. and
met with elected officials to ask for more
Alzheimer research funding.
“He really felt useful, and being involved with
activities helped him a lot,” said Margaret. She
also found friends—friends that she still meets
with monthly for lunch.
“Just being able to talk about it and get it off
your chest with people in the same situation
was so helpful.”
As the disease progressed, Lew continued to
find ways to remain active, though he was
retired. He worked on a newsletter for the
Harvard Retirees Association until managing
the technical aspects became too challenging.
They could no longer safely sail—he had been
the skipper and she crewed—so they took to
big boats with cruises in Alaska, Panama,
Costa Rica, Mexico and the Columbia River.
When his balance meant he could no longer
ride a bicycle, they got him a large trike which
he rode until that also became a safety issue.
He could no longer ski.
His life began to close in, but he kept a spirit
of discovery. When they learned about the
Rogerson House day program through the
support group, Lew was quick to suggest he
attend. He continued for nearly four years.
Margaret got by as full-time caregiver with
some outside help, until she became ill and
required a week in the hospital. Through her
support group, a nursing home placement was
found for Lew. He stayed on after she returned
home, making a natural transition to a care
setting.
“I was lucky that way,” she said. “It just happened
and wasn’t a big decision.”
anniversary that they celebrated at the nursing
home shows her in a white dress, him in a
wheelchair.
“I had brought the dress and went and changed.
When I came out, I found the staff had decorated
tables and set out refreshments. And Lew had
the most wonderful smile when he saw me.”
The end came for him at 78, twenty years
after the memory problems first plagued him.
Margaret lost the boy she met at a teen dance—
the man who became her partner in sailing,
ice dancing, work, life.
The year before he died, she looked for a way
to bring the balance back into her own life. She
had stopped ice skating after a fall that resulted
in cracked vertebrae. At 75, she called a local
Fred Astair Dance Studio and signed up for
lessons. She dances five days a week and travels
around the country competing against other
studios. Her favorite dance is the quickstep;
Dancing With the Stars is one of her favorite
shows on television. Hanging on the back of
her bedroom closet door is a sleek red dress
sporting a delicate flounce and adorned with
crystal cabochons and sequins.
“I can’t resist buying new dresses for the
competitions,” she said. “It’s given me a
new life.”
Before Lew died, they decided together that
they wanted to make a significant gift to the
Alzheimer’s Association. Neither wanted to
wait—since they saw the need for more research,
more support for families like them. She began
the first of four contributions while Lew was
still alive. The decision seemed as natural as
the pose she strikes in a photograph taken at a
recent competition. In the Law’s partnership
and marriage, they found the balance; they
found what was right for them. n

We rely on the talents and
dedicated time of many
volunteers, including the
members of our all-professional Communications
Taskforce. The Taskforce this
year took the lead in creating
major public awareness
programs including “One
Thing,” a moving video
playing to great acclaim on
YouTube. Team members

Elaine S. Reisman
Hometown: Lexington, MA
Member of the Founders Society
Elaine and Bernard (Bernie) Reisman were
regulars at Alzheimer’s Association events and
programs of all kinds. They believed in being
involved. Bernie was the founding director of
the Hearthstein Program for Jewish Community
Service at Brandeis University. Elaine taught
early childhood education at Leslie College
until 2000.
In 1995, Bernie was showing signs of forgetfulness; five years later he retired from Brandeis.
Their doctors assured them they were doing
everything right—Bernie stayed involved in
activities. They also discovered the Alzheimer’s
Association. With support and care consultation
sessions with Manager of Care Consultation
Susan Rowlett, they found an assisted living
program when he needed increased care and
later, placement at the VA.
“We knew we wanted to leave money to the
Alzheimer’s Association because we were both
very grateful for what the Association had done.
Not only was there support, they opened up
the chance for us to become advocates for the
cause on a national level,” Elaine said. Bernie
and Elaine attended the national Public Policy
Forum to advocate for increased federal research
funding.
In that spirit of gratitude, Elaine became a
member of the Founders Society.
In 2011, Elaine and Bernie celebrated their
60th wedding anniversary and shortly after,
he lost his long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Life is in the Details
Brenda and Ken Bouchard celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary
on Valentine’s Day 2012. They met through a mutual friend. Brenda, a
court reporter, fell for Ken, a successful trial lawyer and general litigator
in New Hampshire. He brought three children to the relationship; together
they had their daughter Briana.
They’re living in their dream house in rural New Hampshire, designed
by Ken to be environmentally friendly with solar panels and a geothermal
system. Southern exposure with French doors and arched windows
cascades sunlight into the cathedral-ceilinged living room. Ken cleared

the sloping pastureland in front of the house
for a view that allows them to watch does and
fawns frolic in the early morning.
Life is in the details; and the details are now
complicated.
Two years ago at age 64, Ken was diagnosed
with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease with
Lewy Body variable. He and Brenda knew
there was a risk since his mother was one of
10 children, of which 8 are believed to have
had Alzheimer’s. Ken is one of five children;
a brother has already died with younger-onset
Alzheimer’s.
“Ken was a very active man, a senior partner,
who organized the practice, spent time with
our four children, including soccer and all that
kind of thing,” said Brenda.
“We shared the marriage 50-50. There is so
much heartache watching your spouse’s life
cut short after having lived a good and hardworking life,” she said.
Ken, the trial lawyer, has fewer words these
days though when he does answer, some of the
courtroom intensity is still there in his eyes.
When asked how he felt about the diagnosis:
“It’s very strange, but it didn’t bother me very
much.”
“Ken turned from having memory issues to
not being able to connect ideas sequentially,”
said Brenda. “We saw our PC who sent us
to MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital)
neurology department.” It took five months
to get an appointment with Dr. Mark Albers at
MGH. Ken underwent an MRI and spinal tap.
“I worry about how
people are financially
coping. The cost is
enormous, the worry
and fear is tremendous.”
“Prior to the diagnosis, when we knew what
was happening—to know you’re losing the love
of each other’s life—it was hard,” said Brenda.
The news was difficult for the children as well.
“There was denial, dysfunction, fear—we had
really all of them.”
Briana, a teenager at the time, is now in college.
“Looking back we were less surprised than
some people,” Briana said. She finds it difficult
to share with peers. “People have no idea how
to respond to him, or us.”
Ken retired from his law practice and his world
became the beautiful home in the rolling New
Hampshire countryside. The family “hit the

floor running,” Brenda said, putting in place
the legal and financial details in their lives so
that they would be ready for what lay ahead.
However, a trip to the hospital for back surgery
that Ken required turned their lives upside down,
again. Like many others, Ken experienced a
significant change due to the anesthesia.
“The day before he went in, he was driving the
car. He came out two and a half weeks later and
literally did not know what his toothbrush was
for,” said Brenda. Beyond that, he experienced
hallucinations and mild paranoia, though he
was only on a narcotic painkiller for 24 hours.
During the recovery, he was in and out of
rehab twice.
“We felt as though we were catapulted years
ahead in the disease, overnight. It was an
enormous change that we weren’t set up for
nor were we prepared for. It was a crisis, but
I just had to keep going and had to keep us all
upbeat.” At 54, Brenda had become a caregiver
for her husband.
Briana took steps that ultimately helped the
family prepare emotionally for the road ahead.
She had taken an internship at a company that
sponsored a team in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
She asked her mother to join her.
“I did not want to do it. I wanted to deal with
this on my own.” Brenda smiled at her daughter. “I knew there was a method to her plan
because every booth we walked by, she picked
up pamphlets.”
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s was a turning
point for Brenda.
“I got to hold the caregiver flower for the
promise garden. It was like the scarlet letter.
I did not want it.” Despite her resistance, she
realized that their family was part of a bigger
community. “It’s not only me.” Brenda then
made the call that made a difference. She called
the Alzheimer’s Association and scheduled a
free care consultation with Ronda Randazzo,
care consultant. What followed was help and
connection. She took part in a telephone-based
early-stage support group—she did not have
to leave Ken alone to attend. In the Children
of Younger-Onset Dementia support group,
Briana found peers who understood her.
“People get so caught up in the disease, but
don’t make plans for themselves—I wasn’t
making plans for myself,” Brenda said.
“I knew he’d get the care he needed. I was
worried about her,” Briana said.
“Sometimes when the diagnosis occurs, people
leave you,” said Brenda. She counted their family
as lucky to have an “awesome threesome” –
Ken; her 86-year-old mother, Cecile Balevre
who has lived with them for the past 17 years;
and her sister Sally who is a regular companion
for both Ken and Cecile.
Ken spends his days now in the company of
Tom Murdoch, a professional companion the
family found through the help of the New
Hampshire Office of the Alzheimer’s Association. Tom makes it possible for Ken to spend
time outside, working in the garden and on the
grounds around the house. Ken is able to “get a
good kind of tired from being outside,” according to Brenda.
“I worry about how people are financially
coping. The cost is enormous, the worry and
fear is tremendous. After being emotionally
and physically exhausted and devastated by
this disease, to know you have to soldier on
to be able to maintain a roof over your head,
maintain health insurance and think about
saving for your own future is overwhelming
and another enormous burden and stress that
younger-onset caregivers are faced with.”
And the challenges will continue. Looking out
on their cleared acres ringed by still more acres
of forest, the worry of wandering is one that
must be faced. Brenda has looked into Lo-Jack—
it’s not available where they live—and met with
local police.
“We made the decision that we are staying
here. He loves it and it enhances his quality
of life.” n

Sharing Trust
H. Douglas Barnshaw, MD
Sympathy cards ringed the dining room,
atop sideboards and tables. Libby (Elizabeth)
Barnshaw’s battle with frontotemporal
dementia (FTD) had ended just days before.
When Doug Barnshaw had agreed to talk
about their experience, his wife was still in
the later stages of the disease.
They had met in high school but connected
again at the University of Pennsylvania—he
in med school, she in nursing.
“One of our first dates was after I got my pilot’s
license. I took her for a flight, wondering how
would the relationship go? Would she trust
me?” said Doug. Apparently, that date was not
the decision-maker because they dated, broke
up and got together again.
In the end, trust was what they had.
After med and nursing school, Doug and Libby
moved to Billings, Colorado where she worked at
Planned Parenthood. He worked at a community
mental health program. When they returned
east 10 years later, she switched careers and
became certified as a math teacher.
32 | Douglas Barnshaw
“She liked me being
there. She became
very non-verbal but
she liked my attention
and I was glad I could
give her that.“
Growing up, Libby would follow her father, who
was an engineer, around the house, learning
how to do things. She brought that same
curiosity and the skills she learned to her adult
life. She renovated a vacation cabin outside
Bennington, Vermont that was “her little slice
of heaven.” She supervised contractors there
and designed unique built-in furniture. Doug
called it part of her legacy. She was a doer by
temperament.
Her last big project was the house that Doug
now lives in alone. Her personality radiates from
every corner. They bought the house in 2000.
Set in a residential neighborhood not far from
downtown Springfield, this was to be her dream
house. She set to work choosing contractors,
selecting vintage wallpaper and paints, creating a
perfectly laid out kitchen with custom designed
cabinets. The quilts she loved to make are
displayed around the house, mixing in with art
from their stay in the Southwest.
“Her self-sufficiency was very important to her.
Her maiden name was Wright,” Doug smiled.
“That sums it up.”
Douglas Barnshaw | 33
A psychiatrist, now retired, Doug kept notes
when he started noticing Libby’s decline. In
2005, she began having memory problems and
repeating things, he said. Libby was 68.
After the memory problems began, Libby had
a CT scan and blood tests done when they
consulted a neurologist.
“Based on her symptoms, the doctor diagnosed
FTD,” Doug said.
“She had it for 7 years, but she never recognized
it,” he said. A woman both active and engaged
in life, she faded out of social things she had
loved. In addition to the quilting, she was an
avid bridge player and worked Sudoku puzzles.
She was involved with Doug at a local Unitarian
church, where the assembly hall is decorated
with her quilts. She was the family’s domestic
engineer, allowing Doug to help if he “didn’t
interfere too much.”
However, Libby focused on what she thought
was a bladder infection. She had an operation to
deal with the increasing bladder problems; she
became semi-delusional after the surgery. It is
not uncommon for those with Alzheimer’s or
other dementias to experience an escalation of
symptoms after undergoing anesthesia.
The self-sufficiency that had served her so well
throughout her life as a homemaker, teacher,
and mother of their two children became a
challenge.
Doug turned to the Springfield office of the
Alzheimer’s Association for information and
support. When he tried to line up help he ran
into resistance from Libby.
“She didn’t want a homemaker. She only went
one or two times to daycare. I found another
one, run by a religious order with beautiful
grounds—she didn’t like it,” Doug said.
Libby’s anxiety increased.
34 | Douglas Barnshaw
As Doug described the decline, his own emotions
around the memories surfaced as tears.
“I would go out to get the groceries and she’d
greet me with a bundle of clothes. When I
returned, she’d say we were being evicted by
the owners.”
The dream house was no longer her house.
Doug found that if he took her for a ride in
the car, she would eventually settle down.
“We took a lot of rides.”
He had been going regularly to his Alzheimer
support group and realized from the discussions
that it was important to keep himself healthy.
The statistics on caregiver decline are wellestablished. It is not uncommon for a caregiver
to predecease a spouse with Alzheimer’s. In 2010,
he had her admitted for what was to be a twoweek stay so he could have a break. Impressed
by the facility and the dementia services, he
decided it was a good permanent placement
for her.
As he dealt with the changes in their lives, he
became more involved in the Alzheimer cause.
In the spring of 2012, he attended the Alzheimer’s
Association national public policy forum and
advocated for increased research funding. He
attended the Walk to End Alzheimer’s to raise
money and public awareness.
Meanwhile, Doug continued to rely on both
the Association support group and a group for
family members at the assisted living facility.
He had already put in place all the legal and
financial details of their lives.
“You need both the expertise for the nuts and
bolts of making decisions as well as the sharing
with other people going through something
similar,” Doug said. Some of his decisions were
based on understanding Libby. “No feeding
tubes, because she liked to eat.” And it helped
that the full family—their children and Libby’s
brother—were in agreement.
Doug visited her every day as part of his regular
routine.
“She liked me being there. She became very
non-verbal but she liked my attention and I
was glad I could give her that. I could still take
her on rides.” He paused. “Looking back…
She didn’t call me Doug.”
“At the beginning she said take me home but
she didn’t persist. There was just one time when
she said I couldn’t do this without you.”
On the Wednesday before she died, the nurses
had Libby up and out of bed. He had brought
her a rose from the carefully tended garden in
back of their house.
“I rubbed one foot, then she put up the other
foot to be rubbed,” he said. In that simple gesture,
he felt their connection. And true to herself,
she was still directing things in their life. n

It Takes a Team
Santiago Family
The Santiago sisters did not sit by and watch Confesor, their father,
descend into Alzheimer’s. They came together as a team. And as a team
they are fighting back against the disease. They have recruited 35
members for Nuestro Pueblito (Our Little Town), their family Walk to
End Alzheimer’s team. They organize a small festival with a tag sale and
Puerto Rican foods that their mother Monserate Rodriquez helps make.
This year, they added a Zumbathon.
Visiting at the home of Mary Irizarry, a granddaughter of the family,
it’s easy to see that bonding is what comes naturally. A kitchen island has
been laid out with snacks for the interview team, including Surullitos
de Maiz, a homemade family favorite—a type of cornmeal stick with
a tomato dipping sauce. Mary’s husband scoots quickly through at one
point. Caregiving, and talking about it, is a women’s world. Fortunately
for Confesor, Papi, he had five daughters plus a son.
The women sat close together on the couch—Maria, Ramona, Carmen,
Martina and Juana—flanking their mother. Mary translated questions
and responses—but as each woman spoke, the others nodded in agreement.
They had come through the experience, perhaps even closer than when
they began.
This interview was
conducted largely in
English to Spanish
translation and with
all members of the
family speaking,
therefore attribution
is not given to a
single speaker,
but to the family
as a whole.
“We do everything together,” they said.
The family moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico in 1984. Two years
later, they began to notice that Papi was doing things out of the ordinary.
“If the TV was on, he wouldn’t change channels. He was afraid of pictures
on the wall. He became paranoid. He wouldn’t make plans, nor would
he stay alone.”
He was no longer the hardworking man they had known. He no longer
tended the garden and yard. He no longer babysat his grandchildren, of
which there are 14 plus 4 great-grandchildren.
In 2007, things became worse. An MRI scan confirmed Alzheimer’s.
Then 84—Monserate is 20 years younger than him—he required

constant watching. That’s when the team began. It was difficult for them
to see him upset; there were nights when he didn’t sleep.
“He gave up.”
A priest from the Church of the Holy Sacrament would come to their
home and give communion and lead them in prayer groups.
“Papi said the nuns would come and visit, but there were no nuns.”
The daughters rotated shifts and took care of him.
Though they did not find services at the Alzheimer’s Association—at the
time Spanish language support groups were not offered—they did rely
on his doctors.
“Our experience with his doctor was excellent. He was available for family
meetings and at every decline he would explain what was happening and
tell us what to expect.”
The good moments are still treasured, though they lost him nearly three
years ago.
“He would never forget names and faces, even the grandchildren, right
up to the very last.”
They were able, with their shared duties, to keep him at home up until
the last six months.
“One of the doctors recommended we care for him at home. The doctor
gave us the option of a nursing home, but suggested that Alzheimer’s
would go faster in long-term care. We feel that’s why he knew us—
because he saw us every day.” Confesor remained at home until the last
six months, at which time he entered hospice care.
“He never forgot who we were. On his last day, he was calling for us.
He passed away with the whole family. And he’s in peace. He’s okay.
I know that.”
And their team continues on.
“We saw that there was not enough Hispanics participating in the Walk.
By doing it and talking to others, we now see more coming along as
well. We all walk and bring our children and grandchildren. Everyone.
“I like to participate because I feel I’m helping other families. Whatever
people can give, even if it’s a dollar, it’s helping families.”
“When I talk to other people about what my father went through—we’re
happy because every year we are getting more people involved.” n

Run for
the Memory
Our Run for the Memory program began in 2002, when a group of runners approached us with a
goal of running the Boston Marathon® while promoting awareness and fundraising. The program has
grown from the single marathon to a year-round athletic program raising more than $2 million since
it began. We now also partner with Reach the Beach Relay Series, Max Performance Triathlon
Series, Boston’s Run to Remember and the New Balance Falmouth Road Race. We are grateful
to our event partners and the more than 400 athletes who participated this past year. Highlighted
here are the Run for the Memory top fundraisers.

Road Race, Boston’s Run to Remember, Max Performance Triathalon Series, and Reach the
Beach Relay Series in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. (Photo by Kevin Scarborough)
Memory
Ride
Memory Ride was established in 1997 by the Noonan Family to raise funds for Alzheimer research.
Over the past 16 years, Memory Ride has raised more than $2.75 million to fund research through
the Alzheimer’s Association’s global research grants program. In 2011, 425 dedicated cyclists traversed
the rolling hills of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, raising more than $425,000 for research.
We are grateful to the cyclists, corporate sponsors and volunteers who worked together to make
2011 a successful year. Highlighted are the top fundraising cyclists and teams.
