Dog World is Britain’s best selling weekly canine newspaper, and
deals with all aspects of pedigree dogs.
It’s core readership consists of people involved in breeding, exhibiting and
competing with dogs, not only in the show ring but in popular sports such
as agility, obedience and gundog work. Each issue also contains so much
information of interest to those who keep dogs purely as pets.
The paper contains the latest news concerning dogs from Britain and
overseas, columns from an expert team of specialist writers, notes from the
individual breeds, reports from dog shows at home and abroad, including
the judges’ opinions of their winners, and details of forthcoming events plus
features on specific breeds or dog clubs.
The highlight of the dog show year is Crufts held every March, and Dog
World marks this with a large preview special, a colour supplement featuring
the top winners of the previous year, and a comprehensive report issue giving
full results from the show.
The prestigious glossy Dog World Annual is produced each December.
The company also produces videos and television programmes under the
dogworld.tv banner. For full details go to the website www.dogworld.co.uk.
Dog World runs, together with dog food firm Eukanuba, the Pup of the Year
competition with its final in the autumn and compiles and co-sponsors the Top
Dog, Stud Dog and Brood Bitch points competitions.
The paper was founded in 1902 as The Illustrated Kennel News and changed
to its present title in 1921. Subscriptions can be taken out for the print edition,
digital edition or both.

The heartbeat of Discover

T
HE SUN shone brightly over
the Home Park for the 65th
Windsor championship dog
show. A warm welcome, not
just from the sunshine, met all
visitors to the showground over the
four-days.
The approach to the showground
is scenic and easily navigated, with
excellent clear signposting along
the route. Members benefit from a
dedicated car park which is close
to the entrance. The clear signage
extends into the show site, which is
extremely well laid out with benching
close to the generous sized indoor/
outdoor rings.
The beautiful historic town of
Windsor, with the castle overlooking
the showground, and the river running
through, provides a lovely holiday
setting and is a favourite among
caravanners, so it comes as no surprise
that the campsite was full again this
year, with a waiting list.
There really is a summer atmosphere
surrounding the show. Undoubtedly,
the favourable weather helps, but so
too does the Pimm's and strawberries
and cream available. The pretty white
picket fencing and floral arrangements
surrounding the admin tents just add to
the summer feel while making it easy
for exhibitors and visitors to locate the
secretary, treasurer, overseas visitors'
lounge and judges' reception.
Always a popular event on the dog
show calendar, Windsor attracted an
entry of 9,305 dogs making 11,405
entries, an increase of nearly 700
dogs on the 2014 entry; the committee
members expressed their appreciation
for the support from exhibitors.
A number stakes classes were on
offer, one of which was the new
Windsor open charity stakes, this year
held in memory of Ch Allmark Indecent
Proposal, the Australian Shepherd
owned and bred by Angie and Neil
Allan and Robert Harlow, and coowned with Paul Routledge. 'Sunny'
had to be put to sleep following
National Working and Pastoral Breeds
last year having, it was thought, been
poisoned.
Shocked and saddened at the tragic
loss of Sunny, friends in Australian
Shepherds and the dog show world
set about trying to organise a suitable
tribute to the three-year-old top winning
dog. Jayne Holligan got the ball rolling
and contacted Windsor with the idea
for the stakes class, while Glynis and
Colin Dowson went round all the trade
stands and garnered up support and
sponsorship. The prize money for the
class, totalling £140 each day, was
donated by team Allmark and friends
of Sunny.
The entry fees for the class were
donated to the Cinnamon Trust, the
national charity which helps elderly
and terminally ill people with their
pets, chosen because it is a charity
which is personal and helps dogs and
people. The special classes were very
well supported and attracted 182
entries over the course of the show.
There was a lot of different events
going on apart from the dog show
including the Kennel Club Scruffts heat
which had over 30 entries from nonpedigree dogs, all vying to qualify for
the final.
On Saturday Windsor played host to

sport of dog showing is like. Two of
the dog world’s most prestigious
competitions are held at the event
with the Junior Warrant Winner
of the Year semi-finals on the
Saturday and UK Junior Handler of
the Year on the Sunday.
On the Saturday it was the
JW semi-finals – the ten winners
go on to compete at Crufts. This
year’s judges at Discover Dogs
were Dagmar Kenis Pordham and
Keith Young, who each selected
five from the JW winners who had
qualified at heats held around the
country. The competition was well
supported around the ring and
the ten qualifiers were evidently
excited to know that they would
be going on to challenge at the
final.
On Sunday it was the much
coveted UK Junior Handler of the
Year final judged by Suzy Roffey
and the contest saw recent history
repeat itself as a boy, Harvey Small,
triumphed and qualified for the
International Junior Handler of the
Year final held at next year’s Crufts.
The competition, sponsored by
DOG WORLD, was full of quality
with second placed Antonia Leech
and third Lauren Bridges both
giving Harvey a run for his money.
Harvey Small handled his French
Bulldog to perfection and was
confident and assured with the
Nova Scotia Duck Toller, the breed
the six finalists were given as their
alternative breed and only had an
hour to get to know.
These competitions were
held in the main ring, which was
situated at one end of ExCel’s
narrow hall, and which was home
to a multitude of crowd-pleasing
displays and contests over the
duration of the weekend.
While they performed solo in
other rings the main ring gave
Richard Curtis and Mary Ray the
opportunity to duet in heelwork
to music routines which provided
great entertainment to for the

enormously helpful in the first 2 years of building my K9 CleanCoats
business. I have been amazed to find so many people throughout
Europe were aware of my product having seen the adverts in Dog

their advertising team a pleasure to deal with, if she says she will do

Rescue and Rehome
Rescue and Rehome
Increasing numbers of
stray and abandoned
dogs are being taken in
by charity dog homes and
breed rescues every year,
a situation only made
worse by European puppy
traffickers flooding the
UK pet market with unvaccinated and often mentally
traumatised puppies. A vast proportion of the public
still seem to be uneducated and poorly advised
when it comes to choosing a puppy best suited to
their lifestyle, leading to dogs being abandoned for
sometimes the most trivial of reasons. We talk to those
on the front line of rescue and rehoming, where kennel
space and resources are a constant worry, and ask
them what needs to be done to prevent this problem
becoming a national crisis.

A holistic approach is becoming increasingly

In this feature we examine these ideas, and discover
