GREETINGS
in the name of our risen Savior, Jesus Christ!
The church theme for First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2012 was “Moving Forward.” Not resting on our
laurels, we declared “Moving Forward with a Double Portion” for our 2013 theme. This mantra was taken
from 2 Kings 2:1-10, when Elisha asked for a double portion of his mentor Elijah’s anointing to be upon him.
What set Elisha apart is that he not only found a mentor, but he followed Elijah’s instructions and picked up
his mantle – producing 32 miracles to his mentor’s 16.
“Moving forward” denotes progression and movement. With the law of physics, it is impossible to be still and
move forward simultaneously. “Double portion” refers to something twice as large or strong. More than just a
buzz word, “collaboration” was the key to our impact. Reflecting on this year, we are proud of the way God’s
people at FBCG responded to the challenge of collaborating among the various 115 ministries. Throughout
this annual report, you will read how our outreach efforts were the most impactful they’ve ever been in the
history of this church!
If you want to receive a double portion of God’s anointing, we strongly encourage you to find a mentor
and pour back into others’ lives by mentoring. The Holy Spirit will empower you if you’re committed. But
first, you’ve got to get plugged in and pick up the mantle by serving, volunteering and leading. And then
watch God move. That’s why we believe First Baptist is a double-portion church because we freely share the
resources God has given to us with others – not only in our church family, but throughout the community, as
well as nationally and internationally.
Words cannot adequately convey our appreciation for the support and steadfast efforts shown this year. It is
our esteemed privilege and honor to walk alongside dedicated disciples in this Christian journey, “Moving
Forward with a Double Portion.”
With the love of the Lord,
Pastor John and First Lady Trina Jenkins

at FBCG. Keynote speakers included NFL greats Ray
Lewis & Michael Irvin, along with ESPN broadcaster Chris
Broussard. With the theme “Battle Tested,” they, along
with the cornermen (aka coaches), candidly shared their
battle scars and strategies to help more than 2,500 men
realize their God-given potential. MVM was founded by

A DOUBLE PORTION
CHURCH-WIDE COLLABORATION
And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it
to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me’ (Matthew 25:40).
After more than nine months of planning and preparation, volunteers began to arrive at
6 a.m. on Nov. 16 for the FBCG Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway. When the event was over,
1,500 volunteers and 300 military personnel had helped distribute 4,500 bags of food.
“
It feels beautiful, it really
does. It’s a blessing because
so many people really need
this, especially at this time
of the year the way the
economy is. I appreciate it.
”

This clearly was “double portion” in action.
In previous years, only 200-300 volunteers could be utilized due to space limitations
at the Ministry Center. But armed with Pastor Jenkins’ collaboration initiative and his
desire for BIG impact in 2013, the Missions Ministry developed a plan to meet the needs
of more people in record time.
The event was shifted to the Empowerment Center, a warehouse-size facility owned
by FBCG. That allowed Missions to recruit many more volunteers with representatives
from 40-plus FBCG ministries pitching in. The spacious venue also enabled recipients to
receive more than a Thanksgiving basket. Not only were their wait times slashed to less
than 10 minutes in most cases, they were offered other services (health screenings, play
areas for children, prayer rooms) to meet their spiritual, temporal and physical needs.

“
I’m excited, I’m grateful, I’m thankful
and I’m looking forward to this
wonderful meal. Thanks to First Baptist
Church of Glenarden we can have a
blessed holiday.
”
– a recipient
The event went off without a hitch, due to the long hours
of advance work and God’s grace.
Missions shared its vision with other ministries and
departments and continued to make improvements
along the way – including the key decision in September
to move the event. The community was notified of the
giveaway in early October and other organizations were
invited to collaborate with FBCG.
The planning never stopped, as Missions continued to
work closely with operations managers, department
heads and community partners. All parties
communicated effectively and showed flexibility in
coming together to serve God’s people with a double
portion! At the end of the day-long outreach, the 4,500
beneficiaries weren’t the only ones blessed. Everyone
who contributed their time and resources were proud to
be a part of this worthwhile event.

MINISTRIES |
Reverend William S. Berkeley Jr., Department Head
The Children and Youth Ministries focused on moving young people forward through classes,
activities and events that were specifically geared to help them grow spiritually, mentally,
emotionally and relationally. God poured out a double portion on the Children and Youth
Ministries as they shared their time, talents and gifts to build up young people.

2 Kings 2:9. In keeping with the 2013 church
theme, the 16/32 Movement represents the story
of the mentor Elijah performing 16 miracles to
his protégé Elisha’s 32.

EDUCATION &
TRAINING
MINISTRIES |
Reverend Esther L. Gordon, Department Head
The Education and Training Ministries were on a mission to move the First Baptist family
forward through information, training and support. Whether studying the Word of God, focusing
on health and wellness, discovering careers, furthering education or simply dealing with life
issues, these ministries provided a double portion of information to equip the saints.

FAMILY LIFE
MINISTRIES |
First Lady Trina Jenkins, Department Head
Every community is fueled by how strong the family unit functions. Armed with this knowledge,
Family Life Ministries used the Word of God to “lift up a standard” for families and how they
should function. Through instruction, accountability and love, families moved forward this year

The PRAISE (Providing Resources and Instruction to Individuals with Special Needs
to Encourage Spiritual Development) Ministry changed its name to the Special Needs
Ministry. This ministry developed an evangelism arm to share the gospel in a way that
accommodates individuals of all ages with special needs. Many responded to these efforts,
accepted Christ and followed the decision with baptism.
The number of teams offered by the Sports Ministry increased to nine. The ministry hosted
its annual basketball tournament, titled “Game Changer Tournament,” and attracted 60 teams
from around the area. Additionally, a soccer program was added that is headed by a coach from

Ministry also collaborated with FBCG’s Sports Ministry, Junior Ushers, Brothers in
Discipleship and the correctional officers from Upper Marlboro Jail to host a basketball game
at the Cheltenham Youth Facility. The ministry provided hot dogs, popcorn, cake and drinks. The boys were ministered to through fellowship and prayer.

New core training has been adopted for the Domestic Missions and Global Missions
ministries. All who embark on missions trips are being taught from the tried and true lessons

made with First Baptist’s three full-time missionaries serving in Burkina Faso and Ukraine.
Care packages were also sent to them on a regular basis.

MUSIC & ART
MINISTRIES |
Minister Stephen Hurd, Department Head
The Music & Arts Ministries encouraged souls and reminded believers of God’s faithfulness and
love through song, dance, drama, banners and other visual mediums. Diligently serving during
Sunday worship services, Tuesday Bible study, special events, concerts, church-wide activities
and more, the visual act of worship set the atmosphere for God to send a double portion of His
anointing and favor.
Always eager to serve, several members
from the Banner, Liturgical Dance,
Praise Team and various choirs
accompanied Pastor Jenkins to engagements
at other churches throughout the year.
The Art and Puppet ministries were newly
added to the department this year and
have continued to share their gifts and
talents with the FBCG family. The Art
Ministry designed ads to help various
ministries publicize meetings and events.
Meanwhile, the Puppet Ministry used
the gift of puppetry to teach Sunday School
lessons to children between the ages of
2 and 7. They also received the Bronze
Award at the Creative Ministry Regional
Festival in Laurel, Md., for their “blacklight” performance to “Prayers of the
Righteous.” One of the advanced puppeteers
traveled to Okinawa, Japan to minister to
150 local school children. Meanwhile, the
Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway performance
culminated in an encore performance.
To stay current on ways to create an
atmosphere of worship through dance, the
Liturgical Dance Ministry attended
the Dallas Black Liturgical Dance Workshop.
The ministry ushered in the presence of
God when it partnered with the Women’s
Ministry for its “God’s Leading Ladies Day:
A Summer Chic All-White Affair,” and the
Dorcas Ministry for the Annual Seasoned
Citizens Banquet.
The Male Chorus regularly maintained
the grounds of Deaconness Naomi Grier’s

During a Singles Ministry fellowship, the Drama
Ministry presented “Resisting Temptation,” a series of
scenes highlighting real-life situations where people
had to choose between their flesh or following Christ.
The Drama Ministry created a theatrical
lounge called “Prelude” that was a great
success. It led to invitations from several
ministries to share the gospel through
drama, including at Life Builders’ Saturday
Night Live and a Singles Ministry fellowship.
In the spirit of collaboration, various ministry
members participated in the Prince George’s
County Christmas in April outreach. In
addition, the Northern Virginia Juvenile

The year 2013 culminated for the Music &
Arts Ministries with the 5th annual “The
Uncut Coming of Christ,” a Christmas
dramatization-musical comprised of
150 cast and production crew that took
attendees on a whimsical journey leading up
to the greatest love story ever told - the birth
of Christ! Nearly 13,000 people packed out
the Worship Center for three performances
featuring gospel recording artists Tasha
Cobbs, Isaac Carree, Anaysha FigueroaCooper and a cameo appearance by Pastor
Keith Battle of Zion Church. Viewers also
got a taste of ancient Bethlehem at our preshow marketplace, featuring live animals!
This musical celebration has become a
family tradition for people throughout the
Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
Pastor Keith Battle made a cameo appearance as the

Gospel legends Shirley Caesar and Bishop Paul

2013 SMI
ANNUAL REPORT |
Minister Cynthia Terry, President
SHABACH! Ministries, Inc. celebrated its 17th year of meeting the needs of education and
community services in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
Education Division highlights start with the
SHABACH! Christian Learning Center.
In June, the Learning Center graduated
46 soaring eagles. At capacity, with 121
students, the SCLC opened a new classroom
in the fall of 2013.
SHABACH! Christian Academy had great
exploits in the 2013 school year. Some of the
highlights include:
• K-6th grade averaged 1.3 years
ABOVE grade level on standardized
tests.
44
• K-5th grade students averaged
94.2 percent for their conduct,
which is excellent.
• Kindergarteners averaged in the
95th percentile in reading, the 82nd
percentile in math and the 88th
percentile on the complete battery
of tests they took in the spring.
• All other grade levels scored
above the national average on the
complete battery of tests also taken
in the spring.
• 93 percent of 3rd through 6th grade
maintained a 3.0 GPA or better for
the year.

averaged a GPA of 3.5 or higher
for the year, and earned academic
excellence awards as a result.
• 25 of the 5th and 6th graders

In the fall, the EEC had the successful launch of the “Mobile
Mega Market” program, which served more than 500 individuals,
including low-income, disabled and veteran residents.
In 2013 the EEC served more than 26,000 families, which is
equivalent to a total of 92,000 men, women and children. Due to
the economy and high unemployment, 54,570 bags of groceries (a
54 percent increase from 2012) were given to the community. The
EEC also gave 573 coats to community organizations such as Family

The community support that SMI provides would be impossible
without the generous contributions of partners. Making that possible
was a major Bed, Bath and Beyond market-value donation worth
$118,701.37. Other donations of products and produce totaled
$112,125, which included $50,000 worth of food from Wegmans,
more than 302,000 pounds of produce from various farms and
organizations, and several thousand boxes of diapers from the
Diaper Bank.
Many volunteers also donated their time, with a cash value of
$132,732 for more than 11,061 hours of work.
The Empowerment Center was awarded the 500,000th diaper from the Diaper Bank, in
celebration of their second anniversary.
