From The Rabbi
At the end of May we installed the next
cycle of leaders at Temple Beth Ami.
The annual ritual of the Annual General
Meeting, while secular in origination, is
in reality a holy moment.
For those of us involved with the
preparation of programs and services,
we have the opportunity to reflect on the
previous year, concentrate on our current state of affairs and
create a vision of tomorrow. Our congregation continues to
grow, and our programming improves dramatically to meet
these needs.
This year we are committing as a congregation to reaching
out, as well as reaching in. We realize there are literally
thousands of Jews in the Santa Clarita Valley who remain
unaffiliated. We need your help in bringing people in. We
need to be placed in contact with them, so you can help by
making sure that people you meet are on our mailing and
e-mail list.
I want to thank everyone who has participated and lent their
energy to making this a wonderful community, and
congratulate those taking on the mantle of leadership.
Temple Beth Ami’s strength has been made possible through
the hard work of so many of our congregants, board members, volunteers, parents and students. The road ahead is
challenging and exciting, but with all of our continued
commitment, we will assuredly have much to be proud of this
time next year as well!
Have a wonderful summer,
Rabbi Mark Blazer
SHAVUOT CELEBRATIONS
Join us as we commemorate the anniversary
of the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people at

We also want to make sure that everyone already part of the
Temple Beth Ami family is connected, especially through our

Tuesday, June 3
7:00 pm | at Temple Beth Ami
The topic for the evening's joint study session led by
Rabbi Mark Blazer and Rabbi Ron Hauss will be
"What Jews Believe - Is There Such a Thing as a Jewish
Dogma?"
This month you should be proud, as the tradition of dynamic
leaders at TBA continues. With the next generation of
trustees, supported by those who have been involved since
the beginning, TBA is an influential force in Santa Clarita and
indeed throughout Southern California.

From The Cantor
I need to take this opportunity to thank all
of you here at Temple Beth Ami so much
for your outpouring of love and support at
this very difficult time.
He entertained over there in the “Comedy Caravan” and
upon his return, began doing small theater in Philadelphia.
He played the “girl’s father” in the first production of “The
Fantasticks” outside of New York.
My father, Irving Isadore “Nails” “Itzy”
“Marv” Ellis was born on Sunday, March
4, 1923.To put it in perspective, at this
tim e, the 68 t h United States
Congress was meeting in Washington, D.C. during the last
months of Warren G. Harding's presidency, and the first
years of his successor, Calvin Coolidge.
He could tell jokes and could speak in dialects that only Sid
Caesar could rival. He spoke fluent Yiddish and would sing
and tell jokes in Yiddish as easily as in English.
He was born to Max from Russia and Jennie from Romania.
He was second of three brothers, Nathan (Spike) and
Charles (Tack). All three brothers slept in the same bed until
Irving went into the army. They lived in tough neighborhoods
in Philadelphia, which is why they had those “tough guy”
nicknames.
He was a “barrel man” and ran Ellis Cooperage along with
his father and brothers.
Three “L’s” best describe my dad. Light, Laughter and Love.
People loved him and he loved people. He was an amazing
spirit for 91 years and it was an honor and privilege to call
him “Dad.” I will truly miss him.
B’shalom,
Cantor Kenny Ellis
Being the middle child, my Dad was a little different. He was
the gentler and caring son, who was always there for his
parents even when he became an adult.
He loved big bands, going to the movies for a nickel, riding
the street car and going to the Earl Theater at 11th and
Market streets in Philadelphia The theater would showcase
the “World's Biggest Stars” like Eddie Cantor, Frank Sinatra,
Josephine Baker, and during the Big Band era, Benny
Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller and Duke Ellington,
just to name a few.
Special Musical Shabbat Themes
Save the date:
Friday, June 13th – Beatles & Father’s Day Shabbat
Service
He joined the Army in 1941 and was in the 310th Signal
Battalion decoding Morse Code and served in England,
France, Belgium and Holland. Until his very last day, told
wonderful stories of his experiences there.
Celebrate Life Cycle Events!
Whether it is a marriage, birth of a baby, graduation, or bar or bat mitzvah, you can honor your loved one’s
happy occasion by adding a leaf to the Tree of Life which sits on the back wall of our sanctuary.
Please contact either our administrator Catherine or our bookkeeper Ofra for more information.

Education
Shalom!
By now most of you have heard about the changes to the
Religious School program for next year. The staff and I are
going to be very busy this summer getting things ready for
your children. The Enrollment papers will be available on line
and at open houses. Please contact me by email this summer
with questions or concerns. I look forward to continuing to see
your children grow in their Jewish knowledge.
One terrific change is the addition of Music for our Hebrew
School. The students will learn some different melodies for
Shabbat Services and some Israeli Folk songs. The Jewish
music tradition is so varied and adds a wonderful depth to
prayer and simply being Jewish.
I strongly encourage all students to attend services this
summer and review their Hebrew whenever they
can. Religious school may be 9 months of the year, but being
Jewish is 24/7/365! There are several on-line resources to
keep Hebrew fresh in your mind:
For more, just Google: “Jewish Websites for Children.” Some
of them are for older students and cover current events for
Israel. Some of them offer information on where to buy
Judaica and Jewish themed books. Remember: when
looking at websites keep in mind that they are run by many
different organizations, from Orthodox to Humanist as well as
Christian organizations. The Israeli Tourist Bureau has a
website with pictures and information about Israel. Parents
should always know what their children are doing on line. Go
on-line with them! Learning together is wonderful.
Have a safe, happy, restful summer,
Judith Stolnitz
Education Director

Mitzvah Projects
Our daughter, Jaclyn Wosk, became a Bat Mitzvah on May 31, 2014. Jaclyn did a wonderful job reading her portion of the
Torah. We are so proud of her. She has a caring heart and is dedicated to what she believes in. Jaclyn has been helping

has organized a new toy drive and money collection. She has collected over 500 new toys and raised $100.00. For her
Mitzvah Project Jaclyn will be collecting new toys for CHLA through the month of July. There will be a collection box in the
Sanctuary. The new toys should not be wrapped with wrapping paper and are for ages 6 months to teens. Jaclyn is looking
forward to delivering toys that will bring smiles to the patients’ faces.
