-V % Q. EAST ORANGE .NJ PUSUC LISRAr.. JAST ORANGE, NEW 1987 TARTAN CLIFFORD J. SCOTT HIGH SCHO< **_, 12C) Renshaw Avenue £t Orange, New Jersey 07017 t 'OLUME XXXXVIII "** HERE WE GO AGAIN Here we go again back to the ole school yard. With friends and new acquaintances we stroll to the hallowed halls of CJS. Comparing schedules, seeing "long-lost friends", and getting lost in the two-leveled building, Scotties survive another first day of school. Energized from summer vacation, Scott students arrive at special homeroom their first time to find out, "What's happening!" They spend the remainder of the day struggling with new locker combinations and asking the question, "Do you have a 7:40 class?" On this day, one can find all freshmen wandering out of the orientation assembly with that dazed look in their eyes. One can also find guidance being overrun by students with schedule changes and the Class of 1987 proclaiming, "We are finally seniors!" f By the end of the day, Scotties are already counting down the 179 days left of school, and teachers are commiserating with each other in the teachers' lounge. Fortunately for students and teachers alike, this day only occurs once a year. However, soon everyone adjusts to their new schedule and that harried, confusing first day is soon forgotten. TOGETHERNESS Scott High is filled with togetherness. Togetherness here encompasses the total student life. It embodies caring and sharing as a family unit would. This family unit makes Scott unique as the faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and students work together toward that one ultimate goal — academic excellence. A PERSONAL TOUCH Walking through the corridors at night, all one sees are rows and rows of plain metaMockers. However, during the daytime four minute passing time between classes, as locker doors swing outward, it's amazing how quickly metal storage space comes to life, displaying portraits, posters, corkboard, photos, stuffed animals, and anything else which lends a touch of home. Decorating a locker is an art form unto itself. In the morning some students arrive carrying pin-ups of shapely men and women, pictures of musical groups, baby snapshots of a while ago, or photographs of their friends. These mementos are used for decorating lockers. During the day, just by opening one's locker door, a student can escape into a fantasy world. Locker decorating is a creative expression of a student's individualism. "Locker deco" can turn any dull inanimate metal locker into an all metal home away from home. 10 MUSIC FILLS THE AIR 1987 was a fantastic year for the Clifford J. Scott Marching Band. The Scotties participated in Salute to Israel, the Baltimore Harbor Festival, Washington D.C. Salute, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Memorial Day Parade, and the Heritage Day Parade. They won a total of five first place awards. Their success was due to the leadership of Band Director Mr. James Turkvan and Assistant Band Director Mr. James Gay. This year, for the first time, two capable Scott students led the marching and performing units. Drum Major Gregory Spry and Drum Majorette Chiwonesa Atkinson vibrantly guided the units through On Broadway, Go For It, Easy Lover, and All in All. The band and squads were impressive to watch as they performed their vivacious routines. Congratulations! 11 PREPARATION FOR THE BIG DAY PSAT and SAT'S are sets of letters that can cause rising blood pressures, bulging eyeballs, and bumping butterflies in the stomachs of Scott students. The spring of a student's junior year and the fall of the senior year have become synonymous with these tests. Many Scott students take preparatory classes before these dreaded tests. Listening to testing skills tapes, completing homework for review courses, memorizing word lists for tutors, and taking practice tests along with seminars early Saturday mornings at the high school have become second nature to a majority of students. Barron's SAT and PSAT Review Books have become a students' Bible. Scott students are prepared to fill in those little circles when the fateful testing days arrive. 12 SCOTTIE SPIRIT Walk through the halls of Scott High, sit in on an enthusiastic teacher's class, hear the rousing cheers from the robust cheerleaders, listen to the dedicated basketball and football fans, watch the choir or band perform and feel the confidence of academically inspired students! This is SCOTTIE SPIRIT! Scott students with positive direction behind them aim high to reach difficult goals. With dignity and spirit they meet the challenges of one day and are ready to tackle the obstacles facing them the next day. Each day with inspirational motivation Scotties strive for excellence. 14 15 THE BEGINNING We have just ended a time ot hard work, determination, and enduring education. A time of good and sad . . . And now leaving behind everything that we once had. We are about to leave the ones that are dear. Going out on our own leaves great fears. We shall dream about the old times and think about the new. Knowing that the times we have left will possibly vanish in a few . . . Just thinking about leaving, leaves pain in our hearts. But we all know we have to make a fresh start. The time of ending leaves us in sorrow. But we shall make a NEW BEGINNING ON A BRIGHT TOMORROW. *.-*,. **.> mm* m II* SCHOOL LIFE THE TARTAN PRESENTS THE CLASS OF 1987 S E N I O R S 18 Aclridn Abrams Kelly Anderson i i Kimberlv Albca Rhonda Alexander Stanley Ashle\ Chiwonesa Yvette Atkinson Sarda Ali a MUTT ' N ' )fchh ROW I: Shirrontl.i Swc-f! They are the official years of our "fiftieth anniversary." Clifford J. Scott High School's name belongs to a man well-remembered in East Orange, Dr. Clifford John Scott. Dr. Scott served as Superintendent of Schools from 1921 to his untimely death in 1936. He devoted his time primarily toward progressive improvements of the city's school system and the inauguration of a junior high school program. Dr. Scott proposed the plans for a new institution which would be located at the corners of Renshaw Avenue and North Clinton Street. This was the beginning of Clifford J. Scott High School. The cornerstone was laid in 1936. C.J. Scott High School officially opened on September 13, 1937 with eight hundred and fifty students comprised of eighth graders, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. On September 26, 1937, The New York Times published an article pertaining to the late superintendent and on October 15, the general public was invited to view the new building along with the unveiling of Dr. Scott's portrait which was painted by Edmund Nagrath, a New York artist. American flags saved to today were donated by patriotic and civic organizations. The same 1937 photograph was unveiled and re-dedicated on April 4, 1 987, the official C.J. Scott High School anniversary day. 88 DIDVOt The origin Soverel Fiel Williams Sni basketball; Football had a^n Hackettstov] Male students Ar. I've watched you grow up beautiful, proud, strong, intelligent and most importantly loved. I can remember hoping that this little girl of mine would accomplish all that I didn't and be all that I wasn't. Well, I have been blessed because you are all I was unable to be and more because it's you and not me. I love you and wish you God Speed. Don't ever be afraid of life.
