Kites have a universal fascination. After all, no one can resist the exhilaration of using the wind to defy gravity and make a man-made object fly. It is an interest that goes back thousands of years and kites today have developed into many forms and uses throughout the world. Of the many regional, traditional styles, perhaps the most popular in Malaysia today are the Wau Bulan, Wau Kucing, Wau Barat, Wau Jala Budi and Wau Merak. These kites are made with bamboo frames and are lavishly decorated with cut-paper and foil. Decorative motifs celebrate trees, twigs, leaves and blooming flowers as well as other aspects of nature such as birds, ducks, butterflies, and insects. The Moon Kite or Wau Bulan is richly decorated with colourful patterns of flowers and leaves. It has a bamboo frame, a tissue covering on which brightly Ornate decoration reflective of local motifs 3 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MEI 2015 coloured paper is cut and stuck on to make these kites so beautiful to look at. They are constructed to fly in a figure of eight path so as to make the normally attached hummer give a constant buzzing noise. It also has the status of being one of Malaysia's national symbols. As such, it featured on the reverse side of the Malaysian fifty-cent coin in 1989. Wau Kucing or Cat kite also has a hummer attached. Besides helping the farmer to doze off at night, the sound of the hummer was believed to frighten away evil spirits. Some even used the patterns of sound to forecast the following day's weather! Wau Jala Budi the Woman considerable is known Kite, as although imagination is required to see why, from its shape! The Leaf Kite or Wau Barat on the other hand is wider and does not generally have a hummer. Being painted rather than stuck with colored paper, the artists tend to be more creative and less bound to traditional guidelines with their designs. Additionally, artists who use Batik techniques are often used to do the decoration. Interestingly too, there must be some weight savings here, since these kites are able to stay up in lighter winds than the other designs. Since the winds are often lightest early in the day, this design is also called the Early Morning Kite or just Morning Kite. The Wau Merak or Peacock Subtle differences in these kites 4 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MEI 2015 Kite has a tail rather than a lower sail. This kite is local to the Johor state but is not readily accepted into official competitions outside Johor, perhaps because its origins go back to Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it is flown mainly by the Bugis people. This variation has a hummer like most of the others, but seven different sounds can be made from it due to the use of multiple strings and tuned to different pitches. It is usually flown at night to accentuate the effect of beautiful noises from above. The 'wau' is not only beautiful to look at but is also functional, riding the wind in a figure-of eight path 5 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MEI 2015 FEATURE Pesta Bunga Pulau Pinang 2015 Oleh : Zakwan Zainal B agi pencinta flora, anda lepaskan peluang dan datanglah berpeluang melihat beramai-ramai untuk menikmati pelbagai jenis bunga dari keindahan flora di Pesta Bunga ratusan spesies dan hibrid yang akan dipamerkan di Taman Botani Pulau Pinang sempena Pesta Bunga Pulau Pinang 2015. A 70-metrehigh, brilliant-white needle, it was erected to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the city's founding and Argentina’s independence from Spain. Another must-visit icon of this city is Argentinian writer Borges's favoured hang-out, Café Tortoni in the city centre. It is the city’s oldest café, opened since 1858 and dimly lit, even at noon, with stone-tiled floors, dark panelling, marble-topped tables and oxblood leather upholstery. Nowadays, tourists flock through taking photos along with the mandatory cup of coffee and cake, but there are plenty of historic bars around town – such as El Federal in San Telmo – that flaunt the same taste of drama. The Plaza de Mayo was the scene of many historic moments in the country’s history. At the square’s eastern limit is the fluorescent-pink Casa Rosada, the presidential palace. Evita Perón regaled thousands from its balcony and Diego Maradona hoisted the World Cup here. The exclusive Recoleta district hosts the Recoleta Cemetery ,Buenos Aires’ great necropolis, where former presidents, military generals and, most famously, Evita, lie buried in grandiose mausoleums. The intriguing site is a maze of narrow passageways lined with crumbling marble statuary in architectural styles from art nouveau to neo-Gothic. Walk through the alleys to discover cherubs in stone relief, stained-glass windows edged with cobwebs, marble angels and bittersweet poetry etched into granite. On weekends, an artisans’ flea market dominates the park. Collectors, art aficionados and souvenir hunters will find plenty of self-made jewelry utilizing Argentina’s national gemstone, the Inca del Rosa, and handicrafts here.
