J
oin Pria Viswalingam as he considers
2007
whether we are now bogged down in
a mire of meaningless self-indulgence,
and whether we do really need iPods, plasma screen
TVs, Brazilian waxes and self-navigating 4WDs to
achieve happiness. Pria also reflects on how Western
modern life was viewed by the East when he was
growing up in Asia, and how this has changed over
the last several decades, by focusing on the elements
of money, sex, democracy, education, family and God.

EPISODE 1 - MONEY: Part one considers the
legacy of the 1980’s belief that greed is good, and
observes that while the rich are getting richer,
the poor are becoming the ‘working poor’ and
the West’s heaving middle-class is sinking into a
quicksand of mortgages, school fees and credit.
EPISODE 2 - SEX: In part two Pria reflects on how
sex-saturated our modern culture is. EPISODE 3
- DEMOCRACY: In this episode, Pria asks whether
we really do live in a democracy anymore.

considers the undervaluing of a broad ‘western’
education in modern Australia and the narrow

it. EPISODE 5 - FAMILY: In this episode, Pria
discusses family and looks at why Australians are
marrying less, breaking up more, having fewer kids
and why divorce and suicide are rife in Australia.
EPISODE 6 - GOD: Pria looks at the shallowness
and permissiveness of modern society.

This program transports its
audience to the world of 31 year
old Jabe Babe, a tall girl with a
tall story. Jabe measures 6ft
2inches (188cm), works as a dominatrix and lives
on the margins, defying society’s expectations of
the ‘normal’ ‘feminine’ body and sexuality. Jabe
Babe also has a life threatening genetic condition
called Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder which affects one
in three thousand people. The film explores her early experiences of living
with her schizophrenic mother, before moving through many families in
the foster care system. This hybrid documentary film, merging fiction and
non-fiction forms, inhabits the heightened ‘technicolour’ world of the tall
woman, the outsider, to provoke questions on society’s desire for sexual,
visual, and genetic conformity. **MULTI AWARD WINNER**

My Deaf World
NEW
Bethany Rose and Scott
2007
Masterson are schoolmates, a
pair of energetic and charming
teenagers who share three things - adolescence,
school, and deafness. We (the hearing) might
see deafness as a disability to be cured. But to
Bethany and Scott, their deaf world is a rich culture
of human possibility, with its own language, rules,
challenges and inspirations. Welcome 2 My Deaf World follows Bethany
and Scott through the last few months of their schooling at the Victorian
College for the Deaf (VCD), Australia’s first school for deaf kids, and now
the only school that teaches in sign language from Prep to Year 12. With
dreams of creative, sporting and academic success, both teenagers appear
eager to move beyond their sheltered lives and enter the wider world. This
documentary follows two teenagers on the edge of change, but it is also
a story about what it means to be deaf in contemporary Australia. It is an
exploration of a culture with its own language and history.

SELLER
Structure. This revealing series
provides an Australian perspective on the
social structures that are propelling us into
a future which we may not be ready to endorse. The series
contemplates the influences that have made us what we
are and asks if we could or should do it differently. Most
Australians strenuously resist the idea of class distinction,
yet would be naive to believe that Australia does not run
along wealth and/or power-driven hierarchical lines.

No Worries
An introduction which identifies an Australian
style of doing business and how it came about.
An agricultural and resource-based economy
protected by tariffs and a regulated financial
market had bred a she’ll be right attitude in
Australian business and boardrooms. With
deregulation, Australian corporations have
responded by becoming ‘fitter’.
The 51st State
Delves into what defines Australian workers attitudes and those that
pervade the various levels of management. It also challenges the concept
of cultural/business cringe, particularly in relation to America, highlighting
the example of the Holden motor company.
The Club
This episode investigates the culture which exists at the highest levels
of management. While the shop floor and middle management has gone
through rigorous change, the boardrooms of Australia are still undiluted
and languishing in tradition. Australia’s cultural diversity appears not to be
reflected in Australian boardrooms, a serious problem if we are to globalise.
Why do Australian individuals succeed overseas but not companies.

Ann McGregor of the Southern Cross Group in London. Both are Australians
taking positive steps to nurture connections between Australians both
abroad and at home, if Australia is to strengthen its position in the global
business environment.
Happiness Inc
This episode talks to the Australian business people who return to their home
country, looking at the influence of children and lifestyle considerations on
such decisions. It also challenges the notion of the ‘sea-changer’ as Pria
discovers business people earning ‘Sydney money’ in locations such as
Noosa. They’re doing the same work and earning the same money - but
doing it in idyllic locations.

The Brotherhood
Lachlan McCulloch was a real life “Stinger” - in turn a yuppie drug dealer
who bought drugs from one of the country’s most dangerous crime families,
and a mumbling vagrant who went unnoticed in the street - but who
noticed everything. McCulloch was one of the most successful undercover
police officers Australia has seen. In his 16-year career he won many

do: he became a whistleblower, using all his nerve and skill to trap a fellow

the longest-running and most glamorous event in Australia’s history
and was second only to sports events in Australian culture. The history
of the Quest mirrors developments in Australia in attitudes to celebrity,
immigration, philanthropy, the monarchy, race, sexuality, the economy
and national identity. Fashion: The fashion designs of Dinnegan, Isogawa,
Janks, Kalivas, and many more, can be seen on the catwalks of Europe
and on the backs of film stars and celebrities throughout the world. These
designers are all first or second generation Australians and in many cases
their cultural heritage is reflected in their designs. In less than 15 years,
Australia has established itself in the world of fashion with a name for
unique design.

This moving account traces the story of abuse in
Scottish orphanages by Catholic nuns. Following
the newspaper release of the abuse, a class
action formed in the late 1990’s and quickly
escalated to represent 450 people. Claims are
for abuse that spread from the 1920s to late
70s, and charges the nuns with degrading and
inhumane punishment. Cath Yeomans, now living
in Australia, is the oldest claimant. She and her
sisters spent ten years in the ‘care’ of the Sisters of Nazareth in Glasgow.
This story provides a framework for other peoples’ stories, as well as wider
political issues and questions.

were transformed from fishermen into nuclear
technicians and Green Peace activists sailed a

testing. This film also shows how a tiny group of Tahitian radicals set up
the world’s only anti-nuclear resistance cell and how some former test
workers from France and Tahiti now suffer from cancers that many believe
are linked to fall-out from the tests. It includes footage of various tests
conducted over the period and of protests and actions carried out by
Greenpeace (including the attack on its flagship the Rainbow Warrior) and
other groups opposed to the tests.

died in the massive American bombing campaign
of which the atomic bombing was only a part. It
is only recently that the Japanese themselves

by the forced reconstruction at the price of memory and denial and under

Crime of Crimes - Part 1
Enemy / Land
Rather than being a grim litany of disaster, this
series analyses the social, political and historical
conditions that make ethnic cleansing possible. It
begins with the persecution of the Jews throughout
history. It continues by looking at colonisers in
North America, Australia and South Africa who
justified brutal expansion in the name of ‘civilising’
the native peoples: then considers ethnic cleansing
of political ends. The episode ‘Land’ focuses on the colonisers, who turned
land into property, clearing the indigenous people, establishing Europeans
as the new owners. This ‘clear and settle’ policy was first tried out by the
English in Ireland but was also used later in North America and Australia
establishing Europeans as the new owners.

Nation / Vengeance
The episode ‘Nation’ looks at Europe at the end of
the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Centuries
when the great empires were crumbling and the
peoples of Europe turned to nationhood to instil
security and a sense of belonging. In Turkey, the
reign of the tyrannical sultans was swept away,
and replaced in 1908 by a group known as the
Young Turks, a group of military men who no longer
saw the empire as a priority. The episode ‘Vengeance’ looks at genocides in
the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda. These campaigns of mass
murder were conducted by people who felt that they were part of a group
that had suffered in the past, and wanted to right the wrongs of history.
In the history of genocide, the perpetrators have always needed a powerful
and convincing story to enable them to kill and justify their actions.

Australia’s first living history series is a blend of historical discovery, social
jeopardy, adventure challenge, and experiential learning as pampered 21st
Century ‘pioneers’ attempt to prove they’re tough enough to survive their
historical ordeal. Against this backdrop, the series explores the gripping
story of the first settlement’s brutal, often bloody conflict between races
(Aboriginal, Irish and English), classes (convicts, free settlers and military)
and men and women. A British and Irish family are shipped to the far side
of the world to join an Australian family. They enter an isolated world, cut
off from civilisation in almost every respect. They have to cope with the
lack of creature comforts as well as the gruelling chores of daily life. How
did the three European families, their volunteer convicts and Aboriginal
people come together to face the challenges of early European settlement
on the frontier?

his founding, with eleven others, of the Congress of the Chinese Communist
Party in 1921; the rule of Chiang Kaishek’s Nationalists and the Long
March, the epic retreat of Mao’s Red Army in 1934. In 1937 the Japanese
invasion of China forced the Nationalists into a patriotic alliance with the
Red Army. After the Japanese defeat, the Nationalist Army turned on the
Communists, but the Red Army proved to be stronger. Chiang Kaishek fled

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
In the early years of the People’s Republic, Chinese policy followed an
orthodox Stalinist path but diverged from the Soviet model and took on a
new, specifically Maoist quality after Stalin’s death. Mao initiated a series
of political movements and believed that creating people’s communes
would bring about an economic upsurge and enable China to catch up
with industrialised countries like England, France and America. However,
the venture went badly wrong and became one of the biggest disasters in
modern Chinese history. A serious famine set in and 20 million Chinese
died of starvation.

Galileo’s Battle for
the Heavens
This documentary program tells the story of
the Montagnard hill tribes of Vietnam’s central
highlands - loyal allies to the American forces
during the Vietnam conflict who are now fighting
for their existence, their culture, and their land.
During the Vietnam War thousands of Montagnard
hill tribesmen were recruited by the CIA and Special
Forces to fight the communists in exchange for US
promises of support and protection. Tragically,
those loyal US allies would be abandoned in 1975 to be brutally persecuted
by the vengeful communists. It was in 1992 however, when the last
resistance group of Montagnards, who were still fighting the Vietnam War,
would surrender. Like ghosts they stepped out of the jungle - 17 years after
America left Vietnam.

Afghanistan. The UN and aid agencies do not work

Carmela decides to travel back to Oruzgon Province independently of the
US Marines and Afghan militia. She is reported “missing” in early July.
The source of reports of an abandoned vehicle and Taliban abduction of
a Western woman has never been uncovered. She is the only independent
witness to document US operational areas in Afghanistan. The US Marines

From azure Mediterranean
shores to Troglodyte cave-homes; Chador-clad
women to bikini wearing babes - Tunisia is an
ancient country with wildly contrasting lifestyles
and attitudes. History aside, there’s also a unique
and very contemporary blend of cultural influences
in Tunisia to explore. Hedi lives on the Gulf of Tunis
in Sidi Bou Said - a picturesque village famous for
its whitewashed-blue-trimmed buildings. Five
hundred kilometres south of Tunis, around Matmata and Tataouine, Pria
investigates the domain of the Berbers.
Singapore is a dynamic and industrious island that is clean and safe with
great food and eclectic shopping. It’s also perceived as being somewhat
sterile and governed by strict rules. This episode goes well beyond those
well-worn notions by spending time with some of the ordinary folk who
make up Singapore and some of the eloquent elite who explain the thinking
of modern day Singaporeans.

In one of the beautiful rural areas of southern China we meet a family who
make their living by fishing - though not in the conventional way. Here they
use cormorants that are trained when young to dive off rafts to catch fish their throats are tied so they can’t swallow. Parents worry about the future
for their children as the fish numbers are depleting and other options for a
livelihood are limited.

Viruses, those invisible micro-organisms capable
of causing fearful diseases in humans, for the most
part remain an enigma for modern science. Able to
mutate, to adapt, to use host cell mechanisms to
reproduce themselves with astounding rapidity,
unpredictable, viruses sometimes seem to have
presented humanity with a veritable challenge.
More worrying still than the viruses themselves are
the research programs for bacteriological weapons
using viruses. Yet, although a virus may be synonymous with disease, it
can be positive and beneficial in certain cases, and even an effective agent
in the battle against disease, notably cancer. A few examples illustrating
the new paths being explored at present in virology, and that could lead us
to reconsider our perceptions of viruses.

NEW
2007
his four-part documentary
series attempts to cast
more light on the world’s best-selling book,
by analysing its history and the archaeological
evidence for the Old Testament. Based on the
2002 book The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology’s
New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin
of Its Sacred Text by Prof. Israel Finkelstein
of Tel Aviv University and Neil Silberman of
the Ename Centre of Public Archaeology in
Belgium, this series brings together scientific
findings as well as archaeological discoveries
to try and cast light on whether certain aspects
of biblical history are true. 2006. Set of 4
- 4x60. DVD SET 6SBBE
This episode returns to the history
of the Israelite nation as recorded
in the Bible. Moses entrusts the
conquest of Canaan to Joshua, who
led Israel into battle. At the time of
a thunder storm, the tribes of Israel
take possession of Canaan - the
‘Promised Land’ - and settle there.
The archaeological investigation
in this episode contradicts the biblical account. This third
episode then moves to King David and his son Solomon,
asking the question, ‘What do we know of them?’ And what
do we know of the two Kingdoms of Israel that were located
in Canaan: Israel of the north, rich and powerful; and
Judah of the south, small and impoverished? How does the
tension between these two brother kingdoms impact upon
the drafting of some of the books of the Old Testament?
DVD - 6SBBE3
The Patriarchs
Day breaks upon the land of
Cannan, a land where, according to
the Bible, the patriarchs Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob lived. In this
episode, it is in Megiddo and at the
archaeological sites of the Levant
that the investigation starts. How
has archaeology played a role in the
grand narratives of the Bible? What
can it tell us today about Abraham, his son and grand-son?
Did they exist and if so, when? Why did the authors of the
account in Genesis write it in this way?

The Book
The investigation continues by
focusing on who put the biblical
texts into writing. Who were the
Israelites of the Old Testament
times? How did they appear in
the area? What can we know of
what characterises these ancient
Israelites, their habits and their
beliefs? This episode also looks at
the fifth book of the Bible, Deuteronomy, as well as the fall
of Judah and the exile of the Israelites in Babylon.

The Exodus
The archaeological and historical
investigation continues in Egypt
where, according to the biblical
text, the descendents of Abraham
were already installed, including
the leaders Joseph and Moses.
Moses liberates the Hebrews from
slavery before leading them out
of Egypt - called the Exodus - and
towards the ‘Promised Land’. This
episode of the series attempts to investigate if this event
in the Old Testament really happened. When and why was
Exodus written? What do we know of the kingdom of Judah
and King Josiah?

rt:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century
is the only series to focus exclusively on contemporary
art and the people who create it. Like the great biennial
art exhibitions that regularly showcase current artistic
activity, Art:21 returns to profile working artists who
build our living culture with each painting, sculpture,
photograph or installation that they create. 2006. Set of
4 - 4x60. DVD SET 6SBART30
This final episode explores the ways in which
contemporary artists use irony, goofiness, satire
and sarcasm. The four artists profiled in this
program - Eleanor Antin, Raymond Pettibon,
Elizabeth Murray and Walton Ford - have been
influenced by the history of humour and comedy,
including vaudeville, cartoons, and comic books.
Working in a variety of media, including drawing,
painting, performance, photography, and print
making, their artwork’s reveal how humour and satire can stimulate
laughter as well as serve as a vehicle to explore serious subjects, such
as feminism, the natural environment, the excesses of consumer culture,
social injustice and war.
DVD - 6SBUSA4
The element of time is always present in our
interaction with works of art, whether we sit to
contemplate a painting for a few moments, stroll
past a sculpture, or watch a video piece for its
entire duration or cycle. Some works of art are
time-based in that the viewer must experience
them through the passage of time, as with
music, while others refer to time through links
or references to art history, our collective human
history, or the timelessness of nature. This episode features work by Martin
Puryear, Paul Pfeiffer, Vija Celmins and Tim Hawkinson.

Humour
THE ARTS
S
Thoughts and responses to themes of loss and
desire surface in many areas of our lives, from the
philosophical to the emotional. Specific works of
art cause us to contemplate issues such as war
and peace; the loss of community and the desire
for connection; the age-old human longing for
perfection, whether in the form of games or in the
universe as we understand it through science and
myth; and questions about the nature of beauty.
The artists featured in this program are Collier Schorr, Gabriel Orozco and
Janine Antoni.

Paris Dreaming
In May 2006 in Paris, President Chirac opened the
COMING
world’s first museum to acknowledge the inherent

artistic value of indigenous art works. The design of
the museum and its ceilings, floors and facades have
drawn heavily on the work of contemporary Australian
Aboriginal artists. For the first time what used to be referred to as primitive
art, works from Oceania, Asia, Africa and the America’s found mostly until
now in dusty natural history museums will now be given an ultra modern
home in the Museum of Primary Art on the Seine adjacent to the Eiffel
Tower. Paris Dreaming marks this significant milestone in the evolution of
western attitudes to indigenous civilisations.

Syllable to Sound
In an age dominated by flashy distractions the written
word may seem tired, flat and inaccessible; this film COMING
2007
seeks to bring words to life by having fine actors read
a series of powerful poems and to find the spirit of the
poems in their voices and in their faces. Two poems by
Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen from the Great War begin the program.
The centrepiece is Anna Ahkmatova’s “Requiem” and the final reflection
of the film consists of an extract from a poem by Auschwitz survivor Primo
Levi.

While colour is a child of science and physics, it triggers
COMING
within us a host of emotional, intuitive and intellectual
2007
responses – deeply rooted within ourselves and our
culture. Colour is everywhere. In landscapes, animals,
fashion, painting, movies, food - everything resonates
with the language of colours. Early in our lives, we come to accept colours
as an integral part of our perception; our interpretation; our existence. In
this three part series, we go on a global journey that explores how we view
colour, make colour and interpret colour. We aim to answer the questions
that puzzle all of us. Why is the sky blue? Why do leaves turn yellow in
autumn? From the iridescence of a butterfly’s wings to a hologram on a
credit card, from ancient ochre to a fashion show, from primitive to modern,
World of Colours will be spectacular, absorbing and ground breaking.
