The Habits of New Norcia
The Benedictine Monastery of New Norcia, the only
monastic town in Australia, was until 1973 New
Norcia Mission - home to generations of Aboriginal

This moving account traces the story of abuse in
Scottish orphanages by Catholic nuns. Following
the newspaper release of the abuse, a class
action formed in the late 1990’s and quickly
escalated to represent 450 people. Claims are
for abuse that spread from the 1920s to late
70s, and charges the nuns with degrading and
inhumane punishment. Cath Yeomans, now living
in Australia, is the oldest claimant. She and her
sisters spent ten years in the ‘care’ of the Sisters of Nazareth in Glasgow.
This story provides a framework for other peoples’ stories, as well as wider
political issues and questions.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
In the early years of the People’s Republic, Chinese policy followed an
orthodox Stalinist path but diverged from the Soviet model and took on a
new, specifically Maoist quality after Stalin’s death. Mao initiated a series
of political movements and believed that creating people’s communes
would bring about an economic upsurge and enable China to catch up
with industrialised countries like England, France and America. However,
the venture went badly wrong and became one of the biggest disasters in
modern Chinese history. A serious famine set in and 20 million Chinese
died of starvation.

Mao Zedong expressed his support and students around the nation became
Chairman Mao’s Red Guards. Mao called for the destruction of the old
world in order to construct a new socialist world - the Cultural Revolution
had begun. It is claimed that at the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976,
over a million people died due to violence against them.

Union after his plot against Mao fails but his plane crashes in Mongolia. In

before a large Party gathering and in January 1976 Premier Zhou Enlai dies.
The whole nation is thrown into mourning over his early death. In July,
northern China is struck by a massive earthquake which kills a quarter of a
million people and on 9 September 1976, Mao Zedong passes away.

This documentary program tells the story of
the Montagnard hill tribes of Vietnam’s central
highlands - loyal allies to the American forces
during the Vietnam conflict who are now fighting
for their existence, their culture, and their land.
During the Vietnam War thousands of Montagnard
hill tribesmen were recruited by the CIA and Special
Forces to fight the communists in exchange for US
promises of support and protection. Tragically,
those loyal US allies would be abandoned in 1975 to be brutally persecuted
by the vengeful communists. It was in 1992 however, when the last
resistance group of Montagnards, who were still fighting the Vietnam War,
would surrender. Like ghosts they stepped out of the jungle - 17 years after
America left Vietnam.

Gleeson was born in the northern Sydney suburb
of Hornsby in November 1915. He studied art and
where his first surrealist painting City on a Tongue
was included in a student exhibition in 1938. He has
exhibited regularly since 1939, although for a while

as much as painting. Gleeson’s paintings begin as
a series of rough sketches, or, as he says “scrappy
ideas” that eventually lead to what is the jumping off point for a painting. His

This final episode explores the ways in which
contemporary artists use irony, goofiness, satire
and sarcasm. The four artists profiled in this
program - Eleanor Antin, Raymond Pettibon,
Elizabeth Murray and Walton Ford - have been
influenced by the history of humour and comedy,
including vaudeville, cartoons, and comic books.
Working in a variety of media, including drawing,
painting, performance, photography, and print
making, their artwork’s reveal how humour and satire can stimulate
laughter as well as serve as a vehicle to explore serious subjects, such
as feminism, the natural environment, the excesses of consumer culture,
social injustice and war.

The element of time is always present in our
interaction with works of art, whether we sit to
contemplate a painting for a few moments, stroll
past a sculpture, or watch a video piece for its
entire duration or cycle. Some works of art are
time-based in that the viewer must experience
them through the passage of time, as with
music, while others refer to time through links
or references to art history, our collective human
history, or the timelessness of nature. This episode features work by Martin
Puryear, Paul Pfeiffer, Vija Celmins and Tim Hawkinson.

Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen from the Great War begin the program.
The centrepiece is Anna Ahkmatova’s “Requiem” and the final reflection
of the film consists of an extract from a poem by Auschwitz survivor Primo
Levi.
