Param Gill’s Filmmaking Journey
and Award-Winning Comedy
Filmmaker Param Gill
Eddie Griffin as Fumnanya
is the CEO of FlickBag,
a film production and
distribution company
based in Silicon Valley;
Beverly Hills, California;
and Mumbai, India.
His inspiration for his art comes from
the people around him – not necessarily
family and friends, but interactions with
others. The life tales from the people he
meets are the catalyst for his own storytelling like his first film, Shell Shocked
Hope. After listening to one veteran’s
story, Param felt it was a unique perspective on war that needed to be told, so
he produced and directed the short. The
film screened in downtown Modesto to
a packed theater filled with movie-goers
and war veterans. He was shocked by
how fifteen minutes of moving images
could change a room full of people
and stir such emotions. His journey
into filmmaking had begun, including
award-winning films like the Bollywood
feature DOA: Death of Amar that won the
Audience Choice Award and screened as
part of the Director’s Showcase segment
at San Francisco Global Movie Fest, as
well as Hotel Hollywood, Rockin Meera,
and Politics of Love.
For his recent feature film, Param
wanted to remake a Slovenian fairy tale
and turned to InkTip screenwriter John
Buchanan. Previously, Param discovered John on InkTip when he acquired
his script The Last American Taboo. He
hired John to write Going to America.
“[It became] a new film thanks to the
efforts put in by John,” Param said. “He
understands it takes a while to get projects underway and released. We have a
very strong relationship.”
Although Param is credited as one of
the writers on the film, he does not consider himself a writer first. “I’m more a
practical writer,” he explained. “I make
changes if something isn’t working. I’m
good at that, but I feel others should be
left alone to write who have spent years
honing their craft.” Although he has written fifteen to twenty scripts, he feels there
are better writers out there. His advice for
other filmmakers: “Don’t write your first
film – go to InkTip. Network and find
that great script … There are a lot of good
scripts over there. The key is choosing
the writer. Ninety percent is choice of
project; ten percent is how you make it.
InkTip has become my go-to place. You
have a huge variety of scripts over there,
and I love that.”
Going to America is a blend of John’s
take on the Slovenian fairy tale and a bit
of Param’s own experience coming to
America from India. The film is a heartfelt comedy about two escaped mental
patients on a quest to find love’s true kiss
as they cross America with a video camera in hand. Eddie Griffin (Undercover
Brother, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo)
plays Fumnanya, who is searching for
his fairy tale kiss while Josh Meyers
(Red Oaks, That ’70s Show), as friend
and fellow escapee Andy, documents it
all, causing the bumbling pair to become
a YouTube sensation.

understanding and humble. Very accommodating and kind.”
Working with the actors is one of Param’s
favorite elements of filmmaking, and he
loves meeting knew people and taking
them on this artistic journey. “Sometimes
it lets you in on their secrets. It is a
process of discovering a person. You
cannot direct an actor if you don’t know
them,” he said.
Josh Meyers (left) as Andy
The characters in Going to America
are displaced and out of touch with the
world around them, much like Param’s
initiation to the United States. When he
landed in Newark years ago, he didn’t
even know how to grab a cab. A stranger
was kind enough to drop him at a motel
and assist him in getting a room. “The
United States is a very unique country,”
he said. “Everyone who comes in and
absorbs into the culture finds it very different from where they came from. I did
incorporate some of those emotions [into
the film]. Fumnanya and Andy are from
a mental institution and haven’t seen the
outside world, so when they escape and
experience the freedom of America, it
does come from [those emotions].”
Eddie Griffin was first cast in the film.
He read the script overnight and woke up
wanting to make it. However, casting talent like Eddie created logistical issues, as
he had his show running in Las Vegas that
production had to work around. “When
you have someone like Eddie, you want to
maximize your time,” said Param.
But Eddie also made the production fun,
as Param said: “Like one long stand-up
comedy bit … With Eddie there is never
a dull moment on set. He’s always cracking jokes and fun to work with. He’s very
The journey has gone well for Param.
Going to America has won more than
twenty-five
international
awards,
including the Platinum Award at Oregon
International Film Festival and sweeping up five awards at the San Francisco
Global Film Festival: Best of Fest, Best
Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and
Best Editor. The film had a limited theatrical release last year and is out on VOD
now with plans for theatrical releases
around Europe and Asia.
Unlike some Hollywood producers,
Param isn’t trying to become a master of
a genre or build a studio career. “I’m an
indie director and build my own slate, so
I don’t want to limit myself to a genre,”
he said. “As you try to tell each story,
you keep maturing. Each film makes
me a better filmmaker. Experimenting
with different genres and stories grows
me as a person. It is about the journey,
not the destination.”
