For a science-fiction film, Houston looked different, clean, and unassuming. For Amir’s passion project, it was the perfect location for him. The Reality Behind Alternate Realities T he number one thing InkTip hears from producers is that they’re looking for a strong story. Amazing dialogue or interesting locations don’t matter if the story has no substance. An entertaining story and a captivating premise is what caught producer/director Amir Valinia’s eye when he read Andrew M. Henderson’s short script Flashes that was posted on InkTip. Flashes was only a short, but Amir saw potential in this story and contacted Andrew for a feature version. “I was looking at sci-fi projects,” Amir stated. “I’m fascinated with alternate realities and time travel, so when I read Flashes I asked if he could make it a feature. [It was] too good for it to be a short.” Fortunately, Andrew was already working on adapting the short to a longer form. After some conversations with Amir, Andrew outlined it, wrote it, and his short became the feature film Alternate Realities now available on Amazon Prime, among others. Not too shabby, considering most shorts end up making a paltry round at festivals before dying a quick cinematic death. “[Working with] Andrew’s been great. He came down for a couple weeks of the shoot and came in for the wrap party. I needed some lines added, so it was nice to have him on set,” Amir said. Alternate Realities stars Donny Boaz (Dallas, Mercy Street) as John Rotit, an architect who finds himself jumping between Tom Sizemore Christopher Judge alternate realities of his life. In order to save his marriage to Clare (Elle LaMont) – and his sanity – he devises a plan to end the other versions of John. The film also stars Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down), Deke Anderson (Green Lantern), and Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1). The first person attached to the project was Donny. He was in the film Because I Love You that Barry Strickland shot in 2012. Barry came onboard as the director of photography and an executive producer for Alternate Realties and told Amir he thought Donny would be perfect for the role. Amir agreed. He sent Donny the script, and he loved it. The role is an actor’s dream – being able to play totally different characters in one film and show your range. Donny Boaz is a name to keep on your radar for breakout actors. In addition to Donny’s interpretation of the various versions of Johnny Rotit, Amir made stylistic choices to distinguish between the fluctuating realities. “We discussed it a lot because at the end you have the surprise of what is going on,” Amir said. “World One is denial. You have the color correction, lighting, and [it’s] happy. World Two is sorrow – lots of shadows, depressing. World Three is anger. The idea behind it was based on American Psycho and that’s how Donny played the character.” Although the story could’ve been set anywhere, it was refreshing to see Houston as the backdrop. Many films take place in But Alternate Realities is more than a sci-fi. It is a love letter and a farewell to Amir’s late girlfriend Erika Cardenas, who passed away a week before shooting for the film began. The tragedy connected Amir to the protagonist, revealing a deeper understanding for the character’s plight. “What I was going through was so emotional; I was looking at the script differently,” he said. “I would drive home and rewrite scenes. I remember going back the night we were going to shoot the suicide scenes. I would listen to songs and rewrite … because of what I was going through. In a way, it helped the movie, for lack of a better term. I saw death as something different, so that’s why the slo-mo scenes are there and are so emotional.” The film is dedicated to Erika and gave Amir a resource to push through his grief. He didn’t want to cancel production and sit around doing nothing but dwell on her death. Instead, he turned to his love of filmmaking to create a moving picture memorial for her. Production is Amir’s favorite part of the film process, so he told us it was fortunate he had Alternate Realities to direct. “The best are the days we go on set. It’s so satisfying to get the shots and look at the dailies … There’s something about being on set – it’s satisfying. When I’m on set, it’s like I’m on vacation.” Alternate Realities is available on Amazon Prime, DirecTV, and Time Warner. Henderson is the sci-fi writer behind the wide-distribution film Alternate Realities, directed by Amir Valinia. But don’t pigeon-hole Andrew into one genre, or one medium. He has written for film, television, comics, video games, interactive games for the iPhone and Android, and more! His published comics include Noctua, Kristarella, and Seul Survivant, and he recently wrote the trailer for Assassin’s Creed: V, directed by Rob Zombie and animated by Tony Moore of The Walking Dead, which premiered at the 2014 ComicCon. Andrew shared with InkTip his experience with Alternate Realities, the best cure for writer’s block, and what he loves about writing. InkTip: You used InkTip to market your short scripts. That’s how Amir found Flashes, later retitled to Alternate Realities, on InkTip. What went through your head when he asked if you could turn it into a feature? Andrew: It was actually rather serendipitous timing, as I was already adapting Flashes into a feature when he contacted me! That was the plan all along, for me. I always conceived it as a long-form narrative and had planned on adapting it into a feature regardless. So when Amir reached back out, the wheels were already in motion. InkTip: How hard was it to adapt your short into a feature script? Andrew: In this instance, it wasn’t terribly arduous, as I had originally conceived it as a feature. For me, the short was always just the tip of the iceberg – a jumping off point for a larger, more fleshed-out story. I already had a blueprint of where I wanted to go with it. There are a lot of very intricate and subtle complexities to the script/ story, and since it involves theoretical physics and time/space jumps, the hardest part was keeping everything straight so it made logical sense, because it’s really like a house of cards – the slightest error in some of the minutia of the story would bring the whole thing tumbling asunder, from a plot point-of-view. I’m one of those nitpicky people, so I was very careful about making sure there were no discernible plot holes for people on IMDb to tear into! InkTip: How did you come up with the story for Alternate Realities? Andrew: That’s a good question. I’m a huge fan of theoretical physics (Michio Kaku is my favorite!) and alternate realities, m-theory, string theory, etc. I love heavy, hard sci-fi, a la Time Crimes, Coherence, Primer, etc. I also really love the idea that we all have different aspects of us, different underlying personalities, which could manifest themselves in various ways, based on certain key events in our life. I also enjoy blending genres. And this film is really a blend of Sci-Fi/Thriller and Romance. This man, John Rotit, is so absolutely and resolutely in love with this woman, Clare, that he will do absolutely anything to be with her. That’s all he wants – to remain in a reality with her. She’s his soulmate, which is something that transcends realities – the idea that in every life, this is the woman he’s supposed to be with. A lot of people compare the film to Sliders, but for me, it was more heavily influenced by Vanilla Sky and The Butterfly Effect. InkTip: Amir mentioned that you were on set some. How was the experience working on set as a writer? Andrew: I was, and that was a lot of fun. I got to meet a lot of the cast and crew, and see them in action, which was a great experience. A lot of time and effort go into making a film, and often as a writer, we don’t get to see or fully understand the physical production side of things. It’s a process and a fun one to witness. Plus, it’s always cool to see an actor speaking your words in person. I think writers should always be on set. InkTip: The film is available on Amazon Prime. Is this your first film you’ve written that has a large distribution? Andrew: Yes, Amazon Prime, DirecTV, Time Warner, and a few other VOD outlets! It is the first film I’ve written with a large distribution. I have another one optioned, so hopefully there will be a second out next year. InkTip: Now that you have a produced feature, do you approach the writing process any differently than when you were just starting out? Andrew: No, not really. I still write what I write – which, at the end of the day, is – and has to be – what I’m passionate about. I’ve tried to write something I thought “could sell,” and it was a disaster. It’s an unavoidable truth that certain projects sell easier than others, but the fact is, the cream still rises to the top. Great material will get you, at the least, meetings. So you have to write what you’re passionate about. InkTip: Is there a part of writing that you love or a side you completely dislike and why? Andrew: I love coming up with clever scenes. I think oftentimes I’ll be sparked by an idea for a specific scene, which I’ll then extrapolate into a plot or script. I like the freedom of coming up with unique ideas for scenarios and seeing how they’ll unfold organically. A lot of the stuff I write tends to be darker, and more raw and cathartic, which is something I enjoy as well. I hate the waiting in the film industry in general – on reads, decisions, etc. I’m a very impatient person, and things tend to move at a glacial pace in the film industry. I’ll also go through spells sometimes where I get For these and many more scripts go to our website www.InkTip.com Q&A – Romantic Comedy writer’s block and literally just cannot write anything. It’s like I’m paralyzed, just staring at the screen. It’s an incredibly helpless and vexing feeling. InkTip: What’s your solution to writers block? Andrew: Bourbon. InkTip: What is your system for keeping on track with your writing and marketing? Andrew: My manager keeps track of stuff he takes out, though usually he’ll let me know where it’s at as well. Personally, I have a virtual sticky note on my laptop where I list what scripts are where, so I always know who is reading what. As far as actual Feature Scripts writing, I try to only work on one spec at a time, with side projects (novel, comic, etc.) simultaneously. Marketing, I use LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook. I have business cards. I live in Hollywood, so I tend to meet people often in the industry, which is nice. Just try to be as proactive as possible. InkTip: How did you secure representation? Andrew: I’ve been repped a few times, but my most recent manager actually came from winning the Silver Prize at the 2015 PAGE Contest for Best Pilot. I ended up signing with one of the judges from the contest. Andrew: Keep writing. Keep querying. Keep being proactive. Don’t let a pass or a no get you too discouraged. It’s an incredibly, incredibly subjective business. In fact, my manager at the time didn’t like the concept for Flashes when I pitched it to her. She didn’t think it could be a movie. I didn’t listen. You’re going to hear a lot of nos, but all you need is one yes. Try not to get too high or too low. A pass doesn’t end your career and a sale/option doesn’t make your career. You need continued longevity to have success in this business. And most importantly, write what you love. InkTip: What advice can you give other writers who are trying to get their foot in the door?
