The cover of our March Newsletter features an interesting photograph by
Grade 11 student, Sebastien Duckett, of the construction taking place behind 67 Bond Street. Work is being done under St John’s Chapel and in the
area beneath the garden of the rectory next to the foundation of the Cathedral. Throughout the restoration of the Cathedral and the transformation of
the surrounding area, life at the Choir School continues. As we look out the
window, students and staff members are treated to a view of both the past
and of history in the making.
As is evident in this newsletter, the shortest month of the year was filled
with a variety of activities in the class room, in choral and beyond.
The season of Lent is a time of preparation and anticipation. In addition to the choral rehearsals for various up-coming liturgical services, we prepare ourselves by reflecting on the
virtues of contrition and forgiveness. The sacrament of Reconciliation, offered by the Cathedral to all of our boys on March 6, is an opportunity to turn again towards the Lord in anticipation of the joy of Resurrection.
I hope that all of our students will have a safe and enjoyable week during the March Break.
It will be a chance to rest up for what comes next. We know that the time after the March
Break until the end of June, involving Holy Week, tour, study, athletics etc., has a tendency
to fly by!
Sincerely
Mr. B. White
Principal

The month of February might very well go down in the history books as one
of the coldest on record. I am happy to report that February was also a very
productive and busy month here at the school.
Last Tuesday evening we launched our 2015 recital season with Mrs. Morris’
studio. Over 30 boys from Grades 3-12 performed on this recital. I would like
to thank Mrs. Morris for all of her hard work and dedication. The boys played
beautifully and I am looking forward to all of the upcoming recitals. The recital schedule is included in this newsletter.
Many of our boys are currently preparing for vocal auditions at various universities. Last week, Dr.
Vicki St. Pierre held a Master Class in the auditorium. Our boys had the opportunity to work with
Dr. St. Pierre and her feedback was very well received. We will also hold a second Master Class next
week with Dr. Darryl Edwards, a voice professor from the University of Toronto. Thank you to Wanda Thorne, our vocal coach, for organizing both events.
Msgr. Ronan’s Music Catalogue containing 941 pieces of music is now completely organized and will
soon be available on our website for download. I would like to sincerely thank Dr. Robin Williams
for his tireless work organizing and cataloguing the Ronan collection. I would also like to thank the
Archdiocese of Toronto for all of their support of this important project.
On Tuesday, March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day, boys from our Grade 12 class, along with members of the
Alumni will be singing under the direction of Harry Hodson, Director Emeritus, at the 10:00 a.m.
Mass at the Cathedral. Please mark your calendars!
We have almost completed our auditions for next year. I am happy to report that we have had many
outstanding candidates complete the audition process so far, and I am confident that we will have an
exceptional group of new boys next year. I would like to extend my thanks to all of the student and
parent volunteers who give so generously of their time on the audition days to welcome families and
answer all of their questions and concerns. I am so proud of the audition process we have in place
and of course, our scouts and support staff work hard to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Thank you all for your time and effort.
Over the March Break I will be travelling to Cologne, Germany to organize next years’ exchange with
the Cologne Cathedral Boys’ Choir. I will also be scouting locations and hosts for our Spring 2017
tour to Germany.
As we approach the upcoming March Break, my wish for every SMCS boy and his family is that you
find some time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.
Sincerely
Stephen Handrigan

ROBIN WILLIAMS PRESENTATION: THE COMPOSITON OF MSGR ROWAN
IN THE PARISH HALL ON FEBRUARY 4, 2015
Mr. Handrigan and Dr. Williams
following his defense at the
Pontifical Institute
On a sharply cold February afternoon, parents, staff, students and alumni
gathered in the parish hall to hear Robin Williams present the results of his
doctoral thesis on the music of Monsignor John Edward Ronan. Robin discussed the catalogue of Msgr. Ronan’s music that he created, and gave a fascinating presentation about the life and work of our school’s founder. The
presentation gave much interesting biographical information and also contained an excellent look into the significance of Vatican II for the use of music in the Church, and how that impacted the use of Msgr. Ronan’s compositions after his death in 1962. After the presentation, a lively Q&A allowed
alumni to share their recollections of Msgr. Ronan, his teaching methods
and his compositions.
Following the presentation at the
Choir School, Robin departed for
Rome, where he successfully defended his thesis at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. Mr.
Handrigan represented the Archdiocese of Toronto at the
presentation. We congratulate Dr. Williams on his excellent
work and look forward to publishing his catalogue online at
www.smcs.on.ca!
A copy of Msgr. Ronan’s 1935
doctoral thesis, which was
brought from the PIMS
archives for the occasion.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE
Congratulations to our SMCS/SJCS Spears for going undefeated en route to a first place finish in the
TDCAA winter mini-tournament!! A job well done by all the players, including a decisive 6-1 win against
our rivals Marshall McLuhan. A big thank you to both coaches from SMCS and SJCS for taking the time
out of their busy schedules coach the team. Good luck to the team as they go on to compete in the High
School Catch the Spirit tournament on March 5th against all schools from the Toronto area and GTA.
On a more personal note, I would like to take the time to say a huge thank you to all my current and past
teammates and coaches for making the past four years unbelievable. Being on the team from the very start
where we were dead last to finishing first place in four short years definitely means a lot. I would like to
give shout outs to: Mme Dakin for introducing me to this sport, encouraging me along the way, and
providing the guidance I needed to improve and Matthew Law for always training with me and helping
me improve my skills. I can definitely say that as my very last year of high school ends, I am leaving this
team in very capable hands for the future. To all future members of Spears Ultimate: Continue to practise
and play hard and never give up no matter the challenge!!!

Hello everyone! This is Timothy Stocker and I am here on behalf of the Junior W5H team to tell

HOZA PRESENTATION—FEBRUARY 4, 2015
On February 4th HOZA came to our school and they gave us an amazing, enlightening and uplifting performance. Hoza! Hoza is an African word that is commonly used in African dance
that means to STOP what you’re doing, START something new and CHANGE. When the 2 man
group, “Hoza”, gave us a different kind of music than we were used to at our school. This band
also gave us amazing African music that got everybody tapping to the beat of the drum, dancing
along, playing some of the instruments and singing.
This African music band did not only give us a musical experience but a historical one also.
That day we learned about the time during WWII when Ethiopia was being attacked by Italy
and they held their own the first attack but then the second time they were quite unprepared
and brutally lost and were slightly taken over but shortly after they received help and the Italians were driven out. This was related to bullying because Ethiopia was a smaller and developing country. There were many important lessons taught by the band and it was an overall fun
experience. Thank you Hoza please visit our school another time!

Congratulations to Amit Nehri in Grade
10 for his awarding-winning essay, La
musique classique attire les adolescents à
leurs communautés. Amit’s essay was selected from entries submitted by students
of grades 10 to 12 from across the country
that addressed the question:
Michaëlle Jean, l’ancienne gouverneure
générale du Canada, a dit: « Le sport, la
culture et les arts sont des nécessités qui
unissent les communautés et donnent aux
jeunes un moyen de s'exprimer. » Es-tu
d’accord avec cette citation? Pourquoi?
Amit will be receiving a $1000 scholarship to the University of Ottawa.

On February 20, Mesdames Abou-Merhi and Dakin accompanied the Grade
11
students to the Francophone International Film Festival where they saw De toutes nos forces, an inspiring
film by Nils Tavernier based on a true story of which they had been studying the themes for weeks in advance. Here is one student’s review of the film:

The Future
CASEY JONES, THE BRAVE ENGINEER
Sometimes I sit and wonder,
As I watch the snowplough plough,
What the Earth would be like,
1000 years from now.
Casey Jones
would never be late.
Will it be all dirty and reek?
Or will it be all shiny and sleek?
I wish I could go see the Earth,
1000 years from now.
Will there be silver buildings?
Are lamp-posts made of gold?
I’d like to go there young,
But I’d be very old!
I hope there are still animals,
Like pigs, sheep and cows …
Will there be flying snowploughs,
1000 years from now?
To face danger,
he does not wait.
He stands strong
though his life can’t be long
“Jump, Sim, jump!” he firmly cries,
So Sim does jump, as the engineer dies.
A poem by Tommy Gillespie—Gr 5
If all the trees are still growing,
If water is still clean,
I’ll know the people of the past
Were very, very keen.
Sometimes I sleep and wonder,
As I have a great big snooze,
If I want to build a futuristic town,
What have I got to lose?

The Robotics Club continues to meet every Tuesday from 3:30-5:00
in room 304. The Grade 6's completed their session in January and
the Grade 5's will finish a six week session at March Break. With the
generous support of CSAC, the Robotics Club has recently purchased
three more robots and three laptops for programming. The new
equipment will enable us to accommodate the large number of students who participate every week. It is such an amazing student led
club! The participants are so excited and engaged and though we
have had five or six students per computer, the boys have managed to
collaborate and share the screen time well. Mathew Lane(Gr. 6) explains what the boys do in the club:
In the past four weeks working
with the Grade 5 students, I have seen them develop from kids with little or no
programming skills into knowledgeable robotics experts. The student leaders
David Fernandes (Gr. 11), Christian Sforza (Gr. 7), Daniel Cunic (Gr. 7) and
Matthew Mirvish (Gr. 6) have all been a huge part of the learning process. We
teach the students to use simple but specific code to program a robot to move
and perform increasingly difficult tasks such as following line patterns, turning, stopping on command, recognizing colours, angles and obstacles in the
robot's path. If you ask any of them about their knowledge of code, you probably won't understand a word they say, unless you are a computer programmer.
Now that's success!
After many requests by those who pass by our door every Tuesday, we are planning to visit the Grade 3 class to provide an interactive demonstration after the March Break. With the new equipment, we are also hoping to be able to
open the club to students from Grades 5-8 starting shortly after March
Break. We will keep you posted!
