The aim of this project is to research and find out, if fitness wearables help our knowledge of fitness and general health. We aim to answer the following question “Can fitness wearables really help improve our knowledge and understanding of fitness?” We will explore and experiment with various fitness devices to see if they will work and if so do they encourage people to exercise more. We plan to do this is by purchasing a number of apps and technology to evaluate and explore if and how they work. The class will be split up into different groups for the project. The following questions will be discussed and answered: How many people actually knew any fitness devices and if they used them? 1 How could wearables help us in day to day life? How could wearables help our sports life? What do sports professionals use to record fitness? Could wearables decrease your insurance? Rathdown Junior School Exertech Method We will look up information about different types of devices, what they do and how they work. We will also explore and discuss music and whether it helps and motivates you when you’re exercising. We will explore and discuss, if knowing the words and the beat of a song helps. We will measure distances around the school by counting steps. We will then explore how many steps on average we take over three days. We will use our measurements within the school to help us. We will add all our steps over the three days and find our average. Each student will complete this and we will discuss this as a group, identifying differences between people. We will divide into groups to research topics like exergames, dimensions of the pitches for various sports, impact of music and beat and if insurance companies could use the bands to help reduce the cost of insurance. We will invite Samsung and a Irish hockey coach Peter Caruth to come and talk to us about wearables from a technology point of view and a sports persons point of view We are going to order four wearable fitness devices and a parent is very kindly going to supply us with a number of other devices. Each girl will be wearing a device for a few days and at the end we will come together to analyse and compare all the different devices. 2 Rathdown Junior School This year the Rathdown Junior School P6 girls, are taking part in BT Young Scientist Primary Science Fair. The subject we researched was “Can wearable fitness technology improve our understanding of fitness”. Over the past number of weeks we have been researching our subject and gathering information. We are very excited to be going to the RDS on the 7th of January. Our project is about fitness wearables. The aim of our project is to research and find if fitness wearables help our understanding of fitness and general health. We experimented with many different devices to see if they worked and if so, do they encourage you to exercise more! We did this by purchasing the apps and technology and experimenting to see if they work. The class was split up into different groups and we researched the various different aspects of the project. For example one aspect was to see if wearing a device could decrease the cost of your health insurance! That is just one of the many different things to do with our project. What wearables we are using? We were using different types of wearable devices and apps for example The wearables we used were FitBit Samsung gears2, Garmin Vivofit and the apple watch. The apps were Runtastic Tracknote and pedometer. Samsung Talk On Thursday, 3rd of December, Cathy from Samsung came in to talk to us about some of their wearables and fitness devices. Firstly she talked to us about was some smartwatches that they have made. The main one she focused on was the Gear S2. It is customizable and it tracks your fitness and activity. It has lots of apps and it measures your heart rate, sleep and it’s also a pedometer. Cathy told us that Samsung sponsor Come and join us on Thursday the 7th of January between 10am and 4pm in the RDS, Ballsbridge to see our project. the Leinster Rugby Team and every few months, she gives them new Samsung technology. She also brought in a device called the Samsung Gear VR. It is a headset that attaches to Samsung phones and allows you to see a virtual reality 3D world. People looked very funny while wearing it! Why were we doing this? We were running around the hockey pitch and playing tag because we were seeing how many steps we took and how much calories we burned. Survey Monkey Results Music P6 used a website called Survey Monkey. The website Some girls researched music the questions we asked were: to see how it improves your fitness. Some songs that we found were : 1. This Girl Is On Fire, 2. Party Rock Anthem, 3. What To You Mean? allows you to set up your own survey for free. Some of Q1. What wearables/ apps do you have to help improve your fitness? Q2. Does it carry out desired functions? Q3. What is the most beneficial aspect for you ? Q4. It gives energy for our muscles. Nutrients are vital for the body to be able to exercise, if we don't eat good nutrients our bodies become unhealthy and can make us overweight. DIET A diet is what a person eats. It's important that we eat the right amount of calories per day so we don't become over or under weight. Levels of nutrition depend on the age and sex you are. Teenage girls should eat between 1800 and 2000 calories per day. Really good diets include fruits, protein, vegetables, grains and dairy. HOW FITNESS HELPS Fitness helps our bodies in many ways. Exercise helps the brain because it reduces stress and helps you focus. Furthermore exercise can help the lungs and heart circulate blood around the body. Also exercise can help control cholesterol and blood sugar levels to prevent diseases. Exercise helps muscles become strong and flexible and prevent them from becoming weak. Bones need exercise to become strong. Exercise can also increase metabolic rate which helps food you eat form energy and maintain a healthy weight. SOME WAYS TO GET FIT Two kinds of exercise you can use to become fitter are, Aerobic and Anaerobic exercise. Aerobic exercises are sports, which involve running, walking fast and swimming. These are exercises which strengthen the heart, lungs and bones along with having many other benefits for our bodies. 7 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Aerobic Exercise can help burn calories which, helps to maintain a healthy weight. Anaerobic exercise is a sport or activity which helps to improve and build muscles by undertaking exercises such as weight lifting and wrestling. In the case of anaerobic exercise cells release energy from food without oxygen. What is Fitness? Stamina Stamina is being able to continue an activity for a long time. To help improve your stamina, you need to take part in aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming, running, cycling and dancing. Aerobic exercise strengthens you heart and lungs which means more blood and oxygen can be easily pumped around your body. Strength and Power To increase your power and strength, along with building up your muscles you should take part in anaerobic exercise. If your muscles are strong and well developed your risk of injury is less. You don’t have to lift weights to become strong; you can do resistance training like push-ups where you are pushing against the weight of your body. Rowing is also good for this. Flexibility This means your body is able to go through regular movements without feeling sore or stiff. Your body needs regular movement otherwise your tendons will get stiff and it will be hard to touch your toes and scratch your back. 8 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Wearable devices for exercise: There are many wearable devices to track steps, or to track you’re heart rate, sleeping or just overall fitness. Wearable devices are very convenient because they can go anywhere with you and are usually worth the investment. Most wearables suggest we complete an average of 10,000 steps a day however normally people take between 5,000-10,000 steps per day so we are going to see how many steps we do. Why fitness is important: It is important to be fit because it helps you from getting diseases and makes you happier. It’s important to get an hour of exercise a day. Exercise is important because it keeps you fit and healthy. Exercise can make you have more energy and even help you live longer. Physical fitness and exercise can help you sleep better and strengthen bones and muscles. Every child should get approximately 60 minutes of exercise a day. 1 in 4 children is obese. Only 1/4 of children get the recommended amount of exercise. Exercise will have the most effect on your body when you break it down into 15 minute chunks. 9 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Nutrition Apps For BT Young Scientist we researched some nutrition apps. We found some on Google Play and App Store. Weight loss for kids and teens: This app is not available on Android but it is on Apple App Store. It helps kids and teens to be healthy in a fun way. NFL play 60: This app is not available on Android but it is on Apple App Store too. It is like an animated game that you control by running and jumping. Nicolas' Garden: This app is not available on Android but it is on the App Store. It helps you to eat healthy meals. It rates each meal. Fooducate: this app is available on Android but not in our country. Food Truth: This app is available on Android. It has healthy recipes and it's like a cookbook. You get to choose between different recipes depending on the season of the year. It is very easy to use because you can choose the recipe for your level and they give you very simple and healthy recipes. Nutrition Facts: This app is available on Android. It tells you the different amount of ingredients in food, so it helps you to cut-out certain food of your diet. Eat-And-Move-O-Matic: This app isn't available on Android but it is on the App Store. It tells you what you have to do for burning calories after eating something. It is helpful because it teaches you about the foods you are eating. Healthy eating recipes: This app is available on Android. It has a lot of healthy recipes and it tells you if they have proteins, minerals, omega, vitamins, etc. Health and Nutrition Guide: This app is available on Android. It gives you healthy tips for children, women or men. It also gives you tips about your hair and how to keep a healthy skin. There is an option called nutrition calculator in which you have to write down your weight. 10 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Insurance and Fitness Wearable’s Health insurance may be very expensive. In the USA for example companies such as PacifiCare offer a discount for customers who care for their health better. So by using a device that helps you to monitor your health you can save money every year. Tracking “gadgets” already play a role in car insurance for some Americans. Progressive, for instance, offers drivers a small device they can plug it into their dashboards so the company can monitor their driving over 30 days. Safe drivers are then eligible for a discount. Tech entrepreneurs in the health space say insurance companies are currently figuring how to best access the data generated by today’s fitness trackers. Some are even exploring punishments for unhealthy behaviour recorded by a wearable! The biggest challenge is that a lot of fitness and health tracker devices are US based, so the data is stored on U.S. servers. So the data would need to be stored on Irish servers. 11 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Music Music motivates you and stops you from becoming bored while working out. Upbeat and quick beat songs set your pace while running. At Brunel University in London, Doctor Costas Karageorghis carried out a test to see if music actually helps when working out. He found out that music makes working out far more positive, improves the feeling state of people when exercising and increases exercise endurance by 15%. Thirty participants ran on a treadmill while listening to pop and rock tracks by Queen, Red Hot Chilly Peppers and Madonna. The tracks were selected according to scientific principles. We worked in groups to design and create our very own imaginative fitness wearables, here are a few examples below. Trackshoë We made a shoe that can track your step, counts your heart rate, tells you how heavy you are, what distance you have ran, how much activity you have done that day, how much weight you've lost, how much weight you've gained, it's waterproof and it's super comfy. It's called...................TRACKSHOË😊😊. Your progress will be shown on your phone on an app called Trackshoeapp. The App is free! . Trackshoë is €200. You can buy rainbow laces that are made for Trackshoë. They are €2. The Tech fit 30.3 XL. The Techfit 30.3 XL is a smart watch that is also a fitness tracker. It is touchscreen and is water and dust proof. The screen is made of gorilla glass. It has a personal audio coach and camera built in. You can buy straps that are different colours. There are attachable flowers. It has a pedometer, heart rate monitor, sleep monitor, clock, texts, calls, facetime, distance tracker, camera and an audio coach. It is very comfortable to wear and does not rub on your wrist. It's not too big of a design and doesn't get in the way, it is also able to sync with any type of phone. 14 Rathdown Junior School Exertech The FF double strap watch. FF stands for Future Fitness. The watch has a thin strap that wraps around twice; you can also wear it as a clip so you can put it on your tracksuit or top. It has a pedometer and a heart rate monitor. It has a magnet clasp that can put electricity into it to charge it when you press it. It has a square bezel, main page button, power off button and screen off button. It's a thin bracelet. It's easy to use and comfortable. THE AQUA GLASS S7 The aqua glass S7 is a new and modern way to measure your fitness while swimming. It is a pair of goggles with special Gorilla Glass so you can see a screen that shows the information from your swimming. Obviously it is waterproof and dust resistant. It measures your cardiovascular and respiratory fitness and keeps track of your swimming. It can connect to your phone so you can look at the results from your swimming. It is compatible with pool water, salt water and fresh water. 15 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Snap fit It is not only a fitness device, but a smart watch. It can link with your phone to send calls and texts, access music and photos and there's even an app which allows you to compare your progress and see if you've improved. It can also track your steps, how many flights of stairs you've climbed and how many calories you've burned. Plus you can check your heart rate. It can also make you're fitness plan depending on your heart rate and age. It is dust resistance and water proof. Little Steps Little Steps is a device that clips onto your shoelace. It counts your steps, keeps track of your weight and it knows how fast you’re running. It is like a personal trainer and can measure your water intake. It comes in a range of colours. It is very durable and it’s charged by being plugged into your phone but it has a long charge and therefore you don’t need to charge it too much. FIT ROTATION also known as FIT R My device is named Fit Rotation. I named my device this because of the rotating sphere that is used instead of having a touchscreen device (I got this idea from the Rotating bezel on the Samsung gear S2). The FIT R has a pedometer, a heart rate tracker, a clock and a calorie tracker. There’s also an app store where you can download other fitness apps. 16 Rathdown Junior School Exertech All About The Girlometer! Girlometer is a girly and handy wearable fitness device. Here are some of the things that the Girlometer can do: - There is a built in phone so the Girlometer is half fitness device/watch and half phone! But don't worry, there is a special screen to cover the phone when you are wearing the device, so you won't accidently call someone! -There is an app that has Netflix and it switches off when you need to exercise. - There is a child tracker app and it is so easy to use. -There are many different types, colours and styles of bands and are very easy to swop over. There are many more things such as step counter, liquid and caffeine intake app and a sugar intake app. GO FITNESS! GO GIRLOMETER!! The optical runner The optical runner is a new fitness gadget which allows your scenery to change to keep you moving. You put on the glasses and it changes your surroundings to something that will make you run more. You can connect your optical runner to a treadmill. We think the optical runner would be a very beneficial gadget and it would motivate us to run more. 17 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Samsung Talk Cathy O Flaherty from Samsung came into our school and talked to us about Samsung’s latest technology. She talked about the Samsung phone S6, S6 edge, VR (Virtual Reality) and the Gear S2. My favourite one was the VR. I will be explaining about the Gear S2 and the VR. Gear S2 The Samsung Gear S2 is one of Samsung’s newest smartwatches. It 18 includes: Circle shaped screen. Gorilla Glass (Touchscreen durable glass) Water resistant Dust resistant Bezel Heartbeat monitor Receive and send text messages Monitor steps Tells you how much glasses of water you need a day. And how much you have had. It also tells you how much coffee you need to drink and how much you have had. S-Health (It’s an app you can use to track your health) Easy to charge. You just need a wireless charging dock. Rathdown Junior School Exertech Why I would buy a Gear S2 I would buy a Gear S2 because it would motivate me to keep fit and it would be easy to use. Instead of having loads of different devices for tracking your fitness, you can just have the one device which saves a lot of money . I’d also buy it because it’s nice to have it. Thanks to Cathy for coming in, and for showing us all the amazing products and features Samsung has to offer! 20 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Hockey Coach. On the 14th of November, Peter Caruth our hockey coach talked to us about fitness devices that the Irish Men Hockey Team uses. One of the devices that he showed us was Catapult. He only has access to his Catapult during matches. Catapult is a little black box that you put into a piece of clothing that looks like a sports bra. The Catapult measures where and how you run on the pitch and if you are resting for a long time. You can see your results on a website and you can also see your team mates’ results. The Irish Men Hockey Team find the devices very useful and very beneficial. There is a satellite on the side of the pitch during matches, which records the players’ movements using the Catapult which is monitored by a strength and conditioning coach during training and matches. Peter also showed us a Garmin Watch. All the players on the Irish Men Hockey Team get these but if they lose it they have to pay for it. The Garmin Watch tells you the time, counts your steps and your daily activity level. It also measures your heart rate. We all got to look at it and hold it. The Garmin and Catapult system is also integrated for max results. 21 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Surveys. We have found that by completing this project, we have become more aware of our activity levels and how we can use technology, to improve our knowledge about ourselves and our physical fitness. We hope that our learning from this project can be used by us and others in school to help our school community improve and increase our activity levels altogether in the future. 26 Rathdown Junior School Exertech What we knew before the project Abby- I only knew little about wearable fitness devices and how they worked before. What I did know was from my parents watching reviews on the television. My family don’t own any fitness devices and I would like to invest in one for Christmas. Sophie-I knew a little bit about the Apple Watch and I had heard some of the other devices but I did not own any. I mainly learned about them from TV shows or from video review. Sarah-I knew a bit about the Fitbit from the Argos website and I also knew about the Apple Watch as its very popular nowadays I don’t own any but I would like to own one. Megan-Jane- I knew a bit about the Apple watches and the pedometer. I knew about them mainly from ads. I wouldn’t have bought one beforehand. What have we learned in this project? Sarah. I have learned that sometimes many fitness devices may seem very expensive and very cool but most of them do not work. I have also learned that syncing fitness devices to a tablet is very hard to do. At first I thought the project would be a little bit boring, I thought that we would just be doing lots and lots of researching and typing but we got to do lots of fun experiments like: testing out fitness devices and downloading apps to see if they worked. I would not buy a fitness band because I find them really hard to use, but overall I think that this project was great fun. Megan-Jane. I have learned that most fitness devices do work but there are a few that don’t. Also with the ones that don’t work syncing is very hard. I do prefer non electronic devices because if you press the wrong button all your information could be lost. I thought that most of the experiments were fun. I would not buy a fitness device because I find them confusing and difficult. 27 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Abby. I learned that some fitness devices are able to deliver what they claim while some do not. I also learned that using a fitness band was not that hard but syncing was difficult. I would buy a fitness band because I think that it would help me become a fitter and more athletic person. I think that the most important aspect in doing the project was teamwork and listening skills, as if we did not have these skills the project would be impossible. Sophie I have learned that some fitness devices don’t work as well as companies says they do and the ones we have used are not that accurate. We have been using a lot of teamwork and I found that we all work well together. I would buy a fitness band because I think that they would make me a more athletic and fitter person. I have learned a lot during this project such as learning all about fitness devices and how to record information. As you can see, the main thing that we learned is that some fitness devices will not work even though the people who created them claim that the device does. But luckily, there are still many devices that do! 28 Rathdown Junior School Exertech Conclusions. We were made more aware of the benefits and drawbacks of wearables. We now understand how beneficial they are to sports people and their fitness. Also how beneficial they are to everyone to create fitness awareness.
