This will be your refuge. Virgo August 23 – September 22 This is a month to physically build and grow. The first of the month is your planning stage. Aquarius January 23 – February 22 Finally everything comes to a head the beginning of this month. The sudden changes that have taken place will come to an end. Now is the time to put everything back into place. However, you must go with the flow and live in the moment. Things may not go the way you’re anticipating, but they will turn out right. Scorpio October 23 – November 22 You’re keyword for this month is choice. It may be a difficult path right now, picking which is the lesser of two greater evils, but you usually do best under pressure. Keep in mind the words “no fear” and you’ll be guided in the right direction even though it may not look like it at the time. Pisces February 23 – March 22 While everyone else is getting caught up in the changes that are going on now, you’re settling into your peace and harmony. If it is close enough to the Earth or with a telescope, it appears to be red. This is because it is ruled by the first of the fire signs, Aries. Last month Mars was in its natural sign Aries and it brought us to be accident prone and gave urgency to our life. This month our actions become more grounded, because it’s now in Taurus, which allows us to follow our personal values and beliefs to achieve our highest goals. Monthly horoscopes by Jacqueline. Closets are dark. Closets are meant for clothes, not people. Jesus speaks of light and darkness in the Gospels. The light of a lamp is not to be hidden, but placed where all can see and benefit from the light. He compares our eyes: ‘our ability to see and perceive light,’ as the lamp of our being. If our eyes are healthy we are full of light; if not, we are full of darkness. The darkness of the closet can be ambiguous, obscure, and oblivious. But, light is revealing, hopeful, and enlightening. One cannot perceive light unless they have eyes to see; and then if there is light, they can see. Spiritually, light represents God’s wisdom and knowledge, and the eyes our capacity to spiritually discern and understand God’s revelation. If our sight is distorted, we cannot clearly see or understand reality. I am afraid we live in a world of darkness whose vision is distorted and therefore blinded to social justice, civilized tolerance, and commonsense open-mindedness. The gay community has struggled for thousands of years to survive hatred, persecution, and capital punishment. We continue to fight for our right to exist. We continue to emerge from a closet-history of radicalism, discrimination, and repulsion. Consider the story Queen Esther; a closet queen if ever there was one, but she was not lesbian, she was Jewish living as an exile in a foreign land. Esther lived in Persia along with many Jews whose families had been taken captive in the Babylonian captivity a hundred years earlier. By the time of this story, Babylon, in turn, had been conquered by the Persians. As an orphan, Esther grew up in the home of her cousin Mordecai until she won favor with the king and became queen. Of course, all the while her true Jewish identity was kept hidden. Hadassah was her real name. But, like many, she assimilated into the surrounding culture to avoid persecution. One day, a plot was brought to Esther’s attention; a plot intending to kill all the Jews in the empire. When the news reached Esther, she knew the stakes were high. She knew she had much to lose by revealing her true identity. She would risk her life and approach the king, an absolute monarch, to inform him of this conspiracy, or the lives of many innocents would be slaughtered. She could have, in that moment of crisis continued to hide. But, she publicly became one of her 14 people in order to save them. She had to come out of her ‘closet’ of convenient concealment to effect the redemption of her nation. Esther proclaimed herself a part of her people, and in so doing, she achieved wholeness and salvation for herself and for countless others. I see in the story of Queen Esther a call for political action; a call that goes out to the gay community— some who are still closeted, some who are inactive, unvocal, non-supporting of their own people. If we are to survive the persecution and prejudices that threaten us, then we need to unite in solidarity and pride. We must personally identify with the oppressed, in order to bring liberation and significance to light. We need people of integrity and courage to stand up and speak out. Queen Esther came out of her closet— not of sexual orientation— but of ethnic and religious identity, for a noble cause: not of saving her own skin, but of saving her entire people from extermination. This is the stuff of true heroism and courage. This is the true light that God shines into our hearts to illumine all, not just a few. The ‘lamp’ Jesus refers to that provides light is a lamp of illumination, or as the Aramaic word points to, a ‘visionary state’ in which our sense of boundaries and consciousness are expanded greatly. When will we all see that God’s light does not exclude people from justice and mercy? God’s light is all-inclusive and all-embracing. This is the Light that dispels darkness and evil, hatred and ruthlessness, injustice and intolerance in our world. As Glinda, the Good Witch of the North says to the munchkins in The Wizard of Oz: “Come out, come out, wherever you are!” So God challenges and invites us today to leave darkened closets— to be Bearers of the Light to a world of obscurity… I trust we shall heed the invitation…Amen. Celeste promises a new column for August, ed.] PEARL M. HART The Fourth of July always makes me think of the United States Constitution. Okay, I know I am a little strange, but it is one of those documents that we tend to take for granted until we really need it. It is also one of those documents that is easy to forget about until folks like Senator Bill Frist decide that it should be used as a means of exclusion, instead of inclusion as it has historically always been used. The lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered and gay communities are fortunate that at this juncture in the early twenty first century we have entire organizations dedicated to ensuring that GLBT persons are as included in the protections the U. S. Constitution offers an any other citizen. This was not always the case. In the not so distant past it was up to individuals to zealously guard and actively advocate for protection under the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We are extremely fortunate in our history that such persons of courage and distinction were present. One of the most important forebears for organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and the Lambda Legal Defense Fund was lawyer Pearl M. Hart. Born Pearly Minne Harchovsky, Pearl M. Hart was known all of her life as “Hart”. She was called Hart but was known for her large “heart” and dedication to defending the rights of “the least lucrative and most oppressed kind of clients” namely, children, women, immigrants and gay men and lesbians. Hart practiced law in the city of Chicago from 1914 to 1975. She was one of the first female attorneys in the city to specialize 18 in criminal law. Hart attended the nightschool program at Chicago’s John Marshall Law School in 1911, earning her tuition by working during the day as a law clerk and stenographer. She graduated in 1914 and was admitted to the Illinois Bar on October 7 of that same year and began to build her criminal law practice. Her early legal career focused on the needs of children. She was regarded as an expert on juvenile justice and drafted legislation, served on committees, and spoke before a variety of civic groups, all in her dedicated effort to protect Chicago’s most vulnerable citizens. In the 1950s, Hart devoted increased time to defending individuals accused of subversions against the U.S. government. The three major laws under which her clients were prosecuted were the Alien Registration Act of 1940, the Internal Security Act of 1950, and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. (In these days of heated debate over immigration and the rights of immigrants as well as personal civil liberties under life with Homeland Security, Hart would probably feel all too at home in the U.S. of 2006.) Hart’s most prominent case from this era was U.S. v. Witkovich. George Witkovich received an order of deportation on June 15, 1953. In a subsequent hearing before the Immigration and Naturalization Service, he was asked twenty-two questions about his activities and affiliations. On Hart’s advice, he refused to answer the questions because they were not relevant to whether or not he should be deported. The United States filed a lawsuit compelling his answers, and Hart countered with an appeal that eventually made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. She won the case in 1957. became directly involved with the gay and lesbian community, although she had represented many gays in court before that time. She probably felt freer to express her own lesbian sexuality only after the death of her parents. She was extremely close to her large extended family but kept her relationships with women hidden from them, never openly identifying as lesbian. Yet this did not prohibit her activism on behalf of the lesbian and gay communities. She co founded the Mattachine Midwest, which had its first public meeting on July 27, 1965. She served as its legal counsel until her death. In addressing one of the early meetings of the group, she urged the members to stop viewing themselves as members of a minority and assert the equal rights which are guaranteed to them by the Constitution. Her advocacy for her gay male clients arrested for soliciting sex in a public place, those entrapped to do so, and those caught in the crossfire of a bar raid, earned her the nickname, “Guardian Angel of Chicago’s Gay Community.” On the fiftieth anniversary of her graduation from the John Marshall Law School she was accorded an honorary doctor of law degree. The City of Chicago honored Hart twice, posthumously. In 1992 she was chosen to be inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame. In 2001 Hart was the recipient of a Chicago Tribute Marker of Distinction. The Bill of Rights was Pearl Hart’s moral compass. She practiced law the way she lived her life with compassion, integrity and an unwavering passion for social justice. This 4th of July, in whatever way you celebrate, light a sparkler for the life of Pearl Hart who did so much to illuminate the lives of our people. ORLANDO According to a June 15 article in the Orlando Sentinel by Christine Dellert, state Rep. D. Alan Hays told members of an AIDS health-care group that his gay cousin died after contracting AIDS and deserved his fate. According to the article, two nurses and a regional manager from Positive Healthcare, say the Umatilla Republican leaned across his desk and said his cousin was “as queer as a three-dollar bill” and “had that homosexual lifestyle and deserved what he got.” Hays, a retired dentist, has denied the slur. “That is totally incorrect,” he said from Tallahassee. “I did tell them that I had a cousin that died [of AIDS]. . . . To assert that I said they get what they deserve is just beyond comprehension,” he said. Hays said his cousin died of AIDS about a decade ago. the legislator’s words were insensitive, not empathetic. “It’s a devaluating statement,” he said. “Nobody deserves AIDS -- nobody.” ST. For those not familiar with SCPA, it’s a coalition of progressive people and groups and the festival attracts around 300 people to get information at numerous tables representing a wide gamut of organizations, good entertainment and networking opportunities with other progressive people. For more information, check out their web site at www.SpaceCoastProgressiveAlliance.org I hope you didn’t miss Compass GLCC’s Stonewall Ball where they honored Palm Beach County Tax Collector, Anne M. Gannon, with the Plakas Leadership Award for her long history of inclusive leadership for social justice issues. As a lobbyist in the early 1990’s, Ms. Gannon has been an advocate in the work to end HIV/AIDS, protecting individuals from stringent reporting measures which would deter people from being tested. She also helped to defeat a bill in the Florida House that would track and trace those living with HIV without providing funds to assist those who need help. As a Florida legislator, Ms. Gannon was well known for her support of women’s equal rights, women’s reproductive rights, as well as an advocate for victims of sexual violence. She has also supported minority communities through programs for starting minority owned businesses. Ms. Gannon served on the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council helping to secure inclusive non-discrimination policies throughout cities and government agencies in the county. Always the highlight of June in Palm Beach The Stonewall Ball is something everyone in the Palm Beaches should make it a point to attend. for all Americans by working to end hate crimes, eliminate discrimination in the workplace and promote equality for all of our families. But this year, Democrats up and down the ticket and all across the country are working to create an America that respects the rights and dignity of every American.
