Welcome from the 2015 IFATS President
It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 13th International Federation
for Adipose Therapeutics & Science (IFATS) Conference at the JW Marriott
in New Orleans, Louisiana. Building on our twelve previous successful
conferences, we hope to facilitate meaningful interactions between clinicians
and basic science investigators in the field of adipose therapeutics, while
providing a platform for attendees to learn about advancing technologies in
this rapidly evolving field.
A highlight of the meeting will be a special symposium on Adipose Stem Cells
for Orthopedic Applications on Thursday, November 5th. We are fortunate to
have Dr. Rocky Tuan from the University of Pittsburgh chairing this symposium. He heads a panel
that includes: Dr. Nina Tandon of EpiBone, Dr. Elizabeth Loboa from North Carolina State University,
Dr. Warren Grayson from Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Ming Pei from the University of West
Virginia. I would like to thank each of the speakers for their participation in this important symposium.
Another session will focus on regulatory issues and approval for clinical use of adipose tissue and
adipose stem cells. Speakers in this session include regulatory experts and IFATS members from both
academic and corporate environments. The session will feature a panel discussion to address specific
questions from meeting attendees.
Additional highlights include state-of-the-art topics presented by our Keynote speakers. Rocky Tuan will
discuss the use of adult stem cells for orthopedic applications. Steven Farmer from Boston University
will focus on adipose tissue as a metabolic organ. Malcom Maden from The University of Florida will
present mammalian organ regeneration.
The panel discussion sessions combined with free paper and poster presentation sessions, and other
more informal opportunities, will provide ample time for conference attendees to exchange ideas with
one another, and potentially provide a global perspective on currently available and future adipose stem
cell applications.
I would also like to welcome and thank our exhibiting companies and sponsors for their support. This
excellent educational program could not be provided without their invaluable contributions.
On behalf of the IFATS Board of Directors, we look forward to another successful meeting and to
welcoming you to New Orleans. With world-class dining, music, and entertainment options all within
walking distance of the meeting venue, the city of New Orleans extends its hospitality in a unique and
fulfilling way.
As we say down here, Laissez les bon temps roulez (Let the good times roll!)
With best wishes,
Bruce Bunnell, PhD

AREA ATTRACTIONS FOR FAMILY MEMBERS
FRENCH QUARTER
The French Quarter, also
known as the Vieux Carré - or
the “Quarter” to locals, sits on
a crescent in the Mississippi
River on some of the highest
ground in New Orleans. Not
only is this the city’s cultural
hub, but is a community
where residents take time to reminisce with neighbors about
times gone by and to welcome visitors in the streets.
Intimate and unique, New Orleans’ oldest neighborhood has
exerted a spell over writers and artists since the time of Mark
Twain, Lafcadio Hern and John James Audubon. French Quarter
architecture is a mix of Spanish, French, Creole and American
styles. Plastered walls and single chimneys reflect laws enacted
after fire virtually destroyed the city in 1788 and 1794. Walled
courtyards are a gift of the Spanish influence.
Cast iron balconies were added to many masonry buildings after
1850 when Baroness Pontalba included them on her fashionable
row houses near Jackson Square. These lacy galleries, along
with plentiful stoops and porches on younger buildings, make
the Quarter a great place for people-watching and every kind of
person imaginable can be spotted on the sidewalks of the Quarter.
JACKSON SQUARE
Historic Jackson Square,
originally known in the 18th
century as “Place d’Armes,”
and later renamed in honor
of the Battle of New Orleans
hero Andrew Jackson, is a
timeless attraction in the
heart of the French Quarter
of New Orleans.
This famous landmark facing the Mississippi River is surrounded
by historic buildings, including the St. Louis Cathedral, the
Presbytere and Cabildo (Louisiana State Museums), not to
mention the Lower and Upper Pontalba Apartments, the
oldest apartment buildings in the United States. The Pontalba
Apartments offer retail shops, museums, galleries and restaurants
on the ground level; their second and third floors still house a
selection of prestigious apartments.
For well over a half-century, there has been an open-air artist
colony at Jackson Square. Local artists paint, draw, create portraits
and caricatures, and display their work on the square’s iron fence.
Jackson Square is a favorite site for visitors and locals. The
artists, restaurants, museums, merchants and the square itself
make Jackson Square one of the French Quarter’s most popular
destinations.
AUDUBON AQUARIUM OF THE AMERICAS
Looming large against the
Mississippi River is the
extraordinary Audubon
Aquarium of the Americas,
one of the top museums of
its kind in America. Here
you will find 15,000 sea life
creatures, representing nearly
600 species in a state-of-theart facility. The Caribbean
Reef tunnel, for example, is 30 feet long and allows the visitor
a view of the Caribbean sea life viewed only by divers. The new
Seahorses Gallery showcases these beautiful creatures as they
swim gracefully between the grasses in their home and glide
through the water.
Want to pet a shark? The shark touch pool allows visitors to
touch a baby shark and talk with the naturalist. The half-milliongallon Gulf of Mexico exhibit teems with fully-grown sharks
and undersea life that thrives around the barnacled pilings of
a simulated oil rig. If anaconda snakes, poisonous frogs and
stunning exotic birds are your interest, then visit the Aquarium’s
Amazon rain forest exhibit. Plan to spend several hours or all day
in this amazing museum filled with aquatic life you’ve only read
about.
