I am a naturalist, photographer, and writer
residing in the state of Utah, in the heart of
a unique and scenic desert region known
as the Colorado Plateau. I chose nature
photography as a way of capturing and
sharing the beauty, power, and fragility of
wild places and the life that inhabits them,
so that those who have become mired in
the man-made chaos may open their
eyes to the real world.

“Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church”
By Robert G. Herr
In 1808, three families broke away from the
Moravian Church and chartered a Methodist
Church on Mt. Pleasant overlooking the Yadkin
River. The church was used quite actively
throughout the century, but by 1928, few of its
congregation remained. It then became part
of the William N. Reynolds estate until 1951
when Mr. Reynolds died. It was then
completely restored and today is used for small
weddings and vesper services.
Built of hewn timbers, the church has a gallery
where slaves once sat during worship. There
are platforms on the side walls which held
lanterns brought by members of the
congregation for evening services. And
nestled in the hill next to the church is a
graveyard dating back to 1765. The epitaphs
there speak quietly about the founders of this
historical place of worship.
WFBC Auction Catalog
Robert G. Herr, noted area artist, has captured
the simple beauty of the church in this watercolor
painting. It is one of a series of local landmarks
Integon Corporation will present annually. It was
presented at Christmastime, 1967 by Integon
Corporation

utensils, objects and furniture. Typical metal objects include utensils, coffee
pots, and similar household items. Wooden objects include tables, chairs, and
chests, including hope chests, toy boxes and jewelry boxes. The practice
began in 18th century New England, and was also extensively carried on
among German immigrants in Pennsylvania. A separate, related tradition
occurs among Scandinavian countries and immigrants, including
Norwegians, Danes and Swedes. German tole painting may concentrate
more on metal and tin objects, while Scandinavian may concentrate more
on wooden objects and furniture. Patterns in the two traditions vary slightly as
well. Modern tole painting typically uses inexpensive, long-lasting and
sturdy acrylic paints. Good quality wooden work is sealed, primed and
sanded before the decorative paint is applied.

“In the Garden”

Frederick Childe Hassam (b. October 17, 1859, Dorchester, Boston,
WFBC Auction Catalog
Massachusetts - d. August 27, 1935, East Hampton, New York) was a
prominent and prolific American Impressionist painter, noted for his urban
and coastal scenes. Along with Mary Cassatt and John Henry Twachtman,
Hassam was instrumental in promulgating Impressionism to American
collectors, dealers, and the museums. He produced over 3,000 paintings,
watercolors, etchings, and lithographs in his career, and was a founding
member of The Ten, an influential group of American artists of the early
20th century. His most famous works are the "Flag" paintings, completed
during World War I.

“Study for the Card Players”
By Paul Cezanne
Gold and Burgundy Wood Frame
Double Matted
Dimension: 16.75” x 20.75”
Original: 1 890-92, graphite and
watercolor on paper
Cézanne created a substantial number of studies and preparatory
drawings for The Card Players series. While it had long been believed he
began the series with the largest paintings and subsequently worked
smaller, 21st century x-rays of the paintings as well as further analysis of
preparatory sketches and studies has led some scholars to believe
Cézanne used both the studies and the smaller versions of The Card
Players to prepare for the larger canvases. Over a dozen initial sketches
and painted studies of local farmworkers were made by Cézanne in
preparation for the final paintings.

All of my artwork is created using natural plant materials, such as pressed
flowers, ferns, bark, leaves, herbs and sometimes even insects. Some of my wall
art includes painting and other techniques to enhance the feeling of the
creation. After completion, the artwork is preserved using a special process
that I have developed through years of trial and error. I started developing my
process in the early 90s when I became obsessed with the idea of preserving
nature. Each piece of original artwork is permanently sealed before I frame it.
This way the plant material will never deteriorate. I do all of the matting and
framing of my artwork using acid free backgrounds for all of my designs, as well
as the highest quality materials available. I grow most of the plant material
used in my artwork and some are collected from our 10 acres of woods. Each
piece is unique. And each original piece is signed and dated by me. As you
can see… My artwork is a labor of love and an extension of myself.

Marketry Inlay
Marquetry is the art of inlaying different woods, and other
natural materials to create a picture. To inlay is to set a
material onto another surface, but recessed in so that
inlayed material is at the same level as the surface. Most of
the time the inlayed material is wood but it could be ivory,
mother-of-pearl, tortoise shells, bark, straw, stone, metal,
gems, etc. All the peculiarities, grain, knots, defects, etc. are
used in the overall effect of the picture.
