She did not break a lifetime relationship with Lithuania, visited it every year, even though she lived and worked in Russia. She started working as a visual development artist in animated film and later directed 24 vivacious and engaging movies herself. Gražina Brašiškytė dreamed of making a Lithuanian animated film, but at the time Lithuania had no conditions for that. Thus, working in “Sojuzmultfilm” studio she created a film “The Castle of Amber” (1959) based on a famous Lithuanian legend about Jūratė and Kąstytis. This is the first animated film created in Lithuanian folk theme. H Heroes are humans or human like figures in most of Lithuanian animation films. To tell the truth, they do not always win, they can even be evil sometimes. Even in Lithuanian mythology most common characters happened to be fairies, witches and devils who look surprisingly similar to us. I Lithuanian illustrators are known worldwide. They illustrate children books, draw characters and background for animation films and commercials. Most of our jokes come from old proverbs or comic situations from everyday life. Jokes in Lithuanian animation are non-violent but not gentle either. K “Kaltė” means “guilt” in Lithuanian. It is also a short debut animation film by Reda Tomingas made in 2013. In addition to this, it is the first and the only Lithuanian animation to get into Annecy film festival 2013 competition program. The film tells the story of a lonely fox, who desires to isolate herself from the outer world. She enjoys being tortured by her Guilt. But it’s not easy to be left alone with it as her personal space gets constantly invaded by the surroundings. While the fox’s small world crumbles, the Guilt just observes and continues to torment her hostess with uneasy dreams. The fox has to choose between madness and reconciliation. It is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. It borders Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) to the southwest. Lithuania has an estimated population of 3 million as of 2012, its capital and the largest city is Vilnius. The Lithuanians are Baltic people and the official language, Lithuanian, is one of only two living languages in the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. M The representation of myth is a common theme in Lithuanian animation. Many films are based on myths, fables and legends coming from Lithuanian history. Myths that talk about problems of morality are the simplest and close to popular fables common to all European nations. The main idea in these stories is that a goddess or a god often visits people to guide them in moral questions, but people are not able to recognize her/him. According to these stories, a human should listen to his or her inner voice of harmony and justice, in order to act morally in the presence of a god/goddess, for people do not know when and under what circumstances they are under this gaze. Some scholars stress a mixed Christian and pre-Christian character of these stories. N “Nerutina” (eng. Noroutine) is an audiovisual project, where fantasy, cinematographic creativity, mastership of actors and stop-motion animation are present altogether to form an interesting spectacle, a dreamlike film story. It’s a short film which represents an experimental genre in cinema. The main character of the movie is middle aged office worker Henrikas. His job is an endless routine, repeatable actions, mechanical rhythm. He is a loner, living in his own world of colourful things. These things want to help their owner. They lead Henrikas to a strange, white, long ribbon, which goes through different streets, yards and spaces. It brings Henrikas to joy, freedom of mind and satisfaction to be himself. Noroutine is the first Lithuanian pixilation film. Homer’s epic poem of the warrior king Odysseus, his siege of Troy and his drama-filled return to Ithaca, endures as the greatest tale of adventure and heroism. “Odisėja” is produced by Vilanima studio, Poseidon Film Distributors and BBC Channel 4. It tells a story that will thrill the young and the young at heart. It is a platform where foreign and Lithuanian cartoon artists can meet encouraging an inspiring dialogue of creators from all over the globe. “Tindirindis” is the biggest and the oldest animated film festival in Lithuania. The symbol of the festival is a hazelnut. It is not an ordinary hazelnut but well-groomed by Tindis and Rindis. The best animated films are awarded with a glass nut – each of them is an impressive and unique piece of art. The nut symbolizes the lucid soul of an artist and refers to the secret kept in his heart. Every year the international festival‘s jury is nominating animated short films for the “Anoba“ award. “Tindirindis” 2013 is currently calling for entries to the 11th international animated film festival. Starewitch is regarded as a founder of stop-motion animation, notable as the author of the first puppet-animated film. He also used insects and other animals as protagonists of his films. Starewitch mainly worked independently: he was making character puppets, creating hundreds of face expressions masks for the puppets, writing scripts and creating scene design by himself. Next to animation Starewitch was often invited to work on production of feature films, due to his talent to find creative solutions in situations which required special effects innovations. Due to his mastery Starewitch gained worldwide acknowledgement, received numerous international awards and is valued for his innovative contribution to animation art and film art in general. Z Zenonas Šteinys (1946 - 1997) was a noble Lithuanian artist, animation director and caricaturist. He was a cornerstone figure among different generations of Lithuanian animators. The first film by Zenonas is playful, innovative and breaking the standard of prevailing animation. According to critics Zenonas Šteinys invented a new style of hand-drawn animation and lead the way to Lithuanian independence by using our flag motif in his film. All his films are innovative and different in technique or plot. Zenonas’ animation is patriotic, witty, sometimes biting, at the same time sensitive and empathized.
