Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly responded negatively to recent
news that the National Association of Realtors is considering
razing its Michigan Avenue headquarters building and
replacing it with a large mixed-use development. “As far as
I'm concerned, the project that was described in the paper
last week is not real,” Mr. Reilly (42nd) said at a recent
meeting on another downtown real estate project, according
to ArchitectureChicago PLUS, a local blog that covered the
meeting. The alderman said he would oppose any plan to
remove the Plaza of Americas just south of the Realtors
building, 430 N. Michigan Ave. “It's not for them to tear
down,” he said. “Those are all city easements under there.
And by the way, I would never let them take away the Plaza
of the Americas. It's a very important plaza to a lot of people
in Chicago. So whatever plans they want to develop, I'm all
ears, but they have not come in to share with me.” In an
email, a Realtors spokeswoman said: "Many details of the
project remain to be worked out and the decision to carry out
the development is nowhere near final. The decision by NAR's
board, which was picked up by the media, only enabled
exploration of the project to move forward." A spokeswoman
for Mr. Reilly did not return a call.

Trustwave expands Loop headquarters
Trustwave Holdings Inc. leased an additional 15,000 square feet at 70 W. Madison St.,
increasing the size of its Chicago headquarters by nearly 30 percent. The information security
company, which helps businesses fight cybercrime, will occupy the space by February, bringing
its total footprint in the building to 65,740 square feet, a spokesman confirmed. Trustwave,
whose Chicago office employs about 320 people, leased the space to accommodate future
growth, the spokesman said. Bobby Goodman of Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.
represented the company in the transaction. Trustwave, which has mulled an IPO, has
benefited from increased security threats posed by social media and mobile technologies. It
employs approximately 1,100 people worldwide.
Binny's to expand in Glencoe
The Binny's Beverage Depot chain plans to open a new liquor store in Glencoe. Binny's has
agreed to lease a 13,000-square-foot space in the Hubbard Woods Plaza shopping center, on
Green Bay Road just north of Scott Street, and plans to vacate a smaller store in the same
property, said Michael Binstein, CEO of Skokie-based Gold Standard Enterprises Inc., Binny's
parent company. The new store will open by March, he said. Mr. Binstein also said he plans to
open a store in eastern DuPage County and is scouting sites Downstate and in the Madison,
Wis., market. He is also is considering taking over Dominick's grocery stores slated to go dark
next month. “Some of the Dominick's sites are interesting to us and we're tracking them,” he
said. “Jewel will probably have first choice among the stores that are available. We'll be
waiting for the dust to settle after that. We have no master plan for growth. We just try to be
opportunistic in acquiring stores.”

An unfortunate choice of words by the author of this article to say that Reilly "shot down" the
NAR proposal. What kind of journalism is this? I read Mr. Reilly's statement and came to a
very different conclusion.
