Summer 2011
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As I begin to write this message the weather has improved and we’re about to make up for a slow start to what’s been a relatively bleak summer. I won’t even mention our spring, or lack thereof. Yesterday, I attended the third round of the RBC Canadian Open at Shaughnessy Golf &
Country Club. It was a beautiful day, and a local golfer, Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, finished the day second on the leaderboard.
Over the past couple of years we have all witnessed a slowing economy, and declining stock markets, productivity rates, and employment
rates. Canada has not suffered as much as other countries, such as our neighbours to the south, and certain European countries. Even with our
relatively successful response to this global financial crisis, our consumer and investor confidence has suffered.
In the past, as a direct response to higher rates of unemployment, people generally invested in themselves by taking on additional
training and education. Human Resource professionals are now telling us that this time around, things are slightly different and they are not
seeing the same degree of investment in human capital. The insurance industry in B.C. is exhibiting a different scenario.
As we see on a day to day basis, the insurance industry is in a perpetual state of motion and change. Our industry is always moving
forward, with mergers and acquisitions, financial and organization restructuring. Change is the norm.
I’ve been employed within the insurance industry for over 20 years, starting my career with General Accident as a road adjuster. I had no
Wes Chowen, BA, CIP, CRM
industry experience, and little knowledge of the industry other than the stories I heard from certain friends who worked at Guardian. When’s
the last time you heard the names of Guardian and G.A. in the same sentence? Anyways, I was given a book of bank drafts and a set of car
keys, and was told I would be handling only two new claims each day. “Only two?” I thought; “What a breeze, this job will be a piece of cake.” Little did I understand that two claims per day
also meant 40 claims per month, and over 400 per year.
G.A. was a strong supporter of training and education, as was our branch manager, David Skingsley. The company invested in my future by sending me to extended courses in Atlanta,
Georgia; Fresno, California; and Toronto. G.A. also supported my CIP studies plus numerous industry seminars.
Since then, I’ve worked for insurance companies, brokerages, adjusting firms, and a restoration company. I’ve been employed as an Adjuster, Senior Adjuster, Branch Manager, Vice
President, Regional Vice President (twice), and as a Consultant. I’ve held Level III Adjusters’ License and Level III Brokers’ License.
Each promotion or change involved a rather steep learning curve. The single most useful resource I’ve been able to draw from over the years is my CIP education. This designation, I believe, stands above all others when it comes to general and specific knowledge relating to insurance, and provides skills transferable to many of the jobs available in the insurance industry.
Year over year, IIBC continues to achieve membership growth and student growth. Licensed members are able to start their careers through our GIE program, and then continue to
develop through CIP and ultimately FCIP programs. Our FCIP program has been completely redesigned to meet the leadership challenges facing our industry in the near future. Our Ambassador program continues to draw new professionals to our industry necessary to fill the void left by the vast number of retiring professionals.
Thanks to the tremendous support from our membership, the selfless donation of time by our volunteers, and the devotion of our institute staff, IIBC continues to raise the bar and
continues to grow in spite of the economic and demographic influences that have affected other institutes. Over the past number of years, the Insurance Institute of British Columbia has
been one of the most successful Institute in Canada, and we are held out as a model to other institutes.
What can be more rewarding to a professional than volunteering with such a successful not-for-profit organization, made up of individuals simply trying to give something back to the
industry that has provided them careers? We are always looking for volunteers to instruct courses and seminars, proctor exams, sit on one of our six committees, present as an ambassador
or even do a Rod Stewart impression at our Battle of the Bands charity event. If interested, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and contact one of the staff or council members highlighted
in this newsletter.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Danielle Bolduc, IIBC’s General Manager, for weathering the recent staff and systems changes, and for her years of loyalty and patience in
helping me achieve such an honourable position.
I also want to congratulate Past President Mike Dakin after his inspirational year captaining our ship.
As I finish, I note that Adam Hadwin fell slightly off the pace and finished tied for 4th with a 2 under. Although a spectacular week for the young golfer, he may wish to consider a CIP
education for a time after professional golf. Golf is also a transferable skill in the insurance industry.
I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy the good weather sure to follow.

Academic Division Report “I am a Baby Boomer”
by Pierre Chavigny, CIP, CRM, Vice-President, Academic Division
The past few years of Economic Recovery serve as another reminder as to the importance of education. Employment rates fluctuate as those that cannot find work, return to the
classroom becoming students once again in search of a career that is recession resistant. As we roll into summer this year, the news continues to report on Mergers & Acquisitions,
Strategic Alliances and Equity Partnerships that see Insurers, Brokers, Underwriters, and Independent Adjusting Companies grow their business and compete for their desired percentage of the market share.
Buyers of companies are looking to acquire existing business, contracts and client agreements, Information Technology, and Real Estate. Today, the most important asset acquired
is the ‘talent’ that comes with these deals. The ’talent’ are those incredibly valuable employees who make up the insurance industry workforce. By investing in yourself, in your education, you increase the value of your own personal stock! At IIBC, we continually strive to provide our Membership with as many educational opportunities, in as many locations as
possible, by using new mediums such as online courses and webinars in addition to our in-class courses taught by our wonderful team of instructors.
I am so pleased to report that Jennifer Perry, CHRP, CPM of Hub International Insurance Brokers returns for her third straight year as Education & Career Connections Committee
Chair. This past year, our Ambassadors presented to almost 3000 students in 24 High Schools by doing 83 classroom presentations! We had 13 new Ambassadors join us and we are
always looking for more! Jennifer would like to acknowledge her superb team of volunteers! The Committee also introduced an Instructor’s Achievement Award recognizing those who
taught at least 10 CIP classes. The instructors were recognized for their extra special commitment on March 25th at the Instructors’ Professional day.
We are also very excited to report that Connie Desharnais, CIP, CRM of Gore Mutual Insurance will be returning as Chair of our Okanagan Committee. Connie and her team are
very proud of the CIP Awards Convocation that is now held annually in November. Every year, we see growth in attendance and enrolment in the CIP courses. Connie’s team held its first
seminar in Kamloops this past Winter and will be looking for more opportunities this year! The Okanagan is not only a beautiful place to live, but it is also a source of terrific industry
professionals. Thank you to the Insurers, Brokers, Adjusters and Restoration Firms for sharing their time, employees, and premises to accomplish our goals.
We also welcome Sara Mehrjou, BA, CIP, CRM, ACS who will be chairing the Marketing & Communications Committee for the first time this year. Sara has been volunteering
with the IIBC since 2008. She has been involved as an Instructor, an Ambassador, a Proctor, and as a team member of the Education Committee. Some of Sara’s favourite memories are
doing ambassador presentations, talking to students to encourage them to join our great industry. Sara and her team will be overseeing our marketing and promotional opportunities.
I would like to thank our Committee Chairs in advance for their continued dedication to the IIBC! If you would like to join us as a volunteer, please feel free to contact any of us.
We’ll be happy to show you how you can bring your ideas and enthusiasm to help serve our membership and have a lot of fun along the way! Have a great summer!
Professional Division Report “Volunteer Work is Not Actually Work”
by Jan Brownbridge, BA Hons, FCIP, CRM, Vice-President, Professional Division
Summer is here and so marks the beginning of a new Executive and Council with the Insurance Institute of British Columbia. Last year I had the opportunity to hold the position of
Secretary Treasurer which has now been passed on to Mark Francis, FCIP, ACS of ICBC.
My new position on the Executive this year is 2nd Vice President of the Professional Division which will be an exciting area and includes the Future Directions Committee, the
Seminars Committee and the Events Committee.
The Future Directions Committee welcomes a new Chair this year, Sharon Knotts, CBA, FCIP of AXA Pacific Insurance. This Committee is responsible for current and future
strategies for IIBC.
The Seminars Committee will again be chaired by Helena Dolan, BMath, FCIP, CRM of Intact Insurance Company. The Seminars Committee did an incredible job last year holding
a total of 25 seminars. This year will prove to be another exciting year.
Lynne Vetter, FCIP of Wawanesa Insurance returns to chair the Events Committee which is responsible for organizing the Convocation as well as the always successful Battle of
the Bands Event and the CIP Golf Tournament. These events have been extremely successful in raising the profile of the Insurance Institute of British Columbia and bringing together
the members.
I look forward to working with these individuals and their committees as well as the Executive and Council. Enjoy summer!

2011 CIP Society of BC, Annual Golf Tournament
We held our 9th Annual CIP Society Golf Tournament on May 25th at Hazelmere Golf Course in Surrey. The tournament sold out in a record one week with 144 golfers and 168
guests for dinner.
A special thanks to The Mutual Fire Insurance Company of BC for being our Wine Sponsor again this year! We were able to once again go full force with a wine theme and everyone
enjoyed the featured BC wine from Township 7 Winery in Langley, served at the wine tasting station during the afternoon and with dinner.
We were pleased to present once again a donation to WICC, this year a total of $1220 was generated from the partial proceeds from mulligan sales and hole sponsorships.
Our goal remains to stand out as the premier golf tournament in the industry and we feel we achieved this thanks to our sponsors, our volunteers, and all the golfers! Most importantly, we would like to express our immense gratitude to our industry volunteers that sit on our Events Committee, especially our Golf Tournament Chair, Lee Vevers. Without the
help of everyone who took part, it wouldn’t be possible!
Congratulations to our 1st Place Team!
Dave Ebner, Bob Smith, Darin Nessel, and Lee Vevers.
President 2010-2011 Mike Dakin presents donation cheque of $1220
to Sara Mehrjou and Kellee Irwin of WICC.

Vancouver Island Chapter Report
by Sylvia Bernat, FCIP, CRM, President, Vancouver Island Chapter
The Vancouver Island Chapter had a very successful 2010-2011 term. As the President for the Vancouver Island Chapter, I
feel fortunate and look forward to the opportunity of representing the Island for the 2011-2012 term. Our Vancouver Island
memberships continue to grow each year. This enables our chapter to hold a place on the Board of Governors, which is very
important and a privilege for us. I have been on the committee since 2006 and in that time, I have formed many new friendships and broadened my horizons with new experiences.
Our CIP cocktail events have been successful networking events for those working in or with the insurance industry. We
look forward to offering these at least once a year both in Nanaimo and Victoria and hope to see you there!
This fall, we are offering CIP courses in Victoria in the Fast Track and evening class formats. We would like to successfully
offer CIP Courses in Nanaimo. However, we are pleased to offer again the GIE (General Insurance Essentials) Licensing course
in Nanaimo. The Victoria GIE course is being offered, once again, through Camosun College. If there is a class you would like to
see offered please contact Donna Salahor via email at [email protected].
We had another successful year of seminars. The seminars offered to our members were designed to provide high quality
topics and presenters. From the feedback we received, the responses were very positive on both topics and presenters. We
look forward to bringing you more great seminars with a variety of industry relevant topics that should be appealing to our
audience. Please feel free to share your suggestions for topics with us and we will be glad to see what we can arrange.
On June 22, 2011, we hosted our 5th Annual Vancouver Island CIP Society Golf Tournament at the Cedar Hill Golf Course
in Victoria. We had a great turn out of golfers and dinner guests. Huge thank you to our sponsors as their contributions truly
help make this event the success that it is. Next year’s Golf Tournament will be held on Friday June 22, 2012 at the Cedar Hill
Golf Course so be sure to ‘Save the Date’.
