Calabash PTO Newsletter
Calabash PTO Newsletter October 2015 | www.calabashpto.org Principal's Message Dear Parents, The Calabash community is supportive and encourages our students to do their best. Our parents serve in many capacities at Calabash Charter Academy. They devote hours working with the PTO, committees, and volunteer in our classrooms. Working parents also find ways to support our school in their off hours. All parents want to be a part of their child’s education. The Calabash staff and I certainly appreciate the many hours parents spend at school. We do need to ask that confidentiality be maintained when working in classrooms. Parents will see and hear things that should not be repeated in the neighborhood or on campus. No parent wants to hear their child talked about in the community because they didn’t do well on an assignment or behaved in a certain way in the classroom. I suppose our motto should be “what happens at Calabash stays at Calabash.” Our teachers, students, and I thank you. In addition, we ask that you do not reprimand children publicly or privately. Just think how you might feel if someone did that to your own child. All concerns must be directed to the school staff so please do not feel the need to take matters into your own hands. Having said that…I love having parents volunteer after the morning bell. I ask that parents to be good role models for our students. When we are saying the Pledge of Allegiance during our Monday morning assembly, please pause your conversations and encourage your children to do the same. I have a few additional reminders: Please have your children wear closed toe and closed heel shoes to school. No shoes with high heels or skate wheels. Write your child’s name on the lunch boxes and clothing. Please visit the LOST and FOUND. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity at the end of each month. All volunteers must apply online and provide TB clearance. Please sign-in with the main office before going to the classrooms or on the yard (morning PE). This is especially important in case of an emergency and during our practice drills. During a true emergency, knowing that you have signed-in at the office, we would be looking for you and need to know that you are safe and accounted for. We take our emergency drills very seriously. Please know that I appreciate all of you and all that you do to make Calabash Charter Academy an amazing place. I just want to keep our kids safe. Yours truly, Esther Gillis Principal Calabash Y. E. S. Fund Dear Calabash Families, As this newsletter goes to print, the Y.E.S. Month campaign is not yet over. Still another day for last minute donations to come through. By the time you read this, our class competition winners will have been announced and the winning classrooms will be celebrating. But, really, we all have reason to celebrate. This was the second year of our rebranded Y.E.S. Fund campaign and we’re excited to share that it was once again a tremendous success. Last year our Y.E.S. Fund grossed $52K (a huge increase from previous years when we took in at most ~ $24K). As we approach the end of this year’s Y.E.S. Month drive, we have already grossed over $51K! Teachers were excited about the classroom wishes, parents were eager for their classes to win and the kids loved those red bracelets! The results speak for themselves. It says something about the pride and passion we have for our school that so many parents jumped in to show their financial support. On behalf of all our faculty and students, we thank you! The PTO will spend about $90K this year to support our Science Lab, Computer Lab, Library, YMCA P.E. program, arts programs (K/1 theatre arts, 2nd grade ceramics, 3rd grade keyboarding, 4th/5th grade ballroom dance, etc), field trips, garden and campus improvements. Our Y.E.S. Fund donations will help sustain a large portion of this spend next year, but they don’t get us all the way there. To bridge the gap, the PTO will continue its fundraising efforts via our Online Auction, Fall Festival, Boutiques, Cookie Sales, etc but will scale back our fundraising in 2016 once we’ve achieved our fundraising goal for the 2016/2017 year. Our family events will continue (those are not fundraisers) as will our free Family Movie Nights. On a personal note, it’s incredible to see the continued outpouring of support for our school. I am so proud to be part of the Calabash community. Thank you to all our Y.E.S. donors! Best Regards, Claire Borsheim PTO President Y.E.S.: We Support Calabash!
