ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER WHAT IS Some of ABATE’s accomplishments over the years: Successfully lobbied for legislation that created the Georgia Motor cycle Safety Program (GMSP), our state’s rider education program that is available to all. Lobbied to have legislation passed to modify the existing mandatory helmet law to allow adults age 21 and older freedom of choice as to the wearing of a helmet. Successfully lobbied for legislation leading to the repeal of the Georgia law prohibiting use of speakers or headphones while riding a motorcycle. Fought and stopped legislation introduced in the 1992 Session of the Georgia General Assembly that would have made it illegal for kids age 10 and under to ride as passengers on motorcycles. Established May as “Motorcycle Awareness and You” month through a proclamation signed by the Governor and through resolutions passed by the Senate and House each year. This is an annual effort that raises public awareness of motorcycles. Successfully lobbied legislators to approve increased funding for the Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program, in the amount of $170,000 after the license tag rate was raised on all vehicles to $20. Successfully stopped proposed legislation that would have increased the size of motorcycle tags. Successfully lobbied for handicapped tags for motorcycles without further enabling legislation, by bringing it to the attention of the Department of Revenue that the code section was written in such a way that it was already authorized. Successfully lobbied for antique tags for motorcycles in the 1998 legislative session. Established a 15 District organization that has led to more participation locally, while raising our membership statewide. The more members we have, means the more clout we have at the State Capitol. Sponsor and promote the largest Swap Meet/Bike Show in Georgia, 5 times a year. Successfully forced prosecution of a trucker who, while making an illegal turn, killed fellow motorcyclist Mark Bonner. Successfully lobbied to pass the “Frank-Lee” (ROW) bill to enhance penalties to those who cause death or serious injury to a motorcyclists by failing to yield the right of way. Successfully lobbied to pass the “Tag/Title” bill SB-437 that allows for registration of kit/assembled bikes. Signed by Governor Purdue May 14, 2008. ABATE OF GEORGIA, Inc.? The letters “ABATE” stand for American Bikers Active Toward Education. ABATE is composed of motorcyclists from all areas of the state, from all walks of life, and who ride all makes of bikes. ABATE is not a club, it is a non-partisan politically active organization working on motorcyclist’s rights. We are affiliated with national rights groups like the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). Our main focus is to keep motorcycle legislation in its proper perspective. Many restrictive laws are enacted by uninformed legislators. ABATE’s goal is to keep our lawmakers informed of our members collective position on Motorcycle related legislation. Preventing unfair legislation from becoming law is easier than fighting to get the law repealed. Rider education and public awareness of motorcyclists are goals of ABATE. We are not against the wearing of helmets, and we encourage all riders to ride safely. An informed and educated rider is a safer rider. Helmet laws do nothing to prevent an accident, and a helmet only provides the illusion of safety, while rider education is proven to prevent accidents and save lives. The next few months are critical to ABATE’s existence. We need to clarify a few points with everyone. I know everyone is wondering why they haven’t gotten a paper copy of the newsletter. As explained at the elections and in an email to each DC, we are suffering from major budget constraints due to the insurance. Each DC knows that the districts are to be charged for insurance now. Only 2 district have paid for the insurance. This caused the state to have to pay it and that kept us from being able to publish the newsletter. This is an extremely trying time for today’s economy in the homes of all Americans and in the business world. We cannot buckle to the financial pressure. We must press forward with new ideas and ways to earn an income for ourselves and for our organization. This is every ABATE members company. Each one of you is a vital part of this organization. We all need to band together for our own survival. This cannot be done by one person or one district. I urge you to ask yourselves “What can I do to make this work?” Answer the question to the state. United We Stand Divided We Fall 4 October 2010 ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone Do you know what your comfort zone is? If you are reading this article you care about motorcyclists rights and are interested in what's going on in the motorcycle community but are you willing to step outside of your comfort zone and take the actions needed to secure your future? I love the interworkings of the political process. I earned a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from a top ten school because I wanted to understand my government, its processes and wanted to have an impact on system change. Politics and government are well within the realm of my comfort zone. I get a tingle of excitement and purpose every time I enter the Halls of the Gold Dome or as I sit at my computer and contemplate legislative strategy. But I know not everyone is comfortable with politics and the interworkings of government. I am amazed at how many people I know that will start a conversation with the words. “ Oh I don’t discuss politics” or will complain at length about the current system yet when I ask what they have done to change things declare that they don't vote or state that they can’t make a difference. I wonder if taking the next step is out of their comfort zone so they wait for others to act. I recently experienced stepping out of my comfort zone and it was harder than I anticipated. It has been a hard year economically and my husband and I have had to face hard facts and make tough decisions. We spent the last of our savings, JR has been out of work for over a year and a half, bought a Tractor Trailer and started a trucking business. I enrolled in truck driving school. I realized quickly that just liking to drive and the ability to operate a motorcycle does not qualify one to become a truck driver. For the last 30 years I left things like trailoring the bikes or the interworking of an engine to my husband. Now I had to learn and I had to step far out of my zone. I felt inept, and in over my head. Steering components, suspension, exhaust AIR BRAKES and coupling systems haunted my dreams as I fell exhausted into bed each night after 12-14 hour days studying, driving and backing up the trailer. I was far from perfect and more often than not came home discouraged and frustrated at my inability to master the techniques. But you know it is coming together. It has not been smooth sailing. I have hit brick walls in the form of discrimination, walls of my own feelings of inadequacy and large holes in my general knowledge of mechanics and even the principles of physics. I am not the star student in fact I failed my Driving test ( do you have any idea how hard it is to parallel park a tractor attached to a 53 foot trailer?) What I am trying to say is that I am not giving up. I don’t have to be perfect. I will continue to try until I succeed. I doubt that driving a truck will ever be as comfortable to me as working on legislative strategy or Lobbying but that’s ok. I am doing what I have to do to guarantee my families future. Are you willing to step out of your zone to secure the future of ABATE and retain your rights as a motorcyclist? ABATE of Georgia needs you! Its ok if your not perfect, its ok if you don’t know the nuances of a Bill, its ok if you don’t like calling strangers on the phone or knock on doors for a campaign. Step out of your zone and help guarantee that your rights, our rights as motorcyclists are protected. I promise that no one is going to point a finger at you and say you weren’t good enough. I promise you that every action you take and every step you take will not only help our organization it will help protect our rights as motorcyclists and will make you a better person for having stepped put of your zone. SB 435, also known as the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act, gives law enforcement officials the ability to cite noise pollution violations under the California Vehicle Code, reinforcing a 27-year-old federal regulation that is rarely enforced. NOISE ORDINANCE Although North Hampton, New Hampshire voters approved a noise ordinance in May that prohibits motorcycles without an EPA sticker from being operated or even parked in town, a lawyer for the federal agency has expressed that just because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires a label on all motorcycle mufflers indicating the noise the vehicle produces does not exceed 80 decibels doesn't mean a municipality has the authority to enforce that noise level. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) "The Noise Control Act (NCA), which authorizes EPA to enact noise control regulations, states that 'nothing in this section precludes or denies the right of any state or political subdivision thereof to establish and enforce controls on environmental noise,” CALIFORNIA LAWMAKERS HOPE TO HUSH LOUD PIPES wrote EPA Senior Assistant Regional Counsel Timothy WilliamCalifornia is home to the largest population of motorcyclists in son in an Aug. 31 letter to North Hampton Town Administrator the country, and if legislators have their way, it could also soon be Steve Fournier. "However, neither does it grant localities any adhome to one of the most onerous anti-motorcycle laws in Amerditional authority to control environmental noise beyond that ica. available to them under state and local law." By a bare majority vote of 21-16 on August 30 the state Senate approved SB435 which will make it a crime to operate a motorcycle manufactured after Jan. 1, 2013 that fails to meet federal noise -emission control standards and that all new motorcycles sold after that date must display and maintain compliance labels from the Environmental Protection Agency. A similar bill last session would have required biennial smog checks for emissions violations, but after meeting resistance from bikers’ rights groups it has since been amended to target illegally modified exhaust systems. Supporters of the bill say that many motorcycle owners modify their exhausts to make them louder, but swapping a compliant tailpipe equipped with a catalytic converter for one without emissions controls produces more smogforming pollutants per mile. "The ordinance basically bans motorcycles from the town if they do not have an EPA label on their exhaust system even though the motorcycles comply with the state's noise level limit of 106 decibels," said Seacoast Harley-Davidson in court papers challenging the new law. Even the town’s own legal counsel has indicated the ordinance is unenforceable, saying that the state has already determined the appropriate noise levels for motorcycles and that the town, therefore, does not have the option of creating its own more restrictive noise ordinance. That opinion was clearly reiterated in Williamson's letter on behalf of the EPA. "Thus, neither the NCA nor the regulations in Part 205 (of the EPA code) grant municipalities the authority to enact or enforce ordinances that supersede any limitations on their Opponents of the measure counter that many aftermarket exhausts authority under state law," he wrote. meet federal EPA emissions standards but aren’t labeled, and labeling on stock systems is often difficult to locate, meaning that Town officials decided not to fight the Harley dealer’s request for law-abiding riders could be unfairly ticketed. a preliminary injunction against the enforcement of the noise ordinance. The United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs passed S. 1619, the Livable Communities Act (LCA), on Tuesday, August 3, 2010. LCA establishes a new federal office that would issue grants to develop and implement “livable communities.” The bill passed through the committee with a party line vote; 13 Democrats 14 October 2010 Here is how LCA’s supporters see things as “livable.” They envision halting development of currently undeveloped suburban properties because urban sprawl has spread our cities too thin, and driving or riding by residents who live in suburbs is causing too much pollution and wasting too much gasoline. Instead, they want to mandate that all new developments be in metropolitan areas where people can take mass transit and walk to their jobs, shopping and entertainment. It’s what LCA refers to as “compact development.” LCA would remove lanes of travel from car and motorcycle users and give them to bicyclists and pedestrians. Walking and pedaling are both great, but they don’t pay into the system as it exists. States will no longer have control over their own destinies. If an area of a state or town is declared “unlivable,” no future infrastructure developments would occur. LCA supporters believe the result will be to force Americans out of their cars and off their motorcycles so that they will use less energy and pollute less, all at the demand of the federal government. The MRF believes that reducing traffic lanes would result in more traffic gridlock, actually causing more energy use and pollution. The bottom line is that the choice to operate a motor vehicle should be that of the operator, not Washington DC bureaucrats. LCA both discriminates against and punishes Americans who use vehicles that burn gasoline. ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Chaplain’s Corner Randal Tebeau CMA Evangelist The Big Trip Firm Ground A few years ago my wife and I attended a rally where it rained every day. When we got there it was raining, it rained while we were there and it was raining when we left. I’m not absolutely sure, but it may still be raining there today. It rained and rained but the water never really puddled up at the rally site, even though the ground was saturated. All the tents, bikes, people, everything there was WET! The sun never came out enough to dry anything, except maybe the seat on your bike. This was one time I was glad my wife had suggested a few months back that we get a motel room. If I had waited until the rally there wouldn’t have been an empty room anywhere, everyone was heading for the motels looking for a dry place to sleep and every motel in town was filled to capacity. The rally site was in a beautiful location with pretty green grass covering the entire area. Even thought the grass was pretty, it was a bit deceptive and you found that out when you rode across it. There was about one inch of firm ground sitting on top of not so firm ground. One time I dropped the clutch a little too quick and got through to the slick muddy stuff underneath the pretty surface. I enjoy some slipping and sliding at times, but this time it was somewhat stressful. This time I was on my 800 pound bike and not my dual sport! I’m just glad I had dropped (oops) I mean, let my wife off at the pavilion to get her out of the rain while I went to park the bike. Riding across the terrain was fun, but the real challenge was ahead. I kicked down the side stand, leaned the bike over and hoped the side stand didn’t punch through the pretty surface and sink into the soft stuff underneath. I looked for something to put under the kickstand to help keep this from happening. It is just not a good feeling knowing that your bike could lay over on it’s side like a hippo in a mud hole. Our lives are a lot like that ground. We may look good on the outside, but once you get past that outer shell we all have some problems. When we come under a little pressure we can give way and cave in to things we shouldn’t. The problem is not the pressure that is being applied; it’s the make up of the underlying structure. Every one of us is born with a body full of stuff (sin) that just won’t hold up. The answer is to change what is inside of us. We need to get rid of the sin and ask Jesus to come in and make us what we need to be inside and out. I won’t tell you that the pressures of life will disappear, but I will tell you that once Jesus is in your life you will be filled with the one that can 39 October 2010 stand up to the pressure. Why wait for the world to cave in on you. Ask Jesus to come in and firm up your life. Is It Time For A New House? One of the routes I travel on my way up into north Georgia carries me through a town where I generally take a short break and gas up my bike for the remainder of my trip. During one of these trips I noticed an old house that had caught fire and burned to the point of being a total loss. The next couple of trips the old house was still sitting there in the same sad shape. On a following trip I noticed the old house was completely gone and someone was laying out the foundation for a new house to be built. On each succeeding trip I would look over to see what progress had been made on the new home. This new house was much larger than the old one and you could tell it was going to be a beautiful home. There was no doubt that this house was going to add value to the neighborhood and that it would also make this particular area of town a little nicer looking than in the past. Sometimes change can be a good thing. I was looking forward to seeing the house on my next trip through the area. More than enough time had passed since my last trip and I was certain the home would be complete by now and that it would be a sight to behold! Imagine my surprise when I passed by and couldn’t see the house because a wall had been built around it! It was a little disappointing to say the least. The wall was not ugly, but it didn’t possess anywhere near the beauty of the house that stood behind it. For a while I wondered just what the finished house looked like, but over time I got so used to seeing the wall that I’ve almost forgotten about the house standing behind the wall. Oh well, that’s the way it goes. Here are a few thoughts that came to mind in telling this story. First, is your life like that old house that burnt to the ground? You may have been through some rough times and you feel that all you have left is a pile of ashes and a burnt out old shell of a life. You know there is something more to life than what you have; you just don’t know where to find it. Second, admit that you need to be built into something that will last and that you can’t do it by yourself no matter how hard you have tried. You need the master builder (Jesus) to come in and build a new life for you. Third, ask Jesus in and He will rebuild your old burnt out life into one that is bigger and better than you could ever imagine and one that will last for eternity in Heaven. Fourth and last, don’t hide your new life behind a wall. Let others see what Christ has done for you and let them know that He will do the same for them. Don’t make them wonder about the change in your life, be proud of the new life that Jesus built for you. ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. Not being one to interfere in anyone else’s business, while yet sometimes being observant while my mind is kind of in neutral, I am inspired by things……………………….On July 24th I was fortunate enough to participate in the ‘No Destination Poker Run’ at D1W. The ride was fantastic with views of some of the most beautiful scenery in three (count them: Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama), states! We traveled from Wal-Mart in LaFayette on Hwy 136 West to Trenton, GA then took Hwy 11 North to Hwy 299 to Hwy 41 North at Nick-A-Jack Lake in Tennessee 42 October 2010 across Mt Eagle, TN to SHELBYVILLE, TN TO HUNTSVILLE, AL to SCOTTSBORO, AL to STEVENSON, AL to TRENTON, GA to LaFayette, GA I even saw Cantaloupes 3 for $1.50 that were homegrown by farmers on the side of the road. This ride was some of the most beautiful lake, mountain, hill and farm land that I have ever seen. The houses outside of Shelbyville were astounding! For some reason this ride just plain wore me out! I was so tired that me and ole’ Benji couldn’t even howl at the moon! Sometimes I have to see something many times to grasp an understanding or enlightenment. It was on this ride that I once again was blessed to witness the “flapping of butterfly wings” and how that effect could become a tradition of time and passing of values. I guess that I am entirely too accustomed to Gene and Kathy having Courtney on our rides to realize what I was missing. Perhaps I am too close when Eden has the opportunity to ride with me for me to see. But somehow and for some reason this ride was different. Could it be that I have had to miss so many rides this year? I watched as my brother David Mayes rode with his Grandson. Now I don’t know if the rest of our group made much of an impression on this young lad or not. I am sure that I didn’t, being the way that I am, however, watching these two together it finally became clear. I was witnessing history and most of all tradition in the making. I was fortunate enough to see as the values, knowledge, and respect was past from grandfather to grandson. These two individuals were connected with great love and admiration. This one day may be long forgotten and pass as yet another day in their relationship, but, it has touched my life and will travel forward with me. I have known for many years that we leave a little something behind when we touch the lives of others and we also take something with us when we leave. I want to leave something that is of value, something that has some meaning and that will hopefully be of some use. This ride has had many pay-backs: (1) Some outstandingly scenic saddle time, (2) Opportunity to meet new friends, (3) Good visibility, (4) Great occasion for camaraderie, (5) A pass forward for the promotion of the freedoms that we enjoy. I kind of feel like a kid at Christmas when I get to experience one of these special occasions. It as if I walk away with so many “presents”. On a personal note, many thanks to all of the officers, members and guests who made this ride so special! My advice to the rest of you is to get it out of the garage and wear the saddle out……………. Protect your FREEDOM, JOIN ABATE of GEORGIA Terry L. Simmons ABATE of Georgia District 1 West Co-coordinator I read an Indian prayer where the first few lines read like “O' Great Spirit Whose voice I hear in the winds”. Boy that one hits home. Is it that voice which calms me down when I am troubled and riding along some forgotten country road? Is this the reason that I feel at peace with myself? Perhaps it should be ‘mandatory’ for everyone to ride at least two hours a day? What do you think? Would it make a difference in our society? It certainly would give people who do not ride the opportunity to visit the frustrations of ‘not being seen’ by other drivers! When I was a little younger, I was traveling from Summerville, GA home to Round Pond Road just outside of LaFayette, GA. On this particular day I was wearing my overalls and driving my jeep (black with blue swoosh, grey interior, chrome grill/bumpers, had the bikini top on, and had the tonneau cover on), with the radio playing. Now this was a very fine middle to late Spring afternoon and I was enjoying the ride as much as anyone ever has. Me and this ole’ jeep have lots of memories. I bought it new and it is now almost 18 years old; but back to the story. Ok, I am tooling along Highway 27 and am just approaching the waste treatment plant on the side of the Hwy. About this time I get a growling, rumbling, dinga-ling it’s about time to go feeling in my stomach, gut! There is no where to go, so I very strongly tighten my sphincter muscle to lock the flood gates. In an effort to further strengthen this effort, I turn down the radio! OOWAH, I am a man, I can ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News do this; it is only about 14 more miles home. So much for my leisurely, pleasurable, comfortable, and relaxing ride. As I approach and pass the waste treatment plant for the city of Trion, the odor is very harsh only to throw a little more stress on this day. Anyway, we have an objective. Two hundred yards further down the Hwy and for some unknown reason I sneeze. Until this time I have never realized just how powerful a sneeze could be. But this sneeze caused my muscles to constrict and relax at the same time. My sphincter muscle released, my body voided, and I had instantly made mud in my overalls! All of this happened before I know what was going on! We are not talking about a chocolate oatmeal cookie here; we are talking about one of those California Mud Slides! This was a feeling that I never remember feeling in all of my life and that is a long while. There was no where for me to pull off and clean my self, plus there was nothing to clean myself with. To be honest, I did not what to touch it! I did the only thing that I thought that I could do and that was to drive home, easily get out of the jeep, strip and use the water hose in the yard. Good thing I lived in the country. The next time I get the two second warning; I will pull over and hit the tree line! That first “rumbling feeling” was a lot like our legislative body back in the sixties when they began regulating biker’s rights. The freedoms that they have continually restricted and taken are more like the “releasing of the mud”. Don’t you think that it is time to get out the water hose and get cleaned up. Vote and get your neighbors to vote: We CAN get this MESS CLEANED UP! Protect your FREEDOM, JOIN ABATE of GEORGIA Terry L. Simmons ABATE of Georgia District 1 West Co-coordinator D1W Membership Profile for September 2010 This month’s membership profile is of someone who by sheer nature will stand out in a crowd. It is my pleasure to introduce to you Paul Gard! Paul lives in one of the most picturesque and historically significant small towns in Georgia. People come from all over the world to visit the area and the town of Chickamauga. You can find streets named after generals of the Civil Way, plaques, cannons, an antebellum mansion, a city population of 2,589, and a historic battlefield next door. The Chickamauga Battlefield is the 5,500 acre battlefield scene of the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War, contains numerous monuments, historical tablets, wayside exhibits, and trails. Major points of interest can be reached by following the seven-mile auto tour. What better setting is there to find someone like Paul Gard. Even though he is originally from Indiana, Chickamauga sure does fit him well. After first meeting Paul, it doesn’t take long to see the civic pride and to know that he has performed some public service. Paul comes across as a very intelligent individual (no hallucinations here), who is methodical, self assured, and unwavering. Of course it is a secret and he can’t talk about it because of national security, but Paul was in the Navy and was an Electronics Technician. He met his wife of 29 years through his best friend in the Navy while serving in San Francisco who knew, (I can’t tell you that her name is Sheila, so don’t ask), her through an acquaintance. Their hearts, spirits, and souls entwined. The rest is history (29 years). You got it! It was on blind date that Paul met his splitapart. From what I have learned, it took a little coaxing to get Paul to agree to go so I guess that he owes his friend a lot. Here is a tad bit of information: Paul lived a block or so from US Hwy 27 in Indiana – Now he lives a few blocks from US Hwy 27 in Chickamauga, GA. It sure is a small world. Before joining the Navy, Paul rode a Honda S90 which he left behind after his enlistment. Paul was once stationed in San Francisco where one of his best friends had a 500 Kawasaki and Paul had a car. Well, it worked out that his friend wanted to drive the car most of the time and Paul being the nice person that he is, rode the Kaw. It looks like the freedom of the road was growing in the blood. By the way, Paul also had to “suffer” being stationed in Hawaii for a while. What a sacrifice for your country! 43 October 2010 If you fast forward some years you will now find Paul supporting his lifestyle being a Planner with SI in Chickamauga. This is a position which he has held for many years and it encompasses an enormous amount of detailed work. To list the job responsibilities that he must shoulder would take a lot more space than I have here and would be an article in itself. My hat is off to you. After doing taking a hiatus from the call of the motorcycle call for about 20 years, Paul was bitten once again with the urge to ride. At one time he had a Vespa 125 which he says that he loaded down by himself and it would only run about 45 mph. Still, it got about 80 mpg. His ride of choice now is a 2005 VTX 1300. This bike is nice. What about the apple? Well, as it goes Paul has a son (Clinton) who works as an Emergency Medical Technician for the Walker County Emergency Services. Clinton rides a Honda ST1300 which is just a super sweet bike. Public service, freedom of the road,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,do you see where this leads? Paul’s family is very nice and respectful; they extend friendship and hospitality as ease as a hand shake. Remember me touching on the fact that Paul was very methodical? When we were planning our trip to Washington this year, Paul had researched each possible fuel stop along the way and arranged them by mile marker/exit number. He also included areal photos to investigate the easiest way to mobilize our group after a fuel stop. He, Barry, and Frank did such a good job with the planning of this trip that all I had to do was twist the grip and hold on. Now that another one of his talents has surfaced, I am sure that he will be called upon to use his logistics talents again. Paul is not jsut a fair weather rider either, he rode in the torrential rain last year for the delivery to the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC of the Bears. There was a picture floating around of Paul sitting down and ‘pouring’ water from his boots! We have all been caught out in the rail, but Paul left Dalton in the rain and rode all the way to Greenville where the rain stopped (while we were in the hospital), then continued until we got to our motel. First real ride in the rain and he comments that “it is not so bad”! Everyone’s fingers were turning blue. D2 One of Paul’s most memorial rides was this year when coming back from Washington, DC he chose to ride the Blue Ride Parkway. Although the ride is very scenic, the end of May adds the sparkle of new life. Paul would like to ride up through New England, Vermont, perhaps over to Sturgus; anywhere the road will take him. Paul has been a tremendous asset to D1W and serves in many capacities. He has been instrumental in the growth that we have experienced plus bringing forth new ideas. I greatly appreciate and respect Paul as you will too when you meet him so don’t be timid, shake his hand, listen to what he has to say and you will walk away a better person. He has a living story worth listening to. We are looking forward to a great future with Paul and D1W, not to mention a long lasting friendship! Thank you brother. Until Next Month, Ride Safe… Connie Parry Secretary, District 4E Bikers Dream of Atlanta was started 14 years ago by Don Parkinson. From the beginning the team at Bikers Dream focused on customer service. They have always provided top notch service and performance work in their shop as well as customization and fantastic paint jobs. It wasn’t long before they became known as the “Look Good Go Fast” shop in the Atlanta area. In the beginning Bikers Dream sold used bikes but soon decided to become a dealer for various OEM and custom motorcycle brands such as American IronHorse, Big Dog, Titan and others. They currently are dealers for Big Dog, Indian and Viper motorcycles. These bikes all feature the latest in technology for large displacement engines and 6 speed transmissions. The Indian is a totally new motorcycle with all the modern features and benefits while retaining the look of the gorgeous vintage Indians. Big Dog motorcycles come in a variety of pro-street styles as well as choppers with either 117 or 121 cu. in. engines. Rear tires on these bikes range from 220 to 330 mm and all have six speed Baker transmissions. If you want to have the biggest motor in town, then the Viper Diamondback is for you. With its 152 cu. in. motor it brings new meaning to the phrase “gobs of torque”. Bikers Dream has always carried a complete line of parts, apparel and accessories for all motorcycles. If you need tires, exhaust, luggage or a new helmet give them a call. If you’re having trouble getting to the shop they can ship your parts to your door. As in the beginning, Bikers Dream service department continues to lead the pack with state of the art equipment and service specials. They have expanded to include the servicing of metric bikes. They have always had the latest in Dynamometer equipment and are the only certified S&S tuning center in North Ga. So whatever your needs give them a call, email or stop by! PAST, PRESENT, OR FUTURE D7 Till Next Month BE Safe Cam ABATE Members and supporters, I requested our District 8 Sgt-at-arms to submit this letter to try and explain the lengths that he has went through to correct the record with government authorities concerning a motorcycle crash he had while participating in a sanctioned race on a track. The authorities were going to include this crash in highway statistic data...and they say "statistics don't lie"! Well, they can sure be manipulated....as we know! This is an issue, I must admit, that I had not even considered before. Now I wonder how many of these "racing" crashes are added to our "highway accident" stats? This only shows that our work is never done and that we must be vigilant and diligent to defend our rights. I commend Dave Shockey for the extra lengths he went to set the record straight. D9 D9/2 Joey Brush ABATE 8 August 5, 2010 District 6-2 Mike called the meeting to order, all stood for the pledge and Barry led us in prayer. Yankee brought us up to date legislatively and mentioned that D62 had a tent set up at the Blue Knights Public Safety Awareness Day at Great South HD that was very productive at getting our message out. Noel reported that we have 74 members of which 35 are present along with 6 guests. Paul Kerr informed all that District 6 and 6-2 are having a membership contest to run 6 months starting in September with a cruise to the Caribbean to the winner (trip was donated) and that District 6 will hold a swap meet/yard sale at the Windwalkers clubhouse on September 18th with a $5 admission charge along with a cemetery ride on October 30th. Mike filled everyone in from the board meeting at Angel City on the happenings at the State level. Motion to hold District 6-2 elections at the September meeting was made by Gary and Phyllis 2nd. It's a great place to party with your friends. The ABATE District 7 T-Shirts can now be found at Juniors Junction in Byron. The shirts with the logo are $15 each or you can bring your own shirt in and he will put the logo on for you. Jugheads of Byron is planning an "old motorcycle ride-in" but the date has not been set yet. I will keep you posted whenever I find out more info. We discussed possibly having either a swap meet or horseshoe tournament in the near future. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let Delmar know. We will discuss further at the Sept meeting. Cooper asked me to clarify the fact that the Georgia Riders and the American Patriots are RC's, not MC's. I apparently listed them as MC's by mistake in the previous newsletter. October is District 7's elections for officers. If you want to throw your hat in the ring for any of the positions, please let Delmar know. Delmar mentioned that the state is looking into the possibility of raising the tag fee for motorcycles. Please contact your congressman to find out where they stand on this issue. Elections are just around the corner in November 45 October 2010 ACCIDENT OR CRASH? While the two terms may not mean much of a difference to you, it means a lot to the anti-motorcyclist crowd. I recently had a severe crash on a racetrack while in a sanctioned race. I broke my collarbone and six ribs. Believe it or not, I was only running at about five to ten miles per hour. Thankfully, I am making a good recovery and was back riding my Harley in about four weeks. My consternation began when I was picked up by the EMT’s. I had what was listed as a motorcycle “accident”. This was continued at the emergency room, the trauma center, and my own military doctor. The problem was that an accident is listed with the authorities and is added to the numbers of accidents for the state and the federal government. I was even added to the military numbers for motorcycle accidents, even though I didn’t have the crash on a military post. A crash, on the other hand, is not listed with the authorities and is not considered for inclusion in the motorcycle accident figures. Every time I see my doctor, I have to remind him that it was not an accident, but a crash. It took several phone calls to the county sheriff’s office to get my wreck listed as a crash and a personal visit to the commanding general of the hospital to get it listed as a crash and not an accident. According to Title 40 of the Motor Vehicle and Traffic Laws in Georgia, Article 12, the only listing on the books is for a motor vehicle accident. The word crash does not appear. We cannot let our guard down and let the anti-bikers keep the numbers up wrongly. Remember, if you are involved in a crash while off-roading, racing, or even if your bike falls on you and the authorities have to be called, make sure it is listed as a crash and not an accident. David Shockey ABATE District 8 Sergeant at Arms Addendum: Three months after my crash, I almost bit the “big one” on the street. The dreaded cager making a left turn in front of me nearly ended my motorcycle riding experience. I learned, quickly, that kissing an SUV at 40 miles per hour isn’t fun. Luckily, I had no broken bones, but am really bruised on the inside. The local police were on the scene in just minutes and they were terrific. Unfortunately my bike didn’t fare as well and it will be about 4 to 8 weeks in repair. This, my friends, was an accident and needs to be reported. D1 West SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2010 IS ONE BUSY TIME? Have you heard? Alan and Carrie are now married! Hey guys, may the bell of love and happiness of your joining of the hearts ring through out all of the ages. We love and respect you very much! Hey man,,,,,,,,,, old school,,,,,,,,,,,,District 1 West was awarded the trophy for ‘Most Club Participation’ in the “Rev. Booger” Memorial Poker Run on September 5th of the Labor Day weekend as a benefit to the Stocking Full of Love charity. The charity events began in 1989 as a fund to help provide toys and gifts for some of Walker County’s underpriveledged children, completely from private donations. The first year managed to help about 40 children, according to Dick Dengler, who has helped 47 October 2010 with the event since its inception. In 2009 the total number of children who received toys from the Stocking Full of Love’s “Toy Shop” exceeded 2,000. Hey Bill and Linda up in the Niagara Falls area,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you are missed, loved, and cherished,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with you. You are the best and thanks for touching our lives. Well, by now the Ride for the Children is over and the tally for the number of teddy bears is known. I do know that the week of 09/10/2010, 1,000 bears were ordered for drop shipment to the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC and that the Wholesaler was going to throw in some more that he had. PLUS, at least one of the local churches that is very biker friendly, has gathered about 200 or so (thanks Rocky), as well as other people. This we are told eases the stress for a lot of children. You know that a tour of the facilities along with a narrative list of their most significant accomplishments will probably be provided right? Be prepared,,,,,,it will touch your heart! It is the “Scare on the Square” time again! We have been approached again to participate in the local Halloween Festivities Friday October 29th, and set up a booth to hand out candy to children in the center of town (on the square), in front of the Hale building. That is about center of the street on the WEST side. We will need to be locked and loaded by 4:30pm as children are supposed to start their pilgrimage around 5:00pm. It is a great time to interact with out local residents, children, and merchants (handing out flyers, cards, old newsletters is also a good idea from the past). It is always very rewarding. We will be hosting our Motorcycle Safety Seminar October 16th setting up at 8:00am and starting 9:00am in Dalton. Please contact Frank Chaney for more details at 706-847-7638. The seminar will last until everyone is completed. You never know what and where the silver lining of each cloud will come from. Here we go. Due to circumstances within my control but beyond my ability to ignore (job and money), I within the last couple of months have had to be the only one filling my job position on the third shift. It is good that I received that confidence but a little rough at times without a security blanket. This is a large facility and at times I get my butt handed to me; but I am no quitter. The other night, when we were doing ‘pass down’ (where the leaving shift gives report to the oncoming shift relating to jobs called and etch.) in walked my good friend Jason (I am taking his job on third shift and he has now transferred to first). I hope that you got all of that! Anyway, Jason came in and had someone with him. I was proud to be introduced to his youngest son who recently joined the Navy and this was his first trip back home. I was impressed with the character that this young man had already developed. His eyes were clear with honesty and truth. In his voice you could hear the echo of the love for our country. His name is Tim and it brings comfort knowing that there are people who still have a passion for this land besides those of us who are close to being covered with it. Tim’s older brother and sister both serve honorably in the Navy. My faith in our youth is once again renewed. Perhaps that has become a tradition from Jason and his dad. By the way, Jason is re-enlisting in the Naval Reserve. MANY THANKS, GOD BLESS YOU, and GOD ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News BLESS AMERICA. Over my lifetime I have been privileged to meet many men and women who have served our country through the armed forces. Each and every one of them hold a very special place in my heart and I owe a debt of gratitude that I can never repay. Also, I have had the opportunity to meet, greet, and get to know numerous officials in local civic organizations. All of whom did good works. None of whom sought recognition, praise, or acknowledgement of their deeds. I have never met a great person who would stand up and say look what I have done; look at me. Thank a soldier for your freedom. I grew up in a small mill village which was completely surrounded by a little city. Most of the houses in the village still had an outhouse. Most were three room houses with a front porch that ran the length of two rooms and had two doors to the porch. The houses had no underpinning and there were no air conditioners, no cable tv, no color tvs, three channels of reception on good days and someone had to stand on the porch to turn the antenna pole to ‘tune in reception’. People would ‘walk to town’ and leave their doors and windows open. I remember several times when we would return home to find ‘company’ sitting on our front porch waiting for us to come home for a visit. Also, we would sleep with our doors and windows open! Some of these houses had wells instead of ‘running water’. The floors were slanted toward the center of the house so that water could be dumped on the floor for cleaning/ moping. This way the water could drain out of the house. I remember the houses were so poorly insulated and heated that the windows would freeze on the inside. Most of the houses heated with either coal or wood. The plumbing would freeze in cold weather. I remember water being heated on the coal heater and taking baths in a washtub in the kitchen where another heater was. We did not know that we were poor; we thought that everyone lived that way except for the ones who owned the Bank of LaFayette, or Abney’s Dept. Store, or the Boston Store. They were the rich folks. Have you ever used a tire swing, went swimming in the creek, or rode a pine tree. In case you don’t know; to ride a pine tree you need a rope and a few friends. You climb a young pine tree with the rope in tow and tie it near the top. Throw the other end of the rope down to your friends and let them pull the young pine tree over as far as they can while you hold on. Next, they LET GO! We had a few folks who wound up with a few scratches and bruises (hands slipped), but nothing serious or that a few tears would sooth. Now that is old school and using ingenuity. Speaking of ingenuity, way back in my youth before they had holes in the ground for the outhouses, they used to have trap doors in the back walls under the seat. Under the seat they used to have buckets that would be emptied into barrels periodically and regularly. Now that the picture is painted, let us get back to the story. Winfred and Ben were two brothers who also lived in the village and when they were like 10 & 8 perhaps, they got a hold of some ‘penny’ firecrackers. You know how kids are. Soon it was a war waged between the brothers. Ben was quicker to light and toss than Winfred and as fate would have it, he soon ran out of ammunition so he sought refuge in the outhouse locking the door. What was Winfred to do but go around to the trap door, light a firecracker, and toss it in the bucket. 48 October 2010 BOOM and out comes Ben with brown goo speckled all over his face and upper torso. Ben makes it to the back door screaming, crying, and hollering; their mother comes out and whips Winfred before washing Ben off. Later when they could actually speak of the incident Ben told Winfred that he heard the sizzling in the hole and thought that it was a snake so he looked in to check it out, that was when it blew in his face! Georgia started passing laws against bikers in 1962. Isn’t it about time to wash off all of this and regain our rights? If a government provides legislation that makes decisions for you it is a violation of your rights……………if a government provides legislation that gives you more choices/authority in your life then you would think that it must be an enhancement of your rights. Much Respect, Terry L. Simmons ABATE of GA District 1 West Co-coordinator Long may Old Glory Wave,,,,,and long may this Old Man Ride! Visit us at gabated1w.com We are on Facebook: Abate of Ga. District 1 West or email me at [email protected] D2 September 5th 2010 Greetings from ABATE of GA District 2! This edition of our meeting minutes marks my debut as Secretary for our district. I am taking the reigns from Christy Ayers who has become a very busy lady. I want to first thank her for the awesome job she has done as Secretary and Treasurer for our district, thanks Christy! Our meeting got under way at 2:40PM to allow a few people who were stuck in the Labor Day traffic into Helen to arrive, me included! Brother John led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer. We then moved the meeting onto The Black Pearl’s outdoor seating area to take advantage of the great weather. D2 Coordinator Anthony Love began with a treasury report and we remain quite solvent with a solid balance thanks to the support of our events and generosity of our members. Nathan Purdy has also “hit the ground running” as our new Membership Director, bringing a new member to the meeting. We all welcomed “Larry” and with introductions given, thanked him for joining us! David Norman then gave us an Activities and Legislative update. The new activities include a District 2 Halloween Party at David’s house tentatively set for October 29th. D.J. Wight from the Dawson County Chapter of the Wingman M/C stopped by to tell us of the Mountain Man Challenge ride on October 22nd at the Moonshine Festival in ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News Dawson County, more info can be found on 9339mc.com And we would like to congratulate D.J. for coming in 8th place in the Hoka Hey motorcycle challenge from Key West to Alaska! The 35th Annual Chattahoochee Mountain Fair starts on September 10th and ends on the 18th with a bike show sponsored by Rooster’s Motorcycle Repair, Indian Creek Cycles, War Pony Cycles and our very own David Norman’s Garage Talk radio show that can be heard on WCHM 1490AM on Saturdays at 12:30PM. Check out the events page on davidsgaragetalk.com for more information. David also informed us of California State Senate Bill 435, which will outlaw all aftermarket exhaust pipes. This bill now sits at the governor's desk awaiting signature. Visit http://www.abatega2.org/d2la.htm to find a link to send an email to Governor Scharzenegger voicing your opinion of this bad bill. After a short break, we had our 50-50 drawing and our Door Prize raffle. David also tabled an idea to have the occasional meeting at Lorena’s on route 400 and 53, next to Moto 400 just to make it easier for our western most members to attend a meeting. Our officers for 2009/2010 are as follows: District Coordinator - Anthony Love Treasurer - Open Membership Director – Nathan Purdy Sergeant at Arms - David Wright Activities Director - David Norman Chaplain - Brother John Legislative Director - David Norman Secretary – Bill Mattison Last but not least, my new friend Jennifer, proprietor of the Chevron station in Cleveland GA. had a question for me. She saw the “10% Volunteer” ABATE patch that I proudly wear and quite astutely exclaimed “Why are you just a 10% Volunteer? That doesn’t seem like you’re doing very much…” Although I had a good idea what the 10% of that honor implied, I promised her that I would get the answer, and I did from DC Anthony who said that the patch illustrates that recipients of that honor satisfy a level of involvement in ABATE of GA that only 10% of the general membership does. Hey let’s all get that patch up to an 80% or greater Volunteer Level! Our next meeting will be October 3rd, 2010 at 2:00PM at The Black Pearl Restaurant and Lounge in Helen GA. See you then.
