This summer marked the completion of a three-year project to update the original classroom building that opened in 1961. When classes began in August,
students witnessed new lockers, new lighting, new ceilings, fresh door treatments, and refinished floors. Over the previous two summers, all of the classrooms
had been completely renovated and a new heating and air conditioning system was installed. Not only is the main classroom building now more efficiently
operated, but it is also much more attractive.

High Stakes
in Omaha for
Three Tigers
Omaha is known for great steaks. The stakes
were higher for three Saint Xavier alumni
and the University of Louisville baseball
team in Omaha in 2013. For the second
time in school history, the Cardinals made
it to the College World Series, which is held
annually in Omaha. Only the outstanding
make it to the series, and Louisville proved
that they belonged among the college
baseball elite in 2013. In addition to great
pitching and clutch hitting, the Cards were
in Omaha with behind-the-scenes work of
Jonathan Glass ’09, Chad Deely ’07,
and Matt Hulsman ’06. Jon worked as
Head Equipment Manager, Matt as Video
Coordinator, and Chad as Student Assistant.
All three loved Little League Baseball and
stayed involved with the sport during their
times at St. X. Matt was catcher for the Tiger
team which earned the school’s first state
berth and state semifinal since 1988. In his
senior season, Chad played second base in
the new Tiger Stadium for first-year Head
Coach John Jefferson. Jon was Equipment
Manager for two years, which included the
2008 season when the Tigers finished 33-6.

before returning home in 2013 to attend
U of L. Matt was convinced Chad would
be great with the team and helped get
him involved with some player camps.
Chad was a perfect fit and became the
Student Assistant, focusing on coaching
and player development.
Matt moved on to attend the University
of Louisville where he graduated in 2010.
While he didn’t make the team at open
catcher tryouts, Matt seized the opportunity
to be the Cards’ Student Equipment
Manager. After stints working as Video
Coordinator on the professional level with
the Brewers, Yankees and Reds organizations
(2010–2012), he came back to Louisville as
the Cardinals Video Coordinator – assisting
the team in video and statistical analysis.
Jon had planned to go away to college,
but Justin Amlung ’08, who was pitching
for Louisville at the time, told Jon the team
needed an equipment manager and that he
at least needed to meet the coaches and
check out the opportunity. Impressed with
both the staff and team, Jon immediately
accepted the position. His responsibilities
included managing all of the Louisville
Slugger and Adidas gear and setting up
equipment and machines at team practices,
among other duties.
After St. X, Chad attended Morehead State
and worked as its Equipment Manager
As far as the experience in Omaha, Jon
described it as “everything you dream
about as a kid, and more.” The three former
Tigers enjoyed near-celebrity status from
the thousands of college baseball fans in
Omaha for the series. The season of tough
games and long practices (sometimes 12- to
15-hour days) prepared Matt, Chad, and
Jon to soak in the incredible atmosphere
in Omaha.
This year will bring some changes as Jon
finishes his degree and looks to pursue a
law enforcement career. Matt and Chad have
signed on for another year on the Cardinals
staff. A solid core of returning players and
a highly ranked recruiting class make for
a well-positioned 2014. A run for a
conference title and even a return visit
to Omaha is burning in the eyes of
these Tigers.

Lampton’s
NASA Mission
Only one in 100 satellites around the world is
ever launched because the cost is prohibitive.
That’s going to change for the better if
Pat Lampton ’83, a Chief Engineer with
NASA, is successful in his next big project.
Pat is instrumental in designing low-Earthorbit satellite launch systems that are
affordable, hopefully reducing the cost
of launching a satellite from $30 million
to a mere $250,000.
Although Constellation was later cancelled,
Pat’s research and development has paved the
way for a new launch design for future NASA
vehicles, preparing our country to explore areas
of the solar system that have been thus far out
of reach.
While he spends most of his workday looking
to the future, Pat credits his early inspiration
at St. X with much of his success. Inspired by
Calculus instructor Brother John Wills, who
taught him that nature adheres to simple
mathematical rules, Pat learned that math
helps us to make predictions on what nature
will do. He took that inspiration to Notre
Dame following graduation, where he studied
Aerospace Engineering. Married with four
children, Pat has excelled both professionally
and personally, spending most of his free time
as a youth minister in his local parish
in Huntsville, Ala.

Calling the
Shots
Being on the cutting edge of space exploration
and innovation is nothing new for this
Aerospace Engineer who began his career
with NASA on the shuttle program in
2000. Following the Columbia tragedy in
2003, he served on the Columbia Accident
Investigation Board and was named Deputy
Program Manager for the shuttle’s solid
rocket booster program. His good work led
to 22 more successful shuttle missions.
In 2004, the Bush administration called for
a new program, Constellation, which would
replace the shuttle, and rightly called on Pat
to serve as the Chief Engineer of the booster
stage of the launch vehicle.

Michael Neel ’07 exhibited an interest in
officiating sporting events at age six. Today, he
has transformed that interest into a passion
that is leading him to new sporting-event
heights. Michael’s career began unofficially
at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and continued
throughout his days at St. X and the University
of Kentucky. He earned his first payday as an
umpire in the Beechmont Little League and
continued moving up the ladder refereeing
baseball, football and basketball at the high
school and collegiate levels. He recently finished
officiating his fourth straight Big Blue Madness
and has also worked basketball scrimmages
at both UK and the University of Louisville.
Michael also volunteers his time by officiating
Special Olympic football and basketball games.
The only subject that may compete with
Michael’s passion for officiating is his passion
for his alma mater. He knew from an early
age that he would be attending St. X.
Seeing his father’s love of the Xaverian
education while at Flaget High School,
Michael knew he wanted the same experience.
That passion grew as he watched his brother
Paul ’01 thrive there. Michael credits St. X
for many things, but in particular for giving
him the discipline and structure needed to
properly focus on his future. He loved his
time at the school and demonstrated his
commitment by serving as a tour guide in
the Admissions Office and playing football
for Coach Mike Glaser. He credits Mr. Tom
Simms (Room 111), who was an excellent
mentor at St. X and continues mentoring
even today.
Michael has worked a Toronto Raptors’
training camp and has set a goal to become
an NBA referee. But he acknowledged that
reaching these heights at such a young age
would not have been possible without a
lot of support along the way, particularly
from his mom and dad, his brother Paul,
Mr. Simms, and the entire staff and faculty
at St. X.

F
rom its inception in April 2006, the
St. Joseph of Arimathea Society has
helped lead the way in Louisville
by providing pallbearers and a prayer service
at the burials of the indigent in the community.
Initiated by then Jefferson County Coroner
Ron Holmes ’57 and St. X theology teacher
Ben Kresse, the St. Joseph of Arimathea
Society’s reach would soon extend to
other local Catholic high schools, as well
as Bellarmine University and University of
Louisville. Nearly eight years later, this
program of humble origins is nearing 1,000
burials and has garnered national attention.
The driving force behind this movement is
1974 alumnus Buddy Dumeyer, who has
been with the program from its infancy.
Retiring from the Louisville Police
Department as Captain, Buddy transitioned
into the role of Chief Deputy Coroner and
Coordinator of the Indigent Burial Program.
Charged with the monumental task of
ministering to grieving families, making burial
arrangements, and scheduling members
of the St. Joseph of Arimathea Society for
the prayer services, Buddy “could not have
imagined the success that this program has
had…becoming the benchmark for any and
all burial programs in the country.”
That success is realized daily as Buddy
witnesses young men and women of the
St. Joseph of Arimathea Society provide
“family after family with dignity and respect…
regardless of the person’s struggles in life.”
This effort does not go unnoticed, as he
receives weekly letters from families thanking
the students for their participation.
The son of a military father, Buddy lived all
over the world until he finally found his
home in Louisville at Saint Xavier High
School. He talks about defining moments
in his life and remembers the start of his
junior year, when his mother died from
cancer. “This place, this home was with me
in ways that I never imagined. Brother Giles,
my wrestling coach, taught me how to
deal with challenges and adversity.”
He adds, “When I was a senior, I was
awarded one of 10 leadership awards.
I was in shock. I couldn’t imagine why
they would have selected me. They
saw something in me that I did not
see in myself. Brother Edward, Brother
Conrad, Brother Gregory, Mike Glaser,
Bill Glaser, and Mike Stewart…they
all treated us as men and expected we
conduct our lives as good young men.
It was this belief in me…that gave me
the confidence to join the police
force, to commit to a life
of public service.”
Buddy joins St. X students, St. X teacher Ben Kresse,
and relatives of the deceased at a 2011 burial.
For 40 years, Buddy has been doing just
that, leading with humble confidence as
one of Louisville’s finest public servants.
He graduated from the University of
Louisville with a degree in political science
and embarked on a 27-year career with
the Police Department. Buddy has served
in various capacities, including the SWAT
Team, the Crimes Against Children Unit
and Commander of the Public Integrity Unit.
In each position, Buddy has brought forth
the same compassion and zeal to every
aspect of the job that he extends to everyone
he meets.
Even with all the honors Buddy has
accumulated, he acknowledges that
“without the love and support of my
children, Matt and Sarah, as well as their
mother, Susan, I could have never been
able to fulfill my call to serve.”
The St. Joseph of Arimathea Society has
become a unique cornerstone of the
Louisville community, and, as Buddy looks

Hall of Honors 2013
Saint Xavier’s newest group of graduates
was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Honors
on Friday, October 25 at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel. This annual recognition program
honors alumni who have distinguished
themselves with personal, professional,
or athletic accomplishments. forward to its continued growth, he recalls
the mission of the program and the hopes
he has for the men at St. X.
“Every person we bury has a story to
behold, and often we do not know that
story. But we do know that we gave them
back with the same loving arms that
embraced them when they came into this
world. I had goals and dreams to protect
those in harm’s way, victims or people
that just needed someone to accept them
and love them in life. My years in law
enforcement afforded me countless
opportunities to do that day in and
day out. I hope every young man that
walks our halls will be impacted and
inspired to seize every opportunity, to be
faithful sons and brothers, to leave every
person and every situation better than
he found them regardless of their
profession and call.”

RaShaan Willis Named Honorary ’98 Graduate
The 14th annual Team Shaan Golf Outing
was held August 3 at Oxmoor Country Club,
and this year’s event had all the makings of
pomp and circumstance. Dr. Perry Sangalli
was on hand to present an honorary St. X
diploma for RaShaan Willis to his parents,
Bob and Marita. Shaan’s life was unexpectedly
cut short by an accident in 1997. Since that
tragedy, his friends and family have
coordinated an annual golf outing and
other events to raise money in honor and
memory of Shaan. The Team Shaan
Foundation has contributed more than
$120,000 to Saint Xavier, and these funds
are used to support need-based tuition
assistance scholarships to St. X students.
