inches. After graduation, Mo played football
one year at UK before transferring to Texas
A&M, where he was an All-American. He
was a first-round draft pick for Kansas City
in 1968.
He left professional football in 1973 after
starting a family with his wife, Tish. Together
they have three children, a daughter, Keri,
and two sons, Todd and Ryan, both of
whom graduated from St. X. In those days,
he said, salaries for professional athletes
were less generous, so Mo left the Chiefs
to start Mo Moorman Distributors, Inc.,
in Louisville. He built the company into a
large distributorship, eventually selling the
business to River City Distributing.

Supply
Company: A
Family Legacy
Tonini Church Supply Co. is currently
operating under its fourth generation of
family ownership.
St. X graduates Rick ’71, Bill ’75, and
Joe ’80, have been involved with the
business in various roles since they were
all teenagers, along with sisters, Anne,
Barbara (widow of Chips Cronen ’67),
and Joan. According to the company website,
their great-grandfather, Ferdinand Tonini,
emigrated from Switzerland to Louisville in
1875 and established a book and stationery
store specializing in religious articles on
Green Street (now Liberty Street) in 1883.
On his son’s 21st birthday, Ferdinand
changed the name of the store to “F. Tonini
and Son”– establishing the legacy. Business
Nicknamed “Mighty Mo,” Maurice
Moorman ’63, will be inducted into the
Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame in June.
Only the second Tiger to receive this
prestigious honor, Moorman played six
seasons, from 1968–1973, with the
Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive guard.
The highlight of his professional career
came in 1969, when he starred in the
Chief’s AFL-NFL Championship win (later
to be known as Super Bowl IV) against
the Minnesota Vikings.
Mo’s football career began at St. X where
he was a member of the 1962 State
Championship team. An all-around athlete,
he was also a champion shot putter, setting
a then St. X record throw of 55 feet, 10

was strong, and the company relocated
to S. Shelby Street in 1904. During an
expansion, the next generation of Tonini’s,
including their father, Elmore ’38, and
uncle, Robert ’43, provided energy and
vision to continue its growth. In 1966, the
name was changed to the current one to
reflect the company’s growth in several
areas of providing religious supplies, as
well as the popularity of their catalog.
Tonini Church Supply Co. moved to its
existing location at 966 Breckenridge Lane
in St. Matthews in 1992. The 25,000-square
foot building houses its retail store,
offices, and warehouse. The business has
customers from all parts of the world as
they supply religious items to churches of
all denominations.
Rick, Bill, and Joe all worked at the store on
a part-time basis during their high school
years and in college. Even while working
in high school, the three made time to stay
involved at St. X. Rick and Joe played football;
Bill ran cross country and track. They forged
strong relationships with coaches, faculty,
classmates, and teammates that still exist
today. The two oldest brothers, Ed ’64 and
Frank ’70, as well as John ’72 opted
out of the family business. Ed is Adjutant
General of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Frank is a supervisor for the City of St.
Matthews Department of Public Works.
John is owner of John Tonini Construction.
The three brothers stated that they
appreciate their St. X education, learning
persistence and perseverance, which have
helped them continue the legacy at Tonini
Church Supply Co. They also note that St. X
influenced the leadership styles they have
today, created a “sense of family” which
they took to the workplace, and has had
a positive impact on the retention of their

employees. Many of the Tonini children
have maintained the St. X legacy – Ed’s
son, David ’94; John’s stepson, Parker
Stodghill ’93; Bill’s sons, Chris ’04 and
Michael ’08; and Barbara Cronen’s sons,
George ’86, Geof ’92, Joe ’97, Jesse ’00
and Giles ’03.
Chris is now working at the store and
learning the ropes to help launch the fifth
generation of family involvement in the
business. A recent business survey showed
that only one in five family businesses
make it past the second generation before
closing or being sold. The legacy of the
Tonini family and their business is a rare
one to behold.

Shortly after graduating from Earlham
College with a degree in theatre, Charles
“Chip” Sommer ’94 headed west to
San Francisco where he worked not only in
theaters, but began working in the Dining
Room at St. Anthony’s – a Foundation in
San Francisco’s Tenderloin District that
assists homeless and low-income residents.
Chip currently manages the Dining Room
and has also continued his work with music
and, most recently, filmmaking.
The Dining Room of Saint Anthony’s
(www.stanthonysf.org ) is open 365 days
a year and serves an average of 2,800
meals daily. The nonprofit offers free food,
clothing, medical care, employment services,
and a drug and alcohol recovery program.
It does all this entirely with private funds.
The Dining Room and its guests inspired
Chip’s first film, Victoria, a documentaryshort about an old piano that sits in the
dining room and the people who play it.
Although it’s out of tune, missing keys, and
has broken pedals, it’s “just like us…she still
has a melody,” one guest explains. Victoria
was shown at over 30 film festivals on three
continents and won many awards, including
the Jimmy Stewart Crystal Heart Award in
the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis.
Chip’s music career began at Earlham where
he joined friends in forming Halifax Pier,
which produced two records and toured
the United States and Europe before
disbanding. Most recently, Chip formed the
Cannery (www.thecannery.net) which has
produced two full-length records and several
smaller releases, in addition to touring parts
of Europe and North America.
Recently, Chip married Tara Creehan of
Sacramento and was back in Kentucky
recording a solo record in a one-room
school house in Hodgenville, that’s soon
to be released. He’s also working to secure
funding for his next film. Chip can be
reached at [email protected].

After graduating from St. X in 1991, Brian
chose the University of Virginia to pursue
a law degree. While taking various
environmental science courses and following
field work in the Bahamas, he decided to
follow a different route with his education.
He obtained a Master’s in Environmental
Science from UVA, then a Ph.D. from Brown
University in Ecology and Environmental
Biology. It turned out to be a smart move.
Brian has received the CAREER Award
from the National Science Foundation
(the most prestigious award given to young
investigators) and more than $3 million
in research grants. He has become
internationally known for his theorychallenging research on coral reefs, salt
marshes, and, more recently, how alligators
can thrive in marine ecosystems.

As an associate professor at the University
of Florida, Brian has also become a fan
of a different kind of Gator since his move
to Gainesville in the early 2000s. He has
witnessed back-to-back national
basketball championships and two football
championships by the Gator athletic teams.
Although his professional career has taken
him down South, his heart still lies in
Louisville. “I would move back in a second

hen I visited with Dan Mason ‘69
recently, he said, “I am fortunate
to work for the best broadcasting
company in the world. It just doesn’t get any
better than CBS.” Now you might expect
the president of CBS Radio to be a good
“company man” and make such a statement,
but Mason really and truly feels this way.
Sitting in his Manhattan Office, it was easy
for me to see he is so unassuming yet fully
in control of his life and career. Mason is at
CBS for the second time. He left the company
in 2002 to “step back a bit” while continuing
to consult with CBS. He established an
international radio consultancy which
allowed him to travel to several European
countries and learn about the many
differences in the industry on the
international level. In 2007, CBS made
Mason an offer that he couldn’t refuse. The
entire landscape had changed in that fiveyear window, and digital broadcasting was
no longer a possibility but a reality. Mason’s
leadership and vision had been tapped to
guide CBS through this new landscape.
During a similar trip to Baltimore, I had the
chance to meet with Larry Patrick ‘67,
managing partner of his own firm, Patrick
Communications. When I shared details
on other east coast alumni and their many
professional activities, I learned that Dan
Mason and Larry Patrick had a professional
relationship. Said Patrick, “Dan Mason has
revolutionized the radio business over the
last several years through his emphasis on
digital and streaming media, as well as his
focus on the core on-air product. He has
demonstrated exceptional leadership in his
various roles and is one of the most
important executives in radio today.”
Further, Patrick says, “I am proud to call
Dan a friend and great St. X alum.
Radio has been his passion since at least the
eighth grade at St. Rita in south Louisville.
Mason, who was known as Dan Masden
while at St. X and later changed his name
professionally, would listen to the radio
contest opportunities and won so often
that the WKLO broadcaster said that he
was no longer eligible. He began his
unofficial career during high school when
WKLO allowed each high school to have
a reporter call in with the school news. He
continued his passion in a more formal role
during his college years at Eastern Kentucky
University. As the color analyst for the
basketball broadcasts, he traveled with the
team and offered many unique experiences.
About St. X, Mason recalls “From the
moment you walk into the building, the
expectations are there. The bar is raised.
A new standard is set.” The school’s
approach to achieve and never accept
mediocrity has stayed with Dan throughout
his professional career. Today, Mason is a big
believer in Catholic Education and credits
his ethical foundation to his time at St. X.
As most alumni can attest, you don’t totally
value the St. X culture and the education
provided by the Xaverian Brothers until
much later in life, but it is a key component
to the future of each graduate.
His career has included stints in St. Louis,
Kansas City, Louisville, Atlanta, Houston,
Washington and New York. During the
changing geography of his career, Mason
recognizes that New York is one of the
most exciting cities in the world though he
still has a great fondness for Kentucky and
always finds a way to get to a day of racing
at Keeneland.
In today’s radio industry, Mason sees the
new technology creating a “sea of change”
in how one obtains program content. He
reminds us, “the most important attribute
of radio is localism, and it will always be
that way.” The radio industry had to branch
out and provide content in all the forms
we, as consumers, prefer to receive it. As

corporations like CBS Radio recognize this,
the consumers benefit greatly. Mason sees
a number of young professionals in his
daily work, and his greatest advice is to
work with enormous passion and energy.
“Companies buy that by the truckload,”
says Mason. “Passion and energy stand out
from the crowd” which makes one’s efforts
to separate themselves from the pack even
more difficult. The passion and energy that
one invests in a career on a daily basis will
be the deciding factor of success regardless
of the field one pursues. “On graduation

says Mason. The effort one puts forth from
that point is what really determines what
one can accomplish.
