Thirty-Nine Years of Sailing! 1973-2012 May 2012 Volume 39, Number 6 th The 39 year of NSA Bill Erwin, Commodore Show. We had a good turn out in NSA members that volunteered to help man the booth. Chuck and I thank you for all your hard work. We have eight new members or past members that have decided to rejoin this year. They are: Klaus & Linda Hoog – Boat Name: TOSCA Dick & Margi McIntosh – Boat Name: Sails Call Ken & Carol Small – Newsletter members John & Jennifer Foley – Boat Name: Earendil The NSA has twenty-six (26) Patron and Corporate members this year. Please let these members know you appreciate their support to our club and patronize their businesses as often as you can. Paul & Jill Cafolla – Boat name: Tom Cat Dale & Merna Hartwig – Boat Name: Someday James & Ashley Taylor – Boat name: DeLaney Peter Crawford & Katherine Smart – Boat Name: C-Horse As we meet these new members please introduce yourself and welcome them to the Neuse Sailing Association. I would like to extend appreciation from the club to Jennifer Gay and Natalie Lovelace for arranging the Easter egg and beverage hunt on our recent cruise to River Dunes. They brought a lot of excitement to the Easter Cruise and had numerous children and adults hunting for eggs and other items around the marina. Thank You Jennifer and Natalie, I hope you enjoyed the Easter egg hunt as much as the children and adults. Thank You to Vice Commodore of Cruising Chuck Gordon for planning and making the Easter Cruise a successful trip. I’m sure we will be hearing from Chuck about club events for May. The Oriental Boat Show was very successful for the NSA. We had a lot of traffic, talked with a lot of people and passed out many brochures to people interested in the NSA. We had two new members join at the Boat Show a yacht member and patron member. We sold NSA shirts and other merchandise to people attending the Boat I hope to see everyone at the May events planned for the NSA. Bill Erwin S/v Shadow All of our Patrons and Corporate Members can be found on our website: www.neusesailingassociation.org. Click on their business card and visit their sites! A message from your cruising commodore... CRUISING NEWS Chuck Gordon - Vice Commodore of Cruising The month of May has arrived and hopefully the weather will be sunny, breezy and warm! There are 2 cruise activities planned for this month and we hope that you will be able to join in on both. Our 1st cruise will be on May 12th and the plan is to informally race to South River and raft up for an afternoon social. Please bring a dish to share and the club will bring some beverages. The 2nd cruise is the Memorial Day Cruise to Ocracoke and we are hoping for a huge crowd just like last year (more on Ocracoke in Cruise Captains Ros and Howard Cheetham’s article). Many thanks go to Easter Cruise Captains Kay and Bruce Neuchterlien for arranging our Easter Cruise and keeping everyone notified of the change of venue. Due to the rain and strong North winds the plans to go to West Bay had to be changed. Our destination was a wonderful Saturday morning sail to River Dunes and a fun afternoon of socializing. We had a turnout of 10 boats including 7 young people (Larissa, Devon and Abby from s/v Knot Happy; Jordon and Donovan from s/v Hemisphere; Natalie from s/v Trio and Jennifer from s/v Opus). Jennifer and Natalie have agreed to organizing “youth” activities on various cruises this year and their 1st event was an Easter Egg hunt which was a great success. Please see their article in this edition. Cruise Captains Kay and Bruce set up an Easter Egg coloring area which was great fun too! Thanks to Kay and Bruce for all their help. For our May 12th “ day cruise” our Vice Commodores of Youth Cruising Activities, Jennifer and Natalie, are planning to have kayaks for an afternoon paddle. I have 2 that I’m planning to bring but it would be very helpful to know how many young folks we might have so that we have enough kayaks. I’ll be sending emails out the week of May 6th with more information but if you have already decided to attend please let me know ([email protected]). The Weeklong trip to Edenton will be here soon (June 16 – 23) and if you are interested in going please let us know. Mary and Howard Congleton are Cruise Captains for this event so if you have any questions or want to sign up to go please let them know (we have 10 boats signed up) [email protected] and me [email protected] (if you copy both of us we can check our list against each other’s). It will be a great trip so come along. More information will be emailed in the next few weeks. Looking forward to seeing you soon and if you want to volunteer to help with any of our cruises or have children who would like to help please contact me. Our club becomes stronger with more member participation. We need your help!!! Got Kids? By Jennifer Gay The Easter egg hunt was a big hit with both the kids and adults. For the adults it included a beer hunt and for the kids, tons and tons of eggs. There were five kids other than Natalie and me and I think they all had a great time. We ended the evening with fire in the fire pit and a hot dog roast. For the next event, the raft up in South River on May 12, we are asking for kayaks so the kids can paddle around the boats while the adults socialize. If all of the kids that plan to be there can email me at [email protected] we will try to get enough kayaks for everyone. RACING NEWS... There will be more reminders and updates via email, but if you are not receiving emails from me – send me your address to [email protected]. This is always our most popular cruise of the year! Our allocation of slips at the Anchorage Inn and Marina is already full (and has a waiting list), but don’t let that stop you from joining us. If you sail up early you might get a space at the Parks board docks, or else just find a spot to anchor out. The Anchorage marina has already confirmed reservations directly with the first 12 or so members on the list. Island Dream will leave Oriental No. 1 around 9 am on Friday May 25 and will monitor channels 16 and 69. Feel free to join us on the trip if you wish, however I am sure that some club members will try to leave on Thursday, while others will only manage to leave on Saturday. We look forward to seeing you on the water! The social will be held at the Gazebo at the Anchorage Marina at 16h00 (4pm) on Saturday May 26. Please bring a covered dish to share.
