COMMODORE’S REPORT
Annual Meeting
By now you all should have received your
packets notifying you about the Annual
General Meeting which is scheduled for
Sunday October 7 starting 2:00 PM. This
year our Board members have been very busy
with everything that needed to be put in place as a result of our new
marina development. Such things as entertaining our visiting yacht
clubs, ensuring a successful year of club related and outside events,
to creating new rules and procedures to help govern our club,
getting our insurance up to date, establishing the OOD program,
and finally, implementing a new club computer system. This has
been one of the most productive years that the BOG (Board of
Governors) has had at NERYC. We have had so many people
volunteering to help this year and it shows.
The Annual Meeting is where you have the opportunity to learn
more about what the BOG has achieved on your behalf over the
past year. It also provides a forum where you can ask questions
about the actions and financial status of the club, and where you
participate by ratifying the selection of your new Board members
as well any changes to the club by-laws. I think you will be very
surprised when you hear about everything that we have accomplished this year thanks to the support of our many volunteers.
Labor Day Cruise & Commodore’s Cocktail Party
I have been a member of the club for twelve years and this year’s
Labor Day Cruise and Commodore’s Cocktail Party had to be the
largest cruising event that I can remember. Our host Bryant &
Anne Cruse let us use their beautiful home for the party. There
were at least 75 people that attended. We had plenty of food and
libations and with Bob Cross as the D.J. and the weather being cool
what else could we ask for. I want to thank F/C Roger & Linda
Hughes especially for taxing our members to and from Annapolis
and also Assistant Fleets Robert & Regina Leigh for putting on
such a fantastic event.
Frost Bite Cruise
It’s hard to believe that it is October already. Where did the
summer go? Soon we will be getting our boats out of the water
and ready for winter storage. This has been a very busy summer for
Carl and I. Almost every weekend we had a club event, family
outing, or a special function that we had to attend. Unfortunately
we were only able to attend two of the cruises this year and I am
really looking forward to attending the Frost Bite Cruise in mid-
October 2007
October. This cruise is usually well attended, since the Sassafras
Harbor Marina is located close to the club and this allows members the option of driving instead of taking their boats. No matter
how everyone gets there we always seem to have a good time.
Please plan to attend this last cruising event of the year.
NERYC Staff Cruise
On Monday September 24th Carl and I took twelve members of the
NERYC staff out on our boat for a sunset cruise. It was something
that I wanted to do for our staff members since they have all
worked so hard this past year for the club. We treated our guests
to their choice of sub sandwiches, chips, sodas, wine, and beer for
dinner. We cruised up the North East River and down to Turkey
Point where we anchored out for a couple of hours and watched
the sun set. Some of the younger members of the gang decided to
go swimming even though it was a little cool outside. I think a
good time was had by all and I really enjoyed getting to know our
staff members on a more personal level. I was amazed that some
of our staff had never had the opportunity to get out on our beautiful North East River. It was a great experience for Carl and I to
share our boat with them.
That sums it up for this, my pen ultimate article. I thank you for
your support in anticipation of your attendance at the AGM.

stop halyards from banging against
your mast.
Either secure them to the toe rail & tension or
pull them away from the mast

FROM THE VICE
It’s 4 am on September 26th and I am
not at work but awake because my
internal clock is going haywire! I just
returned from 18 days in Italy and
Greece where Kenny & I drove the
Amalfi coast of southern Italy and then ferried across the
Adriatic Sea to cruise aboard our Catamaran around the
Ionian Islands of western Greece before flying home
from Athens yesterday. It was a phenomenal trip, and I
would have to say was one of the best vacations of my
life. The weather, the people and the cruising conditions
could not have been better. The gods were most
assuredly smiling down upon us.
We have been members of Tradewinds Cruise Club
almost as long as we have been members of NERYC.
The friendships we have made through both are those I
cherish more than any other I have ever had the opportunity to make. Whether it is cruising the Chesapeake
Bay, the Caribbean Sea or the Mediterranean, the type of
people you meet are the most passionate, friendly and
diverse group of people that have become closer to me
than my own family. I always find it remarkable that in
such a short time spent aboard any sailing vessel or
cruiser, the bonds of friendship are forged quicker and
more solidly than in any other area of my life, be it
school, work or community. I feel blessed to be a part of
the boating fraternity.

I has been my great pleasure to share this opportunity to
cruise and sail to ports beyond the Chesapeake Bay over
the last few years with many of my NERYC family, and I
ALL ABOARD!

friends and the Tradewinds
Cruise Club, which currently has 19 catamarans throughout the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. We are planning a few weeks in Belize this winter and hope to sail
the Red Sea next fall and back to the Caribbean in June
for our 15th anniversary. If you have any interest in joining us in the future as our guests or venturing out on your
own, feel free to talk to us about any of the wonderful
destinations.

The Carberry Family Reunites
For those of you who don’t
know, Susan Andrews a.k.a.
“Bird Lady”( Susan is the
founder & caretaker of our
Purple Martins) is P/C David
Andrew’s wife, and also a
Carberry by birth.
During September, the 45
strong Carberry clan arrived
from near and far to celebrate
a reunion of their extended
family, and what better place
for this to take place than on
the NE River aboard the
Bayhound.

FROM THE REAR
Can you believe it! October is here
and that means it’s just a matter of
five weeks that the Commodores
Ball occurs on November 3rd, 2007.
That’s right, once again we herald in
the old Yacht Club Naval traditions
to honor our next Commodore, Lisa Mack.
Invitations for this event should be in the mail this
coming week and don’t hesitate to RSVP for a fine
evening. By now the word has gotten out, our theme
this year is the 1920’s, an era filled with bootlegging,
art deco, mobsters and dancing.
This event will be a sit down “plated” dinner, which
requires you to send in your RSVP to select your entrée
and dessert choices. Our restaurant staff has gone all
out to create a wonderful array of food for both the
Commodores Ball on Saturday, November 3rd and the
Commodores Brunch the next day.
For the Ball this year, we finally got the group
“Hipnotic”, playing music we always wanted, by
musicians traveling all the way from Pasadena, MD.
This is a five piece band with smoking hot talent you
should not miss. Many of these musicians have played
or sat in with some of the biggest names in music and
they are here at NERYC for our Commodores Ball.
Shine your shoes, wax your heels and show up!
As usual, the North East River Yacht Club will have
some of the finest decorating of any Yacht Club in the
Northern Bay. Rene Landan’s floral arrangements and
Gerry Becker’s dance floor wall mural, are sure to be
the highlights of the evening. Bring your cameras, take
pictures and show them to your friends. Better yet,
bring your friends as guests and show off your club.
Changes: “We got changes.” Halloween is coming up
fast and I heard that many costumes were in the
planning stage as early as July. As you know,
Birthday/Anniversary night is typically the second
Friday of the month (October 12th), we won’t touch that
because we have contracted DJ Robert Cross for music
entertainment with Karaoke from 7:30 to 11:30PM.
But, I feel compelled to make the last Friday of the
month, the night where members show up in costume,
celebrating the bacchanalia that takes place prior to the
following weekends Commodores Ball. Heck yea! We
found that we could not get a sponsor to run a Saturday
night Oct 27 Halloween party, so on Friday night,
October 26th, show up in costume at the Burgee Lounge
and amuse your friends on an early All Hallows Eve.
No need to sign up, just show up and hang out. If you
are hungry, the restaurant is open and the bar is well
stocked.
Bulletin update: This is to inform that Roster
changes are still coming in at a rapid pace. You can
contact [email protected] and submit your
cell/home/work phone and address changes with the
complete assurance that you will be listed among an
esteemed group in the Official Club Roster.
The Ladies High Tea, scheduled for October 21st, is a
full-fledged fund raising event chaired by Lyla Roos.
Proceeds of this event are to defray expenses
encountered by NERYC’s Princess in her quest to
become Queen of the Chesapeake. If you see Lyla,
tell her thanks, this is a lot of work for a very noble
cause.
Note on important upcoming events:
The last page of the Waterline will always show the
most current version of the NERYC event calendar. It
is a good idea to print and display it prominently so
that you don’t miss any club events.

FROM THE FLEET TOO
NERYC has certainly had a banner
summer. The new marina has brought
us new members and a new enthusiasm
on the waterfront. Our racers have
continued to represent us in competition
around the Bay by not only participating
but also bringing home several trophies. We have also had
record turnouts for all of the cruises. Our Labor Day Cruise
to Annapolis had 28 boats and 80 members and guests at the
Commodores Reception. Congratulations are due to Lottery
and First Love for their outstanding finishes in the
Annapolis Race Week Regatta held during this cruise.
The season finale for the Fleet Captain, outside of the
banquets, is the Frostbite Cruise scheduled for October 13th
and 14th at the Sassafras Harbor Marina in Georgetown,
Maryland. Again we have a great turnout of boats and
members. The reception on Saturday evening will include
the crowning of a “Chili Cook off Champion” as well as the
“Great Loop Travelogue”. Do not forget to bring your
favorite Chili Dish, $5 and join in the fun. If you cannot
come by boat, but would like to compete and join a great
bunch of people for a fun evening, please let Robert or
myself know and you join us by land. The Marina offers an
indoor meeting room with a kitchen, so don’t be afraid of
the weather. Also, please feel free to bring guests and
prospective members to join us. It will be my honor to have
my 90-year-old mother as a guest at this event. Pauline
Hughes will be traveling from Illinois, so I need all of the
members to cover for me.
Please plan to attend the annual meeting. Our club will only
continue to grow and improve if we have the help,
volunteerism and input from the membership.
The Frost Bite cruise is filling out
(13 Oct); we have at this time 57
members and guests with 24
vessels signed up for this event.
Chili and corn bread is planned for the sharing. John
and Judy Gill of the Sassafras Marina will present
their experiences on the Great Loop. The “Smelling da
Roses Part 1” presentation will cover their cruise from the
Sassafras River on the Northern Chesapeake Bay, up the
Jersey Coast to New York and then on up to Canada and
the Great lakes. Highlighted in the Two J’s presentation
will be three of the boating wonders of North America: The “LADDER LOCKS” at Ottawa, Ont. (Rideau
Waterway), the “PETERBOROUGH LIFT LOCK” in
Peterborough, Ont. and the “MARINE RAILWAY”
at Big Chute, Severn Bridge, Ont. (both of which are
on the Trent-Severn Waterway).
If you are interested in long range cruising and/or
cruise planning, you will not want to miss this presentation. Or, just come out and see some of the most
beautiful boating areas of North America, find out
about their extensive planning, ask questions, and
spend an enjoyable evening.
Remember even if your vessel is already put up for the
winter, you can still drive to the Marina which is in
nearby Georgetown, and share this last boating event
with your friends.

FROM THE RACE COURSE
The greatest Olympic sailor of all
times, Paul Elvstrom once said, "If in
the process of winning you have lost
the respect of your competitors you
have won nothing". So what does this
have to do with the fastest growing sailing program on
the Northern Chesapeake Bay? Well, I believe that as our
racing becomes more competitive, we will become more
conscious of the rules that govern our sport. I am very
aware of it, because during the Fall Series I have been
approached by competitors on several occasions, to get a
ruling on what they believed was an infringement committed by another competitor.
As the Sail Race Committee Chairman, I have no jurisdiction to make a ruling, but as a friend and a fellow
sailor I am always prepared to listen and advise. My
advice, without exception is always the same and never
seems to be popular and I think I know why. I always
recommend that an infringement or perceived infringement should be resolved in the protest room. I believe our
sport is unique in that we do not have umpires, or judges
patrolling the race course, that is entirely our own
responsibility.
You have to know your rules and you have to call your
rights. If someone insists on making the same mistake,
then it is the responsibility of the boat observing the infringement, to lodge a protest, or to live with the consequences. Complaining to other competitors afterwards
does more harm than a properly handled protest. So
apologies to those who were disappointed in me for not
getting involved, but I think those brave souls who did
make it to the protest hearing for the first time, feel a lot
more comfortable and certainly better informed.
The final Region One CBYRA Sanctioned event for the
season, the HDGYC Fall Regatta was sailed on Saturday
September 29 and our sailors continued their dominance.
In Cruising Class, Joe Reynolds and crew on Her Rey
Knot were the only boat to finish. Class A was convincingly won by the Eckmans on Windsprint and the
Lotter crew on Lottery finished in a well deserved
fourth place. PHRF N was won by Bill and Lyla Roos’s
Southern Cross, followed by Dailey Tipton on Blofish,
Charles Paris on Luminous fourth and Bill Cohee on
Free Bird was fifth.

WINTER STORAGE IS NOW
AVAILABLE AT NERYC!
We are now offering winter storage for members - the cost is $750
for the season which runs from November 12th to
March 31st. Please contact me if you are interested and
I’ll send you a winter storage contract.
The 2007 summer season officially ends for mooring
holders on October 31st and for slip holders on
November 11th. Note that water service to the docks will
be turned off on November 1st.
You are reminded that slip and mooring request
forms must be received before the AGM on
October 7th. This includes existing members already in
position. Slip assignment will take place directly after
the AGM and if we do not have your form, your current
slip/mooring will be re-assigned for 2008.
Dock rules are now posted on the Wile bulletin board,
please acquaint your self with them.

FROM YOUR PRINCESS
October...the saddest month of the
year for all boaters as they come to
the realization that end of the boating season is almost upon them. But
as one season ends, another season begins. We may not
have the kind of warmth that allows us to go sailing or
swim in our river, but we do have the kind of warmth
that results from the feeling that we get whenever we
walk into the yacht club: the feeling that this is our
second family, our home away from home. This feeling
is not diminished by the change of the season, but instead strengthened by it. So, don’t forget to stop by the
club during this off-season to enjoy the warmth and
fellowship that our second family provides.
