Commodore’s Report
As the boating season is nearing to
a close, the yachting clubs of the
Chesapeake Bay’s formal season is
about to begin. We at NERYC
have the planning of our black tie
event well underway, and I am sure
RC Roger & Lady Linda Hughes
will wow you all with a ‘stellar spectacle’ where all of
the stars come out and shine down upon us on November 1st as VC Jon Fowler will take over the helm of the
club as commodore with his 1st Lady Lynn.. I hear that it
will be Dwain & Kay Watkins 46th consecutive ball, a
record no one has ever come near to eclipsing. In preparation for ‘the season’, there is still some housework to
attend to. Fall work day is just around the corner on
October 25th, where we once again pull out the rakes,
gloves, power washers, paint brushes etc. and beautify
the clubhouse in late October. The ladies’ garden group
will also be hosting a fall garden day earlier in the
month to cut back the perennials and mulch the beds for
their winter’s nap. Rapper D’ Cubed (a.k.a. Doug Cain)
on D dock will be hosting the second annual Manly
Men’s Lo’ Beer on Sunday October 19th at 1300 hrs to
benefit the princess program , helping to defray the costs
of the princess’ ball gowns, officer escorts, ball tickets
etc. Sail chair Barbi Taylor (a.k.a. Double X Rules) has
also taken on the challenge of D’Cubed and the Manly
Men and has countered with ‘A Hi Time’ dock party for
ladies only, where bubbly and carbs will reign supreme
and all Manly Men (Broken X’ers) shall be banned.
Counter-intelligence sources have revealed to us that
there may be one, not so manly man that is planning to
gain entrance on to A dock to partake of our Ambrosial
Bacchanal by disguising his manhood with a wig and
heels! Let it be known, manly men, you pitiful lot, we
will not be tricked by your masquerade!

October at NERYC is also the scheduled month for
the annual general membership meeting. By the time
you are reading this it will be just days away on Sunday October 5th. We will vote on the incoming officers and board members for the 2009 season and elect
a member at large to the nominating committee from
the floor. Bridge and board members will present
their annual reports and we will also vote on the proposed bylaws revisions and additions.
We will also have the opportunity to welcome back
the fabulous rock n roll band ~~~ {{{{Frequenzy}}}}
~~~ again for our annual Masquerade Madness,
Halloween Happening on October 24th , costumes are
optional but more fun if you do indulge us all! Birthday/Anniversary/New Members night is also scheduled for Friday, October 10th and live entertainment
with DJ/entertainer Ric Taylor scheduled to appear
once again. The final cruise of the season, our
“Frostbite Cruise” to Sassafras Harbour Marina for the
annual Chili/Curry Cook Off is also planned for the
same weekend. Both our sail fleet and power fleets
will make their respective pilgrimages to Annapolis as
well for the Annual Sailboat and Power Boat shows
mid month as well as 2 other invitational races hosted
by sister clubs, the Havre de Grace Regatta on October
4th and the GRF’s Frigid Digit race on same weekend
as our Frostbite cruise…there is so much action
packed into this month that members will be hard
pressed to choose which events to attend!
So dust off your dancin’ shoes, send your party
dresses & tuxedos to the dry cleaners and get ready to
bring on the season in style!

Lynn and I were talking about how
this had to be the fastest year on
record. Where does the time go?
We might have had time to read a
book if it weren’t for all the Club
events, cruising, visiting other Yacht
Clubs, CBYCA meetings and a rare vacation.
We actually managed to sneak away for a mini weekend
vacation and unfortunately caused us to miss the sail
race party this past month. Congratulations to the sail
race program and their efforts toward improving the
program. Every year it gets better and better.
October 25th Volunteer workday is coming up and I sure
hope that everyone can make it down to the Club to help
clean up the Club interior and grounds. We will start at
8:30 AM and work till noon and then finish with a free
lunch. Bring rakes, cleaning supplies, paint brushes,
power washers and anything else that may make a job
easier. John Beardsley and I have put together an
extensive jobs list that we would like to have completed
in time for the upcoming Commodore’s Ball. Your help
is always appreciated for it keeps overhead costs down.
October 5th Annual General Meeting is coming up and
we hope everyone attends to hear how your Club is
doing.
Before I forget, special thanks go out to our Waterline
editor, Sharlene Wilkins, who has done a stellar job editing and producing the Waterline publication. Her e-mail
reminders have been important to keeping us on track
with this great publication.

The Annual Meeting is scheduled
for October 5th at 14:00 hours.
Steve and his staff have organized a
special buffet for after the occasion
to make our lives more enjoyable.
The members of the board will be
presenting a synopsis of the activities for the past year.
This is our opportunity to hear from the board, ask questions about our
direction and vote on the new Board of Governors.
Please attend the meeting and support the dining room.
This year’s Commodore’s Ball will be held on
November 1st beginning at 18:00 hours. As in the past,
we know that the Ball committee and restaurant team
will out do themselves to provide a first class event for
only $75 per person. This is the same price as last year
and lower than any other Commodores Ball on the Bay.
The event marks the ‘changing of the watch’ honoring
our incoming Commodore, Jon Fowler, and our thanking our outgoing Commodore, Lisa Mack. After dinner
and the ceremony, we have secured a great band to
entertain us as we celebrate late into the night. The
entertainment committee, your Rear Commodore and
Lady Linda are hard at work to make this an outstanding
event. This is the only formal club function of the year,
so put on your finery and join us for a great time.

The Labor Day Weekend Cruise
exceeded all expectations for the
Commodore’s Cocktail Party with a
fabulous selection of food and
beverages. Club members enjoyed
strolling through the quaint town of
Rock Hall and enjoying the tour provided by the local
trolley service. We had first time cruisers who informed
F/C they should have been cruising with club before now
that they have experienced the good times shared by all.
The final cruise, Frostbite Chili Cook-off, has many
members showing interest by making reservations for slips
at Sassafras Harbor Marina on the weekend of October 1012. The Chili Cook-off theme will continue with members
entering their chili for judging. If you have not already
done so, please call the marina at 410-275-1144 for your
slip reservation. The Two J’s will follow dinner with part 2
of their loop showing their cruise from the great lakes,
down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, continue
to Ft. Meyers, and transverse the Ockachobee Canal to
Stuart, Florida. For first time cruisers, the Sassafras River
offers beautiful scenery during the fall months with many
colors of autumn visable on both shores. There are mansions owned by the Dupont family as well as the estate
Michael Jackson considered purchasing. There is a restaurant next to the marina for those interested in breakfast
during their visit. Also, for those arriving Friday, there are
two fine dining restaurants within walking distance, the
Granary and Kitty Knight House.
Thanks to the members who have supported the cruise
schedule this year. Everyone had been very helpful in
bringing various food selections for all to share. Without
your participation, we would not have been able to have the
fun shared by all. Special thanks to Assistant Fleet Catains
Steve and Karen Hogan, Russ and Gloria Zehnacker for all
their hard work, and last but not least, a big thank you to
Lady Laura for all her support and mixology expertise in
providing the specialty drinks for all to enjoy.

This will be my last Waterline article as
your dock master as I prepare to turn
over the shed keys and parking space to
the next Dock Master to be determined at
our annual general meeting (AGM).
Several items to pass along to the membership- first, its not
too late to sign up for in water storage - $750 for November
until March 31st is great deal - please contact me if you are
interested. Second, a reminder that all slip holders not doing winter storage need to vacate their slip by November
16th and that we usually turn off the water around Nov. 1st.
Finally, as the season ends please remember to remove all
personal property from the docks and grounds. Items not
removed by the end of November, will be assumed to have
been abandoned and will be disposed of by the club.
Slip and mooring assignment day will take place after the
AGM - if you wish to have a slip or mooring at the club for
next season, please remember to fill out the slip/mooring
request form that was included with the packet. Rates will
be going up approximately 3% for 2009 and the slip/
mooring rates for the coming year will be as follows:

FROM THE RACE COURSE
Can it really be October? The Fall
Sailing Series certainly got off to a slow
start with races cancelled from August
23rd until we could get in our first race
on September 20th and then squeak in
two more on September 27th. Whew!
The 2008 fall series will therefore be remembered for a variety of
reasons.

We didn’t sail all five races (no wind or tropical storms), but
we managed to complete three races to make the series.
We didn’t have much wind, but we managed to shorten courses
and float to finishes.
We didn’t have great weather, but we had the opportunity to
test our foul weather gear and practice our light air sailing techniques.
We had 22 boats entered in 3 competitive classes.
We had new boats competing for the first time ever and we can
expect them to be part of our growing fleet again next year.
We had eight different boats finishing first in the races with
some of the results determined by seconds.
As we returned to the docks after our last race on Saturday, tired,
hungry, thirsty and completely soaked to the bone, there was an
amazing rainbow arched over the yacht club. What a wonderful
welcome back to NERYC for the sailors who never gave up!
With all sailors returning safely to the dock, the party tent beckoned
for us to celebrate another end of series. Drizzle couldn’t damper the
spirits of all in attendance as the grill was started and the keg tapped.
There were plenty of shared goodies to go around and many enjoyed
a picnic feast well into the night which included a bon fire. Thank
you to all for the shared side dishes and to those that assisted with set
up and clean up.
The series results are in and once again they have proved to be
interesting! We have had to take the tie breaking rules further….if
still tied….. in order to determine a winner. Congratulations to all
of our participants and trophy winners! See results following.
While the NERYC sailing series are over, October still brings
several great sailing opportunities for sailors interested in sailing
CBYRA bay events. Of primary interest is the Havre de Grace Fall
Invitational/ John Heffner Memorial Race which is being held on
October 4th with over 10 NERYC boats entered and ready to take the
gold! Glenmar Sailing Association’s Frigid Digit series the weekend
of 10/18 and Baltimore Harbor’s Leukemia Cup on 10/25 also give
sailors some more racing before calling it a season and pulling the
boat for winter.
We are looking forward to the annual Sailing Awards Dinner on November 22nd at 18:00. All members, skippers, crew, friends and family are invited to attend. Mark your calendars – more
information out next month.

The NERYC & Charlestown Colonial Cup Pursuit Race Report
Position
The 2008 Colonial Pursuit Race should be remembered as an
all-round success. Congratulations to the Colonial Cup winner
Bad Mojo, a visiting boat skippered by Glenn Leach. The race
was enjoyed by all 15 competitors, as well as those who
worked hard to make it happen. The simple formula, based on
a zero-cost approach worked well, as did the reverse handicap
system. Everything was donated and thanks go to Bruce and
Barbi Taylor (the tent), the sail race committee (keg and hot
dogs), NERYC Restaurant (Gift Certificates), Lyla-Gail
(hamburgers and salads), North East Liquors in the Walmart
Mall (prizes), and CSC - Computer Sciences Corporation
(prizes).

The racing was much better than we expected from the very
light and variable conditions that prevailed in the morning and
only Whispers managed to find a hole before the start, which
kept Larry and crew in the same spot for several minutes. Unfortunately for the slower boats, the wind built up during the
starting sequence and as a result they did not get the distance
the head start they deserved, but the racing was still fair and
close, with exciting duals at mark roundings. We had at least
three first time racers and it was very rewarding to see them
enjoying their boats to the full. They did not experience any
unnecessary anxiety, and as a result they all promised to be
back again. The event also show-cased our club to an important potential new member, coincidently the race winner, who
was also glad to have received one of the restaurant gift certificates.
The anticipated Charleston River Fest connection did not
materialize as planned and not a single raffle ticket was sold at
the River Fest. For some reason they also elect to come and
drop a string of markers for the fireworks (that normally only
starts six hours later), as we prepare the finish line for the race.
NERYC will have to think carefully about making this situation work in future. I think we have a winning formula and an
event that can stand by itself. It should be promoted as a fun,
yet competitive event for all sailors on the Northern Bay.
As a result of this event our club was able to donate $1,415 to
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

New Membership Promotion
Hello members.
I'm very pleased to welcome two
new members this month. Jim and
Shirley Duckenfield and Jim and
Brenda Peart, both families are
from North East. Also, I am currently preparing to
welcome a new legacy member.
It's almost time to get out the sweaters and coats, and
this reminds me of the warm feelings we always enjoy
when surrounded by our many friends at NERYC.
Don’t let the cooler weather deter you from attending
the great NERYC events planned throughout the winter
season. I encourage all members, most especially those
that are new, to participate in the Fall Work Day. This
is a wonderful opportunity for fellowship, camaraderie
and a great way to get to know other members in an
informal setting. I look forward to seeing you out there
on Oct 25th.
In closing, I encourage you to attend the AGM and cast
your votes on issues important to our club. I thank you
for the opportunity to have served as your membership
chair for the past few months. I have many ideas and
high goals when it comes to mentoring and growing
our membership. With the club and its members best
interest first and foremost, I would truly enjoy the
opportunity to continue to serve, and I assure you that I
will remain dedicated to the cause if elected.
