It’s really heartening to see so many people pitching in around the club on so many levels – some more higher profile than others, but all equally appreciated. Volunteering is a huge part of what makes Armdale “Armdale” – it keeps costs down for us all as well as develops camaraderie among the members. My apologies if I leave anyone out but at the risk of offending someone, I want to name names as far as my memory will allow! Liz had been crew on boats for many years and in 1999 purchased her boat, “Rogue Wave”, a Viking 28 and has not looked back. The club will During the Fort certainly benefit from her Lauderdale to Annapolis delivery: Our wee feather friend knowledge and enthusiasm a long way from anywhere takes a little and we send you our thanks break, Mark MacNeil holding up the catch of day, a 4-inch flying fish who had come for taking this on at the onset the aboard during the night and Stuart Schnare relaxing below. of the racing season. house chair Niels Nielsen 443-3550 (h) [email protected] entertainment chair Pat Noonan 463-1376 (h) [email protected] burgee editor Christine Lindsay 431-8165 (h) [email protected] director sail training Randy Stevens 455-4144 (w) 430-2222 (c) 826-9034 (h) [email protected] past commodore Dennis Harding 477-7785 (h) [email protected] AYC MANAGEMENT photos by Karen Smith ayc manager Linda McEwen 477-4617 [email protected] ARMDALE YACHT CLUB INFORMATION ayc caterer street address 40 Purcell’s Cove Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia mailing address PO Box 22105, Bayers Road Postal Outlet Rocco’s on the Arm Hannah Gibson 477-7650 [email protected] 7071 Bayers Road Halifax, Nova Scotia B3L 4T7 BOAT YARD STAFF phone fax email web site office hours yard foreman Wade Henneberry 477-4153 yard staff Ed Burke, Jim Harris, Stephen Killam & Eric Brymer 2 902 477-4617 902 477-0148 [email protected] www.armdaleyachtclub.ns.ca Monday to Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Thanks for Flag Pole fix A big thank-you to David Sadler and JB for fixing the flag pole out front which was suffering from some rot in the lower portion. Fresh wood has replaced the rotted area and a fresh coat of paint will be added as well, courtesy of Barrie MacLeod. This is a mast from an old Bird Boat that been part of our club for quite some time so we appreciate its preservation. Deck Spruce Up Also you will notice the sprucing up of the deck, stairs, and railing including a scrape and fresh coat of stain. Thanks to volunteers: Gloria and Neil Connors, Grant Kennedy, Lloyd Blagdon, Rosalyn and Barrie MacLeod, Sheila English, Diane Manuel, Janice Cook, Ken Bell and others I may have missed for taking on this one. They would like to thank visiting members of Dartmouth Yacht Club for buying them refreshments on the Sunday they were doing the job, our caterers for providing lunch and Liz Whyte for a lunch and Al Chaddock for drinks on the day of the second coat. Nice to recognize their contribution in a small way. These volunteers have also done other touch ups at the club as well so again, bravo zulu! Again a team effort with both Betty Ann and me out of the country. Dan put up a temporary Soling mast to fly the flags for the occasion as the flag mast was under reconstruction. Munden and his crew handled the food, serving and clean up for the weekend. I would like to thank the sponsors: Doyle Sails, The Binnacle, DRH Canvas, Coachworks, Pusser’s Rum, Brokerage House Financial Group Inc., Connors Diving and Forestry Safety for their generous support. Please support our sponsors in return when you can! Women’s Learn to Sail Seminar The week of June 19-23, there will be five evenings of women’s learn to sail happening in the Arm. This initiative has been growing every year largely due to Randy Stevens and Betty Ann Haliburton - both big proponents of women’s sailing at AYC. This seminar is taught by all volunteers and boats are loaned by the owners. In addition to Betty Ann and Randy, thank you to the other organizers including, Liz Whyte, Janice Ptak, and Vangie Sadler and all of those who loaned their boat and will help teach the course. New Members And Further Thanks We have had lots of support through some difficult times in the past number of weeks. Thanks to the many members who allowed me to bounce things off them and provide advice and perspective when asked. These fine folk include, Past-Commodores Peter Fry, Paul Barr, Ken Bell, Carl Goodwin and Tom Harper as well as Brian Roberts, Paul Taylor, Bill Primeau and, as always, Betty Ann Haliburton and the rest of our committee. Also thank you to those of you who have stopped me in the yard to offer words of encouragement. This can be a very rough ride at times and you wonder why you do it but those of you who remain positive and helpful (with either support or constructive criticism) are appreciated more than I can say. So to all of you in that category, thank you for your support and kind words. We push forward. We did four days and nights at sea, four days in the intra-coastal waterway and 2 days in Chesapeake Bay and got as far as Annapolis, Maryland. It was a wonderful time away and a great journey. Sorry to have missed the IceBreaker and the Opening Weekend – admittedly unfortunate timing – but this is why I joined a yacht club. To sail. I think that’s why we’re all here! Best wishes for a good boating season. Play safe and have fun. During Fleet Banquet: top to bottom, Betty Ann Haliburton and Bob Lee; Cathy Brown, Lynn Defreitas, Tony Defreitas and Murray Brown; Gerard Dunphy and his daughter; Mandy Chapman, D’Arcy Poultney and Liz Whyte; Wayne Blackler, Lexi Blackler and Mark MacNeil. photos by Karen Smith Welcome Dennis Thorne & Associate, G. Dunphy … Friday Night Jam Friday Night Jams Many Friday nights after supper at AYC, there is a jam session in the Commodore’s Room by the fireplace. Members bring their guitars, banjos and voices. If you’re lucky, you may find Miles, Kevin and others making some pretty fine music. Still on most Fridays through the summer. … Karen Smith, AYC Commodore 3 fleet captain sail FLEET CAPTAIN SAIL REPORT elizabeth whyte 2006 iz Whyte here – fleet captain sail for the reminder of 2006. A bit of an intro to let you know who I am… I’ve been a member of AYC since 1999 and own and race a Viking 28, Rogue Wave. I grew up racing in Bedford on my family’s boat and spent many a happy summer in sailing school. I’m a financial consultant with Brokerage House Financial and live here in the Armdale area with my beautiful husky/sheppard, The Bluedog. I would like to thank my predecessor Blair King for getting things started and organizing the earlier events in the spring. I came on board just in time for the AYC Opening Regatta which was a great success thanks to the volunteers, sponsors and participants. I’d like to thank Dan Pride for his invaluable assistance; setting courses, running skipper meetings, getting traffic and weather reports and generally telling me what the heck I was suppose to be doing! We had two classes, A & B, and a total of sixteen boats which was a great turn out considering the difficult spring it’s been for boat preparation. The meals were all fantastic as well as the entertainment; we all danced into the wee hours of the morning and then were back again the next day for great racing and probably the nicest weekend, weather wise, yet this spring! Again, I would like to thank the sponsors and also the volunteers too numerous to mention. Thanks again. These individuals really are the backbone of the club and make these events a success. I’d also like to mention that it is great that the power boaters support the sailing events here at the club with their volunteerism and participation; it makes it a real club event and is appreciated by all the sailing participants. We are looking forward to some great club racing this L Season Events SAILING Wednesday Night Racing Wednesdays @ 6:30pm Everyone welcome! If you don’t have a sail boat and want to crew, come let someone know and we’ll do our best to get you on a boat. Thursday Night Women’s Racing Thursdays @ 6:30pm All female skippers and crews. Competitive but very fun and the wine and dinner afterward at the club is always lovely. Crew still needed. Saturday Race #1 Saturday, July 8th @ 1:00pm. Saturday Race #2: Double Hander Saturday, July 29th @ 1:00pm One skipper, one crew only. Can be a challenge particularly for bigger boats year and hope to attract some new participants along with the regular suspects. I’m pleased to announce that we have a new sponsor for our entire club racing this year! The Binnacle has agreed to sponsor all club racing on Wednesday, and Saturday as well as the women’s races on Thursday. So come out and get on to the race course! There will be great prizes for win, place, and show, as well as some other new categories to be announced on race night, so come on up to the club after the race. There may be a prize for you!!!! The dining room offers great meals after the race and an opportunity to break bread with your crew and fellow racers. If you’re new to racing don’t be shy, come on up to the club and get to know the crowd, and if you need advice there is no shortage of that at the top of the hill! AYC will be hosting the Nova Scotia Women’s Keelboat Championship on July 15 & 16. There will be two days of great racing and of course lots of fun. Tentative plans include wine tasting, rum special, great food, music and dancing! The guys at AYC have always been big supporters of this event and if we play our cards right, we might get on a dance card or two! It should be a fantastic time! Other upcoming area events are NSYA Harbour Race: June 10, BBYC Opener: June 17 & 18, SYC Opener: June 24-25 and Route Halifax July Cruise Saint Pierre: July 9. Looking forward to seeing you all on the water.
