Anna and I are sitting on Lago Maggiore in Italy, with me trying to recover from the trauma of a shopping trip to a village on the shore of the lake called Stressa. With a loose translation I thought it was a rather appropriate name! Internet service is sporadic and expensive over here and that is causing communications problems. The Club over the next few weeks, and the past couple has been run under the capable guidance of Paul Taylor our Vice Commodore. I bailed out the day after the Commodore’s Picnic, that was very well attended by members who appeared to be in good spirits. After I sacrificed the appropriate amount of beef, pork and chicken on the BBQ I tried to talk to as many as possible, and all were excited that we were crawling toward the acquisition of an independent caterer. Contract negotiations took into consideration the guidance provided by a search committee that went to market to identify candidates. The successful candidate was our own David Lafon who emerged successful after an extensive and close competitive process. The Vice Commodore has been our pillar of strength in that project ably assisted by the Rear Commodore, Mary Keddy. While this has been going on, the Nominating Committee has been activated and are in search of people to volunteer for positions on next years Committee of Management (COM). If they approach you it is because you have been recognized as having a required skill set and I would encourage you to give serious consideration to serving. It is demanding, but it is also very rewarding. I can say after my three years on the COM that there has been a culture change in our organization. With few exceptions, members have been helpful on committees and projects and personally I have been treated with much more respect than I think I deserve. People have gone out of their way to offer encouragement, some have accepted some hard decisions in due course and the memberships has come out to meetings in force and have conducted themselves in a manner that made us all proud. We have been over some rough stretches but we are united and determined to make our Club succeed. Be part of it if you can! We will have missed the Poker Run in our absence and that saddens me, it is one of my all time favorite events. If this should get to press before the event, I encourage all senior members to adopt a social member (or members) for a day on the water, a chance to pick up a prize and attend one great party after the event. If I am late with the submission I hope to hear all the stories about it on our return. That’s all for this edition! We are sure to have lots of great stories to share about our Italian adventure upon our return. Ciao for now. See you at the club! Right, Then! We all know that sailors are a superstitious bunch! One idiosyncrasy is the universal dislike for all things left, including left-handed people. Disaster will follow if you step onto a boat with your left foot first. Scottish fishermen in particular consider it extremely bad luck to find a left boot turn up in their trawling nets ... if this happens they spit on the boot and quickly toss it back overboard. The right boot, however, is considered a very positive omen, and a right boot fished out of the drink may be nailed to the mast for the remainder of the voyage in the hopes of bringing good luck to the remainder of the fishing expedition. So all you “south paws” out there, please don’t take it personally if your captain kicks you off his ship for not putting your “right foot forward”! 4 AYC Burgee September 2011 Page 4 NEW AYC MEMBERS! I am very pleased to announce that David Lafon is the successful candidate to become Armdale Yacht Club’s new Caterer, beginning service on Friday, September 16th. David has been with AYC for a couple of years as a Chef and recently has been running the AYC beverage and catering operations so most Club members should already be familiar with his quality service and easy going ways. He has a long history in the food service industry which should serve him well as he begins the new operation. David is the owner and primary operator of this business so you will be seeing a lot of him around the Club over, we hope, a number of years to come. You will also notice some changes in food and beverage personnel as he puts him team in place over the next few weeks. The business is being established as an independent operator serving AYC members on site as well as catering to outside events. The financial risk of the operation is being borne almost entirely by the Caterer, with AYC providing some of the utility functions such as light and heat which are hard to separate between catering and non-catering operations. The initial hours of operation will be as follows: BAR FOOD Monday & Tuesday Closed Closed Wednesday 3PM-9PM Dinner 5PM-9PM (Trial)* Thursday 11AM-9PM Lunch 11AM-2PM Dinner 5PM-8PM Friday 11AM-10PM Lunch 11AM-2PM Dinner 5PM-9PM Saturday 11AM-8PM Special Events TBA Sunday 10AM-6PM Brunch 10AM-2PM *Wednesday nights have not normally been busy, therefore the service will only continue as long as there are sufficient diners to support it. Further modifications may be made in the future as business conditions warrant. Adjacent is a sample Lunch Menu provided by David, to give us an idea of what is to come. The Dinner Menus will be available shortly. Any unused portions of the $200 Food and Beverage Credit that members paid at the beginning of 2011 may be used as part of the catering operation so we encourage you to drop by early and partake of the new service. David is in the process of planning a spectacular food and beverage welcoming event so stay tuned for more information on that one. The Committee of Management would like to sincerely thank Carl Goodwin and Phil Currie and their search committee members (Bettyann Power, Sadie Hardiman, Murray Brown and Pam Barnes) for their hard work in running the process that has resulted in the return of food service to AYC In particular, I would like to recognize Carl, whose initiative at the Special meeting last June spurred the beginning of this process. Please join me in officially welcoming David on board. Drop by to meet him if you have not done so already and more importantly, have a drink and a bite to eat. You will not be disappointed. Everyone came away with a bundle of great memories again this year. I trust you are having a great summer, in spite of how damp it’s been. To be fair, a rainy summer in NS is not uncommon; - and we’re making up for it now with the onset of what appears will be a gorgeous Indian Summer. The only ‘damper’, of course, is that it marks the beginning of the end of another boating season. The annual AYC Poker Run was Saturday, September 10 . 40 boats participated, Rovingnkind took First AND Second place for the highest hand!!! After dinner, the music of “Planet Groove” entertained us, and the party went well into the night. Jeff Nelson, Sail Training Chair has added extra adult “Learn to Sail” programs for September/October, so this is a good time to indulge your temptation and sign up for a program! More details are on the AYC web site at http://armdaleyachtclub.ns.ca/learn_to_sail.htm. Speaking of seasons, it’s been a steady stream of activity for Stuart Schnare, Fleet Captain/Sail since May. In addition to the weekly race series, he organizes all the weekend races. Next is the Harbour Island Classic on September 17. We’re counting on a good turnout again this year. Plans are also in the works to have the AYC race house replaced at the end of our current race season, so if you see construction happening in that area, you’ll know what’s up. This project is generously being sponsored by Gloria and Neil Connors in memory of each of their fathers. Reg Grant, Social Member Representative continues to seek input from all Social Members about how things are going for you at AYC, and you can reach him by e-mail at [email protected]. On the Communications/Marketing and Membership Committees front we’ve updated the AYC Member Directory (on line in the Members Area of the AYC web site). We’re tweaking the ‘Buddy’ system (orientation) to improve the flow with our new member intake process. New member outreach activities (presentations, social media presence, and other ideas) have slowed during the ‘summer vacation’ months of July and August, but will ramp up again in the coming weeks. On Sunday, August 28, AYC members and their guests enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at the Commodore’s Picnic which was organized by Entertainment Chair, Sheila English. In addition to prize presentations of the Commodore’s Cup Races (held the same weekend), music by the talented AYC “Seacocks”, and a tasty BBQ operated by AYC’s volunteer ‘master chefs’, we launched the sale of AYC lapel pins at the event. If you don’t have yours yet, the AYC Bar has a supply for purchase. Only $5.00 each! Grant Kennedy, Fleet Captain/Cruise, and our gracious hosts Donna & Sebastien ensured all planned The AYC Photo Gallery is set up on the AYC web site, and if you have photos you’d like to share please send them to me at [email protected]. We then went on to visit Onset, Marion and Cutty Hunk, then spent three nights in Newport at the NYC where we had dinner with Past Commodore Anderson. We also watched the start for two of the classes in the Trans Atlantic Race. The first boat to cross the line was “Vesper”, a Tripp 52. The breeze was only about 10 knots but “Vesper” completed the course in 6 hrs. 43 minutes. Amazing. We finished third overall in the 47 boat fleet and “Vesper” 4th. I would recommend this race to anyone. We stayed for the prize presentation on July10th, and then we set sail for the Lunenburg Yacht Club where we arrived 48 hrs. later, cleared customs, and headed on to Randy Stevens, skipper Chester. “Ceilidh”, RC, CYC A great trip with a great gang of sailors! (To read more visit Martha’s Vineyard Gazette archive story at http://www.mvgazette.com/article.php?30919 ) Beta Marine Diesel Engines We spent the next three nights in the old whaling town of Mystic Seaport. At Block Island we saw more boats (Vineyard Haven, Woods Hole) and finally spent our last three nights in Edgartown ready to take our place in the Edgartown Yacht Club Martha’s Vineyard Round the Island Race. The hospitality at the EYC was awesome. We all partied pretty hard on the evening of the of July 8th but managed to get to the start line before the 8:00 AM start. The race around Martha`s Vineyard is about 57 nautical miles or 67 statute miles. We were the lowest rated boat in our fleet of 14, but were able to finish first boat for boat. Randy, in addition to receiving the trophy for winning his Class, was also presented a new trophy for the first boat in all non-spinnaker classes. By Lisa Noonan Any sailor worth his salt knows that Davy Jones’ Locker is a euphemism for the sea bottom, and mere mention of the name Davy Jones is enough to strike fear into the heart of the most superstitious of the lot. But why Davy Jones? Where does this come from? As with many ancient stories and myths, it is difficult to trace the tradition back to any one person or event. According to Wikipedia, the first written record is found in “Four Years Voyages of Captain George Roberts” by Daniel Defoe, published in 1726; “Some of Loe's Company said, They would look out some things, and give me along with me when I was going away; but Ruffel told them, they should not, for he would toss them all into Davy Jones Locker if they did.”. A different superstition dissuades sailors from uttering the Devil’s name when at sea for fear of conjuring the being directly, so perhaps Davy Jones was forged as a “nickname” to express certain sentiments without risk of undesirable repercussions. A more prominent quote whic has been coming up in my research is from a tale called “The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle”, a 1751 piece by Tobias Smollett; “By the Lord! Jack, you may say what you wool; but I’ll be damned if it was not Davy Jones himself. I know him by his saucer eyes, his three rows of teeth, his horns and tail, and the blue smoke that came out of his nostrils. What does the blackguard hell’s baby want with me? I’m sure I never committed murder, except in the way of my profession, nor wronged any may whatsomever since I first went to sea ... This same Davy Jones, according to the mythology of sailors, is the flend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep, and is seen in various shapes … . warning the devoted wretch of death and woe.”” I’ve found mention of an English pub owner named David Jones (though I’ve been unable to confirm when he lived ... he may have been mentioned in a 16th century song, “Jones’ Ale is Newe”). This David Jones was notorious for his habit of locking up drunken sailors into a chest in his cellar and passing them onto the next press gang looking for able bodies to serve on board their ships. One theory I like is another linguistic interpretation of “Davy” being an English bastardisation of “Duffy”, a West Indian term for Ghost. Add to this the definition of “locker” as a box in which to hold things of value and the Jonah reference, “He’s gone to Davy Jones’ locker” loosely translates to something resembling “He’s safe with Jonah’s Ghost now”. Not exactly a comforting thought, to be sure, but this does kind of take the edge off facing the death of a loved one, I think. Davy Jones pictured by George Cruikshank in 1832, as described by Tobias Smollett in “The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle”. Finally, I have found a few mentions of a St. David, the Welsh Patron Saint of Sailors. It is upon St. David that Welsh sailors would call for protection when they found themselves in mortal danger. I can’t quite find the direct link to Davy Jones, but maybe this is another example of looking to “soften the blow” of having to deal with the death of a crewmate. However you choose to look at it, Davy Jones’ Locker is certainly one place I have no desire to explore too soon! To that end, happy sailing and stay safe out there ... may St. David smile upon you and yours! This description is perhaps what has led some to speculate that Davy Jones is a play on “Devil Jonah”, 13 AYC Burgee September 2011 Page 13 AYC Poker Run 2011 September 10, 2011 Line-ups at the buffet Krista and friends enjoying the fun onboard “Fox Glove” Sharon and Ralph King Poker Run Winner 1st AND 2nd Place RovingKind Steve & Mark with John Finney ...and yes, it’s as scary as it looks! Kayaking & Other Simple Pleasures By Rob Thomas Maggie and I had just returned from our first sailing trip, on Noonan Knight at Armdale Yacht Club, when the option was offered to try Kayaking the following week at Matt’s Parents place in Sambro. We arrived early at John and Judy Rae’s, our gracious hosts and owners of the kayak I was to occupy. After an initial examination of the craft - a 12 foot double hulled kayak, purpose built for photographers - I put on my life jacket and hopped down out of my wheelchair. After adjusting my legs and getting a feel for the paddle I was gently launched on my way off the beach. The open water to the ocean was stirring heavily with the waves pitching and dropping the front of the kayak into the water. Making it out to the red coast guard buoy Matt and I saw something large float underneath my craft and for a brief moment I wondered hmmm shark hmmm how deep is this? I can’t swim. The moment was brief and the anxiety quickly disappeared as a sense of accomplishment washed over me seeing my empty wheelchair on the shore and Mags watching from the distance. Inspired by captaining my own craft, I turned it around into the calmer water of the coastline and continued to paddle for the next few hours. A year later I found myself back at John and Judy’s taking a rookie kayaker out for their first excursion. Maggie and I try to enjoy all that our province has to offer and through the use of kayaks we have been able to see the coastal landscape from a totally new and breathtaking point of view. With an adventurous spirit the wheelchair seldom does more then slow us down, bring us back one stage so that a plan can be arranged for any access concerns that arise. Often pushing the envelope a long distance walk has found us 20km from home with 15 In July I was nominated by the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA) NS as a Difference Maker for the Rick Hanson Relay. After receiving a medal bearer location in North Sydney on Sept 8th we trained, weight-lifted and generally ate well. The event did not require an extreme level of fitness but we dedicated ourselves to step it up a notch and demand more from ourselves each and every day so that we would feel deserving of the Medal Bearer Position. The Coast to coast event is the 25th anniversary of the man in motion tour and will involve 7000 medal bearers to relay the solid silver pound of metal back to BC from its starting point in NFLD. Now after a great summer of outdoor indulgence and active living I have travelled to Cape Breton and to my own delight have returned to Halifax with my souvenir medallion; sometimes the little things make a big difference. In the Spring we will be buying our own Kayaks and gear but for now thanks to the help of friends were keeping our sneakers wet and oars in the ocean.
