What a wonderful summer we've all enjoyed this year at the Club! As summer 2015 draws to a close, please allow me to say that Deirdre and I have been privileged and honored to serve on the Flag for the past three years, and have especially enjoyed our Commodore year. We have been blessed with so many wonderful experiences and so many new friendships. As our Commodore summer comes to its conclusion, Deirdre and I look forward to enjoying the fun and friendship that we enjoy at the Avalon Yacht Club for many years to come, and plan to continue our involvement in the life of the Club going forward. That said, we've got an extra week of summer in 2015, so let's send out this summer in style! The last weekend of the summer features a few important events: • Proprietary Members Annual Meeting - Saturday, September 5th, 10am: all proprietary members are invited to participate in the annual meeting, which features reports on the state of the Club by the Board of Trustees and the election of flag officers and candidates for Board seats. Candidate biographies and proxy ballots were mailed to member homes earlier in August. We encourage members to attend to cast your vote at the meeting; if you are unable to attend, you may forward your proxy to the Club (c/o Sheila Straub, AYC Secretary). Proxies are available at the Club throughout the week; call the club office or drop by during the week to pick one up or drop one off. • Labor Day Regatta - Sunday, September 6th, 1 pm: calling all sailors! Come and join your sailing buddies for the last regatta of the summer! • End of Summer Party with the Fabulous Greaseband - Sunday, September 6th, 8pm: always the best party on the island each Labor Day weekend, we welcome the Greaseband back to the AYC as we celebrate another awesome summer season at the Club. Also, the evening features the "Changing of the Guard", as our Flag Officers don their new epaulets for the first time, and welcome our new Rear Commodore, Frank Cirii and his wife Mia to the Flag. Note: Dress code for the party is "AYC deck party casual"; please make sure your guests are dressed appropriately and ready for a great time! It should be a terrific Labor Day weekend as we say goodbye to the Summer of 2015, but the fun doesn't end entirely! September is the start of the offseason, but the Grill Room remains open to members on Friday nights through early December, beginning September 11th (please note: there are several Friday weddings scheduled in the dining room this month, but the grill room will be open to members). We've also got some other "shoulder season" fun planned for those members who will be in the "greater Avalon area" during the fall: • Post-season sailing - September Saturdays at 11am: Just because summer's ending, it doesn't mean the sailboat's got to go away just yet! Come out and enjoy some casual sailing with your fellow sailors! Contact the club office for details. • Eagles Tailgate Watch Parties - September 27th; October 11th; and November 22nd: if you're in town, come join your friends to cheer on the Birds; more information on the traditional "cook off" contests will be forthcoming. Saturday 9/5 - Noon to 10 PM The offseason will also be a busy time for our Board of Trustees, the Flag Officers, and the club staff, as prepara(Happy Hour Beer Specials tions for 2016 and beyond will get underway. Specifically, the development of a multi-year strategic plan for the Club will be continuing, and there will be more information coming soon on how you, the members, can get directly from 12-5 PM) involved - we want your input, so keep you eyes peeled for more information. Finally, the 2016 season represents the Sunday 9/6 - Noon to 9 PM 75th anniversary of the Avalon Yacht Club, so this offseason will include planning for special events and activities to (Happy Hour Beer Specials commemorate this diamond anniversary. During the offseason, please keep up to date on developments at the Club through future issues of the Topsider and on the AYC website: www.avalonyachtclub.com. from 12-5 PM) *Following September 6th, the Grill Room will be OPEN FRIDAYS ONLY from 5:30 to 10 PM* In closing, Deirdre and I are immeasurably grateful for all of the support that we have received from the entire membership during our tenure on the Flag, as well as from Brian, Jarrod, Peter, Sean, Helene, Seth, and the rest of the amazing AYC staff (kudos to them for an amazing 2015 season!). It has also been a privilege to work alongside so many talented and dedicated board members, Past Commodores, staff, instructors, parents and volunteers - thank you for all of your hard work on behalf of all of us; you are the lifeblood of the AYC!. We also extend our love and gratitude to our partners on the Flag this year - Jill and Mike Mundenar, and Lisa and Kevin Booth; they've been beside us through thick and thin, and have become very dear friends. We can't wait to see what they have in store for next year! Please call the Club (967-4444) Have a happy, healthy and fun filled off-season!
