Anacapa Yacht Club Mainsheet Volume 2015 Commodores Report: Issue 5 April TINA ROBERSON April symbolizes renewal and AYC has certainly blossomed with energy. This is time of year when the club ramps up with activities. Our Opening Day is on Sunday April 12th. We will have a housekeeping party on Friday April 10th. Pizza will be delivered while we clean and prepare the club for our opening day ceremonies on Sunday. Dominic has organized volunteers to bring breakfast food. We are known for our fantastic brunch and are proud of our members for making such delicious items to share. Bridge members will represent Anacapa Yacht Club at the six other Opening Day Ceremonies in Ventura and Channel Islands Harbor that weekend. Sunday begins with a combined club boat parade at 8:30 a.m. Anacapa Yacht Club’s bridge, board and staff commodores will be aboard Morning Star - Joe and Joanne’s new powerboat a Uniflight 53. Members are welcome to join the parade with your own boat. Details will be sent via email. Registration is at 9 a.m. and breakfast begins at 10 a.m. followed by the ceremony at 11 a.m. Yacht Club attire (blue blazer with white shirts and white pants or skirts) is preferred but not mandatory. Wet Wednesday races are off to a good start. The club fills after the race with enthusiastic racers anticipating the results, crew prizes and the coveted Wet Wednesday trophy mugs. Light winds made for slow sailing for the first races of the series while the sunsets have been some of the best we’ve seen. Thanks to John Koesterer for doing a great job of getting sponsors for our Wet Wednesday series. Sponsors support the club with donations and crew prizes for the racers. Thanks go out to our Race Chairman Gene Beville and the race committee for being out there to start, finish and score the races. The Newport to Ensenada Race starts on Friday April 24th. Members participating in this year’s race are Marshall Murphy on Aya Sophia, Randy Alcorn on Outpatient and Gary Goodman on Alycone. Go AYC! Hank Corcoran and Dave McCue have volunteered travel to Ensenada to host AYC’s hospitality room. Club cruising this month is an island trip coming up on April 25th and 26 th. Cruise Chairman Mike Taylor named Little Scorpions as the anchorage. Watch for any updates in your emails as the date gets closer. The first of our island series races, Anacapa to Port, will be held on May 2 nd followed by our Annual Cinco De Mayo Party and Dinner hosted by Ira Bigeleisen. Thank you to Pete and Gloria for hosting another great St. Patrick’s Day event. The corned beef seemed to taste better than ever. It was a packed house and everyone had a wonderful time. Our Harbor Clean Up day was a success. Twenty or so volunteers came out to help and delivered a heap of trash back to the club. I heard the timing was good as the low tide exposed more of the water’s edge and more trash was able to be reached. Thank you to Vintage Marina and The Rudder Room for partnering with us for a great event. I’m always impressed how our members come together to support the club. When our tired computer decided it had scored its last race Dominic put the word out that we needed a replacement. Members approached Dominic and offered a few dollars to help defray the costs. Before you know it word spread and a new computer was paid for. Thank you all for stepping up and making it happen! Tina Roberson Commodore 2015 Vice Commodores Report: DOMINIC CORTESE The opening day starts the formal year to AYC. Let's make this a great year. With the new computer I have a few things in the idea stage that will make things at AYC fun and enjoyable so stay tuned for them. With a few changes to the members list, the OD schedules need some revising. I'll be asking for help in filling in the missing slots. Thanks to the WW OD support teams. The WW race season seams to have started with a great turnout and as a result the barbi has been busy. Will see you next month, keep your sails full and support the club with your attendance. Dominic Cortese Vice Commodore 2015 Rear Commodores Report: STACY PETERSON Having returned last month from a wonderful sailing trip around French Polynesia, I am reminded that were it not for my relationships at AYC, I would never have experienced that magical adventure. I have made some great friends here and of course fallen in love with racing and sailing in general. I know that other members do these kinds of trips together and I encourage everyone of the members to take these opportunities when presented. It brings us closer to the members we travel with and brings us closer as a club. March was a big month at AYC for racing. We started our Wet Wednesdays and had our annual St. Patrick’s Day Race. March 14th was our St. Patrick’s day race. Winner of the spinnaker fleet was Randy Alcorn on Outpatient. Go Randy! Last Wet Wednesday we had 18 boats participating. That’s a lot of boats for this early in the series. We are now starting the inside the breakwall. This is very exciting and according to our long-time members, something that was done for many years – even when we had 40 boats or more at the start line. Until the north entrance was properly dredged last year, that entrance was too shallow to use for starts. I hope to see you out there! The owners of Yolanda’s Mexican Café restaurant, Rod and Yolanda Gietzen worked in the restaurant industry for several years in the San Fernando Valley prior to opening their own restaurant doors in 1982. From its inception, the Oxnard restaurant was a great success and immediately there was a need to expand the location. Soon customers from nearby Ventura were urging Rod and Yolanda to open another restaurant in their city. In just 2 years of opening the Oxnard location, Yolanda’s of Ventura became a reality and the community has been very supportive ever since. Nineteen years later on September 10, 2001, after many requests from the customers who reside in Camarillo, Yolanda’s of Camarillo was opened and welcomed with open arms. While Camarillo is the smallest unit, we are delighted with the business and the overwhelming community support. The year 2008 turned out to be a very busy for Yolanda’s. Once again the business was expanding and in January 2008 the Yolanda’s of Simi Valley was open for business. In the same year, due to circumstances beyond our control the original Oxnard location had to be closed. On March 30th, 2008 the 2801 South Saviers Road location closed its doors. There was definitely a mixture of emotions for all of us. It was sad to see the original dream shut its doors, but also excitement for the new adventure to begin. After 25 years of success in the Oxnard community there was no question that we would re-open elsewhere. When the opportunity arose to open at the beautiful, new Seabridge Market Place overlooking the harbor, we took it. And on October 6th, 2008 we re-opened the Oxnard location. Over the past 28 years the Gietzens have built enduring relationships with customers, landlords, vendors, government leaders, employees, etc. Most of our workforce consists of long-term employees, some of whom have been with us since day one. We believe the success we’ve enjoyed is a direct result of the quality food, service and atmosphere provided at each of our locations. As a family-orientated establishment, we’re very dedicated to enhancing and contributing to each community we’re part of. Rod and Yolanda are community leaders and give of themselves and their resources to help others. We value our loyal customers and our dedicated staff and as a growing company and we look forward to serving the people of Oxnard, Ventura, Camarillo and Simi Valley.
