North East River Yacht Club Member Newsletter At The ‘Peake’ of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone April 2012 COMMODORE’S REPORT I’m not sure what the award is that is given to the “Playwright of the Year”, but I do know that this year’s award would go to Justine Roecker! “ Murder at Cecilstock” was the best murder mystery production played out at NERYC yet, and that’s saying something because all of the previous years productions have been outstanding! Kudos to Justine and her team of NERYC thespians for a great evenings entertainment. Also thanks to Chef John and April for the preparation and serving of another great meal to accompany the play. If you missed out on this years event, be sure to book early next year as this is always a sold out event. Once again, March was a busy month at the club. Birthday night was well attended, a packed Sail Race Seminar, the Murder Mystery Dinner, a First Aid/CPR class, and several outside events kept our staff hopping. Thanks to all the members who came out during the month to support your clubs events. April will also be a very busy month. In addition to our monthly Birthday Night celebration we also have our annual Open House coming up on April 22nd. Claudia Ferguson, along with her Membership/Marketing team have been hard at work preparing and advertising this event so that we can show off our club to prospective members and hopefully convert them into members! Please mark your calendar, and come out to the club on the 22nd. Word of mouth from current members is our best marketing tool, who knows, you might just be the one to convince that “on the fence” prospect to join our ranks. www.neryc.com Then the end of April brings us our annual “Shakedown Cruise” . More information on this can be found in the Fleet Captains article. May 5th is the clubs 83rd Opening Day Celebration. Make plans now to come to the club for one or all of the weekend’s festivities. Once again, Suzanne Braun has volunteered to publish our Opening Day Booklet. Traditionally the sale of ads in this booklet cover all costs incurred for the weekend. Contact Suzanne to place your ad in this year’s publication. Again, more information on this subject can be found elsewhere is this issue of the Waterline. That’s it for this month, as usual, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions. Now, get on out there and get ready to splash your boat and enjoy another great season of boating on the Bay! Commodore Russ Zehnacker 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 FROM THE VICE FROM MEMBERSHIP Please plan to officially kick off our 2012 season at NERYC by attending our Opening Day ceremonies. We have a DJ booked for your entertainment pleasure at our Margaritaville party which will start at 6 pm on Friday, May 4th. Opening Day, May 5th, starts with a Sail Race at 11 AM, and the pre-ceremony appetizers and cocktails will begin at 2:30 pm. NERYC member, Tom Williams, will provide entertainment before and after the opening ceremony. The official Opening Day Ceremony will start at 4 pm. The Kentucky Derby party starts at 5 pm. Join us for a enjoyable day on the water. For Opening Day, we will be looking for donated appetizers and desserts for our members and visitors to enjoy. In addition, our restaurant team will be cooking up some great dining options for after the ceremony, which you can enjoy in the clubhouse as you watch the Kentucky Derby. Suzanne Braun does an outstanding job of compiling our Opening Day Booklet. When you buy an ad for the booklet, the proceeds are used to offset the costs of our Opening Day festivities. The Brauns have graciously prepared 2 gift baskets that are on display in the Burgee Lounge until opening day. They will be raffled off on opening day, so feel free to make your purchase prior to the event by seeing any member of the restaurant staff. Also, it would be a big help to the restaurant staff if you can make reservations for our “Margaritaville Party” dinner prior to the event so they can be prepared for us ahead of time. Please contact Lady Karen (484-433-4501) if you would like to help with one of the following roles for Opening Day: 1 – coordinate an activity for kids (post ceremony), 2 – act as club event photographer for Margaritaville Party and/or Opening Day, or 3 – help out at the registration desk on Opening Day. Your help would be greatly appreciated! As always, if you have any questions, comments, or recommendations, let me know. V/C Steve Hogan NERYC welcomes two new member Families: Brian and Tracy Fuchs and their son Matthew, and Darrel and Natalie Whyte with their children, Damien and Tamryn. Let’s all make the m feel welcome: help them to make your acquaintance by greeting them in the traditional friendly way and also encourage them to get involved in the many fun activities the club has to offer. The Membership Committee has distributed 200 “Get a Free Drink when buying a meal” coupons to area realtors and insurance companies to help stimulate membership. It was surprising that so many had never been to the club and I am pleased to say they all received the coupons with enthusiasm. We are ready for Open House on April 22nd. I would like to encourage each member to bring a prospective new member along. We are marketing NERYC aggressively but there is no better way to market the fabulous place we have than to have a member bring a guest, especially to Open House. Be sure to visit and like us on FACEBOOK to keep up with NERYC happenings and events. A special “thank you” to Sharlene Wilkins for working with the membership committee to make the website easier for prospective members to use. Claudia Ferguson Membership Chair The 2nd Annual NERYC Garage Sale will be held on Birthday Night, August 10, for members and their friends and family. It will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday August 11 and 12, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please won’t you gather together everything you forgot to bring in last year. We will take whatever you think will sell: boating equipment, tools, dishes, knick knacks, paintings, appliances, dishes, clothing, or whatever. The more members contribute, the more we will make. We will start collecting contributions on Thursday morning and continue to accept them until noon on Sunday. Thanks. Sec. Viv Molloy 10 11 FROM THE REAR April is here! I’m sure with this unseasonably warm weather, you’re well on your way to getting your boat the way you want it. Last month, I was holding my breath and worried that we were going to have all of our good weather delayed by a winter blast but it was unnecessary. Spring has come earlier than expected and we’re all glad. What this really means is that it’s time to put those boats in the water! This will be my first time in six years that I don’t have to get my boat ready for launch, so I’ll be available to help my friends with theirs. Cold will be beer required, of course! We’ve had some great events over the last couple of months: The Raingutter Regatta, our CPR First Aid Certification, our Land Cruise, Sailing Seminar with Kristin Berry, Murder Mystery Night and some great Birthday Nights. And, Kevin Broderick has done a great job as DJ, spinning tunes and getting people to go Karaoke on themselves! It’s been lots of fun. FROM THE FLEET Spring has arrived…and earlier than ever. Let’s hope the spring weather we had in March continues through April and into May. There should be no excuse for not having your boat in the water and ready to cruise to Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace, for our Shakedown Cruise. The dates are April 28 and 29. The Shakedown cruise is always a grand opportunity to celebrate spring with your friends at NERYC, and to visit a wonderful town on the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Barbie and Bruce Taylor have graciously invited us to their home in Havre de Grace for our cocktail party. What a generous invitation and we thank them! Bruce and Barbie will provide beverages and appetizers and I will ask each person for a cash donation towards costs. Please join us at Tidewater by boat or land yacht! Slip fees at Tidewater are $1.50 per foot. Jeff Andrews, Dockmaster, has requested each person make their own reservation by calling 410-939-0951. Please also let me know via email or phone call every person attending. It is important that I have an accurate head count by April 13th. Please see flyer herein for more details. And with the official opening of the season drawing near, we have so much more coming up: Shake Down Cruise, Open House, and Opening Day Ceremonies to name a few. Let the season begin! Looking forward to sharing a happy and safe boating season with NERYC members! If you ever have a question about the dates of specific events, check out http://www.neryc.com/pages/ NERYC_Calendar.htm. We keep this calendar updated at all times to keep you in the know. April 28-29 2012 CRUISE SCHEDULE May 26-28 June 29-July 1 Don’t forget to sign up for our spring work day in April. FC Ginny Somers 12 13 14 FROM THE RACE COURSE We had a another record turnout for the Sail Seminar held on March 24th with almost 60 members and visitors in attendance. Kristen Berry returned as presenter and this year the focus was on understanding the sailing dynamics of improving race performance. Kristen has an excellent ability to explain the sailing science and concepts around this topic, which make them easy to grasp. Most importantly though, he is able to relate the theory into practice application in a way that everyone ‘gets it’. Attending the seminar is a great refresher ahead of the racing season. No matter how long you have been in the sport, there is always something to learn and there is always room for improvement when it comes to the skill set involved. The start of the season is not far away now. Please review the NERYC Racing Schedule to plan your ace activities. I would like to ask everyone who intends to compete this year in any of the club race events to send me an email and let me know. Likewise if you raced last year, but do not plan to race this year, we would appreciate a heads up on that too. This will greatly assist us with our planning. With all the warm spring weather we have been having, I trust you are all way ahead on your bottom preparations. If not, the good news is that you still have a number of weekends available.
