June 2010 Issue Soundings Harbour Lights by Sylvia K. Gozzard club website Contents In Sounding’s April issue, our last port proceeding North, was Kincardine. Pictured to the right is: Port Elgin where range lights make the entrance into the harbour easy. The attendants at the concrete, gas dock on the starboard side directs boaters to floating slips. Any needed items not currently on board, need picking up before departing. It’s a busy port. We’ve seen power vessels filling up with wallets greatly decreased in size. Lighthouse: White cylindrical tower, flashing white 4 second intervals, on the east side of the island west from Saugeen/Southampton. Port Franks, June 5th a Boat-Pro (PCOC) seminar will be offered starting at 1230. Southampton dockage isn’t inviting, but very useful as a port of refuge. (Nominal range 6 nautical miles) Height above water 31.6 metres. (Approved Boating Handbooks will be available for $16.00 and CDs for $5.00) PCOC Challenge Exam, Port Franks Yacht Club, June 6th at 10:00 a.m. cont’d Page 1 Saugeen/Southampton Pier, South Saugeen/Southampton, Rear Click link for light listing Stokes Bay Stokes Bay Range Light, rear Front Range Light Harbour Lights continued to July issue Our sailing trawler, Scorpio, drafts 30” and we had a great time staying in Stokes Bay. The people were friendly and for ten dollars, the government docks provided space. Stores were not within walking distance. Most sailing boats avoid all marinas after Southampton and do not put into ports before Tobermory. Bayfield Harbour, late in the day, wind and wave pictures Page 5 Brunch Pics Submitted by George Dutka and Bill Newton The Commodore’s Brunch was again an event that brought out the best for the membership who expected the best. Eggs Benedict was served by Rear Commodore, Dave Maguire, (always in a race to be on time with the rest of the meal.) Pancakes were a duo effort by Treasurer, Ole Hammerberg, (best bottom) and club member, Harry Harris, (always hairy.) Vice Commodore, Ray Rogolino, (always a ray of light) as head chef, steered us to the finish line. Fresh fruit kabobs were prepared by Past Commodore, Bill Morrison, (smiley.) The bacon was a cooking contest to see if Commodore Bill could stay on his feet long enough to finish the job. How can we forget the introduction by Lorraine Hunter (across the river, cottager and sailboat owner), that wet our taste buds with her delicious desserts (she created a task of bettering herself for next time.) The weather broke in our favour and the Club’s annual sail past for Commodore, Bill Newton, took place and, was able to stand without falling for the whole sail past. Thanking all who participated, it was GREAT! Contact Bill Morrison Wanted, to rent a boat and captain for a sunset sail. - July 10th I am wondering if you could put in the newsletter, wanting to find a captain with a sailboat that would take myself and four friends for a birthday sunset cruise for an hour or two on the above date. We are regulars at the Oakwood every year and wanted to arrange something special for one of the women for her birthday. No food or drink is necessary. We would obviously provide compensation for the time and effort by the captain (s) and expense for the cruise. Thanks. I can be reached by email Jennifer R. If you reply, make sure you don’t guarantee wind! L0L Page 8 Greetings Page 9
