Principal’s Report
Ode to 2011-2012
As this school year comes hurtling to an end,
With lessons, assignments, fieldtrips, exams, and grad,
And before the next school year comes round the bend,
It’s worthwhile to take stock of the year that we’ve had.
We began the year by saying a fond good-bye
To Mrs. DeRuiter: “The Manna Lady” for a generation
September also saw us give Early Dismissal a try,
And so began a journey that wouldn’t end till graduation.
In October Literature became the dominant theme,
With Sigmund Brouwer explaining how to write a great tale.
Ten high school students came together as the SOUL Team,
And the students tried beating teachers at soccer, to no avail.
PICS and Emmanuel Home began Making Connections
again this fall.
This year Rehoboth joined, which was something new.
Students spent one afternoon a month providing service
to all,
But even though the focus is on giving, they received
much too.
November saw the Dutch exchange students depart our fair
land
And in December we celebrated the birth of our Lord,
With a concert from the elementary students and Sr. Band.
A beautiful night singing praises with one accord.
January went by with exams, and the start of term two.
Manna took the focus during the month of February,
And in March we bid 4 of our students adieu,
As they set off to visit the ‘Mother Country”.
In April 5 school bands arrived in Edmonton for a weekend,
With the goal being a performance majestic and grand;
As well as finding fellowship, and making friends.
It all came together even more beautifully than planned.
In May there was an event truly unique; a one of a kind,
The school morphed into a Social Studies museum for
a night.
The concept grew out of the collective staff mind,
And the projects, artifacts, and ‘wax’ figures were quite
the sight!
Later that same month another school production
did appear.
This time it was Adrenaline Theatre that took center stage,
“The Beverly Hillbillies” was the superbly performed play
this year.
It even made the local paper’s entertainment page!
June is always a busy month with trips and events.
Kananaskis, Jarvis, sports day, golf, biking and more fills
the slate.
As well as students memorizing a year’s worth of
course contents,
Knowing that at the end of June the exams await.
And while this little poem has done a quick review,
Of some of the highlights that we’ve enjoyed this year,
It must be recognized as being but a brief overview,
Because many other things have happened around here.
Winter formals, Talent shows, and sports to name three,
As well as Gr. 9’s cleaning up the Rehoboth Camp for 2 days,
Hot lunches monthly, and a school yard/road work bee,
The school has been active in so many ways.
And we haven’t even touched on the role of volunteers;
This year we tracked those who served without recognition
or fame.
To these many dedicated individuals we say “Three Cheers!”
And thanks for the 1300 hours of work to all you who came.
Above all we thank God for another year spent,
Working together as students staff and Board,
Providing education for children of His covenant,
To the praise of our Saviour and Lord!

New School Website Arriving
Online This Summer!
I am very excited to tell everyone about the new up and coming PICS website! Over the past several years our current
website has not been used to its full potential, but we are changing that! We began a few months ago and after much research and several presentations from different website companies, we have hired Pixel Army : Strategic Website Design.
They have already presented us with their initial designs for the PICS website and it looks great!
The board, administration and teachers at PICS would like to see our new website serve as a strong communication tool
between home and school, staff and parents, board and society members. It will also be the place to go when you are
looking for current information such as a school calendar, upcoming events, individual teacher pages , picture galleries,
athletics section with schedules and other information as well as current issues of PICS Life and the weekly newsletter.
This new website will still be operating under the current domain name of www.parklandimmanuel.ca and will be fully
functioning by August 15th, however we are working hard on this and it may be done even sooner!
We also welcome your input and suggestions so please email [email protected] if you have anything
you would like us to consider for the website.

Sledge Hockey
On Friday, March 23, a program coordinator for the Paralympic Sports Association came to our school with some roller
hockey sledges. After spending some time teaching the PE 20/30 class the basic skills of the sport, the sledges were
left at the school for the enjoyment of the high school Physical Education students. At lunch time, the PE 9/10 class
challenged the grade 11 and 12s in a fun-filled match that was enjoyed by all of the spectators. By the end of the day, it’s
safe to say that many of the students at PICS learned about a new sport, and gained appreciation for the challenges that
face athletes with various disabilities, and also for the hard work and determination that it requires to be a Paralympian
(it’s really hard on the arms!).

Run For Your Life 2012
This year we began as a brand new Run For Your Life Committee. This was a much less daunting task thanks to
the previous year(s) committee forwarding us all of the event and promotional information they worked so hard to
develop. We want to thank everyone who was previously involved with the Run For Your Life committee over the last
4 years, your hard work and efforts had already raised more than $200,000 for PICS and it paved the way for this year's
committee to continue on this path!
Event Highlights
On Saturday, June 2nd, ten teams met bright and early at the Immanuel Canadian Reformed Church. This year's race
was based on the history of Edmonton and the race began with a "shot-gun start" (no there was no golfing involfed!).
As each team was ready to head to their first challenge site they were handed an envelope with an address and directions
to their destination, which was different for each team. Once all the teams arrived at their starting location the race
began by the sending of a mass text message, (our shotgun start) to all challenge site volunteers. Each team went
through the exact same course in the exact same order and ended with a final challenge (a quiz on the history facts they
learned thorough the day), at their original location. At each of the 10 challenge sites the teams had to complete a
different challenge, some team challenges and some individual challenges. These varied from physical challenges such as
human bridge building, to simple (or not so simple?) math challenges, to a canoe challenge at Whitemud Creek.
A fundraising event such as this one does is not successful without alot(!) of volunteers and we want to say thank-you to
our challenge site and dinner volunteers:

The 2012 Cultural Event of the year:
NIGHT AT THE PICS MUSEUM
By : Ashley Bos
“Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all
who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness
endures forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is
gracious and compassionate.” Psalm 111:2-4
Very often, when we speak of the wonders of God, we
speak in the context of scientific discoveries or natural
wonders. We also think of the way that God delivers his
people from turmoil from our sinful world. But often we
overlook the wonder of God in the good times. Our lives,
our communities, and our culture running smoothly is
also a testament to God’s glory. On May 3rd, Parkland
Immanuel Christian School held our first ever Night at the
PICS Museum, and showcased a variety of different ways
that you could see God’s hand in our world now, and in
the past.
The event, as advertised, was most certainly the cultural
event of the year for most people. The entrance to the
school had been decorated with a Welcome banner made
by the Grade 6 class, whose artwork was also displayed in
the programs. Some very finely dressed greeters met the
crowd at the door with a smile and handed out programs
(while they lasted). A very big Thank you to Jared Frost,
Sam Huizing, Darian Rook and Ian Jagersma for their
willing participation! Various “valuable” artifacts were
displayed as well, for the viewing pleasure of those who
arrived early.
Each Grade was responsible for choosing a topic,
researching and presenting that topic in a variety of
different ways. The Kindergarten class, headed up by
Jessica DeWitt, Sonya Deleeuw and Linda Appleyard,
explored our communities of church, home and school by
displaying handmade posters displaying each community.
The Grade One class, under the capable and energetic
hands of Arenda VanderVeen, went in depth and explained
the differences between urban and rural communities.
Their display came complete with an Edmonton Police
Service Display, a hand-made skyline, real chicks, and
saddles. The main focus of the display: showcasing that
God’s people can live in Rural and Urban communities,
but they are all part of the church.
The Grade Two display was held in the Music Room.
Michelle Doorten (who took on a significant role in
organizing the whole event) and her students collected
various artifacts, artwork and tools used and created by
“The Inuit of Iqaluit”. Some of the main showstoppers
were a real Narwhale tusk, a polar bear hide and some
Inuit artwork, kindly loaned out by Mr. Doug Leffers.
Grade Three showed the community different aspects of
India, including animals, replicas of the Taj Mahal and
the Golden temple, real Indian clothing and many more.
While Marg Tams was away due to health issues, Joanne
Aasman stepped in and helped guide the students during
this event.
The Grade Four class, led by Andrea Meliefste, set up an
exhibit showcasing “Our Prairie Settlements.” Included
were talking “wax figures”, Native American Tipi models,
soddies, forts and much, much more. The front of
the room was decorated with journal entries from the
“pioneers”
Grade Five had a very interesting display titled, “The
History of Our Nation”. This display extended outside of
the room with a long house used by Native Americans.
Inside the room you could see the process of “panning
for gold….”, as well as displays on the RCMP, the Trans
Canada railway and early settlers.
The Grade Six room may have been the loudest room in
the museum, thanks to the booming voices of Socrates and
Plato. The room was set up to showcase the “Democratic
Experience” from the earliest form of democracy to what
democracy looks like in Canada today.
The Spanish and the Aztecs were the topic of research for
Brad VanRaalte and his Grade Seven class. They had set up
in the kitchen to treat us to some authentic Spanish and
Aztec cuisine, as well as their homeroom, which displayed
model temples, weapons, and even a pair of assassins.
The Grade Eight’s, under the guidance of Gary Drost,
created a more tranquil environment and showed us a taste
of Japanese life. Lovely girls dressed in kimonos served us
rice while Japanese music played in the background. On
display were also other articles of Japanese clothing
and artifacts.
Richard Veldkamp and the Grade Nine class disappeared
into the jungle, and showed us how different economic
systems compare to different jungle animals. You could
pop in, watch a nature video and take a stroll through the
small jungle zoo.
John Jagersma and the Grade Ten class regaled us with a
very different twist on an ancient romantic tale. The “Wax
figure” Romeo and Juliet was a big hit, with line ups out
the door. The French room had been transformed into a
tomb, and the students dressed up in
Shakespearean costume.
The Grade Eleven class, with Richard Veldkamp,
discovered a new tribe somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.
You could experience tribal homes, costume, and even
have a snack!
\The Grade 12 class and Mr. Meliefste made a very
large and impressive timeline outlining the evolution of
Liberalism, and how it affects us now.
A special thanks goes out to Joyce Panek for going out
and ordering and buying all the refreshments and to
Ashley Tiggelaar and Carla VanderVeen for making sure
the refreshment table stayed stocked throughout the night.
All in all, we aimed to have a successful student-led event,
and our goal was accomplished. We, the organizers, owe
a huge thank you to all the students for their very hard
work, to the supervising teachers for their guidance, and to
all of those who came out to join us!
On behalf of the organizers Gary Drost, Ashley Bos,
Corny Meliefste and Michelle Doorten, thank you!
The beautiful program cover art was done by Saige Baker
on her own time. Thank you Saige!
