Jealous ex is jailed for
revenge arson attacks
A MAN who carried out a revenge attack by torching a car outside his
ex-girlfriend’s home, starting a blaze which put her life in danger when
it spread to the house, has been jailed.

Tom Weedon, fuelled by drink and
drugs, had then gone on to set fire to
another car some miles away at what he
mistakenly thought was her new
boyfriend’s home, Warwick Crown
Court heard.
Judge, Recorder Christopher Goodchild, was told how the 21-year-old had
acted out of vengeance after his former
partner had co-operated with the police
to identify him on CCTV recordings of
knifepoint robberies he had carried out.
Weedon, of no fixed address, was
jailed for seven years after pleading
guilty to two charges of robbery, one of
attempted robbery, three of having a
bladed article, one of theft, and two of
arson being reckless whether lives were
endangered.
Prosecutor Graeme Simpson said that
in the early hours of Monday, 2nd
November, last year a hooded Weedon
bike from the multi-storey car park in
Linen Street, Warwick, and later that
evening, wearing a motorcycle helmet
with the visor down and brandishing a
knife, he went into Subway on Shires
Retail Park in Leamington and ordered
two female staff members to open the
till. But he left empty-handed after they
ran off through a fire exit.
Two hours later, still wearing the
helmet, he targeted the BP garage again,
threatening a staff member with the
knife before apologising as he made off
with £450. He was again caught on
CCTV and his ex-partner assisted the
police by agreeing to look at the recordings, and she recognised him on them,
but he again denied being involved.
Then in the early hours of Saturday,
2nd April, this year there was a report of
a vehicle on fire on the drive of a semi-
threatened two members of staff at the
BP garage in Stratford Road, Warwick,
with a kitchen knife. He ordered that
they open the till and lunged across the
counter with the knife and grabbed
about £350 before rushing out.
The incident, and his route from the
garage, had been covered by various
CCTV cameras, and a glove he had
worn was found by a police dog, and
was later found to have his DNA on it.
But he was not identified until two
weeks later when he returned to the shop
as a customer, and one of the assistants
recognised him not just by sight but also
by his voice.
Weedon was arrested, but he denied
being involved and no further action was
taken because of difficulties establishing
his identity as the robber.
Then on Friday, 4th December,
Weedon stole a 250cc Yamaha motor-

detached house in Yeats Drive on the
Chase Meadow estate in Warwick.
Weedon’s ex-girlfriend’s black Saab
93 had been set on fire, and the blaze
had spread to her new boyfriend’s Peugeot work van. Both vehicles were
destroyed, and the front of the house was
also badly fire-damaged.
Meanwhile, Weedon went to an
address in Leamington where he set fire
to a Vauxhall Zafira parked outside a terraced house, in the mistaken belief it
was the home of his ex’s new boyfriend.
That fire again spread to the front of the
house, causing the windows to burst
from the intense heat.
Nick Devine, defending, said: “Drugs
and alcohol are the problem.At the time
he was on a potent cocktail of serious
drugs and alcohol.
“Money was needed to buy the drugs
and to live, and he turned to crime to get
that money.”

child told him: “Firstly the robberies. I
accept that at that stage your personal
life was in a mess, and you were taking
a cocktail of drugs which completely
shifted your sense of judgement.
“But there were three separate robberies, one of them an attempted robbery
after the two girls, who have been terrified by the experience, fled, and the
other two were actual robberies.
“Your former partner, and the mother
of your child, was attempting to settle
down with another man, and she helped
the police.She put the finger on you.
“The result is that you sought
revenge. You were steeped in drugs, and
you went past and saw the car, and set
fire to it. It caught a van alight, and as
they both blazed it caught the house. It
must have been absolutely terrifying for
those inside.
“What could have happened is that the
occupants would not have woken up and
would just have expired by smoke
inhalation and would then have burned
to death.”

donated to Sue Ryder — the store’s current chosen

in the People’s Postcode Lottery.
The pair, who live in Shortacres, scooped the
money in the Daily Prize on Friday, 19th August.

Air ambulance wants volunteers for fundraiser
VOLUNTEERS are needed to support the local Air Ambulance
Service as it gears up for a big
fundraising drive.
During Air Ambulance Week
2016 (17th-25th September), Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air
Ambulance are asking the people of
Stratford to help them raise enough
money to beat last year’s
fundraising total of £25,000. In particular, they are looking for people
to give just an hour of their time as
a tin collection volunteer.

increased at The Hub, in
Henley, it was announced
by the community centre
when it released its
autumn programme of
youth work.
In addition to three afterschool coffee bars held
from 3pm until 4pm on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays, three youth
evenings will be held every
week, with something for
all ages and interests.
Young people who live
in the Henley area have
been invited to try out the
youth club for free.

Year 5, they can enjoy their
first youth club experience

opens on Monday, 5th September, from 6.30pm until
8.30pm.
Tuesday Club for 11- to
13-year-olds opens on

Wednesday Club will open

session is free, run by qualified youth workers and
experienced volunteers.

and chairs, and a drip irrigation system for Magara School, near Arusha, in

go on public show
A FIRST glimpse of the Warwickshire County
Record Office’s newly-acquired Healey Motor Company Archive takes place on Sunday, 4th September,
writes Michael Lear.
The collection has never been open for public
viewing before and will provide a fascinating insight
for avid car enthusiasts and families into the Healey
family of Warwick.
From 10am to 4pm, there will be a display of documents, film, photographs and sound recordings, as
well as a talk by collector Warren Kennedy on the
early Healey cars manufactured at the Cape Works.
To bring the history of the marque to life, various
Healey cars spanning the decades will be on show in
the car park.
Activities for children will include designing and
drawing a Healey car and a chance to meet the
Record Office mascot, Chambearlin the Bear.

Elderly man hurt after
car and tractor collide
A MAN in his 70s was
taken to hospital following
a collision between a car
and a tractor in Banbury
Road in Ettington.
It happened on the A4222
near to the junction with the
Fosse Way at around
5.45pm last Wednesday,
24th August,

made and an ambulance,
paramedic officer and the

from Stratford and Shipston.
The road was blocked for
a time while the man was
cut from his vehicle before
being taken to University
Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire with chest and
back pain.
Meanwhile, a man had to
be cut free from his
vehicle following a threevehicle collision in Warm-
ington last Tuesday.
The incident occurred
outside the former Wobbly
Wheel pub on Banbury
Road at around 4.30pm and
the police, ambulance and
fire service were dispatched
to the scene.
One man was cut free by

patient was transferred
to hospital with minor
injuries.

orchard running, taking in all 58 acres of
the orchard.
“There will also be a fun day with a
bouncy castle, pick your own apples, food
and cake stalls, cider tasting, and a goody
bag to take home. Treat your whole
family to a fun day out!.
“We’re hoping that this exciting 10k
and fun family day will be a complete
sell-out.”
The run starts at 10am and entry costs
£20 per entry, and £2 for parking.

Following our workshop last year we have recruited enough ladies to
start a women’s Morris side and they appeared for the first time for
William Shakespeare’s birthday celebrations in April along with a
substantially increased number of men.
The club had an enjoyable day at
Westminster day of dance. We entered the
Shakespeare Marathon and danced all the
way raising money for a local charity.

Bancroft Gardens dancing, along with local
guest sides and we have just returned form
the Saddleworth Rush Cart Festival.

payment plan
RESIDENTS are being invited to have their say on
Stratford District’s Council’s proposed new Local
Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
This is the scheme funded
by the district council to
assist those members of the
public who are financially
unable to pay their council
tax. Government changes in
2013 meant that local
authorities had to introduce
their own council tax support scheme.
Stratford
District
Council’s own scheme has
largely stayed the same with
no change for current
claimants and continuing to
protect households on the
lowest incomes as well as
retaining all of the existing
protections and providing
additional support for war
pensioners.
The district council mitigated any loss in funding by
introducing changes to discounts and exemptions for
second homes and long term
empty properties.
The government has
announced that it intends to
further reduce the cost of
welfare support budgets in
the coming years, which will
result in further funding
reductions for the district
council. As a result the district council has agreed to
undergo an informal consultation exercise based on the
following:
Reducing the maximum
level of support for working
age applicants from 100 per
cent to 80 per cent.
Removing the Family
Premium for all working age
applicants.
Reducing the period for
which a person can be
absent from Great Britain
and still receive council tax
reduction to four weeks.
To remove the element of
a Work Related Activity
Component in the calculation
of the current scheme for
new Employment and Support Allowance applicants.
To limit the number of
dependant children within
the calculation for council
tax reduction to a maximum
of two.
To remove entitlement to
the Severe Disability Premium where another person
is paid Universal Credit
(Carers Element) to look
after them.
The results of which will
go to the cabinet in
November with the final
decision to be made the following month.
The consultation started
online at www.stratford.
gov.uk on Wednesday, 17th
August, and runs for eight
weeks, ending at 5pm on
Wednesday, 12th October.

New campaign’s bid
to boost recycling
HOUSEHOLDERS are being
reminded about some of the
more unusual items that can be
recycled.
In the run-up to Recycle Week
2016, 12th to 18th September, Warwickshire County Council has
launched its Unusual Suspects campaign to highlight some of the often
forgotten items that can be recycled.
Objects including aerosol cans, foil
trays, beauty crème jars, plastic
shampoo bottles and toilet roll tubes
are often dumped rather than recycled.

THE M40 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 15 AND JUNCTION 16)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2016
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Highways England Company
Limited (Company No. 9346363) intends to make an Order on the
M40 Motorway, in the County of Warwickshire, to allow general
maintenance works to be carried out.
The effect of the Order will be to close the slip roads leading to or from
the M40 at Junctions 15 and 16.
The work will be carried out overnight between 22:00 hours and 06:00 hours
and is expected to start on Tuesday 13 September 2016 and continue for
three nights. The Order will come into force on 6 September 2016.
Vehicles being used for police, fire brigade or ambulance purposes
and vehicles being used in connection with the works or by a traffic
officer, will be exempt from the closures.
Diversion route via the A452, A3400, M42 and alternative junctions
of the M40 will be signed.

Willis returns to
help future stars
WIMBLEDON sensation Marcus Willis has coached at his
home tennis club for the first time since his match against
seven-times winner Roger Federer.
Willis, of Warwick Boat Club, was the world number
772, but played Federer on Centre Court in June after
coming through six rounds of qualifying and the first round
proper.
Around 70 people attended a free session to allow nonmembers to try the sport.
And the 25-year-old, who is now the world number 420,
said his life had completely changed since Wimbledon.
He said: “I got on an aeroplane at Atlanta. The security
guard looked at me and went ‘Willis. I know who you
are’.
“The story has gone global. Everywhere you get ‘this
was the guy who played Roger Federer on Centre Court’.
“I’m getting a lot more offers.”
Willis, who is away on tour for up to 30 weeks a year, has
since played for the New York Empire team in World Team
Tennis, which included doubles action alongside former
world number one Andy Roddick.
He plans to make personal appearances and appear at
exhibition events when he is not competing.
“We’re really lucky to have Marcus training and
coaching here,” said Warwick Boat Club tennis manager,
Gavin Henderson.
“He’s infectiously enthusiastic and really got everyone
fired up.
“He always plays with a smile on his face and he’s
helped spread the word about our regular free Sunday afternoon sessions for everyone, which are proving really popular.”
The free try-out sessions will continue throughout the
summer at the club from 2pm and 4pm each Sunday.
Players do not need to book and rackets will be provided.
