October 2015
Welcome to yet another superb display of model engineering in all
its fascinating variety. With hundreds of models of locomotives,
rolling stock, traction, stationary and hot air engines, boats etc. plus
workshop equipment and clocks – virtually every interest is represented.
Welcome to the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, now in its 38th year. Again we present a
fascinating exhibition for your enjoyment, with over a thousand models on display on over 40 club
and society stands. We also have a full complement of specialist suppliers with nearly 50 companies
represented, so in addition to viewing the model displays you’ll be able to purchase virtually anything
you might need for your modelling activities. Whatever you require, be it castings, materials, cutting
tools, lathes or milling machines you’ll find a wide selection, giving you the opportunity to compare and
decide on the best for your needs. We also have a full range of lectures with a range of different subjects,
giving something of interest for every visitor.
In addition to the hundreds and hundreds of models on static display we have live
steam on the 16mm narrow gauge layout and outside the exhibition hall
the Model Steam Road Vehicles and a Miniature Railway will be in action for
your enjoyment.
We hope that you enjoy your visit and thank you for joining us. Each year
sees thousands of visitors enjoying THEIR exhibition, meeting old friends and
renewing acquaintances. We hope that with your support this continues for
many years to come.

EIM WORKSHOP
OUR LECTURERS & LECTURES
Our Engineering In Miniature Workshop gives you, the visitor the opportunity
to see demonstrators at work and ask them all the questions you might have
about a particular issue you have experienced.
We are very pleased to be able to present for your enjoyment a very full
lecture programme. Below are details of our lecturers and what they
will be presenting for your enjoyment. All lecturers take place in the
lecture theatre which can be found at the rear of Hall 1, please exit the
building by the rear door next to the cash machine.
The Coventry Model Engineering
Society will be again supporting the
workshop activities and members can be
seen demonstrating everyday skills for
modelling. This year they are making parts
for a small, simple, 32mm gauge steam
locomotive called “Cracker”. They will
demonstrate to the newer members to the
hobby that a simple model that can be built
for minimal cost whilst gaining experience
of the machining methods involved in
building a model of any size.
Our thanks to Chester Machine Tools for sponsoring the workshop activities
and for the loan of machines – make sure you visit their stand opposite the
workshop to see the full range.
DEREK BROWN
Based in Rutland for over 30 years, Derek Brown has been intrigued with model
engineering since a schoolboy, keen on locomotives in 00, 0, 3½”, 5” and 7¼”
gauges and also very interested in the development of tooling and perfecting
various methods and techniques. He has made many contributions to the model
engineering press and has travelled the country giving talks to model engineering
societies. A keen, but lapsed, pianist and repairer of church clocks, Derek is
perhaps best known for his work on drill sharpening and metric screw cutting and
not least for the books he has published, including the latest one on injectors.
Workshop Work: A demonstration of steam injectors.
ALAN SAVELIO
NOEL SHELLEY
As a teenager Noel played with lead, melted in a bean tin on a fire in the garden.
It must have been a catering size tin as he cast what could pass for a cannon
ball. Then his interest lay dormant for many years as he worked in various fields
of engineering, and in a bet which some would say he lost, ran a small waste
disposal business for 20 years. You would never believe the many wonderful
things people throw in a skip!!!!
Having brought and read most the books on foundry work he could find, as
well as saving all sorts of bits and pieces that might come in handy to make a
furnace he got a call telling him of a fellow near Norwich who was selling all
one needed to get started to doing your own castings. This first furnace was
affectionately christened “puff”. It was a fearsome fire breathing beast.
By now the large collection of bits and pieces from all types of places were
arranged in an orderly fashion and by Sunday evening they had become an
extremely efficient and fast crucible furnace. The main components had come
from a washing machine, a spin dryer and a vacuum cleaner.
Workshop Work Every Morning
Pattern and Mould Making – Live Demonstration – see how it’s done.
Outside Demonstrations: Running The Furnace – Live Demonstration - Everyday between 1pm and 2pm outside.
PETER STEVENSON
Peter will be presenting a lecture on shaping sheet metal and has vast
experience of forming metal by shrinking and stretching. He has made many
parts for the Collett safety valve – make sure you go along and gain from his
invaluable experience for your own projects.
Workshop Work: A selection of some part finished domes showing the stages
needed to produce them.

Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition 2015
Steam In Model Boats
Looking at the various designs of steam plants and layouts for model
boats.
Derek Brown
3D modelling - Warts and all!
The lecture considers the principles behind 3D modelling and how it
differs from the traditional CAD process. The method is different from
beginning to end and consequently gives rise to all sorts of problems,
some of which might be foreseen but others which take the user by
surprise.
It is a brilliant concept but for certain applications can be the biggest
time-waster known to man. Comparisons are made between the
mental torture which has to be endured in both processes and it is
hoped that the session will stimulate interest and curiosity in the
systems available.
Derek will also be in the workshop for hands on advice.
Malcolm High
Building in the smaller gauges:- Why, What and How
As we get older the smaller gauges become more attractive, they are
easy to transport and do not need a large workshop to build them.
Many clubs are now installing 32mm and 45mm tracks. This lecture will
cover the pros and cons of 16mm and Gauge 1. Malcolm will then go
on to describe some of the novel methods employed in building Yorkie,
the 16mm locomotive currently being described in Engineering in
Miniature. This session is for the first time builder and the experienced
builder wanting something quick but rewarding that is guaranteed to
run.
Mike Haughton
Hobbing gears in the home workshop
Mike Haughton will describe gear hobbing with particular reference to
the Jacobs, College Engineering gear hobbing machine.
Keith Hale
Overcoming Silver Soldering Problems - Go Back to the Basics
All structural problems arise by something being done that does not
promote capillary flow. Keith draws on his 45 years experience in the
brazing/silver soldering business to review the problems encountered
by the model engineer. He offers guidance to help recognize, prevent
and overcome them. He also offers cost saving ideas along the way.

Based in Nottinghamshire for many years, which is also the birthplace of
the Myford lathe, Alan has always taken a keen interest in engineering and
experimental design.
A passion for new technologies has motivated Alan to develop a CNC
conversion kit for the Myford Super 7 lathe which is unique and has not been
based on anyone else’s design. It was heralded as an “Incredible piece of
equipment” by Myford’s own marketing team at Beeston in Nottingham.
He is looking forward to answering many questions; so, don’t be afraid to ask
him. He is also hoping to try out your machining suggestions which should be
fun too!
Workshop Work: CNC lathe demonstrations to highlight the lathes versatile
capabilities and distinct advantages over using manual lathes.
