These consist of groups of houses cut off from each other by areas of grass. Some of the units which are formed are: Dove Green, Barrows Green and the largest, Selston Green. St. Helen's church, on the edge of Selston, has a square tower dating back to the 15th century. Each year a special Tower Service is held on the nearest Sunday to July 6th. at which the vicar conducts the service from the top of the church tower while the congregation gather below. Selston is situated in the Nottinghamshie/Derbyshire coalfield and has a number of mines in the immediate area. This provides a good deal of employment. Another local industry is textiles. ----------------------------------------------- Amber Valley Garden Services HAIR BY CHAR Unisex Mobile Hair Stylist Experienced hair stylist offering professional hairdressingin the comfort of your own home L G C adies Dry Cut from £12 ents Cut from £7 olours, Extensions and more… Charlotte Hool 07539 233607 / 01773 861568 Facebook – Hair By Char Email – [email protected] • • • • • • • • TREE SURGERY AND HEDGE SPECIALIST Tree Topping and Pruning Patio and Drive Jet Washing Garden Maintenance Conifer Work Hedge Cutting Gittering Cleared Fence work Free No Obligation Quotes Rob: 07841 422310 or 01773 607409 Page 4 Community News Autumn 2015 Val’s Recipe Basil Cream Chicken Serves 4 people MAN ABOUT THE GARDEN Hedge, Tree & Bush Trimming Lawn Mowing Weeding Digging Dry Stone Walling FROM £10.00 PER HOUR (excl. materials) Contact PAUL BEASLEY on 01773 813267 / 07947 605777 1 lb boneless chicken breast 1 cup finely chopped onion 3/4 lb fresh mushrooms, sliced 2 tblspns oil 3 tblspns butter 2/3 tblspns plain flower 2 cups chicken stock 1/4 tspn black pepper 2 tblspns finely chopped fresh basil 1 cup whipping cream or substitute 1/2 by using milk Saute chicken, onions and mushrooms in oil for 4 mins Melt the butter in a saucepan, remove from heat, and stir in flour until smooth Add chicken stock, then the cream Stir in basil and pepper Bring slowly to the boil and stir for 2 mins Put the chicken mixture into the saucepan Simmer for 30 mins Serve with tagliatelli or fettucini - or even mashed potatoes and vegetables And whatever you do, don't forget the white wine! They have been a fantastic bunch and should be proud of their achievements, having gained some of our best ever results, continuing our upwards trend. Below are a few of this term’s news items. Year 6’s Fiver Challenge This summer the children in year 6 have become budding entrepreneurs, setting up mini-businesses in school. They applied for funding to set up their projects from a fund run by Richard Branson, then tried to turn it into a profit. We have some talented business people who managed to turn out a healthy profit by the end of the challenge! Sport at Holly Hill It has been a great year for sport at our school. We have taken part in more sports events than ever before, competing with other schools in the area in athletics, cross country and boccia to name but a few. We were delighted when our netball team retained the area trophy this year when they competed in June and when our boccia team reached the district finals. This year we have managed to run a total of four residentials ranging from a one night visit to Penistone in Yorkshire to full week residentials at Hathersage and Walesby. These are a great way for our children to challenge themselves and to take their learning outside the classroom. School isn’t just about English and Maths and we aim to give children as many other opportunities to learn as we can. If you want to see more of Holly Hill, visit our website at www.hollyhill.notts.sch.uk. Beware - Bogus Council Tax Scam Elderley residents in the local area are being targeted by a company stating they can obtain a £1,000 refund on council tax bills by having a property "banding” reduction. The company asks questions such as “how much council tax are you paying at the moment” and “how long have you lived in your property” and they also try to obtain personal information such as bank account details. Only a representative of Ashfield District Council Valuation Office can decide on property banding and they will give you advice free of charge. If you are contacted by anyone, do not disclose any information, make a note of the company's name and address, and ring Trading Standards on 01623 452005. We’ve had residential visits to Hathersage and Norfolk, lots of educational day visits linked to the topics and several themed days in school as well as lots of visitors. The children have enjoyed the wide variety of extra-curricular activities on offer throughout the year and our sports teams have performed extremely well once again both at district and county levels. Summer Term has been as busy as usual. In June, all of the children took part in a sponsored run on the school field. They all put lots of effort into seeing how many laps of the field they could run within fifteen minutes. Half of the money raised was to go to charity and the other half was for school improvements. The children chose Cancer Research UK as the main charity this year and we were absolutely delighted to present them with a cheque for £888 which was half of the £1776 raised. Lots of children took part in sporting activities including athletics, tennis, cricket and tri-golf. Our Lower Junior Athletics team represented Ashfield in the Nottinghamshire County Finals finishing in bronze medal position. Our cricket team also qualified for the County Finals before being knocked out in the Quarter Finals. Out tennis team, also representing Ashfield District performed outstandingly well in the County Finals winning the competition and finishing as Nottinghamshire County Champions. Well done to everyone who has represented our school throughout the year, with such pride and commitment! Towards the end of term we had our annual summer events. The children ran most of the stalls at our Summer Fayre, which raised over £1000. We were very lucky with the weather on Sports Day which came the day after the hottest day of the year! Events included the Egg and Spoon Race, the Obstacle Race and the Bean Bag Race. The children performed amazingly well in our Music and Dance Festival which included the choir, instrumentalists and class dances. Our final Friday saw a ‘Seaside Special’ theme day which included traditional fish and chips followed by ice-cream. The children laid down their beach towels on our ‘green sand’ and played beach games throughout lunch time. Our Year 6 children celebrated their final few weeks at school with an ‘Oscars Party’ organised by their parents, followed by a day visit to Scarborough and then a memorable Leavers’ Service held in St . Michael’s Church. The visit to Scarborough included a trip to the castle, fish and chips on the beach (keeping a careful eye on the seagulls!), paddling in the sea and finally an ice-cream before heading back home. We were sad to see them leave at the end of term but we are proud of them all and wish them all the best for the future. Over the past few weeks the Year 4 tennis team have played some great tennis to qualify for the county finals. The team were interviewed to find out how they managed to do so well! The most recent competition took place at Holgate Academy and included 4 games for each player. Amazingly, they managed to win 15 out of the 16 games that they played. The team which included Sienna, Scarlett, William and Arthur were very happy after taking the gold medal to become the District Tennis Champions! When asked to describe winning in three words, this is what Sienna said: “I was proud, happy and totally surprised!” Arthur on the other hand stated: “I felt very excited to qualify for the county finals .” When asked who they thought had helped them most in coming first, both Sienna and Arthur agreed that it was their coach, Mrs. Sinfield. Clearly, a great tennis team has been formed and the future looks bright! Everyone at Underwood wishes them all the luck in the world for the county finals. Go team Underwood! In May we took part in a joint concert with Huthwaite Prize Band at Huthwaite Methodist Church. It was fantastic to “share the stage” with such a talented band, and the venue helped the Rock’n’Soul singers to really rise to the occasion. We also supported the Ashfield Arts Week by performing in Kirkby in Ashfield in May in the Community Church. In June, the choir sang a range of songs to visitors to Underwood Church garden party. Later that month about 30 of us visited Maple Leaf Centre in Ripley, where we entertained the residents and staff. The 4th July proved to be a very busy day. It started with an outdoor performance to support the opening of the new Plaza in Kirkby in Ashfield. We then performed twice at Underwood Festival. The first was also outside, but this time on the back of a lorry, which enabled voices to carry well across the field. Our day finished with a 45 minute performance in Underwood Church. The acoustics were so good that we all thoroughly enjoyed singing to a very good sized audience and received a great response. Rock’n’Soul Singers performing at Huthwaite Methodist Church, wearing our new turquoise polo shirts, embroidered with our logo. Forthcoming events: Shades of Gold Concert - varied but mainly rock and pop songs - Wollaton Village Hall 17 Oct 7:30pm tickets £5 Annual Christmas Concert - Selston Parish Hall 19 December 7:30pm We will also be singing for Underwood Gardening club on 18th December, as well as carol singing in some of the local pubs in Brinsley and Underwood (please give generously to help us raise money for charity). For further information about these events, purchasing tickets or joining the Rock’n’Soul singers, please contact either Ro (01773 719807), Dave (01773 780192) or any member of the choir. Or if you would like us to provide a concert to help raise funds for your charity please let us know. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Selston Methodist Church Sunday Service 10.45 to 11.45am - The Church is open from 10.15am to 12.30 for quiet meditation before the service and a time of fellowship after the service. Saturday Brunch/Lunch 11.30am – 2.00pm A variety of hot food is served on the last Saturday of the month including full english breakfast, breakfast cobs, soup, jacket potatoes, lasagna and shepherd’s pie. For further information please contact Jill Renshaw on 01623 484965 or Geraldine Kirk on 01773 781062. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Selston Daisy Chain – Sowing the Seeds At the start of my first year as a Selston Parish Independent Councillor I was asked by Gail Turner if I would look after the village’s flower planters. A dream job for a keen gardener like me, but it all happened in a rush and there were no plans, no plants, no helpers and I didn't even know where the planters were. At the last minute I found the team of Community Payback ‘chaps’. Unfortunately the chaps had never seen Gardeners World or the like and their trowel (singular) handling was like juggling with jelly, but they tidied up the planters with extra compost supplied by Lisa at the village hall and binned the old plants, shrubs and bulbs that had been struggling in the original planters, while I organised some more plants. Ever the optimist, I helped them organise 3 plants in a row. Sadly, by the next day, the gremlins had stolen some of the plants and broken others, but we watered them and managed to rescue some. A couple of local people helped to put things right and they’ve very kindly offered to help in the future too. And this is where you come in. It would be great if some of you could get involved too. Our April speaker was Mr Andy Hubbard, a prize winning grower of Sweet Peas who impressed everyone with his dedication to growing these lovely fragrant plants and flowers. Andy had grown Sweet Peas to show standard as well as the 'Andrew Cavendish' variety for the Duchess of Devonshire at Chatsworth House. The talk, complete with excellent slides, was a fascinating and informative insight into growing sweet peas, providing useful hints and tips for every gardener. Andy had brought along plants to buy at a very reasonable price and with everyone inspired to grow their own sweet peas, they were soon snapped up! In May, Gillian Fern provided a fascinating insight into the history and classification of 'Weeds' - just a plant in the wrong place? It was interesting to see how these plants have endured for hundreds of years. For our June meeting we were delighted to welcome to Underwood, Radio Nottingham gardening celebrity John Stirland as our guest speaker. We had members and visitors alike queuing out of the door for a very well attended meeting. John gave advice on using different kinds of fertilisers and after a cuppa, the floor was opened up for questions which included everything from growing hydrangeas to controlling Red Lily beetles! John's expertise was very much in demand and the meeting could have lasted twice as long! The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank local schools who have got involved with community gardening events locally: - Allsorts Play Group have planted bedding plants in the community garden area. - Bagthorpe School have planted up two tubs of bedding plants. - Selston C of E Nursery have grown sunflowers. - Underwood School have looked after the two planters on Main Road, Underwood (Lane End) Also a big thanks to everyone who supported our first Plant Stall / Tombola at the Underwood Festival on 4th July, which was a great success. Our September meeting will feature a Gardeners & Allotments Table Top Sale, providing an opportunity to sell surplus produce or homemade products. Tables at £5.00 are available to pre book (see numbers below). Bring along your items to sell on the night, a small commission will go towards the club. The Friezeland Garden Club meets from 7pm to 9pm at Undewood Community Centre on the last Friday of the month (unless listed differently in the schedule). New members are always welcome and if you would like to find out more about the club, which is for all ages and abilities, beginners and experienced gardeners alike, please call Dawn on 01773 813812 or Rob on 07889 085364. When I received the letter from The Prime Minister in November last year I found it unbelievable but now I have received the medal from The Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire on the 8th May, it became a reality. After this event my husband and myself were invited to The Queens Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on the 12th May. It was fantastic to be there representing our village. Walking the red carpet through two reception rooms into the Queens garden seemed surreal. The Queen the The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall were in attendance. I was on cloud nine. Was I really there? I just wished I could have taken the whole village with me. Walking through the Queens Garden was magnificent and of course we partook of the famous cucumber sandwiches plus other delicious refreshments on offer. There we were drinking the Queen's tea in her garden. I thought I was dreaming. A once in a lifetime experience. Once again I wish to thank everyone who has supported and continues to support the Activity Friends project. What A Year! On top of this I have just celebrated my 70th birthday with a family holiday in Derbyshire and later this year will be going on my first ever cruise to celebrate our golden wedding. Thanks to everyone who has made this such a special year of memories for me and my family. Evening dress was the order of the evening but not compulsory. An invitation had been made to Phil and Janice Fairbrother, the editor and treasurer of the Community News, to attend this ball and we were delighted that they accepted this invite. Maybe next time we can persuade Phil to take to the floor! 52 dancers attended and they were initially greeted with a glass of sparkling wine and also a small bottle of wine. Halfway through the evening they were treated to a sumptuous buffet followed by a raffle. On this occasion the raffle proceeds of £70 were donated to the children of Cambodia. Following the raffle John and Pat Noakes made a surprise presentation on behalf of the group to June Heald. This was in the form of an engraved glass bowl in recognition of June being awarded the BEM this year and to say how proud we all are of her. Without June this Friday night dance might never had got off the ground. This was followed by an elimination waltz which was won this time by Pat and Derek Bullock. The evening then continued with more social dancing until the end at 9:00pm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Activity Friends join Kelyn Dance Trip On Friday 3rd July, 17 of the Activity Friends dancers joined with Selston couple Kevin and Lynn Davey and 80 of their dancers on a long weekend dance trip to Seacroft Holiday Village at Hemsby, Norfolk. We had 2 organists to play for us on Saturday and Sunday, David Last and Chris Johnson, with Lynn providing recorded music between their sessions. Lynn also arranged 2 hours of dancing each morning and provided all the music on Sunday evening. This night was party night with the theme being the 1940’s. There were several soldiers, sailors and land girls and even Captain Mainwaring took a night off from his Home Guard duties. The evening finished with a tribute to the “Proms”. This is a trip that Lynn organises every year and next year is already booked which will be 1st - 4th July and the theme will be red, white and blue for American Independence Day. Lynn says that places are filling fast so if you are interested please contact either Lynn or Kevin on 01773 813701 or 07845417811 or 07725716701. Lynn is a fully qualified sequence dance teacher and runs dances in Eastwood and Hucknall. Details are as follows:Mondays: Teaching hour 12:30 – 1:30pm followed by a tea dance 1:30 – 3:30pm Plumtre Hall, Church St, Eastwood. Tuesdays: Tea dance 1:30 – 3:30pm at Hucknall Leisure Centre. We'd been saving for ages and ages and had eventually got there. It was 3,200 miles from Denver to Seattle in the USA. We'd been looking forward to getting away from it all and spending almost 3 weeks there. We went with friends on a tour organised by MCI Motorcycle Tours who arranged everything for us. On the first day, as we were walking through our hotel lobby, we recognised a few 'local' accents. Local to here, not local to there! Would you believe it, riding on the tour with us were going to be 2 chaps from Underwood just a couple of miles from where we live in Selston, and another from Draycott, about 20 miles away. Unbelievable! Here we were thousands of miles away from home, meeting some people from just down the road for the first time and we were going to spend the next couple of weeks or so on a motorcycle tour with them. It's a small world. As you can imagine we had a whale of a time on the tour (more about whales later). Denver, where we started the ride, is known as the Mile High City, obviously because of its elevation. The baseball stadium (baseball is just glorified rounders) has a row of seats in purple which signifies the exact 'mile high'. On the tour we visited some real cowboy country (Deadwood and Laramie), we went to see a rodeo in Sheridan, and even saw the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn - Custer's last stand. The carving of the four presidents on Mount Rushmore is amazing and there's a new carving in progress. Just a few miles down the road, Native Americans are carving an image of Crazy Horse on a mountain too and it's bigger than Mount Rushmore. They've been carving since 1946 and there's still a lot to do! Yellowstone park with it's guysers, buffalos, bears, moose and other wildlife has to have been one of the main highlights for us. 'Old Faithful' is a sight to behold as it blows its top over 100 feet into the air every 90 minutes or so. My favourite though, was the miles and miles of glorious motorcycling roads that seemed to be never ending. And the whales? We saw them too in San Juan Sound just a boat ride away from Seattle! Phil & Jan Fairbrother ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Tin Hat Writers – Come and Join Us This July, if you wander into Selston Library, you might be surprised to see a display of writing by local people on the wall. We hope you’ll read it as it’s all been written by us, The Tin Hat Writers. We’ve been meeting as a group for a long time now, and have writing sessions on most Thursday afternoons in term time at – you’ve guessed it – The Tin Hat Centre in Selston! Each session is led by Mike Wareham, an experienced writer and teacher, who gives us ideas for writing. We then give it a go and see what happens. We also share our writing with each other and discuss it. Recently we have published an anthology of our writing called A Class Act that you can buy at the Tin Hat Centre. Everybody who has read it has really enjoyed it, which has made us well chuffed. Some of our members have also had their writing published in the local press – you might have read Shirley McIntire’s Doggie Deliberations there, which might have brought a smile to your face! We’re all ordinary local people who enjoy writing and would love it if more locals would come and join us. Have you ever fancied yourself as a writer? Maybe you want to write but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you need a little confidence, and help to get you going? If you’re like this then this could be the class for you. You don’t need to have done any writing before. You don’t have to be a great speller, or perfect at grammar. All you need is to want to write. Maybe you want to write stories for your children or grandchildren. Or perhaps you want to write about your own life. Or maybe you don’t know what to write about at all but need suggestions! Our classes will help you with ideas for writing on many different topics and in different styles such as fiction, poetry, drama or autobiography, introducing you to different techniques. You will also have the chance to share your writing with other people in a friendly environment. So why don’t you come and join us?? The next course starts on Thursday September 24th at 1.30pm at the Tin Hat Centre, Selston. There are 10 weekly sessions of 2.25 hours, costing £63 Telephone 01773864510 or email [email protected] to book or for more information. If you want to buy Shirley McIntire’s Doggie Deliberations it’s available on Amazon or ring her on 01773 788973 Tutor: Mike Wareham Page 29 Community News Autumn 2015 Page 30 Community News Autumn 2015 I am offering YOUR COMMUNITY GROUP one FREE 2 hour wellbeing session REGISTERED FOR RESIDENTS OVER 65 Assertiveness training – Be your own Life Coach Anger Management – Stress Busting Confidence Building NO catch – NO obligation YOU get a fun session – I get to make new contacts Angie Sheard - 07818 20 18 16 • • • • • • Dementia Sufferers Day Care and Respite Well Balanced Diet (special diets catered for) Hairdresser, Chiropodist etc Equal Opportunities Room Vacancies [email protected] www.get-positive.co.uk Residents are treated with dignity and respect at all times and privacy will be respected.
