Welcome to
nature s way to beautiful
Hello there,
We are very proud to welcome you to this special
issue of The Body Shop magazine. This is an issue
of introductions and of new beginnings while
simultaneously being an ode to our precious values.
The release of this magazine is the perfect opportunity
to introduce to you our all new aspirational beauty
movement that gives beauty a new face. Beauty with
Heart embraces the idea that beauty is not only what
you can see on the outside. It comes from within. We
believe it is a perfect mix of looking good, feeling good
and doing good. Therefore, this issue is dedicated to
those three key ingredients.
All through March and April, we have engaged ourselves
in a quest for finding women that embody the values
The Body Shop pursues. Women like Anita Roddick,
meant to have an impact on the world some way or
another. The result is a collection of mini-portraits of
what we like to call Power Women. Each with their own
unique contribution to making this world a better place.
One of these Power Woman is our beautiful and first
ever global brand advocate Lily Cole. The model, activist
and actor offers a glimpse into why she chose The Body
Shop. Read all about it in the feature on Lily Cole.
Other than that we are presenting our very brand
new Pulse Boutiques. This new concept of stores is the
perfect carrier for the Beauty With Heart movement
and the improved product line that goes along with it.
In this issue you can get a peek of what these exciting
new stores look like and how the packaging turned out
before taking a look for yourself!

DOING GOOD
This is the story about Anita Roddick, an inspiring
woman born in an English seaside town in 1942. The
passionate founder of The Body Shop and a great
campaigner for many causes. Already as a child she
had a strong sense of morality, which was awakened
when she found a book about the holocaust at
the early age of ten but also part of which came
from her mother’s experiences. She became Anita
Roddick when in 1970 she married Scotsman
Gordon Roddick, with whom she had two children.
The real story begins in six years later, when Anita
starts The Body Shop, simply to earn a living for her
family.Without any training or experience, she threw
herself into the world of entrepreneurship. And it
worked out well.
When The Body Shop first started out, the store
was only selling homemade moisturizes and haircare products packaged in plastic urine-sample jars.
The products were completely natural and Anita
asked each of her customers to return the jars in
order to re-use them. This new way of production
was in that time still considered radical, something
mostly the early hippies were interested in.
4
DOING GOOD
Anita got her experience from working for the United Nations
and extensive travelling earlier in life, being exposed to body
rituals of women from all over the world. In combination with
previous knowledge, a whole lot of dedication and extremely
good timing, there could not have been better circumstances for
The Body Shop to be born in.
The public was just starting to look for ‘green’ and responsible
products and companies. Anita started talking about fair trade
long before it became generally known and was consequently
the first to introduce socially and environmentally responsible
business onto the High Street. Nowadays, we are proud to still
be the leading cosmetic brand, striving for human rights and
environmental issues.
Anita Roddick’s achievements did not go unnoticed. In 2003
she was knighted by the Queen herself and from then on was
officially known as Dame Anita Roddick. As the British Prime
Minister Gordon Brown said:
“ She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became
fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing
sustainable products to a mass market. As one of this country’s
most successful businesswomen, she was an inspiration to women
throughout the country striving to set up and
grow their own companies. ”
Sadly in 2007, we lost our amazing founder, initiator and mother
of good when Anita passed away after a short battle against
Hepatitis C. By this time, Anita and her husband had turned the
initial Body Shop into a worldwide retailing phenomenon with
nearly 2,000 stores in 50 countries. We are proud to carry on
what Anita had started for all those years. She will live through
The Body Shop eternally.

CRUELTY FREE?
“Experiments on living animals are leading
medicine further and further from the real
cure of the patient”
H. Fergie Woods, M.D
Few people acknowledge the issue of cruel animal testing, even fewer realize what an impact
this can have on our planet and those who act upon the cause are indeed rare. Although the
EU banned animal testing for finished cosmetic products in 2004 and for ingredients in 2009,
over 80 % of countries worldwide still allow animal testing.
A
Animal testing, why?
Animal testing already became a
commonplace in the 1940s. So given
that they have been using them for
decades scientists have become
familiar and strangely at ease with
these animal-bases experiments. It
has become the standard course
of doing business, which makes it
hard to change.
Moreover, cosmetic companies are
required by regulators to prove that
their products do not harm people.
Therefore cosmetics have been tested
on animals for a long time in order
to guarantee safety for its users.
Manufacturers are simply following legal
requirements - producing safe cosmetics
– and this leads to using whatever test
that is appropriate, according to them,
to proof it.
Still, even if it might be a force of habit
these days but it does not make it less
damaging and not to forget, extremely
expensive.
6
There are quite a few types of tests which can
be run on animals, such as the toxicity tests,
genicity tests and the lethal dose test.
At the end of all these tests the animals are
killed to be examined afterwards.
So howcome it is this still happening?
Governments around the world still allow animal
testing and companies need to provide assurance
that their products are safe. The easy way out is
to perform tests on animals but in addition to
being unethical, the tests are also often inaccurate.
And why is that a problem?
How exactly are the animals affected? The most
frequent symptoms caused by the tests are
loss of appetite, hair loss, diarrhea, dehydration
and vomiting (especially for dogs). As already
mentioned, the testing on rabbits is even more
hypocritical. Multiple eye and skin irritancy tests
are performed on rabbits on frequent base
but these animals are not even relevant for
the human body as of anatomical differences.
Not to forget that there are also considerable
differences between human and rabbit skin.
Actually, no single animal species has been found
to be an exact model for the human eye, in
anatomical terms or in response to irritation!
Taking the ethical route
The good news is that there are plenty of other
ways in which cosmetics can be effectively
tested without affecting any animals. For
example to examine skin irritation there are
alternatives such as “Reconstituted Human
Epidermis”. These tests use reconstituted
human skin donated from cosmetic surgery and

Supporters and initiatives
Still, most of the people only observe the end
products and are not concerned with the
process of making them. Luckily, things are
changing! No animal testing for cosmetics is
one of the five values of The Body Shop. Lily

dream and they have joined us in this endeavor.

have been shown to be more effective
than the original but crueler “Draize”
skin tests performed on rabbits. There
are also models which can be used to
replace animal tests concerning eye
irritation. The effects of skin becoming
more sensitive can be predicted by
looking at proteins in-vitro, and photo
toxicity can also be assessed with a cell
based test. Furthermore, companies can
prove their products are safe by using
already developed ingredients. There
are almost 20,000 ingredients - for
which animal testing is not needed - in
the database of the European Union
which companies can freely use!
What we do
It is up to the general public to make
sure that cruelty free testing is not just
a trend but the values will continue
to be shared and understood by the
community. We channel our resources
and energy into the future and we
are convinced that the 245 million
customers who visit our stores each
year, value the principles our brand
pursue.Hopefully, our followers can
spread the word and the number of
supporters will increase in time.
By 1996, we became the first retail
establishment to sign the Corporate
Standard of Compassion to Animals.
Needless to say we are against animal
testing or torture of any kind. None
of our products have been tested on
animals since the 31st of December
1990 and they never will be. How do
we make sure of this? First of all, we do
not commission animal testing and our
suppliers are obliged through a binding
contract not to test products on
animals. Furthermore, we monitor our
suppliers through purchasing policies,
reporting requirements and audits.
Finally, our Animal Protection Steering
Group ensures the implementation of
our policies and reports.
“The Body Shop has been internationally renowned for its Against Animal Testing stance right from the
ver y star t. They have led the way with their effor ts to drive animal testing out of the cosmetics industr y,
and Cruelty Free International is delighted that this commitment is again prominent at The Body Shop.”
Michelle Thew, Chief Executive of Cruelty Free International

What can you do?
For those of you who want to get involved in
this cause; there are many – rather easy - ways
in which you can act. EU citizens can sign the
“No Cruel Cosmetics” petition which can be
found in the new “Pulse” stores. Moreover,
you can choose to only buy cosmetics that
have the leaping bunny logo and ask cosmetic
brands to join the “Humane Cosmetics Standards.” By choosing brands that aren’t tested on
animals and by not buying fur or other clothes
made from animals, people can help without
going out of their way. Don’t forget that you
can also support cruelty-free charities. They
use modern, cheaper and faster technologies,
which are more reliable than animal tests.
We believe in great change
and we have proven it to be
possible. Now it’s your turn to
take action. GIVE US YOUR

DOING GOOD
By the Dutch public
she is most commonly
known as a TV presenter, dancer, model
and former TMF VJ. Bridget Maasland
will always find her way in the world of
entertainment. But not that many people
know that Bridget is as equally or maybe
even more, involved in the well being
of stray and street dogs. All the more
reason for The Body Shop to catch up
with Bridget and talk about their shared
passion; the welfare of animals.
How did it all start?
On a trip to Romania, Bridget adopted her
dog Tibbs via the Romanian Canibucarest
Foundation. She then returned to Holland
for the television show ‘Try before you
die’She put ‘visiting the Romanian killing
pounds’ on top of her try before you
die-list. . After visiting the ‘Killing Pounds’
in Romania, Bridget was shocked so
intensely that she figured she
needed to take action
immediately!

“There are no words to describe the kind of things
that I witnessed over there. The moment I stood
outside the pounds I cried so hard that I saw no
other way then to take action.” As soon as she got
back in Holland, Bridget started the Dutchypuppy
Foundation together with her parents. It was the
9th of November 2005 when Dutchypuppy became
a recognized foundation.
The people behind the foundation
Even though this young characteristic woman is the
face of this organization, it is the hard work and
the gentle touch of Bridget’s parents that make it a
success. “My part is being the face of Dutchypuppy.
12
I do a lot of PR; I provide the interviews and make
the informational movies about the work of the
foundation abroad. I could easily say that my parents
have a fulltime job in Dutchypuppy. Sometimes I am
even scared that they might do too much.’’
Clever marketing or modern world
approach?
The main media centre point of the organization is
Bridget herself. However, Dutchypuppy has other
ways of getting attention. An example of a very
clever, maybe even controversial media stunt of
the foundation is their pin-up calendar. In 2007,
11 female Dutch celebrities posed for the camera,
accompanied by a dog. In 2011, this successful
calendar was followed by a male version in which
12 famous Dutch men and 12 dogs were shot
on camera by top-photographer Marc de Groot.
Bridget Maasland explains: “It wasn’t always easy
to persuade these men into posing. Especially
after they heard they were supposed to out on
a sexy pose without much clothing on.” Luckily
for Dutchypuppy, each and every one of them
eventually gave into the challenge to support the
foundation.
For more information visit www.dutchpuppy.nl
We can all learn from Bridget’s initiative. She
found an appealing and perhaps original way to
communicate with the target audience while
helping her foundation. Nowadays any initiative
of this kind is important for us and for future
generations. Following other celebrities who
dedicated a lot of their time to such charities like
Brigitte Bardot, Paul McCartney or Oprah, Bridget
is setting an example for younger generations. Using
her fame and voice to make people aware of these
problems gives her the role model status.

Aloe vera is a type of the succulent plant. Ever since
the beginning of the first century AD, aloe has supposedly been used for many herbal medicine purposes.
Nowadays, extracts of the plant are frequently used for
their healing, soothing and rejuvenating properties. El
Progreso in Guatamala, home to a select group of family farmers, is where The Body Shop gets its aloe vera
from. This aloe vera, supplied by Guastatoya farmers, is
used for the entire sensitive skin and body care range.
Bergamot oil is obtained from the bergamot orange. Even
though it is officially called an orange, the color is more like
that of a lemon! Bergamot oil has a cooling, refreshing nature
which makes it perfect for being processed in skin care products.
We course our organically grown bergamot oil from Calabria,
Southern Italy. Here, the high quality fruit has been grown by
means of traditional farming methods for over 600 years.
Coconut oil is an edible oil that is
extracted from matured coconuts
harvested from the coconut palm.
The oil has a diversity of applications
in both food and medicine. The
coconut oil that can be found in The
Body Shop product comes from
the Samoa island group, surrounded
by the vast waters of the Pacific
Ocean. The Woman in Business
Development Initiative that operates
on this island provides us with our
organic, virgin coconut oil.
The wood we use for some of our products, including foot files, are
made out of the Siberian Silver Birch. These trees can grow to be 20
to 30 meters tall. However, we don’t just use any tree for our products. Timber Production, our Community Trade supplier from the
west of Siberia, Russia, uses only FSC certified wood. This means that
the Siberian Silver Birch we use is from responsibly managed forests.
Banana puree is nothing more and nothing less
than the word itself says: puree from bananas.
However, what is special in this case is that we
buy this squishy banana puree from El Guabo,
a small group of expert farmers in Ecuador.
These poor bananas are basically rejected by
supermarkets who won’t buy them because
they are the wrong shape and size. They are still
of superb quality though! You can find back this
banana puree in our

Seaweed is an algae species that grows wild in the choppy
waters off the Irish coast. Seaweed is believed to have a tonne
of curative properties, either as food or as skin care. The Body
Shop acquires its Community Trade bladderwrack seaweed
from Ireland. It is cut from the rocks and brought to shore by
boats. Only the best quality seaweed is good enough for our
products. This seaweed is used in our entire
seaweed product-line.

We make it one of our top priorities to find ingredients of the highest

the world in search of only the best. The ingredients and relationships
that we find on this quest around the globe are most sacred.
Blue corn is a variety of traditional maize, grown
particularly in Arizona and New Mexico. It was
originally developed by the Hopi and remains an
essential part of several of their dishes. Blue corn
actually has a blue colour and has a couple of
nutritional advantages to regular corn. The Body

GHANA SHEA BUTTER
Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea
tree. It is a butter that melts as soon as it comes into contact with
your skin and the butter is absorbed rapidly. Shea butter is used
for a very wide variety of purposes, like cosmetics, soaps and is
even used by African percussionists to increase the durability of
their wood. Our Community Trade shea butter is hand produced
by women in Ghana, which they have been doing for generations.
This ingredient is used in a number of The Body Shop products,
including our Shea Whip Body Lotion
It is a part of our job to inform the general public with this knowledge since a product
is mostly viewed as a whole. Most people only regard the end product and don’t even
consider the story behind the product. This is a real shame, because the ingredients
of the products and their origin are just as important. It might surprise you that the
stories behind these ingredients are really often worth telling!
15
FOR THE COMMUNITIES
Fair trade has become a well-known concept
throughout the years. It makes us
extremely proud to be able to say that
The Body Shop stood at the cradle
of this new ‘way of doing things.’
In 1987, The Body Shop launched
Community Trade, being one of the
first examples of fair trade.
Community Fair Trade means focusing
not only on quality products but
also on quality of life. It means
building better futures
through trade.
It means doing
business
with heart.
FOR THE LOVE OF
TRADITIONS
All of the communities that
we do business with have their
own unique and traditional ways
of cultivating and obtaining
their ingredients. We’ve always
been interested in where our
ingredients come from, how
they grow and how they’ve been
processed. That’s the main beauty
we see in Community Fair Trade
ingredients.
No mass production, but merely love and passion for the traditional way of working.
Don Chico from the Guastatoya Farmers in Guatamala uses traditional growing practices
to produce aloe vera of excellent quality. He doesn’t use fertilizers, maintains his
plants by hand with constant weeding and tidying and hand harvests. Everything in order
to protect the purity and goodness of the precious gel.
We love him for it!
16

CARING FOR
EVERY SINGLE
PURCHASE
As a result, more than half of what
you can buy at The Body Shop contains
something that comes from a Community
Trade supplier. It might just be a
few drops of marula oil in a lipstick,
but the number of lipsticks we sell,
results in us buying over 5000kg of
marula oil.
In 2008, we had 31 suppliers
in 24 different countries
around the world. These
suppliers sold us 20 of our
ingredients and over 60
different gift and accessory
items, like foot files and
massagers. In total we buy
over 1000 tonnes of Community
Trade ingredients every year!.
These are among the many
examples of how we operate as
a company. This is how we,
together with you,
make a difference.

might recognize her from movies like Snow White and the Huntsman,
Confession of a Child of the Century and The Imaginarium of Doctor

a bachelor in History of art. Quite some achievements for this
straightforward 24 year old girl.
Therefore it is no surprise that Lily can be an in inspiration, on
many various levels, to young people everywhere. But even this
young ambitious woman is still trying to find herself and getting

The wood we used in the construction
process of our stores, for instance in
the furniture, is not just any wood. Our
wood is FSC wood, which means that it is
responsibly sourced. We are Wood Positive!
This also shows in our paper and cardboardbased packaging. By planting more trees
than we use to create the packaging, our
impact on the environment is minimized.
Even our shopping carts have undergone
a true transformation. These antique-style
shopping carts are replicas of those found
in traditional French market places. This
style goes perfectly hand in hand with
the rustic manner in which we wish to
highlight our products. Just so you know!

THE WORLD
ITALIA SONIA (AGE 24)
“ I found out about this store from a
friend when I was in middle school.
Back then I did not care much about
the word of cosmetics but in high
school I became an activist for the
rights of whales. Ever since I have
taken more of an interest in The Body
Shop as they are the only brand that
suit my beliefs. “
SPAIN TONYA (AGE 23)
“ The Body Shop is an ingenious
brand with products with a good
reputation which can suit everyone.
The Coconut Body Butter is my
favorite product, because I love the
way it makes my skin feel and smell.
I got it for my birthday once. I also
have a lot of free samples. ”
AUSTRIA CHARLOTTE (AGE 29)
“ It’s difficult to choose but I would have to say
that my favorite products are the shower gels. I
love the fresh smells. Yeah it’s hard but even if it
smells so good, don’t eat it! ”
U.S.A LISA (AGE 26)
“ Who would have thought hemp would
make such an excellent product, right?
I’ve been regularly buying the hemp
body butter because my skin gets quite
dry. To say the least it works magic on
me. It’s just so relaxing. I have even asked
it for Christmas once!. I’ll try other body
butters soon as well. If I had the money I
would buy much more but as a student
unfortunately I can’t. I do try to score
free samples a lot and that helps. ”

SAME GREAT BODY BUTTER,
GREAT NEW LOOK
Just like our new stores, they have become bolder, modern, attractive and friendly for the environment.
It was time we gave your favourite product a make over.
The simpler and cleaner approach on the outside is created by the combination between the brighter colors and fewer words.
We also have replaced the old white text with a matte silver for an understated, luxurious feel.
The simple photography captures the product in one blink of an eye, and last but not least, the packaging is 100% recyclable.
“ I am a student so I
can’t always afford to
buy at The Body Shop
but every now and
then I treat myself to
something special. It’s
worth the price saving
it up, a friend of mine
works there and she
tells me everything
about the stories
behind the products.
My favorite product is
definitely the
Body Butter. ”

not fail to impress me so far. They offer so many alternatives
and their range of products is so wide there’s just nothing I
can dislike. Good thing they are all over the world! “
BELGIUM LOES (AGE 32)
“ I buy from the body shop because I like
their cruelty free policy.
Nowadays it is so difficult to find products
that aren’t tested on animals. ”
