BK week this Issue No. 008/13 Weekly e -News Letter January 14th 2013 Rwanda’s Prime Minister Dr. Pierre Habamuremyi speaking during the visit to Bank of Kigali on the 24th December 2012 Rwanda’s Prime Minister commends Bank of Kigali Ltd T he Prime Minister of Rwanda, Dr. Pierre Damien Habamuremyi on 24th December 2012, paid a visit to Bank of Kigali at its head office in the Central Business District in Kigali. He was accompanied by the Minister of Commerce Trade and Industry, the Governor and Vice Governor of the Central Bank in addition to other staff members of the Central Bank. The delegation was received by the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, James Gatera and other members of the bank’s senior management team. The visit began with a tour of various client facing functions including credit loans department, electronic banking, western union, international trade, account opening as well as the Bank’s deposit taking ATMs. During the tour the Premier was briefed on the bank’s product offering for customers in both its retail and corporate segments. The delegation was then taken through a presentation of the bank’s overall performance and its position in the banking sector, in which it holds approximately 30% market share across all key balance sheet metrics.The presentation made by the CEO, also highlighted the significant steps that had been made by both the government and players in the banking industry to increase the country’s banked population which increased significantly between 2008 and 2012, indicating the potential for further gains to be made in financial inclusion within the country. “Bank of Kigali is committed to financially transforming the lives of all Rwandans through increased access to financial services and continues to make significant investments towards this end such as agency banking and the BK MobiBanks” said the Chief Executive Officer. The Prime Minister commended the Bank on its sustained profitability and market leadership position and urged management to maintain the growth trajectory while continuing to deliver exemplary customer service to its expanding client base. Claver Gatete and The Minister of Commerce and Trade Francois Kanimba In addressing those present, the Prime Minister noted the need for further development of the private sector particularly in the areas of low cost housing, mining and energy. He went on to urge the Bank to partner with the government in financing projects in the energy sector to increase the country’s manufacturing base which would significantly contribute to lowering the cost of exports while increasing their volumes. “The electricity capacity continues to be a challenge given that the energy sector requires huge investments and as such we request Bank of Kigali to facilitate financing of energy projects” noted Prime Minister Habamuremyi. The Prime Minister hailed BK’s leading participation in financing Hanga Umurimo projects in the country and said that the scheme is a potential sector for other banks to finance as well. “70% of the Rwandan population is made up of women and young people and access to finance for this group is essential to the growth of our economy and therefore the banking sector should increase its focus on these individuals” noted Prime Minister Dr. Habamuremyi. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Commerce Trade and Industry also assured the Bank of the government’s support in promoting real estate projects especially low cost housing schemes that the Bank can finance. The Bank’s CEO indicated that BK has rolled out an aggressive retail strategy which included a focus on mortgage financing to promote home ownership in the country. “The consumer banking department was set up as part of the bank’s efforts to grow its retail offering and as at 30th September 2012, the Bank had disbursed over Rwf 20 billion of mortgage loans compared to Rwf 12 billion in 2011,” said Gatera. On his part, the Governor of the Central Bank Ambassador Claver Gatete commended Bank of Kigali’s contribution to the innovation currently taking place within the financial services sector. “Bank of Kigali has significantly contributed to the circulation of ATMs and Point of Sale machines (POS) in the country,” noted Ambassador Gatete. He further said that the Bank has contributed significantly to financial inclusion agenda through agency banking allowing the Bank to reach Rwandans who may otherwise have been unable to access financial services. According to Ambassador Gatete, Bank of Kigali contributed significantly to the total loans disbursed in 2012. Other projects that the Prime Minister advocated for include cross border trade finance and agriculture. The function was graced with live performances of Mico Band, catering services by Karisimbi and remarkable speeches by Chief Executive Officer James Gatera, Chief Operating Officer Lawson Naibo, and Chief Executive Officer John Bugunya and this really was team building. John Bugunya Bank’s CFO reflected on the bank’s growth in performance since 2007 to November 2012 and hailed initiatives by Bank stretching from customized products and growth in branch network. Bugunya reported that the Bank’s total assets grew by more than 10% that is from 287 billion Rwandan Francs to 316 billion Rwandan Francs. Further he reported that Customer Deposits mobilized also increased by more than 15% to over 201 billion Rwandan Francs. Net Loans increased by more than 46% that is 123 billion Rwandan Francs to 180 billion Rwandan Francs. “Net Income has equally grown by more than 50% compared to November 2011 which was 7.3billion Rwandan Francs to 11 billion Rwanda Francs. This is a very good achievement!” noted CFO John Bugunya. Chief Operating Officer Lawson Naibo made a presentation on past, present and future perspective of Bank of Kigali where he begun by thanking all staff for making it to the event and highlighted that it is indeed worth celebrating as BK team for all 2012 achievements where BK has been ranked as the Best Bank in Rwanda.“We have grown our balance sheet by over 200 billion Rwandan Francs and on customer deposits in 2007 we had 101 billion Rwandan Francs currently we’re talking about 181 billion Rwandan Francs no other bank in this market has been able to do that.” reiterated COO Lawson Naibo Go to next page Weekly e -News Letter Lawson reported that in 2007 loans issued totaled to 48 billion Rwandan Francs and that currently the Bank has issued 164 billion Rwandan Francs. “We have grown 3 times the amount of loans we have given to our customers. This is indeed a great Social Economic Development.” said Lawson Naibo. In terms of the market share Lawson reported that the entry of other giant banks has not prevented BK growth in market share. “In 2009 our Market Share was 26.4% now we are at 31.9% market share despite the entry of new banks in Rwanda. We are still able to increase our market share in all the various metrics you can talk about,” highlighted Lawson Naibo. On future perspectives Lawson said that BK has all products that are customized to suite the customers’ needs and hence in term of retail accounts BK projects in 2013 to serve 290,000 customers, to distribute 150,000 Visa Cards both Debit and Credit cards, attain 72 Branches and 86 ATMs. On this note he called for collective efforts from all BK staff and strive for excellence. “A lot of effort is required to attain these targets and also serve customers at the best customer service. We need to work even harder and as a team,” said Chief Operating Officer Naibo. He emphasized that BK’s growth and excellence is phenomenal, and that this has been possible through the stewardship of the Chief Executive Officer, Gatera James. On this note he informed staff that CEO was honored with a Doctorate Degree in Finance and Banking by the Commonwealth University of Belize. To this all staff and management tossed glasses in BK CEO James Gatera addressing staff during the end of year party 2012 honor of this achievement where James Gatera becomes the first to be awarded with such a Doctorate Degree in Rwanda. We have worked so hard during the year 2012 and I thank each one of you for your contribution James Gatera who was also the Chief Guest at the event thanked all staff for the collective efforts in making Bank of Kigali the Best Bank in Rwanda. “We have worked so hard during the year 2012 and I thank each one of you for your contribution .I have no doubt that 2013 we will excel even higher,” said CEO. He remarked that since Bank of Kigali became 100% fully owned and managed by Rwandans that is since 2007; the Bank has been able to achieve a lot what previous management that is Belogoloise had never achieved in 40 years of their existence. “All this is possible because of all our collective efforts. We have a lot of work to do as we are soon going regional and therefore we need to work harder that is wherever we set foot we should make sure that we remain at the top,” said Mr. Gatera. He further urged all staff to work even harder if BK is to remain as the Best Bank in Rwanda. Corporate Affairs Department spoke to Chief Shared Services Officer Flora Nsinga in order to understand the significance of having such an event and she had this to say. “The staff end of year party is a good way of recognizing and rewarding staff contribution over the previous 12 months. It’s also a time to enjoy a drink, a dance and office networking,” noted Flora. She further said that the Bank has grown massively and staffs have grown to over 800 hence very essential to create moments when they can interact among each other. After the remarkable speeches the Mico band took to the floor and entertained the staff with different selections of music from western classical, popular, jazz to the traditional Rwandan songs. The music was loud and the dance floor was creaking under the sheer mass of gyrating bodies! Everyone was having a fabulous time. It was also a moment for BK Talents where Jean Patrick Habyalimana the HR Manager and Master of Ceremony of the day welcomed all staff to take opportunity to perform any talent of their choice; and off he begun by singing, Africando-Aisha- Aicha (Khaled)……Comme si je n’existais pas…! the whole crowd was amazed with his rich voice and guitar skills. All staff cheered to him and others took a step to congratulate him on stage. And just before he left the stage there again he sang, “Talking about Revolution….” by Tracy Chapman. sang, “Cheers (Drink to that)” by Rihanna Robin. She amazed the entire crowed with her melodious voice. “What talents we’ve got! Next time no need to higher musicians because we have them already,” said Enock Luyenzi Head of HR and Administration. “It was a fantastic and relaxing day for everyone! What a well organized and fabulous feast for us and what a great time we had!”said excited Sarah Kirenga the in charge of Corporate Communications and PR The function which was held from 6.00 pm went on till morning and all staff was thrilled with music, drinks and networking among departments. What an exciting moment it was.
