Bursa Science Fest
T
his year, 12 successfull university clubs/ communities were chosen to assist the most comprehensive
science fair of Turkey called Bursa Science Fest. The
organization has about 100.000 visitors during only 3 days.
Those chosen representatives were hosted by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Science and Technology Center on
10-11 January.
In this meeting were given trainings on topics which are
how to organize a festival, what is meant the university representatives and how to be informed about the
competition. Simulations were performed to see the results of the training. With games and trips, this process
became more fun and dynamic.
Thank you to the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Science and Technology Center and Science Festival team
to invite us as Team Solaris into this festival.

Our Building’s First Snow
O
ur Solaris building which is located the rear of
the Mechanical Engineering Department, met
with snow for the first time.
After the snowfall, that it occurs rearly in Izmir,
our building was covered with snow and wrapped
in white color on all sides. Also, the oldest vehicle of
our team called Erke (Solaris 1) was covered with the
snow.
In Buca Izmir, monthly average total radiation value
is 4.94 hours / day. In terms of solar energy it was a weak day during the snowfall. The lowest temperature was
recorded as -1 C, and that day was one of the coldest times of the past times.

Advertisement of S2
T
he interets of the advertisement of S2 published
on Sahibinden.com, which is the advertisement
website, is increasing gradually. The news channel HaberTürk made an interview with us recently. The
filming and interviewing continued whole day. We delivered a message about the advertisement that the real
purpose of the advertisement is not selling the vehicle,
the real purpose is to reach people who might support
us. We thank to HaberTürk team for their interest and
support.
T
he story of the advertisement
Our an university community had 4th Development Platform
organized by Industrial Engineers before about 2 months
ago in our campus.
We have also attended as a spectator into
the platform. We took our
electric vehicles there for this
event and make them use everyone.
One of them was Boğaç GÖNCÜ, who is Marketing General Manager of Sahibinden.com. After
he took a campus tour with our electric vehicle,
he wished to support us. So, we also have created an advertisemenet by calculating the cost of one
of our vehicles. Our goal is not to sell the vehicle
as a commercial understanding. Because we have
no authority to do so legally. Our goal is to reach
people and institutions that will support us in this
area. We want to participate World Solar Challenge 2015 which is the world’s most prestigious
solar car race held every two years in Australia.
04
This race also brings out so many
financial needs. Crew and vehicle transport, accommodation
and any other expenses must
be aforded by ourselves. Our
university is giving us considerable support for this and
the university is now our main
sponsor. Destek Automation,
Nuh Energy, Grand Foods and our
many supporters support us with great
sincerity as material and also spiritual support.
But this is unfortunately not enough. We want our
business men and domestic institutions which has
breakthroughs on technology area to support us in
this project. The greater support within, the greater success we will achieve again. With considerable attention in social media, we have succeeded
our main purpose. Here, we thank to Sahibinden.
com for their sensitivity and genuine concern once
again.

2013-WSC Memories
The First Memory
World Solar Challenge is the world’s most prestigious race but it
is also the longest race through its category. The race should be
completed from the northern city of Darwin to the southern city
of Adelaide in totally 3021 km in about only one week. Front and
rear escort vehicles goes with your solar vehicle during the race.
These commands must implement to the pilot of the vehicles
should be ready for immediate treatment in the escort vehicle in
a negative situation as well. So, the drivers should be careful and
need to be warned constantly throughout the race.
Any team in the race should be careful while overtaking the front of their vehicle. Although there are
some accessable areas along the road, generally is single lane road. A team which one want to pass another
solar team, they have to also pass escort vehicles belonging to this solar vehicle. In this case, while both
leading to increase danger and wasting more energy.
Another thing to be aware is the length of the long cars called RoadTrain which have 50 meters length.
The roadtrains might have a high impact on solar vehicles while passing closely. Because of the length of
roadtrains and their size they can swing your vehicles through overtaking. This moments was the most
feared moments, at least for me. We had to pass the all vehicles in front of us. This desicion was already
taken by our team management. While overtaking another team in the race you must connect the related
team frequency to be asking for permission.
One day of the race, we had asked for permission for the first time. We had started to overtake after taking a permission from the rear escort. But this passing command was given for only the front escort. So,
our driver was not supposed to begin to overtake. Because of some disagreements, our driver had already
started to overtake the vehicles following the front escort. Our fear was increasing. Because there was a
roadtrain coming another side of the road. Our fear has increased more and more. Because our driver had
not completed overtaking and the roadtrain was continuing to come quickly. We all took a deep breath
after passing the roadtrain. Our pilot was saved from the roadtrain with just one or two second difference.
Maybe our driver had been saved by a chance or an experience. A small error could be costly. However, we
were saved with a small difference.
The warnings from the rear escort were telling us to be more careful. Although overtaking another team
without any problem until that day , we supposed to be more careful. A mistake had been made but we
learned more than this. We had never encountered any problems during the race and finished like that.

2013-WSC Memories
The Second Memory
One of the biggest targets of all solar car teams is participating to World Solar Challenge. This target could be finishing
the whole race with only solar energy or to gain so many
expericiencies for the next race. WSC 2013 was our first
WSC experience so that; the race was mostly aimed to gain
experience. Though extreme desert conditions, we went
1481 kilometers with only solar energy, and we used our
own electric direct current motor. We can say that the race
was full of experience and passed with tests.
We participated in the race and competed with the best teams in the world with nearly 500,000 TL. This
10 year old team now can make their products such as Electric Motors, MPPT, BMS, Telemetry, wheels,
etc. with the help of technical reports and knowledges of the successful R & D activities. In this way it is
possible for the future to provide great savings and continuous improvement of these products.
Despite all the savings made in 2013, until one month before starting the race, our budget was still
short. We tried to solve this deficiency with specific strategies. Our most important strategy is the
solution for the aviation transportation. So that we were even wondering “If we can really do? “, “Can
we fit our new car into the box which has 3 meters length? ”. We decided that there was no solution. So;
we had this idea into action. After about 2 years of the preparation process, we had to fight with other
teams in the WSC whatever the condition was.
After we decided to cut the body we tought deeply about
how to do this process. We divided into two parts by
cutting the center of the top shell where the panel is. We
have added the carbon rods into two parts for assembling
the each other. We combined the thin and flat Kevlar and
carbon fiber plate with bolts on the line of joining in order
to maintain rigidity. We were able to reduce the amount
of cutting the rear and the front regions of the lower body.
Finally, the vehicle’s length had been reduced to 2.95 meters from 5 meters and logistic costs were also no longer more. In the following part, the adventure had
began.
Our travelling group went at different times to Australia. First team brought the car from Melbourne
to Darwin where the race takes start by themselves. When they arrived to Darwin, the time was close to
midnight. We prepared their meals and their tents immediately. It was time to begin preparations for the race.
The following day, we arrived to Hidden Valley track.
Then, we started to uncover our box. The top and the
lower shell of the body, materials, spare parts, batteries,
compressors were placed into the paddock area. Then we
began to combine the parts of the vehicle immediately.
06

2013-WSC Memories
Firstly, we combined the two parts of top shell. By fixing the parts of the lower shell we assembled the motor and the roll bar. We have finished our works by assembling the canopy. Meanwhile people came to our
paddock area from other teams for watching us. We did not find the opportunity to talk to them, because
we dealed with the assembling the vehicle.
Finally after about 6 hours of assembly process, our vehicle was ready to be tested. Firstly our friends
came from ITU from Turkey. They told us that we have assembled the vehicle so fast. We have also become more motivated after they told us. Then the other teams came to visit us several times. They told us
that they knew us from Solarracing.org which is the most popular blog about the solar races and vehicles.
Our car showed up at 15:35 at Hidden Valley track for the first test. Despite all the shortcomings, we
managed to bring the vehicle to Australia and were ready for this challing race. The next days passed by
strategic improvements on the car. At the end of the race we arrived to Adelaide as a team have gained
more experience than we think.
The most precious thing we gained that we have to continue in spite of all dificulties. Wish to share more
with you in the future by this platform.
The Third Memory
It generally makes difficulties for the different types of
food-cultures while staying in another country .We also had
some food problems during the first days of World Solar
Challenge . Four people from our crew reached Melbourne
as a pioneer group five days ago.We had already talked with
Grandfoods which is a Turkish firm in Australia and they
became our sponsor.
The crew who first went , departed from Melbourne to Darwin with various food which is provided us by our sponsor.
Meanwhile the other parf of crew left Turkey to go Darwin
and reached to Darwin before the second crew .Even though
we ate something out, it was a diffrent type of process for us because of differences in food-cultures .
When morning comes, we will have gone to shopping center which is nearly four kilometers away ,in
order to buy our needs and to eat someting .We waited our friends who went to rent a car, however,
they were late so we decided to walk through shopping center. One of our side was the forest and the
other side was highway. High temperature in Darwin and addition to my thirst made our way longer.
We hardly got the shoping center , and had a breakfast. After we were full we did shopping and then
returned to the camping area. Afterward the food was brought by our friend coming from Melbourne.
Those foods were so valuable for us. Those foods satisfied us during the race. We’d like to thank ourfood-sponsor which never leaved us alone in Australia.

The Forth Memory
World Solar Challenge may be defined as a tough race
which starts from Darwin to Adelaide and passes on the
Stuart Highway which the length is 3021 km . While sounding Australia or Stuart Highway , the first thing comes to
mind is “Desert”. So we had a thousand questions in our
mind ,for example : ”Where will we stay? “, “How will we
solve the food problem ? “, “How do we provide our needs
?”, “How can we deal with dangers (e.i poisonous snakes,
flies... ). They were such questions that we pondered before
taking a road. Despite those questions, we preferred to set
up a camp while staying in Australia.
We, all had settled down in camping area which is called Darwin FreeSpirit Resort&Holiday Park at the
reccommondation of authorized people. Since then we
understood that nothing would be like what we expected.
The camping life which Australian people prefer frequently, had immediately become more liveable. I can clearly
say that we were happy since we prepared for bad things
. There were differences between my country and Australia. In my counrty there were various types of birds such
; sparow , crow, swallow... however on trees of Australia
parrot could be seen. And in the midnights either they
caused fruits from trees to drop on our tents or rumor
made by monkeys tried to scare us .One night one of our
friends who was awake to save us from them claimed to
have catched monkey’s eye. Almost falling asleep , then a voice , huges fruit dropped on our tent. That fear
can not be explained especially for me who is one member in the crew that tends to scare.
If we had ignored mischievous birds , snakes that intercepted us on our way and ants that invale my tent,
everything was cool. However here is the question : How could we get in touch with our families who were
far away from Australia?- Every evening it was pretty small queue by telephone box until the race.Everybody in our crew was previously decided the time of talking , for instance , it costed 50 cent for saying that
“I am okay” , “don’t worry about me “ and conversation approximately lasted a minute .But if someone had
wanted to talk longer they paid 1 or 2 $ and extended the waiting time for the rest of queue. If you understood that time would be up while talking on telephone then you would have a few seconds to say goodbye to each other before the line cuts off.
Solaris has given us lots of experiences , it was just one of them and I hope that it keeps on.

The Fifth Memory
We usually eat in the desert conditions during the race and we
set up camp for the evening. Especially water is vital. Charging
the battaries means to get up together by the first lights of the
morning. Everything should be ready not to be late for the
race. The first work of the day is to collect the tents in the early
lights. Some of us undertakes the charging of the vehicle by
holding the upper shell at right angles. Another group prepares
breakfeast or dinner for whole team. One of my tasks was this
one with my team.
In the morning, snacks and lunch were setting up from breakfeast to avoid wasting the time. The most important thing was making the best food program. Otherwise, there may be undesirable results such as ending
meals early. Another one is water problem. Daily water consumption of the people during the race we set as 3
liters. You find water outside the town but it is not easy as you can imagine. We planned carefully because the
water was too expensive. In some areas, a half liter of water may costs circa 5 TL . My solution here is getting
10 liters of water from supermarkets in the shopping centers. I recommend you, too. You can eliminate this
problem by making water stock.
My second task was driving the escort vehicle during the race. In the first week of the arrival you need to get
used to the organization and the country. The first week usually passes through adapting to the logic of the
race and testing of the solar vehicles. Meanwhile, the drivers of the vehicle should get used to the another
condition. The traffic which follows in the opposite direction. Unlike a lot of country , in Australia the traffics
flows through the left-hand lane.
While your first getting on car, you are going to suprise because of the car steering wheel which is located in
the right-hand seat. Then you feel like a complete novice yourself , but it is normal. However, you get used
to it very quickly, no need to fear. No matter what the speed limit on the road or you’re in town; you have to
comply with the rules. Road signs warn you constantly. The speed limit is generally 30-50 km / h and in highway at maximum 130 km / h. Finally, parking fines looking like as an innocent may upset you. From eight
in the morning until five in the evening in the city, almost everywhere they are forbidden to park the car. An
another note: You can fill your gas tank for yourself when there is no plumber in the gas station, so be careful
while you put in your vehicle with which gasoline. Attention to the cases when I mentioned, I am sure you
will never encountere any problems with traffics.
I would like to share a short memory during the race;
That day was the fastest day in the race. We were around 200th kilometers. All along the way even though
I was constantly checking my back, our driver had followed the another vehicle with overtaking. From the
radio channel “Emre, hurry up !” I came to myself with the announcement and I looked in the mirror by
speeding up. The next checkpoint was very close. Then I asked our driver why he had drived so fast. Then he
said; “ There was a beautiful hill and I had to go to the toilette; so I had lost myself. “
