Dear Guests, Welcome aboard Royal Brunei Airlines (RB). This is the first edition of Muhibah for 2016 and I extend my best wishes to all passengers for a healthy, prosperous and peaceful New Year. A very popular feature in past Muhibah issues has been our focus on staff in different areas of the organisation. Feedback suggests that readers really enjoy this unique ‘behind the scenes’ look at how staff go about their duties with such pride and dedication. In this issue, the spotlight falls on our senior management team, who are geared up and ready to lead their respective teams into the New Year with great optimism. We are especially proud of the number of bright young Bruneians who have scaled the ranks in recent years to assume senior management positions. The future of RB is secure in their hands. RB recently held our Staff Awards and Appreciation Night which was a very important event on the annual calendar. This yearly gala event provides us with the opportunity to honour the hard work of our staff and bestow special awards to our long service personnel. For the first time, RB was proud to be able to honour three staff members who have been loyal to RB since its inception. Joan Lim, Hjh Hajijah Hj Abas and Zainal Abidin Md Ali have now each completed 40 years of service. We Check out eMuhibah at www.flyroyalbrunei.com Be a fan on congratulate each one of them for their dedication and extend our best wishes for their future. In the year ahead, we look forward to continuing our partnership with Wu Chun, RB’s International Brand Ambassador. Wu Chun is a humble young Bruneian who has become a superstar in music, film and now, reality TV in China and around the region. I invite you to read his story (on page 54) that highlights his pride in his role as RB Ambassador and how much he has enjoyed the experience. RB also begins the new year by marking 30 years of flying to Jakarta, Indonesia. The first flight took place on 3 January, 1986 and, with the support and loyalty of our staff and passengers, RB has retained Jakarta as a destination ever since. Finally, a sincere word of thanks to one and all for choosing to fly with RB today and, for our part, we will do our very best to retain your support in the future. JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016 7 FEATURES SPHERE AND THERE The art of handmade globemaking is alive and thriving in North London. Words EMMA RAMSAY Images BELLERBY & CO The tube doesn’t serve Stoke Newington, a city of about 10 kilometres north of London; but for those willing to train it (from London Liverpool Street) or bus it (67, 73, 76, 106, 149, 243 and 393 stop outside Abney Park), you’ll find yourself in one of London’s leafiest boroughs and among a unique bohemian community. But that’s not all Stoke Newington (Stokey to the locals) is known for. Down a mews off Stoke Newington Church Street (London’s longest street name) – a lovely street filled with 8 MUHIBAH boutiques, flower shops, vintage stores, patisseries and cafes – sits an unassuming building. Stand long enough outside and you’ll find about 20 to 30 workers going in and out at any given time. Among them: furniture makers, a handbag designer, architects, art directors, journalists and painters. The scene makes for a good Arthur Conan Doyle premise but, the reality is even more intriguing. This is the epicentre and final bastion of one of the few globemakers left in the world – Bellerby & Co. JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016 9 FEATURES 10 MUHIBAH Despite the flurry of activities on the outside, the workshop – a big beautiful open space and full of light – is a study in quiet focus and preservation. There is a small team of six busily working daily at various stations. Everyone comes from diverse creative and artistic backgrounds. All around them are halfmade worlds, finished globes waiting to be mounted, strips of gore (painted paper) pegged across the room to dry, pots of brushes and paints, and more odd-sized spherical balls than one has ever seen. The workshop is now a bit chilly, but come summer, the studio opens into a rooftop terrace and becomes a place to mingle after work. The high ceilings and huge windows make for a beautiful and inspiring setting. Everyone is very friendly with each other and collaborates on projects from time to time. The camaraderie is unmistakable. They borrow things from each other, ask opinions on their work and exchange advice on the best way to do something. Amidst this friendly atmosphere sits Peter Bellerby, a kind of Jedi Master to his team of Padawans. A self-starter, Bellerby had no interest in globemaking other than his high school fascination for maps and cartography. But a frustrated quest trying to gift his father the perfect globe for his birthday would change all that. Faced with the option of a lazy version of a globe, where Borneo island appears as a blob on the map, or an antique that has long passed its use, Bellerby decided the way to go was to build his own globe. That was in 2008. JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016 11 FEATURES Today, the globes made by Bellerby & Co are valued for its bespoke design, modelled on a couple made in the War for Churchill and Roosevelt, and meticulous attention to detail. It takes pride in having revolutionised a globe design that sits on roller bearings, allowing for fluid movement that was not possible with the traditional axle and meridian methods. Every bit – from the painstaking process of papering to the detailed shading and painting – is done by hand. The former is the most arduous part because working with wet paper requires you to train your body and move your hands very slowly – ensuring there are no creases, overlaps or tear. If any of that happens, the goring process starts all over again. It’s easy to understand why a trainee normally requires a good half of the year to master this skill. 12 MUHIBAH And, it is not uncommon for the team to collaborate especially when it’s a big project. Bellerby remains very hands-on with the craft and the business. He trains his team to re-learn parts of globemaking that had been lost for centuries. He passes on the lessons his learnt so that this limited edition craft continues. For even after all this while, there remains no available training on this artisanal trade. In a world where GPS and Google maps seemed to have taken over, Bellerby & Co’s globes are a pleasant reminder that handcrafted globes remain in existence, letting us to daydream of faraway places and romanticise this world of ours. The advantage of this is you don’t have to stray from the well-worn tourist track to discover new experiences. A visit to the local museum, with an expert as guide, can bring a painting – and history of a country – to life, like no audio or museum guide could ever do. Vietnam makes for a great case study where art lends fresh eyes to the country’s history. While the world is all too familiar with the Vietnam War, it is rare to be able to peel back and see the lives underneath. Ultimately, Vietnam’s people are the best to narrate its journey and today, the country’s emerging artists become the storytellers. Images NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE NATION 38 MUHIBAH 01 Of the many award-winning museums in Singapore, the National Museum of Singapore holds a special place in the hearts of the locals. With a history dating back to its inception in 1887, the National Museum of Singapore is the nation’s oldest museum with a progressive mind. Its galleries adopt cutting-edge and multiperspective ways of presenting history and culture to redefine conventional museum experience. A cultural and architectural landmark in Singapore, the Museum hosts innovative festivals and events all year round – the dynamic Night Festival, visually arresting art installations, as well as amazing performances and film screenings – in addition to presenting thought-provoking exhibitions involving critically important collections of artefacts. 01 “Tree” installation in Transforming the Landscape section. Last year, in celebration of Singapore’s Jubilee, the Museum reopened its permanent galleries after a three-year redevelopment. All the National Museum’s permanent galleries have been carefully designed to incorporate elements of the themes and time periods, which they explore or are set in. The choice of colours, textures and specific design elements contribute to create immersive experiences for visitors. The designs for the display of artefacts also took into account the backstories and context so the audience can better appreciate their significance. JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016 39 FEATURES 02 03 40 MUHIBAH 04 For example, the Modern Colony gallery is designed to resemble a pre-war colonial bungalow with the scent of afternoon tea in the verandah to welcome visitors. There is also the contextual set-up of an HDB kitchen of the 1970s and 1980s, to show how the space and appliances on display reflect the modern conveniences and lifestyles desired by Singapore families. The galleries contain 12 interactive stations, including scent stations. There are over 60 multimedia stations located throughout the galleries that provide more information, stories, personal accounts and archival footages of significant historical events and important artefacts. These stations include a specially commissioned zoetrope for the Growing Up Gallery, among others. For the first time, the museum has also commissioned and located an art installation within the Singapore History Gallery as part of the gallery’s narrative. 02 The zoetrope tells the story of Singapore’s first three female Olympians. 03 A peek into a 1970s HDB flat. 04 The Ambient Scents and Scent Stations add another dimension to the museum experience. Swiss perfumer and fragrance maker Givaudan has sponsored a series of ambient scents and scent stations for the museum’s galleries. Ambient scents add a sensory dimension to the visitor experience in galleries. They greet visitors as they step into certain sections of the galleries, such as the “After Rain” scent in the Transforming the Landscape section in the Singapore History Gallery, and the “Afternoon Tea” scent that greets visitors to the Life in Singapore: Modern Colony Gallery. Some of the galleries also feature scent stations, such as the various floral scents in the Goh Seng Choo Gallery. The two scents in the Singapore History Gallery’s Transforming the Landscape section – Tembusu flowers and the polluted Singapore River – were conceptualised to convey the different milestones of Singapore’s environmental story. As part of the collaboration, Givaudan has also launched “City”, a new fragrance created especially for Singapore’s 50th year of independence. “City” is sold at the National Museum’s Museum Label shop and proceeds will be donated to the museum. With a refreshed layout and updated narrative, visitors can look forward to a more engaging and immersive experience; a bit like stepping back in time to the different periods of Singapore’s history. JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016 53 LIFESTYLE IN PERSON 2 nd TERM RB has extended your appointment as their Brand Ambassador. Tell us how the last year had been. 2015 had been an interesting year. Riding on my celebrity status in China, we (RB and I) visited various cities to meet my fans. We have been indirectly promoting Brunei as there are still many in China who is unaware of where Brunei is, and what we have to offer. Through these sessions, we have had the opportunity to present what Brunei has to offer and we are very confident we have created awareness for the RB Shanghai route. According to Dermot Mannion, RB’s Deputy Chairman, the number of tourists coming in from China has grown substantially in the one short year. For the China market this year, we are looking at more promotions and awareness campaigns via group and media partnerships instead of having meet the fans events. We know it takes time and we are glad and very encouraged to see larger numbers of tourists from China especially from Hong Kong and Shanghai coming in to Brunei not only as a stopover to Melbourne or other RB destinations via Brunei but to visit the Sultanate as well! What were some of the lessons you’ve taken from a year of partnering RB? It is one aspect to promote Brunei via RB, Brunei Tourism and travel agencies. However, I feel Bruneians too have to equally play their role because whenever a tourist or visitor comes to Brunei, all of us play a part to contribute to their overall experience. I am sharing my previous media experience in showbiz with RB to maximise our impact in promoting Brunei abroad. I feel very positive and encouraged about this year’s promotion activities. 54 MUHIBAH Appointed for the second year, RB Brand Ambassador Wu Chun shares his experience of the past year and his aspirations moving forward. How has this partnership benefited you individually? In some ways, RB is an endorsement of me in Brunei, and for Brunei. I might not be as well known in Brunei as I am overseas in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan so this brand endorsement with RB too allowed more Bruneians to know me better. I took two years off showbiz to spend more time with my family and my newborn son. So while ‘grounded’ in Brunei, I took the opportunity to spend more time doing things I have always wanted to do: concentrate on promoting a healthy lifestyle to Bruneians, launched a Taiwanese franchise bakery and hair saloon. We should celebrate our diversity. For example, while Brunei has now implemented the Syariah law, we still honour other cultures. During the Chinese New Year celebrations for example, His Majesty and the Royal Family joins the Chinese community at a gala dinner, visits our homes and join in the festivities. This unique Bruneian trait is what we should showcase to the world. What are your aspirations as second term brand ambassador for RB? His Majesty is placing emphasis on tourism with the restructuring of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) to the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT). This means tourism is given priority in economic diversification towards Vision 2035. This is in line with RB’s vision in promoting Brunei locally and abroad. As the recipient of the “Youth Award 2015” from His Majesty recently, I am further inspired to do my part as a Bruneian, as an international celebrity, and as a father and family man to realise this vision. Bringing awareness to the RB brand must be tough, particularly with competition from regional airlines including no-frills carriers. How do you face this challenge? I must say RB tries – which to me is the Number ONE attitude. RB has invested in a new fleet of aircraft – the Boeing Dreamliner and Airbus Neo. By the time RB takes delivery of all the aircraft, it will have the newest fleet in the region. Their recent rebranding exercise promotes more Bruneian traditions, heritage and culture. More local dishes have been introduced in the Sky Lounge and RB inflight meals such as nasi lemak, rendang and local cakes/desserts such as kuih batik and bingka susu. With the re-launch of the Royal Skies cards providing more benefits to its valued members, RB is also garnering more awareness via new member acquisition. RB is also spreading its reach by having code share flights with other airlines. Bruneians need to be ready, too. What experiences we have we need to try to put them in place and work with the government agencies and support His Majesty’s vision. Again, to be successful we need a collective effort: “Teamwork makes the dream work”. Last year you spoke of some of Brunei’s interesting features/places to visit for the first time visitor. What can you recommend a return visitor to Brunei do? Besides discovering the must-see sites in Brunei, I would like returning visitors to try something different. Instead of staying in hotels, they could perhaps experience a homestay or stay with friends in Brunei to truly experience the local culture, take part in Brunei charity runs to explore Brunei while running with locals, have a picnic and take a leisure walk on any of Brunei’s pristine beaches, go fishing, take a boat ride around the water villages, shop at the local traditional markets. These are some simple but interesting daily activities to ‘see’ Brunei. You have been busy. What projects are you working on? Last year, I was privileged to meet Michael Jordan in Shanghai as he marked the 30th anniversary of Air Jordan. Michael Jordan is a legend and he inspires me. Part of the celebration was an immersive basketball court simulator experience called “The Last Shot”. As an appreciation of loyalty to the brand, I was deeply honoured to be selected as one of the 12-team members of Team 23, alongside retired Chinese tennis player Li Na and retired Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, to shoot some balls. I have some showbiz projects in the pipeline. Right now, I am looking at a script for a Hollywood sci-fi movie. Filming starts soon in Australia for about one and a half months. I am looking forward to the experience. It will be my first English language film. Every project and person I meet, I learn something new. Learning never stops for me. It challenges me to keep improving and to be better. I also hope to work on a healthy lifestyle campaign with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Culture, Youth & Sports to instill healthy eating habits in children and help them be more mentally and physically active. Brunei’s statistics for coronary, stroke and diabetes are high. By educating them young, I believe we can change and lower those statistics for this and the next generations to come. One of my dreams is also looking to establish schools in remote villages in Tibet and dream of starting my own foundation. And last but not least, my family keeps me busy. Despite my busy schedule, I would dearly love to spend more time with my young family. If we surround our lives with love then everything will just falls into place. Available in two luxurious specifications – SE Dynamic and HSE Dynamic – the Evoque Convertible provides a four-seat interior, Jaguar Land Rover’s next-generation infotainment system, InControl Touch Pro and unrivalled all-terrain convertible capability. The Evoque Convertible retains the elegant design proportions of the five-door and coupé derivatives with its acoustically-lined fabric hood open or closed. Interior volume and luggage capacity also remains highly versatile, regardless of the roof’s position. Underlining Evoque Convertible’s position at the top-of-the-range, customers can choose from luxurious SE Dynamic or HSE Dynamic specification. In both cases, the convertible features a deeper, more aggressive front bumper with enlarged air intakes and slimline LED fog lights (HSE Dynamic only). 56 MUHIBAH Body-coloured side skirts visually lower the vehicle while the dynamic rear bumper houses distinctive twin exhaust outlets. A dynamic front grille with enlarged geometric mesh area, vent surrounds and a selection of 11 alloy wheel designs and finishes, ranging from 17- to 20-inches adds further design differentiation. The all-new alloy wheel designs are available for 18-, 19- and 20-inch fitments. At night, an eye-catching puddle-lamp graphic is projected from the base of the door mirrors. Uniquely featuring an outline of Evoque Convertible, the puddle lamps illuminate the ground around both front doors for maximum convenience and a highly distinctive appearance. Despite appearing identical to Evoque coupé below the glasshouse, the bodywork behind the front doors has been substantially re-engineered to accommodate the stowed roof mechanism. The upper portions of the rear fenders have been carefully redesigned to seamlessly integrate with Evoque Convertible’s packaging requirements, while an all-new tailgate and spoiler have been designed. The rear spoiler houses the LED stoplight and optimises aerodynamics to improve handling. The innovative hinge mechanism allows for a larger tailgate aperture, providing exceptional versatility. A wide range of accessories allows customers to add their own stamp of individuality, whether it’s for design or practicality purposes. The Evoque Convertible can be specified a cabin in machine-polished, Anodised Gear Shift Paddles, Anodised Red Rotary Shifter and Union Jack Sport Mat set. On the outside, Bright-finish Side Tubes; Carbon Fibre Side Vents, Bonnet Louvres and Mirror Covers; and stylised Valve Caps all create a vehicle that stands out from the crowd. The Evoque Convertible is capable of towing up to 1,500kg and for those needing additional practicality a detachable tow bar can also be specified. SE Dynamic derivatives feature perforated Grained leather seats in a sophisticated Ebony/Ebony dual-tone colourway. HSE Dynamic also offers three exclusive colourways in full Oxford leather: Ebony/Pimento, Ebony/Vintage Tan and Lunar/Ice. Luxurious eight-way electric memory seats (heated optional) are included in SE Dynamic’s standard specification, while HSE Dynamic derivatives feature 12-way electric adjustment. Optional 14way climate and massage seats can be specified. To maintain outstanding levels of crash protection, the Evoque Convertible features a number of engineering innovations: the vehicle’s A-pillars have been strengthened to ensure excellent roll-over protection; new under-body bracing maintains the torsional rigidity of coupé derivatives without impacting on Evoque’s off-road capability; and a RollOver Protection System, concealed within the rear quarter, deploys in 90 milliseconds should a roll-over situation be detected. The ATPC allows the driver to set a speed between 1.1mph to 19mph (1.8km/h to 30km/h), in forward or reverse gears, and without pedal inputs constantly monitors and adjusts vehicle settings to optimise traction and maintain progress. As such, ATPC reduces driver workload to simply steering the vehicle in challenging off-road situations where maintaining smooth, safe progress may otherwise prove difficult. The intuitive system is initiated via a switch in the centre console, controlled via the steering-wheel-mounted cruise-control interface, and can be overruled by pressing the accelerator or brake pedal. ATPC can even be used from a standstill in slippery conditions to ensure a composed getaway every time. Advanced fuel-saving technologies include piston rings and tappets coated with a low-friction finish; a sheet-metal exhaust manifold that shortens the engine warmup phase to reduce emissions on short journeys; and an advanced electronic management system for precision control over the combustion process. An advanced ZF 9-speed automatic transmission forms part of Evoque Convertible’s standard specification. Designed specifically for its transverse application, the ZF 9HP transmission features nine closely staggered ratios for excellent acceleration and peerless efficiency. Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage. It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures. Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing country. The nation became independent in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups. The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the nation for the past 600 years. www.bruneitourism.travel For more information on Brunei, email: [email protected] Images DAVID KIRKLAND/ BRUNEI TOURISM Brunei-Muara 1 2 3 THE OMAR ‘ALI SAIFUDDIEN MOSQUE Brunei Darussalam’s iconic landmark, the mosque was completed in 1958 and is named after the 28th Sultan, the late Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, who is referred to as the Architect of Modern Brunei.
