Alhamdulillah , (praise to Allah) in Q2 we safely completed the
Train-5 turn-around (TA) works and opportunity shutdown works
on Train-4. By adopting 24 hour working shift schedule, the TA
team managed to complete the shutdown duration shorter than
initially planned. Everyone did their bit to ensure we continue to
have a safe operation despite the high activity level during the turnaround.
Significant highlight this quarter :
Operational Excellence - global recognition and international
accreditation : Our TLS Laboratory did us , Brunei Darussalam / BruneiLNG, proud again
by achieving the status of “ Best Performer Laboratory 2009/2010 ” in Shell group for the
6th consecutive years in “ Gas Correlation Scheme” . Congratulations to TLS team for this
Operational Excellence.
Also , both BruneiLNG/Refinery successfully completed the Quality Management System
(QMS – ISO 9001) and Environment Management System (EMS-ISO14001) recertification
audits without any non-compliance reported. This enables BruneiLNG and Refinery to use
with pride the ISO accreditation certificate for another 3 years.
The above achievements denote a significant milestone for BruneiLNG/ Refinery staff in our
effort to remain as a top quartile organisation. This was made possible by the dedication and
professionalism of all involved. We will continue to embed the quality culture that makes us :
BruneiLNG as a “Preferred LNG Supplier” and Refinery - safe and reliable provider of refined
products in Brunei Darussalam
Let me share some of our Q2 key highlights.
HSSE and Quality: We continued our strong HSSE performance this quarter with 11 million
man-hours without LTI, whilst Refinery clocked zero TRC and zero process safety incident. I
am pleased to note a number of good initiatives were introduced during the TA works .
In conjunction with the Group Safety Day, both Brunei LNG and Refinery held safety events
separately to remind us on our roles in ensuring safety, and to share the lessons and learning
from the previous incidents in our workplace. The key message of this year’s Safety Day is
to implement the importance of our work culture that we should sustain “Doing the Right
Thing”. We are jointly responsible for the safety of the people in the plant, our asset, our
environment and the community around us . There is just no alternative.
Let’s continue to be vigilant and not be complacent for the rest of the year to sustain Goal Zero.
Please continue to
Exercise your right to intervene
Understand the hazards of our activities and making them known to our co-workers do
verify the activities that you are meant to supervise really gets done to your expectation
Exhibit zero tolerance on non-compliance
People:
In Q2, our Finance Manager, Hjh Ning-Lela Dato Paduka Hj Mohammad, was seconded
and subsequently appointed as the Deputy Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Finance.
Congratulations to Hjh Ning in her new role. We all can be proud of this significant
recognition of our people by HM Government. We welcome back Pg Haji Ali Pg Matarsat as
our Finance Manager until a permanent replacement is announced.
Congratulations to our 2009 OTPS intakes who had graduated from their “training” program
on 7th May 2011 and officially welcome them as part of the BruneiLNG workforce. The
significance of this batch of OTPS is our first batch of female operators who join operation on
shift schedule. They could be considered as the pioneering group of female operators in the
40 years history of Brunei LNG.
In order to secure our continuous supply of skilled and competent workers of the future, we
welcome a group of graduates who will face their first taste of working life under the Brunei
LNG Apprentice scheme. Also in June 2011, we have sealed an agreement with our new 2011
intakes of OTPS trainees with ITB. This enables the trainees to undergo their study in Plant
Engineering Foundation Programme at ITB for two years. The programme is the key building
block to enhance the competencies of our operations technicians and in line with our Human
Resource’s Strategy in building up the capacity and capability of the organisation.

Our co-operation with high institution such as ITB remains active with the Crown Prince
CIPTA Award competition (CIPTA – Creation, Invention, Process and Technological
Advancement). In Q2, we witnessed the official prize presentation ceremony of this
competition. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Pengiran Muda Haji Al Muhtadee Billah
consented to grace the event and presented the award to winners.
Business Environment /Outlook:
The aftermath of natural disasters that impacted Japan and the continued unrest in Middle
East continue to create uncertainty in the energy supply/demand picture and driven the
energy price. Our business partners in Japan are requesting us for increase supply of LNG
to support them in their recovery efforts. We are reviewing our activities in order to meet
the increase demand. No doubt some of you will be involved to optimise and stabilise our
operation to ensure that we assist our Japanese colleagues in their time of dire need. We will
continue to monitor the situation and liaise with our colleagues along the gas-supply chain to
take the necessary actions if and when required.
We are committed to deliver 212+ B-class cargoes safely. Let’s motivate each other to deliver
our promises. Insya Allah.
Together For a Better Future

Brunei LNG Is “Best Performer
Laboratory” For 6th Consecutive
Year In Shell Global Awards
Members of staff from the
Laboratory Services in Brunei LNG
having a group photo with their 6th
year award plaques.
Brunei LNG Laboratory was awarded Best Performer
Laboratory in the Gas Correlation Scheme for the sixth
consecutive year by Shell Global Solutions in a global
benchmarking exercise. Since the inception of the gas
correlation scheme in 2003, Brunei LNG Lab remains the only
laboratory to be accorded such honour. The repeat award is a
significant milestone for Brunei LNG and staff in maintaining
its reputation as a top quartile organisation, and is the result
of the dedication and professionalism of Bruneians with a
combined experienced of 190 man years.
The Laboratory Services won its first Best Performer award
in the Gas Correlation Scheme in 2004, and repeated this feat
in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009/2010. Such achievements are
testimony of the high quality and excellent service provided
by Brunei LNG Laboratory Services, and further reflects
the competent team, who also uphold the ISO/IEC 17025
accreditation.
The Gas Correlation Scheme evaluates the performance
of participating laboratories in evaluating and measuring
the compositions of different gas mixtures. Over fifteen
laboratories worldwide participated in the annual scheme,
including all Shell-advised LNG and gas plant laboratories.
Brunei LNG Laboratory’s success demonstrates its commitment
to ensure the highest level of technical integrity and analytical
services through competent, trained staff.
Commenting on the achievements, Two Tick Hiang, Gas Section
Leader at Brunei LNG Laboratory, expressed his excitement.
To him, the achievements
is a success for both the
Laboratory and Brunei
LNG as a company. The
achievements are evidence
of the Laboratory’s high
standards of productivity
and capabilities, and will
fuel Brunei LNG Laboratory to further successes in future.
The Gas Correlation Scheme was commissioned by Shell
Global Solutions in January 2003 with specialist industry
consultants - Scott Specialty Gases NL and the Netherlands
Meetinstituut (Measurement Institute of Netherlands,
NMi VSL). Scott Specialty Gases NL is responsible for the
preparation of gas mixtures and transportation of gas cylinders,
while the Netherlands Meetinstituut carried out homogeneity
testing and established reference values for data treatment and
reporting.
The laboratory is a pioneering laboratory in Brunei to
be accredited with ISO/IEC17025 from the Singapore
Accreditation Council in a Singapore Laboratory Accreditation
Scheme (SAC-SINGLAS), established in 2002 for chemical,
biological and environmental testing. Locals man the
laboratory, having undergone the Laboratory Technician
Progression Scheme which provides structured training to
produce competent and highly-skilled laboratory technicians.
This enables Brunei LNG Laboratory to enhance its analytical
services through innovative, up-to-date and sophisticated
technologies to both Brunei LNG and third party customers in
the oil and gas industry. These include Brunei Shell Petroleum,
Brunei Shell Marketing and the Block B Joint Venture (BBJV),
and other third-party customers, such as Brunei Power
Management Company and the British Garrison.
With the global award recognition, Brunei LNG will be
in a better position to secure its stand as the top quartile
organisation and a “Preferred LNG Supplier” for customers.

Celebrating The 6,000Th Cargo
Delivery To Japan
By: Lenny Ishak, BESC , Japan
The entourage having a group photo
onboard Abadi
Brunei LNG created a significant milestone in its 6,000th
cargo delivery with an auspicious event on 9th March 2011
onboard the Abadi at Higashi-Ohgishima (HOH) terminal.
Present were Mr Sasaki from Tokyo Electric Power Company
(TEPCO) as Higashi-Ohgishima (HOH’s) representative,
while Ms Lenny Ishak from Brunei Energy Service Co.
Limited (BESC) represented from Brunei LNG and Mr John
Treves, from Shell Japan (shipping) Limited and Captain Kim
Mockett, Abadi Master.
Ms Lenny Ishak extended her appreciation to everyone
involved in the successful delivery of this shipment as well as
previous cargoes. She highlighted that to ensure a continuous
business relationship beyond 2013, Brunei LNG through
Brunei Gas Carrier (BGC) had procured two bigger ships in
which one tanker named Arkat was commissioned in Brunei
in March 2011.
Similarly, Mr Sasaki in his message congratulated the 6,000th
successful delivery. The achievement spanned over 1,500 km
Mr Sasaki delivers his speech on behalf of the HOH Terminal
(with vessel of 250m) covering a one third distance between
Brunei and Tokyo. He reminiscenced the occasion of the
arrival of the first LNG vessel in HOH terminal in 1987. Since
then, the terminal has received 1,917 cargoes in 24 years from
various countries, of which 140 LNG cargoes came from
Brunei. Bebatik on 1st December 1997, was recorded as the first
vessel to arrive. On Abadi alone, 7 cargoes were received since
its first inception on 4th September 2002. He highlighted that
the achievement would not be possible without the dedication
of all relevant parties. He hoped that the safe working culture
would continue to be enforced in future.
The Higashi-Ohgishima HOH Thermal Power Station, besides
generating electricity for the Tokyo metropolitan area, plays an
important role to supply LNG to neighbouring thermal power
stations in Kawasaki and Yokohama. The event concluded
with memento exchange from both parties and a group photo

initiative encourages everyone
to turn off their lights for one
designated hour.
Time passes by daily and many do not realise that excess
energy is consumed in both the office and home, especially in
terms of lighting usage. It is only during events such as Earth
Hour or other energy-related celebrations, that people think
about energy conservation.
Every 26th March, Earth Hour is celebrated worldwide. In
Brunei LNG, Earth Hour was celebrated in a small initiative
where non-essential lights at the car park and access roads,
as well as at the main and administrative buildings were
switched off. At the Refinery, Administration and Engineering
buildings, parking lots, and Plant street lightings were places
where lights were switched off in full compliance with HSSE
and operational requirements. The initiative is part of the
corporate commitment to the environment and energy

hospital blood supply needs to be continuously replenished.
An individual has about 10 pints of blood in the body, hence
only one pint can be donated each time. The blood donation
interval for men is 3 months, while women are at intervals of
4 months depending on their fitness level. The blood bank in
Brunei requires a consistent supply of blood to ensure that
required blood types are available whenever needed. A healthy
individual aged between 18 and 60 years can donate blood via
the Blood bank in RIPAS hospital.
As a token of appreciation to successful blood donors, Brunei
LNG distributed “Recycle/Reuse Shopping Bags” at the end
of the session, which is in line with the “Government’s Green
Initiative – No Plastic Bags During Weekends”.

First Female Plant Operators
Gear Up To Excel
Results at the end of the foundation course revealed
that the female trainees were as good or even better
than their male counterparts. Ali Nordin Md Diah,
Head of Competence Development department,
commented that the new generation of women are
“very much willing and able” to match the challenges
of their male counterparts.
At the line of duty, trainees were divided into two
aspects of operations - Utilities and Process. Each
shift will receive two or three female trainees in
which each shift consisted of 30 male operators.
The First 10 Female Operator Trainees of Brunei LNG
In 2009, Brunei LNG created precedents in recruiting 10 new
ladies operator trainees. The so called “Only For Men Job” was
now a reality for these women, who are ready to take up new
challenges after undergoing a 2 years foundation Course in Plant
Engineering Certificate in ITB. The trainees were further trained
in Brunei LNG before joining the line in August 2011.
The female team members have demonstrated strong forte at
work, proving that they can even deliver more than their male
counterparts. This encourages the recruitment of female operators
besides ensuring equal gender opportunity and promoting
diversity in the organisation.
The female trainee LNG plant operators have set a new
benchmark in Asia Pacific and possibly the world. However,
the initial recruitment was tough as these women had to pass a
series of written and physical assessments, climb up ladders and
turn plant-sized valves. During the ITB course, they even had to
compete with male counterparts in academics and training at
Brunei LNG.
8
Quarter 2 | 2011
The trainees’ career progression does not stop with plant operators
as they are also given opportunity to further their study for HND
or even first degree while working with Brunei LNG. As part
of their learning process, they are also sent for short training
assignments, locally and overseas.
Brunei LNG also sees the trainees in a new perspective. “We
recognise this as a new experience, a new journey, so far as Brunei
LNG is concerned... as such that all the preparatory work needs to
be in place to ensure that not only our female operators are ready
to take up the challenge but more importantly (ensuring) the people
who will be working with them are also equally ready and prepared
to accept these new female operators. To ensure their ‘seamless
integration’ into the male dominated workforce, Brunei LNG
planned to hold a three-day workshop dubbed ‘New ways of being
team’.” Said the Head of Competence Development and added
that “This is an opportunity that we will miss if we don’t take up
the challenge to start recruiting female operators for Brunei LNG,”
– recognising the fact that more ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels students with
excellent results were female students”.

New OTPS Trainees Seal Agreements
The signing of Agreement takes effect for the new 2011 OTPS intakes
The Operative Technician Progression Scheme (OTPS) in Brunei
LNG and Refinery had a signing ceremony for 16 newly recruited
2011 intake OTPS trainees on 1st June 2011. Held at the University
Brunei Darussalam residential theatre, the Core, the ceremony
enables the new recruits to study their Foundation Programme in
plant engineering at the Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) for two
years.
The signing ceremony marks the beginning of the OTPS
progression scheme in making trainees part of Brunei LNG and
Refinery. Present was Corporate Affairs Manager Haji Mahri
Matahir who congratulated the newly recruited trainees and their
parents. He highlighted that the Foundation Programme in Plant
Engineering is a key building block to enhance the competencies
of operations technicians. The programme is in line with the
company’s Human Resource Strategy in building up the capacity
and capability of the organisation. He further highlighted that
since Brunei LNG and Refinery are known as high performing
organisations and pace-setter in the industry globally, competeny
and top class people would be required as growth engines to
continue the tradition.
Meanwhile, the Business Partner Lead (HCP) Hj Mohd Ayub Hj
Suhaili, spoke on the rules and regulations for trainees. Besides
the responsibility to look after themselves, the cooperation
from parents is also required in monitoring the progress of
the respective trainees. Parents are not encouraged to leave the
responsibility solely to the company, as it is a joint responsibility
from both parents and recruiter. Trainees are urged to comply
not only with the rules at Brunei LNG and Refinery but also to
do so at the residential area of the Core, especially to avoid from
engaging in immoral activities such as alcohol or drug abuse. He
reminded trainees to protect the company’s reputation. Failure to
follow rules and regulations and putting the company’s reputation
at stake would result in the discontinuation of the programme.
Since the establishment of the programme in 2006, 54 trainees
have graduated from the programme. By June 2013, there will be
70 graduates, who will then comprise over 50% of Brunei LNG’s
operators and continue the endeavour of human capacity building.
This is to ensure the availability of highly competent workforce

to operate the plant safely and reliably and to meet the demands

Bebatik on its nine years of TRC Free operation
The Bruneian LNG Fleet reached successful milestones this
quarter starting with the achievement of 1 year FAC Free
operations, s.s. Abadi having reached its 5th year of TRC free
operations and continues to operate without incident and, s.s.
Bebatik celebrating 9 years of TRC Free operations in midJune. This would not have been possible if it weren’t for the
dedication and positive behaviour of our seafarers towards
safe working practices onboard the ships. It is fitting that on
25 June 2011, in conjunction to the International Maritime
Organisation’s Day of the Seafarer, a celebratory event was held
at the Empire Hotel & Country Club and onboard each vessel
within the Fleet.
During this quarter we are also proud of the achievements of
Pg Shahirul Shaimee bin Pg Daud and Riley Hon Kok Siong
on their recent promotion to the Second Engineer rank. In
this new rank, they have become welcoming additions to
the senior management team onboard leading the seafarers
in the Bruneian LNG Fleet towards a more reliable and safe
operations in the years to come.
In similar respect, we congratulate Second Officer, Edwin Teo
for successfully obtaining the Chief Officer’s Ticket, opening
up a venue for him to eventually progress towards this rank
and join the senior management team onboard.
It was with much sadness that we bid farewell to s.s. Belais
in May 2011. Sold to Changjing Ship Recycling Yard, she
arrived in her usual immaculate state at the Yard in Jiangyin,
China soon following her final cargo delivery carried out in
Sodegaura, Japan.
Formerly known as the s.s. Gastrana, she is remembered for
the invaluable 38 years of services in transporting LNG from
Brunei to its customers, delivery made at its finest. She leaves
behind a legacy of having been awarded the CAP1 rating for
machinery and cargo systems and, reached a milestone of 1
year TRC Free in October 2010.

His family was attended to by Hjh Kamarjhan Hj Abdul Aziz,
Brunei LNG Community and Government Liaison who
brought them to the main building. From there Bahreen Dato
Hamzah, from Marketing department took over and briefly
explained some of the developments over the past 40 years.

Mr Yun Jin Sup (2nd from right) with his family at Brunei LNG’s office
Sweet memories of the past and amazement at the speed of
progress engulfed Mr Yun Jin Sup , a Korean retiree, when he
stepped back into Brunei LNG plant recently. Having left the
plant in 1974, his visit this time after 4 decades made him so
proud to see the developments within the plant. In reminiscing
his older days, “I am happy and proud to come to Brunei LNG
and bring my family along to show them where I used to work
in Brunei.”
Mr Yun Jin Sup had previously worked with Pacific Procon
Limited as a Special Area Foreman in 1971 for the construction
of Brunei LNG plant. He was primarily employed in the field
at the installation of stainless steel and aluminium pipe work.
He was also a qualified aluminium welder under section IX
A.S.M.E Code all positions and also had done supervisory work
on the fabrication of aluminium pipe work at the company’s
workshop. With his long experience in the pipe work, he
currently owns his pipe works and fabrication business in
Korea.
The trip was remarkable as it was a dramatic transformation
from the early days and for Mr Yun Jin Sup, a beautiful walk
down memory lane and remember his role in the creation of
Brunei LNG and Brunei Darussalam in general.
Mr Yun Jin Sup visited Brunei with his wife, two daughters, a
son in-law and two granddaughters. They were overwhelmed
with the warm hospitality at Brunei LNG.

Communicating Criticism
Constructive criticism is an art, a form of coaching – an essential aspect of communication that, if handled right, can lead to
excellence and strong relationships.
Here is how to do it right:
• Don’t do it while upset. Wait until you’re out of the intensity of the moment so you can see things in perspective.
• Don’t delay too long. Better discuss the situation while still relatively fresh, not weeks after the facts.
• Review your assumptions before talking. If you assume that an employee did not understand correctly, be open to the
possibility that you might not have explained it effectively.
• Be serious while delivering the criticism. Don’t smile. Smiling will give a confusing message to the listener.
• Share your intention and feelings and clarify your expectations. Explain that your intention is to achieve excellence
and/or maintain positive working relationship. Convey your expectations of the other person’s behavior or performance.
• Listen to the other’s views and perceptions and ask questions.
• Be specific. Describe the performance not the person.
• Be respectful. Don’t raise your voice, scold or talk at the other person.
• Put it in perspective. Be aware of, and mention the person’s past accomplishments and indicate your confidence in its
continuation.
• Move ahead. Stay positive.
Working Together as a Winning Team:
Nobody Wins Unless Everybody Wins!
“Bosses create teamwork, or kill it, by the way they treat people.”
Carl Sandburg
When people work as a team they create a work environment that makes work a pleasure and achievement a given. To
get them there, a company and its management need to create an environment of empowerment and sharing.
- Empowerment comes from being informed. Employees need to know what’s going on in the company, what
are its objectives, procedures and values.
- Empowerment comes from sharing responsibilities. An effective team leader spreads responsibilities around
by assigning various sub-team-leaders for communications, technology, customer relations, operations, etc.
- Empowerment comes from allowing team members room to exercise their responsibilities. An effective
leader sets the goals and the agenda and allows the team members to have the space needed for them to
exercise their own initiative and leadership.
- While empowerment comes from sharing responsibility, satisfaction comes from sharing credit. Great team
leaders share credit generously and frequently, and make sure that every individual on the team gets credit
for something.
- When building a team, try to select people who are compatible with each other, but not similar to each
other.
- Know the strengths and weaknesses of your team members and assign responsibilities accordingly.
- Teams work best where there is a sense of pride in the collective achievement of the group as a whole. One
rule to live by is:
Nobody wins unless everybody wins!

with a bureaucratic, counter-productive, and toxic work culture. It
