By adopting 24 hour working shift schedule, the TA team managed to complete the shutdown duration shorter than initially planned. Everyone did their bit to ensure we continue to have a safe operation despite the high activity level during the turnaround. Significant highlight this quarter : Operational Excellence - global recognition and international accreditation : Our TLS Laboratory did us , Brunei Darussalam / BruneiLNG, proud again by achieving the status of “ Best Performer Laboratory 2009/2010 ” in Shell group for the 6th consecutive years in “ Gas Correlation Scheme” . Congratulations to TLS team for this Operational Excellence. Also , both BruneiLNG/Refinery successfully completed the Quality Management System (QMS – ISO 9001) and Environment Management System (EMS-ISO14001) recertification audits without any non-compliance reported. This enables BruneiLNG and Refinery to use with pride the ISO accreditation certificate for another 3 years. The above achievements denote a significant milestone for BruneiLNG/ Refinery staff in our effort to remain as a top quartile organisation. This was made possible by the dedication and professionalism of all involved. We will continue to embed the quality culture that makes us : BruneiLNG as a “Preferred LNG Supplier” and Refinery - safe and reliable provider of refined products in Brunei Darussalam Let me share some of our Q2 key highlights. HSSE and Quality: We continued our strong HSSE performance this quarter with 11 million man-hours without LTI, whilst Refinery clocked zero TRC and zero process safety incident. I am pleased to note a number of good initiatives were introduced during the TA works . In conjunction with the Group Safety Day, both Brunei LNG and Refinery held safety events separately to remind us on our roles in ensuring safety, and to share the lessons and learning from the previous incidents in our workplace. The key message of this year’s Safety Day is to implement the importance of our work culture that we should sustain “Doing the Right Thing”. We are jointly responsible for the safety of the people in the plant, our asset, our environment and the community around us . There is just no alternative. Let’s continue to be vigilant and not be complacent for the rest of the year to sustain Goal Zero. Please continue to Exercise your right to intervene Understand the hazards of our activities and making them known to our co-workers do verify the activities that you are meant to supervise really gets done to your expectation Exhibit zero tolerance on non-compliance People: In Q2, our Finance Manager, Hjh Ning-Lela Dato Paduka Hj Mohammad, was seconded and subsequently appointed as the Deputy Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Finance. Congratulations to Hjh Ning in her new role. We all can be proud of this significant recognition of our people by HM Government. Time passes by daily and many do not realise that excess energy is consumed in both the office and home, especially in terms of lighting usage. It is only during events such as Earth Hour or other energy-related celebrations, that people think about energy conservation. Every 26th March, Earth Hour is celebrated worldwide. In Brunei LNG, Earth Hour was celebrated in a small initiative where non-essential lights at the car park and access roads, as well as at the main and administrative buildings were switched off. At the Refinery, Administration and Engineering buildings, parking lots, and Plant street lightings were places where lights were switched off in full compliance with HSSE and operational requirements. The initiative is part of the corporate commitment to the environment and energy A view of Refinery Plant during Earth Hour 6 Quarter 2 | 2011 The call to join millions of others across the globe during Earth Hour 2011 significantly conserved energy, in line with His Majesty’s call for energy conservation in our country. For added fun, an Earth Hour Photography Competition was held where 3 employees won best Earth Hour pictures. The celebration was communicated to all Refinery staff and business partners during the April Health Safety Security and Environment (HSSE) meeting, particularly highlighting environment commitments such as Recycle, Reduce and Reuse, Weekend No Plastic Bag Day, and Energy and Water conservation. An Earth Hour day quiz was also distributed to staff to generate awareness of environmental issues. The theme for this year “A Billion Acts of Green” had inspired the people worldwide generally and at the Brunei LNG and Refinery specifically. The celebration signifies a commitment to the environment during this global day of action. Blood Donation For A Good Cause Some members of staff of Brunei LNG at the blood donation campaign participated and were attended by 10 personnel and 1 medical officer from the Blood Bank. As part of Brunei LNG’s ongoing CSR projects, a Blood Donation Campaign in aid of the Blood Bank in Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, was held on 22nd April at the Brunei LNG plant in Lumut. 60 staff, some of them first new donors, The campaign promotes blood donation amongst employees and creates awareness on the importance of having sufficient blood bank stocks and how blood supply shortage could impact the healthcare system. As red blood cells can only be stored for 35 days and platelets (part of the blood that prevents excessive bleeding) can only be stored for five days, ... continued on page 8 Quarter 2 | 2011 7 ... continuation from page 7 BLOOD DONATION FOR A GOOD CAUSE hospital blood supply needs to be continuously replenished. An individual has about 10 pints of blood in the body, hence only one pint can be donated each time. The blood donation interval for men is 3 months, while women are at intervals of 4 months depending on their fitness level. The blood bank in Brunei requires a consistent supply of blood to ensure that required blood types are available whenever needed. A healthy individual aged between 18 and 60 years can donate blood via the Blood bank in RIPAS hospital. As a token of appreciation to successful blood donors, Brunei LNG distributed “Recycle/Reuse Shopping Bags” at the end of the session, which is in line with the “Government’s Green Initiative – No Plastic Bags During Weekends”. Blood bank staff prepares for the blood donor to get ready First Female Plant Operators Gear Up To Excel Results at the end of the foundation course revealed that the female trainees were as good or even better than their male counterparts. Ali Nordin Md Diah, Head of Competence Development department, commented that the new generation of women are “very much willing and able” to match the challenges of their male counterparts. At the line of duty, trainees were divided into two aspects of operations - Utilities and Process. Each shift will receive two or three female trainees in which each shift consisted of 30 male operators. The First 10 Female Operator Trainees of Brunei LNG In 2009, Brunei LNG created precedents in recruiting 10 new ladies operator trainees. The so called “Only For Men Job” was now a reality for these women, who are ready to take up new challenges after undergoing a 2 years foundation Course in Plant Engineering Certificate in ITB. The trainees were further trained in Brunei LNG before joining the line in August 2011. The female team members have demonstrated strong forte at work, proving that they can even deliver more than their male counterparts. This encourages the recruitment of female operators besides ensuring equal gender opportunity and promoting diversity in the organisation. The female trainee LNG plant operators have set a new benchmark in Asia Pacific and possibly the world. However, the initial recruitment was tough as these women had to pass a series of written and physical assessments, climb up ladders and turn plant-sized valves. During the ITB course, they even had to compete with male counterparts in academics and training at Brunei LNG. 8 Quarter 2 | 2011 The trainees’ career progression does not stop with plant operators as they are also given opportunity to further their study for HND or even first degree while working with Brunei LNG. As part of their learning process, they are also sent for short training assignments, locally and overseas. Brunei LNG also sees the trainees in a new perspective. “We recognise this as a new experience, a new journey, so far as Brunei LNG is concerned... as such that all the preparatory work needs to be in place to ensure that not only our female operators are ready to take up the challenge but more importantly (ensuring) the people who will be working with them are also equally ready and prepared to accept these new female operators. To ensure their ‘seamless integration’ into the male dominated workforce, Brunei LNG planned to hold a three-day workshop dubbed ‘New ways of being team’.” Said the Head of Competence Development and added that “This is an opportunity that we will miss if we don’t take up the challenge to start recruiting female operators for Brunei LNG,” – recognising the fact that more ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels students with excellent results were female students”. Meanwhile, the Business Partner Lead (HCP) Hj Mohd Ayub Hj Suhaili, spoke on the rules and regulations for trainees. Besides the responsibility to look after themselves, the cooperation from parents is also required in monitoring the progress of the respective trainees. Parents are not encouraged to leave the responsibility solely to the company, as it is a joint responsibility from both parents and recruiter. Trainees are urged to comply not only with the rules at Brunei LNG and Refinery but also to do so at the residential area of the Core, especially to avoid from engaging in immoral activities such as alcohol or drug abuse. He reminded trainees to protect the company’s reputation. Failure to follow rules and regulations and putting the company’s reputation at stake would result in the discontinuation of the programme. Since the establishment of the programme in 2006, 54 trainees have graduated from the programme. By June 2013, there will be 70 graduates, who will then comprise over 50% of Brunei LNG’s operators and continue the endeavour of human capacity building. Quarter 2 | 2011 15 Featured Article Communicating Criticism Constructive criticism is an art, a form of coaching – an essential aspect of communication that, if handled right, can lead to excellence and strong relationships. Here is how to do it right: • Don’t do it while upset. Wait until you’re out of the intensity of the moment so you can see things in perspective. • Don’t delay too long. Better discuss the situation while still relatively fresh, not weeks after the facts. • Review your assumptions before talking. If you assume that an employee did not understand correctly, be open to the possibility that you might not have explained it effectively. • Be serious while delivering the criticism. Don’t smile. Smiling will give a confusing message to the listener. • Share your intention and feelings and clarify your expectations. Explain that your intention is to achieve excellence and/or maintain positive working relationship. Convey your expectations of the other person’s behavior or performance. • Listen to the other’s views and perceptions and ask questions. • Be specific. Describe the performance not the person. • Be respectful. Don’t raise your voice, scold or talk at the other person. • Put it in perspective. Be aware of, and mention the person’s past accomplishments and indicate your confidence in its continuation. • Move ahead. Stay positive. Working Together as a Winning Team: Nobody Wins Unless Everybody Wins! “Bosses create teamwork, or kill it, by the way they treat people.” Carl Sandburg When people work as a team they create a work environment that makes work a pleasure and achievement a given. To get them there, a company and its management need to create an environment of empowerment and sharing. - Empowerment comes from being informed. Employees need to know what’s going on in the company, what are its objectives, procedures and values. - Empowerment comes from sharing responsibilities. An effective team leader spreads responsibilities around by assigning various sub-team-leaders for communications, technology, customer relations, operations, etc. - Empowerment comes from allowing team members room to exercise their responsibilities. An effective leader sets the goals and the agenda and allows the team members to have the space needed for them to exercise their own initiative and leadership. - While empowerment comes from sharing responsibility, satisfaction comes from sharing credit. Great team leaders share credit generously and frequently, and make sure that every individual on the team gets credit for something. - When building a team, try to select people who are compatible with each other, but not similar to each other. - Know the strengths and weaknesses of your team members and assign responsibilities accordingly. - Teams work best where there is a sense of pride in the collective achievement of the group as a whole. One rule to live by is: Nobody wins unless everybody wins! Introducing; The Bureaucratica, Inc., an old-fashioned organization with a bureaucratic, counter-productive, and toxic work culture. It can be offered as an example of what not to be and do.
