Fred Smeenk, Managing Director of BLNG spoke at the event where he highlighted key challenges for the company, which included maintaining BLNG’s performance, managing day-to-day activities and aspects of safety. Fred took the opportunity to remind everyone that ‘Safety is a Top Priority’ and staff needed to be more vigilant and be ready to intervene when necessary. All staff and contractors were presented with tokens of appreciation for their hard work in meeting this achievement. A handover of BLNG’s Golden Rules also took place along with mementos for contractors. Fred Smeenk presented staff and contractors with tokens of appreciation for their hard work in meeting this achievement BLNG roles out ‘Step Back 5x5’ Step Back 5x5 encourages staff to enhance attention to hazard management FOLLOWING the achievement of the combined one million manhours without TRC, the Health, Safety, Environment Quality (HSEQ) department organised the roll out of ‘Step Back 5x5’ on 23 November last year. The ‘Step Back 5x5’ is a tool for everyone to carry out daily hazard identification and control, which covers all routine or non-routine activities. It is also a complementary tool for normal Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Permit to Work (PTW) and Procedures and Work Instructions at the task implementation stage. ‘Step Back 5x5’ was introduced with the motto ‘Engaging your Mind before your Hand’ and ‘Think before you ACT’. It encourages all staff to enhance attention to Hazard Management and is aimed at shop floor workers doing routine activities, Simulated fire goes off at petrol station so that they can carry out simple hazard identification. It is hoped that this initiative will result in further improvement in safety performance. All employees and contractors were given a small card, which summarised the ‘Step Back 5x5’ for easy reference. Fire and Rescue personnel extinguish the ‘fire’ BRUNEI Shell Marketing Co Sdn Bhd (BSM) conducted an emergency drill at the Stesen Minyak Koperasi Ikatan Teluk Mewah in Mentiri on 30 November 2006. The scenario of the drill involved a customer’s car that suddenly caught fire at the forecourt ‘island’ while filling up. The drill continued with the forecourt crew attempting to extinguish the fire but to no avail. One crew member sustained a first-aid burn. The objective of the drill, called Exercise Mentiri, was to test and practise the communication link and response time between BSM’s Emergency Coordination Team and the relevant government agencies, particularly Fire and Rescue Services, the Royal Brunei Police Force and Ambulance Services. At the end of the exercise, the objectives of the drill were achieved with all parties demonstrating an excellent level of cooperation and coordination. BSM coordinates various emergency drills as part of its ongoing commitment to health, safety and environment (HSE). Salam, December 2006 / January 2007 3 From The BSP MD’s Desk Dear Colleagues I hope that it has been a very promising start for the New Year for you and your family. For me, the highlight of the first few days of 2007 was the opportunity to walk around our offices and to be able to wish as many of you as possible a Happy New Year. It was a great feeling, and there is a real buzz around the place these days with genuine care and enthusiasm. I was delighted to see so many of you at the staff cascade on 30 January. I was particularly happy to see the upbeat mood amongst our staff with so much to be pleased about. Everyone should feel proud of our outstanding performance of last year. On safety, our top priority, we were again able to deliver an excellent result, despite the many challenges and it is clear that this is the foundation for improved performance in other areas of the business. Oil production was above target for the first time in 7 years and the highest level in the last 25 years, and total gas sales were the highest ever in the company. These are indeed fantastic, company-wide achievements of which we should all be extremely proud. Really well done and do join us on the 30th to share in this happy occasion together. I believe there were three key things that made 2006 an outstanding year for us. Firstly, we set ourselves challenging but realistic targets, and focused on the really important things. Secondly, we developed effective strategies to achieve the targets and continued to work on areas requiring improvements. Thirdly, and most importantly, our people worked together as one Brunei Shell team, proving the point that “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. The challenge is now for us to make 2007 an even better year. Without this, 2006 will be seen as a one-off, rather than a demonstration of sustainable, strong performance by a world-class company. I know I can count on your continuing support to build on our past year’s achievements and to make 2007 even greater. Grahaeme Henderson shakes hands with the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dato Paduka Serbini bin Haji Ali at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health to establish a health promotion centre in Brunei. Witnessing the ceremony was the guest of honour, the Minster of Health (centre), Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman As always, I look forward to your feedback, and especially to any thoughts and suggestions for further improvement. Best wishes to you and your families for a safe, happy and successful year ahead. Breathing new life into mature fields: BSP all set to increase oil production from Seria Field BRUNEI Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd (BSP) scored another first when it successfully commenced production of oil from its Seria North Flank wells ahead of schedule just before the close of 2006. Grahaeme Henderson, Managing Director of BSP commented that, “The accelerated advance from exploration discovery to first oil in just 27 months is a remarkable feat by any measure. Key to this achievement was the application of cutting edge technology such as fish-hook and smart wells, combined with the company’s business improvement priorities strategy introduced in 2006.” “The project demonstrates the close cooperation across many working groups to complete an exploration well for early field production. The dramatic improvement to the production schedule was made possible as a result of the highest levels of staff collaboration, excellent project delivery, efficiency gains and cost savings, all without compromising safety standards.” Grahaeme further added that, “This development will certainly strengthen BSP’s oil position and contribute significantly to the future of oil production of Brunei Darussalam.” With an active production history of 77 years, the Seria Field is the oldest producing field in Brunei Darussalam, a distinction that coincides with BSP’s equally long and uninterrupted participation in the nation’s oil and gas industry and economy since 1929. Beginning late 2004, BSP scored successive oil strikes in the northern flank of the Seria Field through a series of exploration and appraisal wells, which were drilled using innovative technology. The Seria North Flank project is one of several hydrocarbon development projects aimed at breathing new life into mature fields, which the company has initiated recently. Together with major green field development projects, they are expected to further contribute to BSP’s overall high level of commitment to development investment in Brunei Darussalam in the coming years. 4 Salam, December 2006 / January 2007 Permanent Secretary visits Service Station THE Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance paid a working visit to the Bunut Service Station on 25 November to see the Fleetcard Management System in action. Salam, December 2006 / January 2007 9 Forum discusses environmental challenges BSP’s Managing Director, Grahaeme Henderson, presented a keynote address at a forum that was held to discuss environmental challenges on 28 November 2006 at The Empire Hotel & Country Club. The Asia Pacific Aviation Environmental Forum 2006 was hosted by Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) and officially launched by Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Majeedah Nuurul Bulqiah. The aim of the event was to heighten awareness of environmental challenges and communicate joint industry messages or data aimed at sustaining air transport’s development to secure its future growth. Starting off his keynote address, Grahaeme said, “Although this conference focuses on the aviation sector and its specific challenges of emissions, noise and waste, environmental issues are a universal challenge. We all have to work together to meet these challenges, not just as industry partners, but also as people.” To help set the scene for the discussion, Grahaeme shared thoughts on three topics: traditional coal-fired power stations, and as such, can play an important role in reducing emissions. Another strand of Shell’s global strategy on delivering cleaner fossil fuels is capturing and storing carbon dioxide. Once captured, carbon dioxide can be stored in underground aquifers, pumped into mature oil fields to enhance recovery, or used in industrial processes. On the subject of renewable energy, Shell is also investing in innovation to unlock new alternative sources of energy. Shell globally has already invested over US$1 billion in renewable energy to deliver cleaner energy sources such as biofuels, wind, solar and hydrogen. This makes Shell one of the world’s leading companies in a sector, which could satisfy a third of the world’s energy needs by 2050. Grahaeme Henderson, shared his thoughts on three topics related to environmental challenges ♦ The now indisputable need for action on the environment ♦ Examples of innovation and technologies, in BSP and Shell globally, which are being implemented to help achieve a sustainable energy supply ♦ Ways to improve environmental performance The now indisputable need for action on the environment Grahaeme underlined that the exponential growth in the demand for personal mobility of all forms is phenomenal and, although this brings huge benefits, we must also understand and address the resulting environmental impact. He said, “The flip-side of all of this growth in transportation and other sectors, is of course the negative impact on the environment. Satisfying the right to, and economic benefit of personal mobility and advancement, without harming the world in which we all live is one of the greatest challenges the human race has ever faced.” “Many industries are, of course, responding robustly with a range of measures designed to reduce their environmental footprint. There are a number of important actions that businesses can take e.g. reducing emissions, using energy more efficiently, minimising and recycling waste, and supporting conservation.” Examples of innovation and technologies, in BSP and Shell globally The approach at Shell globally to achieve a sustainable energy supply is two-pronged. Firstly, making the extraction and usage of fossil fuels much cleaner, and secondly, the development of renewable energy sources. “By 2050, two-thirds of the world’s energy will still come from fossil fuels. It is crucial, then, to make these fuels as clean and efficient, as possible, and to do our utmost to recover as much of this precious resource in a sustainable manner,” he said. While new finds continue to be made, it is the continuous application of technology and innovation in extending existing reservoirs, which sustains success. One example is the Seria field that is one of Brunei’s oldest reservoirs with more than 1.1 billion barrels of oil produced. Brunei is also a pioneer in the production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which is the cleanest and the fastest growing of all fossil fuels for energy markets. Burning LNG emits only half as much carbon dioxide as Ways to improve environmental performance The global environmental standard ISO14001 is the cornerstone of our environment programme at BSP. It ensures that environmental considerations become an integral part of all our decisions and activities. As an oil and gas producer, we face a number of environmental challenges in our day-to-day business, and ISO 14001 helps us consider them all carefully in an integrated and rigorous way. BSP first attained its certification in 2000 for one of its facilities. In November 2004, the company in its entirety was awarded ISO14001 certification. Grahaeme added, “The setting of environmental targets and measurement of performance is also critical, because it creates a mindset and expectation of continuous improvement. I am pleased to report that, we in BSP, have cut greenhouse gas emission by over 50 per cent from the 1996 levels by substantially reducing contributions from venting and flaring, and improving efficiency in our operations. Our waste production in Brunei Shell Petroleum has also fallen, with the volume of waste going to landfill reduced by over 50 percent as compared to the year 2000. Much of this has been achieved by reducing the volume of wastes generated, and introducing reuse and recycling programmes.” Grahaeme ended his address by saying, “I believe that we are very much at a crossroads in some key decisions regarding the environment. We have a significant opportunity, which we must take, as I am sure you will agree that protecting the future of our children must be the best reason for us to act now.” 10 Salam, December 2006 / January 2007 Eleven staff climb Mount Trusmadi The team successfully reached the summit around four in the afternoon The team is at the starting point, ready to begin their climb AS part of their healthy lifestyle programme, 11 members of staff from the West asset unit organised a trek up Mount Trusmadi, a mountain located in Sabah, in the third quarter of 2006. Mount Trusmadi, at 8, 669ft (2, 642m), is the second highest mountain in Sabah after Mount Kinabalu and is situated approximately 70km southeast of Kota Kinabalu between the districts of Tambunan and Keningau. Although it is not the highest mountain, Mount Trusmadi is reputed to have the best dawn view of Mount Kinabalu and is home to a specific type of pitcher plant, which is not found anywhere else. The Adventure Coordinator, Wafiy led the team along with Ismail and Wahid. The team also included Hasnal, Zulkiflee, Md Nazri, Abd Razak, Ali, Md Fazillah, Md Khairul and Tan Tai Juan as well as a group of four guides and porters. The team arrived and checked in at Tambunan Village Resort Centre prior to their climb. They began the trek early the next morning after a one and a half hour drive to the area and another twohour hike to the starting point. The hike was challenging due the constant attack by leeches. From the starting point, the group trekked another three hours to Taman Bunga - the campsite for climbers who stay overnight. Along the way, they saw the beautiful flora and fauna that dotted the landscape. Not long after, the group caught sight of the Trusmadi Range, which lifted their spirits to continue on. Just before noon, they reached the first of three peaks that they had to climb. By the time they reached the second peak, the trail became very steep. In some areas, the landscape was almost vertical and the group had to clamber up, finding footholds on tree roots and grasping anything that gave a firm hold. They reached the summit of Mount Trusmadi around four in the afternoon but there was a deluge of heavy rain and thunderstorms and the group was forced to make their descent back to the starting point. After climbing for almost 16 hours, they reached the base and although exhausted, felt relief at conquering the mountain. Adventure Coordinator, Wafiy said, “I am proud of all of us for successfully meeting this achievement and I am looking forward to the next destination and challenge. On the way back, we passed by the Sabah Crocker Range Park, which is where our next adventure will unfold.” Strong turnout at [email protected] OVER 700 people of all ages participated in the third Walk-aHunt [email protected] organised by BSM and held at the Taman Sir Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien in conjunction with the 36th Anniversary of the Renaming of Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan. Hundreds of participants gather at the start of the race The Walk-a-Hunt [email protected] was officially launched by the guest of honour, Awg Haji Nairul Anuar bin Haji Abdul Lahai, Chairman of the Brunei/Muara Municipal Board. Also present was Pg Haji Yasmin bin Pg Haji Mohamad, Managing Director of BSM. The event was fully supported by the Brunei/Muara Municial Board, Royal Brunei Police Force, Ministry of Home Affairs and the Management of the Yayasan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
