I thought it was a great suggestion. Thanks for all your prayers. Needless to say I was shocked when I found out I needed heart bypass surgery. The blockages were in a place that couldn’t be handled with stents. So, I am trying to schedule this as soon as possible so I can be back better than ever. Watch out – they tell me I’ll have more energy when I recover. Keep me in your prayers, please. There are a few things in which I want to encourage you to participate. First Communion training will take place the Saturday before Palm Sunday – April 12. Diane will be getting out more details, but the day should begin at 9 am and run until around 1 pm. All are welcome, contact Diane to make a reservation. We strongly encourage children that have not communed to begin with this training event. All the baptized are welcome at the table. This event is geared to young children but if you or your child has not taken communion and you wish to receive instruction, please come. The day includes a retelling of the Exodus story, re-enactment of the Holy Week narrative, and a walk through of the Holy Communion service and tasting of the elements. Mark Schweizer is coming Sunday evening, May 4th. He has planned an evening that includes a participatory “Radio” broadcast that includes the cast of characters from his book as well as some of the fun music he has written. There will be time with the author and good time will be had by all. The evening will include dinner together and I would encourage us to hold a jell-o mold competition. Come join Mark for an evening of fun. His books are available in the library or electronically as e-books. I encourage you to read them in order, the first book is The Alto Wore Tweed. Lastly, know that while I recuperate you will all be in my prayer. I love being your pastor and we have many years ahead of us. Please help Susan, Diane, and the Music staff by volunteering to help. God’s peace, Pastor Scott The Way of the Cross has always been a powerful part of the Christian Faith tradition. The early practice of Christians attempting to retrace and walk the path of Jesus has been a treasured way to commemorate the Passion and Death of Christ. The Stations presented in our sanctuary are original art by Nicholas Markell. It has been interpreted through the work of our Liturgical Arts Committee and the work of Barbara Williams Ellertson. I encourage you to find the time and meditate on the imagery and the Biblical texts. A booklet entitled Biblical way of the Cross by David Haas is available to guide your meditation. These booklets may be found on the welcome center. Please use them for meditation and leave for the next person to use. Fowler Footnotes by Roberta Lloyd, Librarian German theologian and martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born February 4, 1906. After spending some time (1930-31) studying at Union Theological Seminary in New York, he received his doctorate in theology and went on to lecture at Berlin University. As early as 1933, Bonhoeffer was opposing the Nazi regime and assisting Jews to leave Germany. Dismayed with the established church’s non-action against the Nazis, Bonhoeffer left Germany to pastor a community of Germans living in London. He returned to Germany in 1935 to teach in the underground seminary of the Confessing Church. In 1939, after many conflicts with the Gestapo, friends arranged to send him to the safety of the United States to teach at Union Theological Seminary, but he stayed only a short time. He felt compelled to return to Germany so he could participate fully in the suffering of his nation and lend support to the new Germany that would arise when the Nazis were defeated. Upon his return, the government forbade him to publish, teach or speak publicly. Charged with conspiracy, Bonhoeffer was arrested and imprisoned in 1943 and hung on April 9, 1945. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was critical of “religion” that consisted only of practices performed in church on Cross Connections Sunday mornings. He advocated a “religionless” Christianity that focused on serving others and participating in the “suffering of God in the life of this world.” Fowler Library owns many books by and about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, including his Letters and Papers From Prison and The Cost of Discipleship. Preschool Pitter Patter by Amanda Stoen, Director In late February, I attended the ELCA’s annual pastor and school administrator conference in Jacksonville, FL. What an amazing experience it was! I met and networked with Lutheran early childhood educators from all over the country. I attended several different sessions relating to early childhood education and the importance that our preschool plays in our community. The keynote speaker was Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb, Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem (yes, that Bethlehem!). His message was quite inspirational, focusing on spreading the mission, God’s kingdom, not the individual church. It reminded me of a recent sermon at St. Paul’s telling us to spread our light out into the world. We and our mission are always a work in progress. It is always so exciting to return from a conference full of energy and ideas. We discussed ways to support our teachers through really listening and observing and how important it is to work as a unified team. I attended a session on the importance of play and the brain. We do a lot of play at the preschool – it is the job of children! I look forward to sharing these new ideas with our preschool and with you. Building and growing a strong preschool takes many hands and I feel incredibly blessed to have the support of this congregation. Stephen Ministry Update Your Stephen Ministry team is well into the next part of our work together. Many of our Care Givers have been paired with Care Receivers and are using the skills they have learned and the gifts that God has given them to walk with others and be both listening ears and open hearts. We are thankful for their service in Jesus’ name and continue to ask you to hold them in prayer as they multiply ministry in this place. 3 April 2014 Do you know of someone who could benefit from the type of one-onone companionship that Stephen Ministry provides? Whether the issues are medical, personal, or spiritual, people with needs large or small, short-term or chronic, sometimes don’t have access to the kind of Christian relationship that Stephen Ministry can provide. Remember: The relationship that is established is entirely confidential. Only the Pastor, the Referrals Coordinator (currently Judy Kraska) and the care giver her or himself know the name of the care receiver, unless the care receiver chooses to reveal his or her participation. Please let one of us know if you or someone you know would benefit from this ministry. And a blessed Lent as we all journey to the cross and empty tomb. Your Stephen Leaders, Nancy Anderson, Judy Kraska, Audrey Busch, Deborah Steed, and Pastor Anderson New Year – New Name – Same Christian Love! The Chronic Illness Healing Group recently adopted a new, more welcoming name for its ministry. It is now entitled Wholeness Through Caring. Its goal is to serve Christ by providing healing presence to those who have prolonged physical, mental health and/or spiritual challenges. This fellowship gathers twice monthly to provide caring Christian support to one another as they share about their experiences along the road to better health. Katherine Circle of the WELCA Katherine Circle’s April program will be the Stations of the Cross. It will be done with the help of Margaret Simis, Penni Perrotte, Debbie Keller and Jim Sackett. It will be a “play” depicting the journey that Jesus makes to the cross. It will remind us that as we trace Jesus’ journey, we take up our own cross, the symbol of our own passion, and bear the imprint of His cross in our own. It will be a reminder that there will be a Sunday morning, but not without the journey Cross Connections through Good Friday and the Cross. We will meet at the church on Tuesday, April 15 at 10:00 am. Hostesses are Phyllis Jenkins and Lois Kenzie. Pew supplies will be filled by Phyllis Jenkins in April. Acolyte-Crucifer Coordinators Coordinators are needed for acolytes and crucifers at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am worship services. Duties include: managing a sign-up schedule, sending reminder emails, being present prior to worship time to assist acolytes and crucifers with robes and review of duties. Adults and youth are both invited to sign up to serve as acolytes and crucifers. Training will be available. If you are interested in coordinating at either service, see Pastor Anderson or Diane Archer. An Evening with Mark Schweizer Have you had a chance to read one of Mark Schweizer’s books in the library? Here is a book description of: The Cantor Wore Crinolines Hayden Konig has always been lucky. As a detective, he’s top-notch. As the organist at St. Barnabas Church, he’s been tickling the ivories for close to twenty years. He’s rich, his wife is the best looking woman in three counties, he lives in a big cabin in the woods – he has a dog, a gun, a CD collection, and a truck. Yet, he is not content. He has one dream left to realize. He longs to be a noir detective writer like his hero, Raymond Chandler. In a desperate attempt to channel some of the master’s wordplay, Hayden has purchased Mr. Chandler’s old typewriter — a 1939 Underwood No. 5. It doesn’t help. Even as Hayden works on his new opus, he must deal with other, more pressing problems. Groundhog Day isn't usually a liturgical holiday, but when the new Anglo-Catholic priest decides that a Candlemas Evensong on February 2nd is in order, what can the choir do but comply? As "St. Groundelmas" approaches, three dead bodies turn up, and the clues point to a trashy murder mystery being read by the Blue Hill Bookworms. Will the St. Germaine PD get everything wrapped up before the groundhog sees his 4 April 2014 shadow? "Hey,” says Hayden, "how hard can it be?" There are more – check them out in the library. < The Alto Wore Tweed < The Baritone Wore Chiffon < The Tenor Wore Tapshoes < The Soprano Wore Falsettos < The Bass Wore Scales < and others Plan on attending “An Evening with Mark Schweizer” at St. Paul’s on Sunday, May 4. A dinner will be served and you will enjoy a short Radio Mystery that evening, presented live on stage in Trinity Hall by Mark and St. Paul’s members. If you are interested in participating in the mystery or singing in the chorus (singing such songs as Here’s To Eve, Men, Men, Men, and Missa di Poli Woli Doodle Kyrie), contact Tina Bessias. A free-will offering will be accepted. WCPE (89.7 FM) and theclassicalstation.org If you have listened to FM station WCPE of Wake Forest, NC on Sunday mornings, you may have heard St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, together with three other Triangle Area churches acknowledged for supporting the program. This came about through donations of members to one collective contribution to the station in the name of the congregation. We are in the process of collecting funds to repeat this donation for another year. We need to collect the $1,000 of gifts in the next couple weeks to make our gift to WCPE. If you are interested or if you have questions, please contact Dick Havill at 919-929-2755 or [email protected]. To make a contribution, please make your check payable to WCPE and give it to Dick for delivery to the FM station. New Baby!
