PIETRO G. PORCELLI
MORE THAN JUST A PORT OF CALL
SCULPTOR
Welcome to the Twenty Second edition of ‘The Fremantle Book’
There is a lovely sculpture in King’s Square by Greg James, of
Pietro G. Porcelli, this state’s first notable sculptor; a recognition that
several of Porcelli’s own sculptures are on public display in Fremantle.
Fremantle is Western Australia’s principal port, situated 20kms from the
capital, Perth. Fremantle (or Freo as it is known to the locals) is ideally located
at the foot of the Swan River, on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Fremantle has a definite cosmopolitan feel to it. The sidewalk eateries,
galleries, shops and general atmosphere all reflect the many cultures that are
blended into the everyday lifestyle. There is always something happening
in Fremantle, attracting around 700,000 visitors annually. Locals are either
planning, participating in or recovering from the array of festivals and
activities held to celebrate this centre of cultural creativity.
If you’re travelling from Perth to Fremantle, Transperth can get you here
without the hassles associated with bringing your car.
A CAT bus service is available once you are in Fremantle. Transperth trains run
every 15 minutes between Perth and Fremantle, 7 days a week. Alternatively,
Transperth’s bus service can bring you to Fremantle from anywhere in the
Perth metropolitan area.

C.Y. O’Connor
Migrant Children - Charlie & Joan Smith
Porcelli was born in Italy in 1872, but went to Sydney as a very young child
with his father. He studied art in Sydney and in Naples. He graduated from
the Royal Academy of Naples with two gold and three silver medals. He
returned to Sydney but found that city deep in depression and moved, with
his father , to Western Australia in 1896 where the gold boom had brought
prosperity. They settled in Fremantle.

Between then and 1929, Porcelli completed a number of commissioned
memorial statues, religious statuary and war memorials in Perth, Fremantle
and country towns. In 1829 he moved to Melbourne to work on twelve panels
for the Shrine of Remembrance, returning to Perth in 1939 where he died four
years later.
His works in Fremantle include: The C.Y. O’Connor Statue (in front of the
Port Authority Building), the Tom Edwards Memorial (King’s Square), the
Panter, Goldwyer and Harding Memorial (the Esplanade), a reredos panel,
‘The Last Supper’(Christian Brothers’ Chapel), the Marmion Memorial (near
the Proclamation Tree), and a relief head of Christ (Parry Street frontage of St
Patrick’s Church)

History
The past has never really left this city, visitors and residents
alike can feel the atmosphere of yesteryear. Fremantle was
primarily a port where convicts were landed and detained
but thrived into an independent city. Taking a walk through
the streets, you realise its full of history, everywhere you
look there are beautiful Victorian buildings reminding you
of Australia past. Convict labour built the foundations of this
characteristic city, and evidence of this is scattered all around
from the Roundhouse to the magnificent Prison itself.
Fremantle was founded on the 2nd of May, 1829 when
Captain Charles H Fremantle claimed the West Coast of
New Holland (Australia) as British territory. The first British
settlers arrived in early June 1829 under Governor James
Stirling.
The Roundhouse, the oldest building in Fremantle, the
building was designed by the colony’s first civil engineer,
Henry Reverley. In its infancy it was used as a gaol for
minor crimes, however the first execution took place on the
gallows just a few yards north of the entrance.
1885 saw the opening of the Town Hall, a splendid
architectural masterpiece which overlooks St John’s Church,
Kings Square and watches over it’s city.
A large number of ‘migrants’ came to these shores from all
over the world in search of a new life, arriving in Fremantle
after many weeks at sea. The Welcome Walls (situated at the
Maritime Museum) mark the arrival of many families.
The Western Australian Maritime Museum is the jewel in
the crown of one of Australia's most significant historic
maritime precincts. This precinct in the west end of
Fremantle stretches from the Maritime Museum’s convictbuilt Shipwreck Galleries beside Fishing Boat Harbour to
the Maritime Museum on the edge of Fremantle Harbour,
and links to the exciting development on the Fremantle
Waterfront.
Today Fremantle is a warm and inviting city offering every
thing anyone could want. Combining the past with the
present, Fremantle is a unique city with a unique story to tell.

Roundhouse Fremantle
The jewel in the crown of Fremantle’s historic Arthur Head Reserve,
the Round House is Western Australia’s oldest public building,
dating back to 1831. Located at the western end of High Street
this building is however neither round nor a house but 12 sided
(dodecahedron) and was originally built as a Gaol. It is now a tiny
museum in Western Australia’s most recognisable building.
Visit between 10.30am and 3.30pm and be welcomed by Round
House Guides, volunteers from the West Australian community
donating their time every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day.
A voluntary gold coin donation is earmarked for refurbishing
displays. Past donations have established the daily One O’clock
Cannon firing and Time-ball ceremony, installation of a replica
curfew bell and pillories within the yard. See the 1832 panoramic
watercolour of the Round House dominating the fledgling Swan
River Colony in one of the Warder’s rooms.
Complete the Round House story by visiting the Aboriginal Cultural
Centre and the galleries located in historic cottages further along
Captains Lane. A landscaped path leads down to Fishing Boat
Harbour or descend fifty five steps back to the High Street and use
the Whalers Tunnel as a shortcut to Bathers Beach.

Rottnest Island
Just 19.7 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle, Rottnest Island is 25 minutes by
ferry from Fremantle or 15 minutes by plane from Perth. As an A-Class Nature
Reserve, the protected Island is the perfect year-round escape from the big city.
Featuring a casual atmosphere,
picturesque scenery and some of
the world’s finest beaches and bays,
Rottnest Island is Western Australia’s
very own Island getaway. Rediscover
life’s simple pleasures as you follow
a sandy track, discover intriguing
history and wildlife and meet the
famous quokkas. Take your pick from
a smorgasbord of activities with 63
stunning beaches and 20 secluded
bays and kilometres of breath-taking
Wadjemup Walk Trail. Thrill-seekers
can jump on the Segway and Ecotours or just relax at one of the
Island’s ocean-front restaurants or
scenic picnic spots.
The Rottnest Island Marine Reserve
is a haven for the enthused snorkeller
and daring divers with limestone

the sea level was thought to be at
least three metres higher than the present day. The Island’s coastline is also dotted with
scattered shipwrecks and holds a far greater range of habitats, marine plants and animals
than that of the adjacent mainland coastline. Extensive seagrass meadows occur around
Rottnest Island, and with nine species, it is second only to Shark Bay in species diversity. Fed
by the Lewin Current, the Island’s reef system provides a home to an range of marine wildlife
including migrating humpback whales, bottle-nose dolphins, New Zealand Fur Seals and
Australian sea lions.
Rottnest Island is also rich with significant cultural heritage. First records of human occupation
of the Island are from more than 6,500 years ago when it was still attached to the mainland, and
Aboriginal people inhabited the area. Once split from the mainland, Local Aboriginal people
came to know the Island as “Wadjemup” meaning ‘place across the water’. The first Europeans
to discover the Island were the Dutch in 1658. Since its initial European exploration from the
17th Century and its settlement in 1829, Rottnest Island has been through a number of stages
of development and has been used for a variety of purposes including the site of an Aboriginal
prison, an internment camp in World War 1 for some 1300 Germans and Dalmations and a
strategically important military installation in World War 2. Visitors can experience and learn
about the Island’s intriguing Aboriginal, European, colonial, maritime, military, recreational
and social heritage on Rottnest Island through free history and wildlife tours run by the Island’s
friendly Rottnest Volunteer Guides.
Although not new to the island, Rottnest Island’s
historic sites definitely fly under the radar. Most
people visit the island for the breathtaking beaches
and summer activities, but autumn is the perfect time
to revisit Rottnest Island’s rich history and spring is
the best time to experience the Island’s incredible
flourishing wildlife. Whether you cycle, walk, bus,
swim, snorkel or just run barefoot through crashing
waves, you’ll love exploring this majestic island gem.
...it’s up to you.

The refurbished B Shed Ferry Terminal and café on Victoria Quay has been recognised for its
heritage qualities.
Western Australia’s economy depends on
trade. Fremantle is the State’s principal
general cargo port, handling 73 per cent
by value of WA’s sea-borne imports and 11
per cent by value of its sea-borne exports.
Total trade through Fremantle Ports in
2014-15 was 35.7 million mass tonnes,
worth more than $28.4 billion.

cargo; and the Outer Harbour, 20km south
of Fremantle at Kwinana-Cockburn Sound,
where there are deep water facilities
to handle bulk cargoes such as grain,
petroleum, liquid petroleum gas, iron ore
and alumina.
The Port of Fremantle operates 24 hours
a day, seven days a week and provides
navigation, berthing and general shipping
services to all visiting vessels.
High standards of economic and
environmental performance and working
closely with the local community are the
foundations on which Fremantle Ports
conducts its business. Maintaining these
standards is seen as critical to the working
port’s sustainability over the long term.
Most of Western Australia’s exports of
manufactured goods and value-added
food products pass through Fremantle,
as do most of the consumer goods and
motor vehicles that are imported by sea.
Trade with East, South East and Southern
Asia amounted to 64 per cent of total port
trade in 2013/14, compared with 43 per
cent in 2000/2001.
Residents and visitors to Fremantle have
access to the Inner Harbour at the western
end of Victoria Quay, which includes the
world-class Maritime Museum and berths
for the ferries that run regularly to Rottnest
Island and Perth. The refurbished B Shed
Ferry Terminal, which won a WA Heritage
Award in 2011, provides excellent facilities
for ferry passengers. Refreshments are
available in waterside settings at B Shed
and E Shed.

Harbour in Fremantle which currently
handles the container trade and general
