I hope you can spend part of the Christmas season together with us at church. Liselotte LUCIA PAGEANT 2015 Another year has nearly passed, and it is once again time to remind all children and teens of the traditional Lucia Pageant. It is so important for all to attend the upcoming rehearsals on November 15th, 22nd and 29th at approximately 11:45am. We are hoping some of the children from Danskskolen will join us so we can sing “Dejlig er den himmel blå” in Danish together! The festive Lucia Pageant will be part of the church service, the second Sunday in Advent, December 6th at 4:30pm. Following the service we will gather downstairs to enjoy the advent wreaths, a frikadelle supper and some “julehygge”. See below to find out about the entertainment planned for the evening. Liselotte FUTURE STARS ON STAGE !! Some of our talented young people are going to share their skills on stage! If you are 20 or under and can dance, sing or play the piano or another instrument there will be one rehearsal on November 29th either from 9:45am to 10:30am or from 12:45pm to 1:15pm. The shepherds heard the angel’s news, The Wise Men travelled far, And there was wonder, joy and hope For all who saw the star. Now, Father, once more help us seek The joy of Christmas night, And spread the news across the earth Of endless life and light. And, Father, may we share Your love In heart and soul and mind, And send Your blessings round the world With peace for all mankind. And as in 2013 and in 2014, it has been a pleasure to be here, at the Danish church in Toronto. The church continues to attract a lot of people, and I think we have reason to be proud of that. For the Thanksgiving dinner, which we just had, there were almost more people had signed up than there were seats. It is great to see that the Danish church is still going strong. A lot of volunteering hands are making that happen. Now Christmas is coming up and we are hoping to see a lot of people as usual for our Christmas bazaar, for Lucia, and for our Christmas play and Christmas party. Did I forget Christmas Eve? We hope to see you here, if not for all of these occasions, then for some of them. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Pastor Kenneth Please enjoy a quiet moment reading “Juleevangeliet” on page 14 ! 2016 MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION It is time for our annual membership drive. The 2016 membership registration form was included with this newsletter. Anyone 18 and over can be a member of our church upon request as long as you are willing to participate in our services and other church activities, and agree to follow our bylaws (copies available upon request). We have recently applied to incorporate under the Not For Profit Canada Act and hope to have that confirmed in time for the AGM in March 2016. Once that is complete there will only be one type of membership. All members will be voting members, but must pay their annual $15 levy upon registration. If you choose not to join as a member, you will still be welcome as a guest to attend and participate in any and all of our events throughout the year – just not at any membership meeting. You are either a member (if paid up and which we prefer to maintain a strong and healthy membership base), or a guest with all the same privileges except voting rights. Extra sign-up forms are available at the church if needed. It is important that we have written proof of your intention to be a member, as this is required by law. Please take this opportunity to update any address or e-mail changes or corrections, and to sign up as a member. Levies are tax deductible and can also be taken from current donations if so desired. Please mark the form accordingly. This is also an opportunity to make an extra donation to the church as we are fully self-funded (i.e. do not receive any funding from Denmark), and rely on our gracious donors and other fund raising tools. Remember to register by early December to ensure voting rights at the next AGM in March 2016. Feel free to speak to any Board member if further information is required. 9 PASTOR’S WIFE’s Another page is turned in the year calendar book. When I sit here in my kitchen and yet again look out on the falling leaves that is how it feels; as if time has gone by as quickly as the turning of a page. But when I think closer and look back a lot has happened. Can you imagine starting the year with a big surprise? That was what I did. I was very pregnant and very much in my own thoughts when one day after service I came down to find the greatest surprise Baby shower arranged just for me (and Kenneth I guess)! Thank you all so much, it was a wonderful morning, one I will never forget! This year winter held back a little. We didn’t get the really cold weather till middle January. Exactly at the same time Winnie was born. That very morning was the first time we had minus 19 degrees. I remember lying with her in my arms looking out the window and seeing the ice covering every surface and glittering in the sun. It was a cold winter, colder than last year! When my parents visited in February we had minus 27 degrees and Kenneth drove us to the subway, so little baby Winnie didn’t have to go out into the cold weather. But the cold didn’t stop you guys from sending cards and gifts with warm words and thoughts. It was quite overwhelming and I still don’t know how to thank you properly. I truly have never gotten so many presents in my life! The winter held on, we waited and waited for those signs of spring. On CORNER Facebook friends and family in Denmark posted pictures first of Snowdrops and Crocus, later it was Daffodils and still we were covered in deep snow. But when spring came in May, it came so quickly that you almost didn’t notice and then it was summer. I don’t think I have ever had a summer as long as this one. When the whole family, Kenneth, Winnie, both dogs and I went to Denmark in the middle of June we had already had a month of summer in Toronto. In Denmark they were not so lucky. It was 9 degrees when we came and windy and rainy. We hadn’t brought enough warm clothes. It changed though and for Winnie’s Baptism on the 27. June we had the most beautiful sunshine and a lovely day with all our family and friends. There were lots of kids running in and out and back and forth to a playground nearby. At one point my little nephew came to me and asked; “Mette is Eddie allowed to go to the playground alone?” “No” I replied, “Eddie can’t go alone.” “Well” my nephew answered, “he just went.” So we had to send someone looking for our little dog and sure enough he was on the playground playing with the kids. Winnie is so lucky! She got to have both a Baptism and then a “Fremstilling” in the church here. She even wore her baptism dress twice! And what a day we had! Winnie loved seeing you all in church and did her best to charm you when she waved to her Fadder Rikke. 10 The weather was even warmer than at her baptism in Denmark and it was perfect for real European hotdogs and watermelon salads! Thank you to all of you who came and celebrated with us and thank you so much to the people who helped make it a lovely day! Our trip to Denmark was not our only big trip this year. In August DSUK had their American Convention in Vancouver. We have long had our eye on the west coast of this vast and wonderful country since everybody has been telling us how beautiful it is. And it was! The Conference was held in New Westminister and we had a room right down to the Fraser River. It was amazing to see all the little tug boats transporting long rows of giant wooden logs down the river. The conference was very interesting and it was nice to meet Danish congregations from all of America and especially our Danish Canadian colleagues. We had a couple of days alone as well and walked all the way around Stanley Park. Unfortunately it rained a lot and there was a rainstorm that left big parts of Vancouver without power (We know what that is like) so when we came back to 27 degrees and sunshine in Toronto we were happy to be home. As always, as soon as August is over the church gets back into full swing with a “Welcome Back Fest” and this year was no exception. We had the folkedansere to perform in their new beautiful dresses from Denmark and if you have not seen them yet, come see them soon, they are incredible! Since Welcome Back fest we have had lot of great arrangements in church. One of them was the Octoberfest in Golden Age Club. What a party! I think Winnie danced for an hour in her fathers lap. Well, we all danced and what a sight it must have been when we all did the chicken dance! Now Thanksgiving Dinner is very close by with pork roast and æblekage and wonderful entertainment! It is one of my favorite parties in the church and I can’t wait to see all of you there. Soon after that we’ll have our new Halloween Service! I wonder if you can get costumes for a 9 month old? We shall do our best to come dressed to the occasion! November will be bustling with busyness for the Bazar. I know we’ll have some new interesting pieces for our Danish booth, so come see us and if you don’t want a plate or a cup have a chat. December follows quickly with all its events and “hygge.” We are so lucky to have family coming from Denmark to help us celebrate Winnies first Christmas and even more lucky that we have this experience in our home here in Toronto. I wonder if Winnie will be able to walk around the tree with us? To all of you who has been a part of this blessed year and all of you whom we’ll see next year; Merry Merry Christmas and a happy New Year from Kenneth, Winnie and myself Mette At bryde af, og rejse bort, kan være svært, og falde hårdt, men det er livets krav til den, der holder af at komme hjem! (Piet Hein) 11 FROM THE PRESIDENT I mentioned at the Thanksgiving Dinner that just the week before it was shorts and T-shirt weather, and then one week later there were flurries coming down at the church. Seeing as this is Ontario and looking forward to the last couple of months of the year – I guess it is not surprising. Forewarned is forearmed they say. Even though we are enjoying a very colourful fall, better get ready for winter. That is what we are doing at our church. It is quite a busy time preparing for the bazaar, Lucia pageant, and various Christmas events among everything else. If you have some extra time or quality items that you don’t need, and if you haven’t already been contacted to help in one way or another, please let us know. We can usually make good use of either or both at the church. We are back in full swing after the summer break. Those who came to the Welcome Back Fest were treated to a nice buffet and entertainment courtesy of Liselotte and her “Contributions of Danes to Canada” ensemble. This was an enjoyable rerun of the Nordic Fair version, and special thanks go to all the performers. Movie afternoons are a hit with the “Matador” series, and Sunday yoga is adding smiles (and looser limbs!!) to its participants. Pastor Kenneth’s book study group is busy with their readings and discussions, and he has also started Confirmation classes. The church was given a little Fall Clean-Up Day facelift both inside and out, including an effort to restore the library to its former use as a reading/meeting room. Music Sundays continue to add a special touch to those services. We really do keep busy with a great variety of activities, and do our best to find ways to include you in them. These events are in addition to our normal weekly meetings of Church Café, Golden Age Club, and Folk Dancing. Please make the effort to take part in them – they are there for your enjoyment and benefit. In September we sent congratulations to Esther Christensen and the Waterloo congregation who celebrated their 50th anniversary. We invited them to join us here in Toronto as our special guests at anyone of our many events of their choice. We hope that many of you will join us in this celebration once the date and event has been decided upon and shared with you. Our annual Thanksgiving Dinner was another wonderful evening of great food, amazing entertainment, and enjoyable social camaraderie for the almost 100 guests. A special thank you to all the hard workers in the kitchen, the wait staff, and the bringers of music, song, speech, and dance. It was your efforts that made it the great success it was. The Halloween Family Service was a hit again for the children. All had a good time with stories, costumes, music, entertainment, and tasty food. As mentioned near the start of this message, the next couple of months will be very busy. It is a time for celebration of many events at our church with family and friends. November brings All Saints’ Day, our own congregation’s 58th birthday, and the start of the church new year. Many people have already been making various preparations for the upcoming 12 bazaar. We are all aware of the importance and popularity of this event, and hope that you will continue to support it. Tickets for the Fall Lottery have already been sent out and winners will be drawn that day. We will also have a traditional Danish “Julehygge” afternoon. Our Lucia Pageant starts December off with a lovely candlelight service followed by a reception in the Royal Hall. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services are not far away - always special for many of us. And finally we close out the year with our Nativity Play and Children’s Christmas Party. Registration forms for our 2016 membership drive are included with this newsletter. As most of you know we approved the motion to incorporate this church, and it is hoped that this process will be completed by our AGM in March. In the meantime we still function as we have before, including the need to be registered as a voting member to have your vote count at that meeting. Make sure you register early to be able to participate. Please see notes on many of the above events elsewhere in this newsletter, and check the almanac or website for specific details. As always we encourage people to participate in our activities and in particular our Sunday services. All are welcome to share in the benefits of our wonderful church. Best wishes for a joyful and safe Christmas season. We practice new hymns so we can lead the singing for the congregation. Please let me know if you would like to join us. We need more voices, and we have so much fun!!! MUSIC SUNDAYS: The next couple of months are going to be very exciting music-wise. Fall means songs of withdrawal, nature is going to sleep and we all have to go inside ourselves and nurture our spirits. How I love many of the fall hymns! Seems like the colder months bring warmer music, and as the days get shorter we comfort ourselves with Christmas songs and music. All Saints Day, November 1st: We will have solos played by violinist Paulina Derbez, and poem-performance by poet Tanya Neumeyer (Whose “Bedste” used to come to our church!) December will be full of Lucia songs, Advent songs and Christmas hymns. For our Christmas Services on December 24th we will have trumpeter Lina Allemano accompanying our festive day. Lina Allemano is an accomplished trumpeter, composer and improviser, who often tours the US, Europe and Canada with her own quartet “Lina Allemano Four”. What I didn’t know before I got in contact with her is that her mom happens to be Danish! January 3rd 2016 is our first Sunday in the new year, and violinist Sarah Wiebe has promised to come back and play for us, and this time she will bring yet another violinist Amy Spurr. Looking forward to a beautiful beginning of the new year! Danskskolen (Please see pages 3 and 5 regarding rehearsals for Lucia and Nativity Play, as well as “Future Stars on Stage”) GREETINGS FROM SUNSET VILLA We enjoyed hosting the federation meeting; it was great to see everyone again! We are currently starting a fundraising campaign to raise funds to rebuild our stage in the bowl in preparation for Constitution Day 2016. The poor old stage is showing its age and I have my concerns of people’s safety due to some rotting. We are looking for donations of time, material and such. As a board we need to straighten out some internal affairs such as our by-laws to get us into compliance. There are many issues that have been allowed to continue that have become disruptive and impede the growth and a positive forward motion of the association. It is my personal objective to get Sunset Villa back to what the founders had set their sights on; Family, Friends and laughter! I have had discussions with Anne Marie Dalgaard of Danes World Wide and she has agreed that she will try her best to visit us again for Constitution Day 2016. This would be wonderful. I wish you all the best. John Hansen, President of Sunset Villa 16 MOVIE AFTERNOONS We have started watching all the episodes of the famous Danish series “Matador”. However, as it turns out her memory is a little foggy when it comes to her date of birth, and a telegram from the King causes some embarrassment. Episode 8: 1934. A famous modern painter, Professor Ernst Nyborg, arrives in town. As it turns out, he is very much a romantic interest of Maude Varnæs! Mads Skjern also has his eye on the arts, but with different intentions. In order to secure a building permit, he "greases the political wheels" by anonymously commissioning Nyborg to paint a portrait of the town Mayor…. BJERNEDE RUNDKIRKE Bjernede Rundkirke is one of only 7 remaining “Round-Churches” in Denmark, and the only one on Sjælland. The church was built around the year 1170 by Sune Ebbesen, and excavations behind the cemetery have revealed that the old “Bjernedegård”, a wealthy man’s property, was located in that same spot. Not only that, but we also know that there was a wood-structure church in the same location even earlier: On a plague above the entrance from the Bjernede Rundkirke. Photo: Lone Levesen “våbenhus” there is an inscription in Latin, reading: “Ebbe Skjalmen and his wife Ragnhild built a church here, which his son Sune later rebuilt in stone in the honour of God, Saint Maria and Saint Laurentius”. The walls of the church are more than 1.5 meters thick and made of field stone as well as of bricks. Brick making was a newly learned skill around the time, and modern-time masons say that the workmanship is not great. It must be OK though, since the church is still standing! The church room itself is actually not ideal for services, as most people would be unable to see the pastor. However, at the time this was not a major problem since the church was not built so much for holding church services, but in honour of God. Also, the church services were very short, so people would stand for the duration. And why is the church round and has small windows? Well, there are conflicting theories: Some say this was so the church would be ideal to be used for defence in case of an enemy attack, while others say that the windows were designed for sunlight to be let in and be used for astronomical observations, to help understand the size and the shape of the earth. Nobody knows for sure! 18 IN MEMORIAM KARL JENSEN Born June 10th 1951 in Holstebro, Denmark Passed away October 9th 2015 in Toronto Will be missed by wife Diane, sons Erik and Kyle, sisters Else and Birthe, brother Niels, family and friends.
