I thank God, and I thank you for the wonderful opportunity to have served with the Union Branch TEAM for 45 years. To God Be The Glory! The key words for transition should be: Unity, Cooperation, Communication, Resourcefulness and Teamwork.” Andrew J. White, Pastor Excerpts from December 13, 2010 UBBC conference meeting. The Union Branch Spotlight Page 3 From the Pastor’s Pen Guiding Principles For Ministry – 59 Years I n these days I find myself reviewing more and more a ministry for which I was licensed in April 1952, ordained in October 1953 and became a pastor of The First Baptist Church, Heathsville, Virginia in May 1954. I became pastor of Zion Baptist in Petersburg in April 1963 and Union Branch, Prince George in October 1965. Now the time has come to begin entering retirement. It has been fifty-nine years since April 1951 and God has blessed me over and over in a mighty way. He has ordered my steps and directed my path across these eventful years. I have been blessed to have had the pleasure of pastoring and sharing with so many wonderful people. Church officers and members have been patient and kind in allowing and encouraging me to grow and to share with persons in the community and wider. If I should have any praise, let it go to Calvary. This ministry has been rather extensive and stretched across many years, however, I have become increasingly aware that it has been anchored in and guided by certain fundamental, guiding principles. In light of these principles and based on certain convictions, decisions have been made, ministries have developed, initiative taken, projects promoted, auxiliaries established, policies executed and proclamation made. The guiding principles for this ministry would include the following: 1. An unquestioned call from God to be a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the official invitation from congregations to be pastor. “Elevating and exalting Jesus Christ while lifting and encouraging people to become all that they can be in Him.” 2. Utilizing Biblical understanding and the principles of Jesus Christ in taking positions and making decisions. 3. Accessibility, availability and accountability to the membership, believing that all members are important and should be given equal attention. 4. Maintaining an open door to the study, office and home and an open heart to the needs, hurts and concerns of all people. 5. Providing a vital ministry of care and comfort through visitation of the homebound, hospitalized and those in nursing facilities. 6. Promoting regular prayer meeting, Bible study and spiritual growth through the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. 7. Respecting the autonomy of the Board of Deacons, the Board of Trustees and other auxiliaries. 8. Commitment of time to community service with the belief that the ministry of the church must reach outside the church walls through cooperation with other churches and community agencies. 9. To regularly promote and encourage financial integrity, accountability and confidence. 10. Stimulating the growth of new ministries and committees as needed. 11. To improve efficiency in administration by writing and adopting operation guidelines and policies. 12. Encouraging the writing of the history of the church to foster greater respect for the past and to project a clearer sense of the future. 13. Constantly seeking the will of God and relying on His power (continued next page) Page 4 in discharging pastoral responsibilities. 14. Imitating Christ and seeking His strength in leading an exemplary personal life and lifestyle. 15. Leading in the construction and renovation of space needed for a more extensive ministry. 16. Insisting that internal, spiritual growth takes place prior to external, physical expansion. 17. Leading by example in financial stewardship, including time and talent. 18. Elevating and exalting Jesus Christ while lifting and encouraging people to become all that they can be in Him. 19. Endeavoring to be close enough to persons and to families to be felt, while being distant enough to be effective. 20. Insisting that Evangelism and outreach be The Agenda of the Church, rather than “on the agenda of the church.” 21. Responding to conflict in a manner that respects the integrity and personhood of all, and always endeavoring to “keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” Following these guiding principles has steered us well over these 59 years. To GOD be the Glory!!! Pastor, Andrew J. White, Sr. The Union Branch Spotlight UBBC Bible Study Ministry In July 2010, the Deacon Board of UBBC reorganized the membership of the UBBC Bible Study Committee and included members from various ministries within the church. Prior to that time membership consisted of Deacons only. The committee now consist of Deacons Robbie Mitchell Jr. (Chair), Alvenzie Candies and Sterling Hunt; Mrs. Janie Wright, Deaconess/ Librarian; Mrs. Marilyn JoynerSmith, Board of Christian Education; and Mrs. Renee Williams, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent. The committee established a series of lessons for the remainder of 2010 around the theme of “Leadership.” Those lessons include the specific topics of: Unity; Leadership; Conflict; and Conflict Resolution. The first lesson on unity was presented on September 21, 2010 by Deacon Sterling Hunt. The remaining lessons are scheduled to be presented on the first and third Tuesdays of the month by various presenters. This year marked the sixth year of joint bible study with Zion Baptist Church in Petersburg. In keeping with that tradition, two sessions were held this year. The first joint session was held at Zion on September 1, 2010 and the topic was “Understanding Ezra and the fear of the Lord.” The second session was held at UBBC on October 5, 2010 and the topic was “Manasseh and the compassion and forgiveness of God.” "The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad." — Psalm 126:3 Principle Building Fund Participants July -December Ms. Lanita Thweatt, in memory of father, Mr. Roy Thweatt, Jr. Mr. John Thweatt UBBC Junior Usher’s The Union Branch Spotlight Page 5 Service of Ordination for Rev. Clarence Milton Thweatt, Jr. The service of ordination for Clarence M. Thweatt, Jr., Pastor-Elect, Wilborne Baptist Church, Waverly, VA., was held at Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George, VA on July 11, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. Reverend Andrew J. White was the presiding Pastor. The program was conducted in three parts: (1) The preparation for examination, which consisted of assembling and providing guidance to a council of Pastors and Deacons on the examination of the candidate and making a recommendation for ordination; (2) The actual examination of the candidate, which consisted of the candidate’s responses to council members’ questions pertaining to conversion, call to ministry, and doctrine; and (3) The ordination service, which included the recommendation from the council and the ordination ceremony. Page 6 The Union Branch Spotlight FIVE FINGER PRAYER 1. Your thumb is nearest you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. 2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors and ministers. They need support in pointing others in the right direction. 3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the President, leaders in Business and industry and administrators. They need God’s guidance. 4. The next finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teach will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. 5. And lastly come our little finger, the smallest finger of all which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, “The least shall be the greatest among you.” Your pinkie should remind you to pray for your self. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your needs will be put in proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively. The Union Branch Spotlight Page 11 Update on Cost-of-Living Adjustment for Veterans Update on Cost-of-Living Adjustment for Veterans Compensation and Pension Benefits in 2011COLA Tied to Social Security and Consumer Price Index WASHINGTON (Dec. 30, 2010) - The Social Security Administration has announced that no cost-of-living adjustments will be made to Social Security benefits in 2011 because the consumer price index has not risen since 2008 when the last Social Security increase occurred. Like recipients of Social Security and other federal benefits, Veterans, their families and survivors will also not see a cost-of-living adjustment in 2011 to their compensation and pension benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Under federal law, the cost-of-living adjustments to VA's compensation and pension rates are the same percentage as for Social Security benefits. VA provides compensation and pension benefits to about four million Veterans and beneficiaries. For more information about VA benefits, go to www.va.gov <http://www.va.gov/> or call 1-800-827-1000. Gems Breakfast On Saturday Dec 4, the GEMS were treated to a hot, delicious breakfast at Golden Corral. Each UBBC auxiliary/ministry sponsored the GEMS. GEMS are our precious members who are 70 years or older. Page 12 Anniversary Celebration for Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White A Blue Carpet Memory During the 45 years Reverend White has been our Pastor, we all have collected a treasure of memories of weddings, baby dedications, baptisms, inspiring sermons, poems and stories that have moved us, and of comforting words spoken during the times of bereavement. Some of us can recall an encouraging word spoken in times of trouble, a hospital visit and conversations that included a joke or two. We have Red Carpet memories associated with the “old sanctuary” and we have Blue Carpet memories that are framed around the “new sanctuary.” The 45th Anniversary Celebration of Reverend White’s dedication and service to the members of “The” Union Branch Baptist Church, was held on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. It was our goal that this celebration would demonstrate our love and The Union Branch Spotlight appreciation and therefore, be a Blue Carpet Memory for him. The theatrical performance was embellished with praise dance, songs and a skit that focused on the birth of Jesus Christ. The Union Branch Spotlight UBBC Holds Evening Worship Service for the New Year UBBC prepared for the new year with an evening Worship Service. On December 31st, at 6:00 p.m., a date originally scheduled to have Watch Night and Holy Communion only, an all inclusive, full worship service was held. The change was made due to inclement weather forcing the postponement of 4th Sunday’s 9:00 regular worship service. The evening gave members an opportunity to reflect on the old year and prayerfully bring in the new. It was the last day of the year, the last worship service of the year and Rev. White’s last official sermon as Pastor of UBBC. There were words of thanks, praise and testimony from the members. God has truly been good. As one member expressed His goodness, “Grace and Mercy” stood out in their mind. This rang true in our hearts even more so as Ms. Angie Hill, gave a emotionally moving rendition of the song “Amazing Grace”. The scripture was read from Matthew 1:18. Rev. White’s topic was “The Angel Of The Lord Is A Great Counselor”. Just as the angel was with Mary and Joseph, God has sent His angel to see us through the new year. The Angel gives direction and protection. Our pastor reminded us not to be afraid, though times may be difficult. We have a friend already in the new year. Follow the angel. Follow Jesus.
