Annual
Report
A Message from the Head of School
RT INSPIRES. It pushes us to
experience the beauty of the world
in different ways. It facilitates
conversation, tackles difficult topics,
helps us experience joy, gives
rise to creative solutions and
nourishes our spirit, mind
and body. In this issue,
we celebrate the arts. We
hope you enjoy learning about the new
spaces available to our students to pursue
and display their art. As our Chamber Singers Choir
celebrates its 25th year, we take a look backwards and
also look forward as we introduce our new Director
of the Chamber Singers, Leah Wietig. From poetry
to arts philanthropy, our alumnae are adding to and
preserving the rich culture that is the arts in our lives.
Art is also a form of prayer. When we officially
opened the bridge between our new Athletic Center
and our main academic building, as a faculty, staff
and administration we stood together spanning the
new bridge. Sr. Ann Therese Kelly, CSSF led us
through her visual depiction of St. Francis’ Canticle
of the Sun, the theme for the beautiful stained glass
window which is the anchor piece in our new student
gallery space, adjacent to the bridge. This modern
interpretation of St. Francis’ prayer shines as a vibrant
reminder of our Franciscan heritage. As a community
we prayed we would be a living bridge between
St. Francis’ time and our own era. We asked to be
channels of God’s peace, stewards of the environment
and sources for common good in our modern world.
We asked for God’s blessing as we sought to help our
freshwomen bridge the academic and social challenges
of transitioning from elementary school
to high school and our seniors from high
school to college.
At Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart
we strive to live the ideals of our Franciscan
Charism in a joy-filled way. If you visit the
school, this charism is palpable in the way
our faculty work with our students and the
way our young women treat one another.
On November 5, we gathered in community
to honor alumnae and others in our Sacred
Heart Community who exemplified what it means to be
Franciscan. Our annual Christus Super Omnia Scholarship and
Awards Dinner was an evening of reminiscence, community
and celebration that raised funds for exceptional young
women to attend the Academy, regardless of their
parents’ financial situation.
Because of the generosity of alumnae, parents
and other benefactors, we continue to be in a
position to offer quality, enriching and faith-filled
opportunities to our young women. The outcome of
this generosity is our most recent graduating class—
the Class of 2015—105 beautiful young women ready
to go forth and make a difference in our world. For
this reason, I am glad to showcase their joyous faces
at Commencement by means of introduction to this
year’s Annual Report. We are most grateful for the
gift of those who supported the Academy during the
2014-2015 fiscal year. We offer this photograph that
captures the spirit and potential of the Class of 2015
in gratitude for all those who have given generously
to the Academy and to inspire others to make a
difference in the lives of our young women.

ONTHECOVER
The bridge connecting the Athletic Center to the new art gallery within our existing building was used by students for the first
time at the opening of the 2015-16 academic year. The structure features a stained glass window designed and made by Sister
Ann Therese Kelly, CSSF. The glass beautifully represents St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun.

Niagara Partnership, and I know how
important women are to the workforce.
Our region is on the upswing and women
are and will continue to be a major part of
that movement. I believe all women lead in
some manner. Often quietly and without
fanfare. SHA helps these young women
understand that while the podium can be
theirs, they don’t need to be standing there
to lead. The Sisters of St. Francis embody
this quiet leadership.
Pat, there have been many changes
since you were a student. Tell me some of
your favorites.
And
with Board President Patricia Marino Smyton ’61(left)
and Director of Advancement Sara Schumacher
Pat Marino Smyton ‘61 is thrilled to grow her service to Buffalo
Academy of the Sacred Heart by taking the position of board
president. In this role, she is looking forward to working closely
with Sara Schumacher, Director of Advancement.
SARA SCHUMACHER: Pat, you asked
to meet in the Auditorium. Tell me why?
PAT SMYTON: Being in the auditorium
was to be in the heart of the school. We
were ALL there, the whole school, for
Masses, Operettas, recitals, Christmas
Pageants, skits, and Student Government
Association meetings.
Sara: So, what is it about SHA that keeps
you so involved?
Pat: Well, first and foremost, it’s the
respect that I have for the Sisters of St.
Francis, who founded the school. Their
commitment to the academy and the young
women who come here is unwavering.
They have continually fostered an
atmosphere of Franciscan spirit that just
spreads to the entire SHA community.
Secondly, I have always been a very proud
SHA student and alumna. When I hear
of the remarkable work our graduates are
accomplishing on local and global levels,
I am inspired and invigorated.
So, what brought you to SHA?
Sara: So many things - my family history,
of course. While I’m not an alumna,
I have six aunts and four cousins who
are, and SHA has always been a big part
of the Schumacher fabric. Second, my
six-month-old daughter, who will be the
class of 2033! I think private, Catholic
education is in a unique place to really
help young women succeed. Lastly, my
experience. I have been in fundraising
for 15 years, the last ten with the Buffalo
Pat: I’m so impressed by the variety of
courses offered today. Science and math
are now more integral, with STEM a
strong focus. Our alumnae are leaders
in these areas, too! Technology has had a
huge effect – the students all use iPads to
learn, it’s amazing. I sat in on a class last
year and what a difference. There is also so
much more available to enrich the student
experience in athletics and extracurricular
activties.
Sara: With all of this progress, what
constants do you feel are the most
valuable?
Pat: The building itself – it’s a living,
breathing part of the SHA community, and
it’s in tremendous shape! It’s been altered
to accommodate the students without
its character being affected. Also, family
traditions, as you know well. I think the
core values have stayed very close; in my
day they wanted us to develop spiritually,
intellectually and socially. Today we talk
about Spirit, Mind and Body.
Sara: What advice do you give today’s
Freshwomen?
Pat: Ask God each day to give you what
you need to do your best. Then do it.
Embrace SHA; don’t just become a part of
SHA, become SHA! Absolutely, positively
ENJOY your four years here. Build the
friendships that last a lifetime. Smile. It
can make your day great, and someone
else’s day even greater.
Jessica Pham ‘16 took time from her academic schedule to apply the skills she learned last year in Digital Photography class to capture this
conversation between Board Chair Patricia Marino Smyton ’61 and Director of Advancement Sara Schumacher. Jessica is continuing
to develop her high tech art skills by taking 3-D Printing and Digital Animation, a course that is being offered for the first time this year.
Jessica is especially enjoying AP Chemistry and Greek in her senior year. She is an active member of our stage crew.

Student Gallery: Open for Inspiration
Katherine Lyons Witt ’89 is thrilled that today’s SHA students will have an on-campus Art Gallery for inspiration. Here, Khin
Khin Htike ’18 and Erin Hardick ’19 hone their appreciation for various media by observing the pieces on display.
Our Art Gallery space connects the original Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart building at 3860 Main Street to the bridge
that leads to the new Athletic Center. Student exhibitions will be rotated each academic semester with cohesive themes
developed by our Art Department chairperson, Gina Cutrona, and faculty member, Lisa Bonn.
VISUAL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS
Art Comes to Life at the Albright-Knox
isual art is an active and vibrant experience for
many Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart students.
This is clearly illustrated in the consistent success our
student artists have experienced at the Albright Knox Art
Gallery’s annual Art Alive contest.
Art Alive participants create living representations
of works of art from the Albright Knox Collection and
beyond. Contestants are judged in a variety of categories
and SHA’s student-driven entries have brought home
prestigious honors in each of the past three competitions.
Get Up and Dance by Keith Haring was the 2013 entry in
the Art Alive competition. This large scale project served
as the final exam for the Studio Art Class, taught by Lisa
Bonn. The piece received the “Handyman Award for
Craftsmanship.”

Ms. Bonn once again stewarded our student work for
the 2014 piece, recreating Underlife by Jason Middlebrook.
This stunning and imposing installation received “Best
Tableau from the Gallery’s Permanent Collection,” the
event’s top award.
2015 again brought the “Best Tableau from the Gallery’s
Permanent Collection” top honors to SHA for their
representation of Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash by Giacomo Balla.
When asked why her student projects are so highly
recognized in the Art Alive competition, Ms. Bonn
comments, “Our students themselves are so full of life,
it is completely natural for them to creatively extend that
liveliness into these previously inert forms- it is an organic,
fun and very rewarding experience for our emerging
artists.”
Inspired at SHA: Reflections on
a Career in Art and Culture
For Katherine Lyons Witt ’89, artwork
is more than something to look at.
Art provides an opportunity to view
the world in new ways, discovering
stories, emotions and messages behind
expressions of creativity.
As a student at Buffalo Academy of
the Sacred Heart, Kate enjoyed art class
with Sister Lois Badding, OSF ’53. More
significantly, however, she developed
a passion for Spanish Language. Judy
Hassett, Spanish teacher and Foreign
Language Chairperson, inspired her
to dream about traveling and exploring
foreign cultures.
Kate began her international
exploration between her sophomore and
junior years as an exchange student to
Ecuador. In college, she spent a year in
Spain, during which she experienced her
first Art History class. It was in this setting
that her interest in art was sparked.
Following completion of her masters
degree in Arts Administration and a
fellowship at the Peggy Guggenheim
Collection in Venice, Kate was offered
a full-time development position at the
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in
New York. She grew to love building
relationships with donors, and brought
these new skills to the Museum of
Modern Art (MoMA). She joined MoMA
to direct corporate fundraising during
an unprecedented time of expansion for
the institution. In 2008, she began a
position at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art, overseeing major gifts and curatorial
affiliate groups. While working at some
of the world’s most high profile sites, she
has been well served by lessons learned at
SHA. She reflects, “…attending an allgirls school like SHA and being around
independent and strong women leaders
provided me with a sort of confidence I
would not have developed otherwise.”
In 2013, Kate called on that selfconfidence as she launched her own
consulting firm, Katherine L. Witt
& Associates. Working with cultural
institutions of all sizes and scopes
provides an invigorating – and sometimes
terrifying - departure from her years at
large galleries. Throughout her evolving
career, Kate has found that following her
passion leads to continued inspiration.
She encourages today’s students to seek
inspiration by taking advantage of the
cultural resources available to them in
Katherine Lyons Witt spent five years in a
leadership role at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art (pictured here), prior to starting her own
company.
Western New York – the Albright-Knox,
Burchfield Penney, CEPA, Anderson
Gallery and Hallwalls to name a few of
her favorites.
Kate’s love of Spanish language
classes at SHA ignited the trajectory for
her remarkable career. She sees our new
student Art Gallery as a vehicle for the
same type of motivation. She muses,
“Having a special place to showcase
student artwork is a vital resource and will
allow for new conversations about art,
culture and ideas.”

Chamber Singers: Reflecting on 25 Years of Tradition
An Exercise in Precision
The state-of-the-art dance studio, on the second floor of our Athletic
Center, features specialized flooring, a mirrored wall and a sound system.
PERFORMING ARTS HIGHLIGHTS
Chamber Singers:
he Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart Chamber
Singers Choir is a renowned element of our
Music Department. Their performances have won
accolades and awards locally and nationally. This
is the 25th year in which the opportunity to learn
and perform sacred and chamber music has been available
to our students. The tradition of excellence that began
a quarter century ago is being further augmented with
the addition of Leah Wietig as director of the Chamber
Singers.
In 1990, eight young women were a part of the
first ever Chamber Singers group at SHA. Since then,
hundreds of young women have had the opportunity to
travel, perform, compete and grow through this program.
In 1994 the group was invited to perform at the White
House. Nicole Aquino Gothgen, MD ‘96, a member of
the group that traveled to Washington D.C., recounts,
“The whole experience of singing at the White House
stands out as one of my most treasured trips. There is
something very surreal about being on the other side of
the velvet ropes as tour groups walk by you. We were part
of the tour! It was especially humbling to find out that we
were the only group allowed to do two performances on
the visit.”

Reflecting on 25 Years of Tradition
Nicole further notes that being part of the Chamber
Singers provided a chance to truly appreciate and
understand forms of music she had never experienced
before. This is something that Leah Wietig is looking
forward to continuing, as she brings experience gained
through her career as a soprano.
Leah’s experience on stage is vast and includes
prominent roles in operas, musicals and as a soloist. Most
notably, Leah was the featured soprano in Carmina Burana
for the Chautauqua Institution’s 2015 summer season.
Through her work with the Buffalo Philharmonic, she has
taught student groups as large as 2,000. Working with an
auditioned chorus of 17 SHA students on a consistent basis
over a school cycle is a very exciting alternative.
Chamber Choir Music may be Leah’s very favorite
genre. Creating harmony and communicating through
music on a smaller scale is a special experience that cannot
be felt as profoundly with a symphonic choir. The size of
our Chamber Choir provides the chance to get to know
each voice individually. Leah views communication as the
most important deliverable for the group. Communicating
through art is a great opportunity and responsibility, and
one she is thrilled to share with our very talented students. calendar

Dancing Around the Globe
After graduating from SHA in 1990, Rebecca Jefferson’s career in dance
took her first to New York City, and ultimately to Germany. She has
recently performed in productions in Berlin and Cologne. When asked
about the role dance has played in her life, Rebecca remarks, “I am not a
big talker, so dance is my language. It really feels like my home, where I
am most close to myself. It’s my anchor.”
Rebecca’s career was featured in the Daily Public earlier this year, along
with a video of her performance on a Berlin stage (above).

hand. Her dedication to students extends beyond
the classroom and she makes time to attend swim
meets, sporting events, musicals, dramas and
music concerts. Eileen is dedicated to her Catholic
Faith. She is a true example of Franciscan values.
Always supportive, caring and sincerely interested
in others, Eileen never looks for reward or
recognition.
Living the Spirit
Living the Spirit honorees have been chosen because of the use of
their God given talents in outstanding service to others, following the
tradition of St. Francis and St. Clare.
Meals on Wheels for Western New York provides
food and friendship to the vulnerable in our
society, the elderly and the disabled, regardless
of their ability to pay. Many of their clients lack the
financial resources to purchase nutritious food.
Each of their approximately 3,600 clients are asked
simply to make a voluntary contribution. No
qualifying individual is ever turned away if they are
unable to contribute.

Janet McNally earned her BA
from Canisius College, followed
by her MFA in Fiction from
the University of Notre Dame.
She currently teaches Creative
Writing at Canisius College.

Girls, is the twentieth recipient of
the White Pines Press Poetry Prize. Janet also has a young
adult novel due out in Fall 2016, published by Harper
Collins, with another to follow in 2017.
Janet believes that storytelling is what makes us human,
and credits encouragement from Sister Connie Marlowe,
OSF and Eileen Maloney with helping her to believe that it
was possible to be a writer.
Janet’s advice to our students who have a passion for
writing: “Read everything.” She believes strongly that the
secret to good writing is good reading.

ALUMNA EXPERT
Marissa Modica
DeMonstoy,
Esq. ’00
TOPIC
A Guide to
Estate
Planning
Marissa Modica DeMonstoy, Esq. ’00
Marissa Modica DeMonstoy, Esq. ’00 is an attorney at the Stamm Law Firm
in Williamsville, New York. She focuses her practice on estate planning,
estate probate/administration, asset protection and Medicaid planning.
Marissa has received the prestigious Albert R. Mugel award recognizing
proficiency in future interests and estate planning law. She and her husband
have two young children.
It’s never too early to start your estate planning.
The sooner you start planning, the more
prepared you will be for life’s twists and turns
and the easier things will be for your loved ones
should you become incapacitated or pass away.
Here’s a general guide to estate planning:
Upon Turning 18
Most children look forward to turning eighteen
to obtain independence. Often forgotten is
that all adults should have a Health Care Proxy
(“HCP”) and HIPAA Release in place. An Agent
named in a HCP is empowered to make medical
decisions for an incapacitated person and a
HIPAA Release allows the Agent to have access
to medical information. Too often parents send
their children off to college without a HCP and
HIPAA Release in place and find that when their
children fall ill at school, they can’t easily get
answers about their child’s health.
In Your 20’s and 30’s
This is the time to do some estate planning
basics. You should have a Will (asset transfer
after death), Health Care Proxy and Power
of Attorney (financial matters while living)
no matter how much you have accumulated
in assets. An Estate Plan is not just about
transferring assets, but about whom you would
like in charge of making decisions when you are
unable to do so yourself. For parents with minor
children, a Will is especially important because
in the Will the parent can name whom they
would like to be appointed as Guardian of their
minor children should they pass away.
In Your 40’s and 50’s
Fine tuning your estate plan is the goal in this
age group. If you have accumulated wealth you
should begin thinking about more complex
plans that may involve Living Trusts and longterm care insurance. This is also the time when
estate plans are revised to make responsible
adult children Executors, Trustees and other
fiduciaries.
In Your 60’s and 70’s
Hopefully you have an estate plan in place and
can focus on updating and refining your plan.
You should also put together a list of trusted
advisors such as your attorney, financial planner
and tax professionals and review this with your
family in case your family needs guidance in
handling your affairs.
70’s, 80’s and Beyond
Your estate plan should be seamless and your
trusted loved ones should know what to do
should something happen to you. If you would
like to make sure your affairs are in order so
that your hard earned money may still be left
to loved ones or charity even after entering
a nursing home, meet with an experienced
attorney to refine your plan.
At Every Age
Review your estate plan every 5-7 years,
whenever the law changes significantly, or
whenever your personal circumstances have
changed in any meaningful way (substantial
change in assets, death or disability of a
fiduciary, divorce, etc.).
Be certain your financial accounts have
beneficiaries and contingent beneficiaries listed
and keep them current.
Have a trusted team in place consisting of an
attorney, financial planner and tax professional.
Estate planning shouldn’t be pushed off into
your elderly years. The earlier you begin, the
better equipped you will be to handle whatever
life throws at you. For more information about
estate planning or to learn how to include
Sacred Heart in your estate plan, email Marissa
at [email protected].

Alumnae gifts are the
cornerstone of our Loyalty Fund;
their partnership is vital in our
ability to continue offering the
same unique opportunities to
current and future students
that have been a hallmark of
a Sacred Heart education. It is
heartwarming and inspiring to
give tribute to those who once
walked our halls, knowing
they believe so much in our
Franciscan mission as to assure
Sacred Heart is always here for
tomorrow’s young women. Their
enduring loyalty is a wonderful
legacy that we are blessed to
receive.

Scholarships
Sacred Heart Academy’s
endowed and designated
scholarships are often
established in memory of a
loved one, or to commemorate
distinguished academic and/
or service contributions by our
students. They are a tremendous
resource to provide a means for
deserving young women to attend
our school, especially those
who may not otherwise have the
opportunity. We pay tribute to and
extend our heartfelt appreciation
for the kindness of our generous
benefactors.

Sharing a Special Legacy
Bridget Dick Blesnuk ’80 had a very special love for religious and choral performance. Bridget lost a battle with cancer in 2014
and her mother, Mickey Dick, wanted to commemorate her life and art in a special way. This inspired Mickey to donate Bridget’s
beloved piano to Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart. Placed in the Chapel, the instrument will continue to enrich the spiritual
lives of our community. Above, junior Hannah Mikulec hones her skills as a musician on Bridget’s piano.
